Chocolate Yule Log

December 24, 2025

The chocolate Yule Log, also known as a Bûche de Noël, is one of the most iconic desserts of the holiday season. Inspired by the old European tradition of burning a decorated log to bring good luck, this cake captures the same warmth and magic in a delicious, festive form. With its rich chocolate flavor and elegant appearance, it is a centerpiece dessert that instantly makes any Christmas table feel special.

At its heart, the chocolate Yule Log is a light chocolate sponge cake, baked thin and rolled while still warm. This technique keeps the cake soft and flexible, preventing cracks and creating that signature spiral when sliced. The sponge is typically filled with a smooth chocolate buttercream or whipped ganache, adding depth and creaminess without overpowering the cake itself. Once rolled, the cake is covered in another layer of chocolate frosting and textured with a fork to resemble tree bark.

What makes this dessert so loved is its balance. Despite its indulgent look, the cake feels light and airy, making it perfect after a rich holiday meal. The cocoa flavor is deep and comforting, while the creamy filling melts beautifully with every bite. Many variations add a hint of espresso, orange zest, or vanilla to enhance the chocolate and give it a more complex flavor profile.

Decoration is where the Yule Log truly shines. A dusting of powdered sugar mimics freshly fallen snow, while meringue mushrooms, sugared cranberries, or rosemary sprigs turn the cake into a miniature winter forest. Even simple decorations can make it look stunning, proving that this dessert is as much about creativity as it is about taste.

The chocolate Yule Log is also a wonderful make-ahead dessert. It can be prepared a day in advance and stored in the fridge, allowing the flavors to set and making holiday hosting less stressful. Whether you keep it classic or add your own twist, this festive cake brings tradition, elegance, and pure chocolate comfort to the Christmas season.

The chocolate part was great, but my cake stuck to the pan. Need to grease it more next time.

Not that hard if you follow recipe. Can’t understand why others struggled.

Yummy, but took me ages to roll it up properly! Next time I’ll watch a video.

I’m so glad to hear that! I made it last year and it was a showstopper!

  9. 3 stars
Why so much sugar? Shouldn’t it be healthier. Maybe reduce that?

Chocolate Yule Log? More like chocolate yule no-log, HAHA. You gotta be kidding me.

  11. User avatar florentino.bergnaum1950 says:

    3 stars
I had a hard time rolling it up without breaking. Maybe I overbaked it? Still tasted great though!

  12. 5 stars
Best ever! Where did this recipe come from? My grandma made similar and now I can too! ❤️

  13. 4 stars
Yum! I love making these every Christmas. So much fun to decorate! Mine has sprinkles this time.

  14. User avatar clarissa.hauck16 says:

Meh. It’s tasty, but calling it “Yule Log” is a stretch—more like a chocolate Swiss roll. Also 150g chocolate felt like a lot for topping.

  15. User avatar miquel.hayes25 says:

I tried this recipe but my cake fell apart! Not sure what I did wrong. 🙁

  16. 1 star
Is cocoa powder really necessary? I used chocolate syrup instead and it was a disaster. Don’t recommend!

    1. 4 stars
Cocoa powder is key for the flavor! Chocolate syrup can’t replace it. Sorry you had a bad experience.

  17. 1 star
Yule logs are so overrated. Who needs chocolate when you can have vanilla?

  18. User avatar loraine.kemmer49 says:

    2 stars
Why do people keep talking about logs? I just want a straight cake, why do I have to roll it? Seems too complicated.

    1. User avatar suspiciousCommentator says:

      4 stars
I totally get what you mean! Rolling a cake seems like a lot of extra work. Can’t we just bake it flat? 😅

  19. User avatar NAFO.SUPREMACY says:

    2 stars
The instructions were a bit confusing. Should I beat the eggs first or after mixing with sugar? I just mixed it all, hope it was right!

    1. User avatar prudence.kuhlman76 says:

      4 stars
I think you should beat the eggs first with the sugar. Mixing them all together may change the texture. But I’m sure it’ll still taste good!

    2. User avatar jaclyn.cummings says:

      3 stars
Does it really matter? I mean, it’s just mixing, right? I’m sure it’ll be fine. Just enjoy it!

  20. User avatar MAGA2024.Trumpster says:

    2 stars
I’m skeptical about rolling without cracking. Any tips to keep it smooth? Also, does letting it cool slightly mean like 5 minutes or 20?

    1. User avatar Hung Nienow says:

      5 stars
Rolling without cracking is mostly about timing + a gentle hand. After it comes out, don’t wait 20 minutes—aim closer to ~5–8. You want it warm and flexible, not fully cool.

  21. 5 stars
OMG, this is so good! I can’t stop eating it. Perfect for the holidays, thanks for sharing!

  22. User avatar Peregrin Took says:

    5 stars
This Yule log is absolutely delicious! The chocolate is rich and the cream makes it so fluffy. Definitely a keeper in my recipe book!

    1. User avatar ginny.bayer45 says:

I totally agree! I made this for Christmas, and everyone loved it! So good and not too hard to make!

    2. User avatar jewell.lueilwitz1967 says:

      3 stars
Looks great, but I’m not sure about the cream part. Can I use ice cream instead? Would that work?

  23. 5 stars
Delicious! A lot of steps but totally worth it. Reminds me of my childhood when my mom made these.

  24. 3 stars
Not sure if I did something wrong but my cake turned out flat. Still tasted okay, but it wasn’t a log… more of a pancake. LOL

  25. User avatar Charles Darwin says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but I think 1/2 cup flour is too much compared to cocoa. It ended up more like a cake than a delicate roulade. Maybe I’ll tweak ratios next time.

  26. User avatar benedict.kulas says:

    4 stars
Honestly, the ingredient list feels a little short for a ‘Yule log’ like the ones in bakeries. But it’s more of a simplified roulade, and that’s fine. I’d add a pinch of espresso powder next time.

    1. User avatar lucio.deckow23 says:

      5 stars
Yeah I get what you mean about the bakery-style yule logs—this one’s definitely more like a simpler roulade. Still, the crumb to cream ratio looks workable, and espresso powder is a great upgrade. I’ve started adding a tiny bit to chocolate desserts and it really deepens the flavor without tasting “coffee.”

  27. User avatar Mystic Gohan says:

    4 stars
The instructions are clear, but 10-15 minutes feels short for my oven. I had to add like 5 more minutes so it wouldn’t be too soft.

  28. User avatar Prostetnic Vogon Kwaltz says:

    3 stars
I had trouble rolling it up without it breaking. Maybe I rolled it too tight? The taste was still good though.

  29. User avatar santo.white1997 says:

    3 stars
Eww chocolate. Not for me. But my kids like it. So I guess it’s ok.

    1. 2 stars
Eww… why even bother? If you don’t like chocolate, just make something else. No need to say it’s ok.

    2. User avatar kenneth.smitham82 says:

      4 stars
Chocolate’s not for everyone, but your kids have good taste! Maybe you can try a different flavor next time?

  30. User avatar buck.wintheiser1966 says:

    3 stars
The instructions say “let it cool slightly” and I ignored that because I was hungry 😅. Still tasty, but it didn’t roll as neatly. Guess I learned my lesson.

  31. 5 stars
This recipe is fantastic! I made this for Christmas and it turned out perfectly! Everyone loved it! 5 stars!

    1. 2 stars
I don’t know, it looks too complicated for me. Can it really be that good? 🤔

    2. User avatar akilah.littel19 says:

      5 stars
Wow, that’s great to hear! I’m planning to try this for New Year’s! Any tips?

  32. User avatar daniel.bogan65 says:

Very questionable! I think the cooking time was way off. Mine burnt after 12 mins. Total failure!

  33. User avatar enedina.marks says:

Love the idea of a Yule log! Perfect for holiday parties.

  34. User avatar tracey.mosciski2022 says:

Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about rolling a cake after only 10 minutes, but it worked. I cooled it for like 5 minutes and rolled with parchment—way easier.

    1. 5 stars
Good call cooling briefly—rolling too soon is a mess. Your parchment tip sounds spot on. I’ll try the 5-min cool next time!

  35. 5 stars
Yule log? More like chocolate log 😂 Still good. I didn’t even garnish, just ate it straight after it set.

    1. User avatar ai.pagac75 says:

      5 stars
Chocolate log is the correct vibe 😂 And honestly, skipping garnish is totally fine—looks like it tasted great straight after setting!

    2. User avatar lucien.bahringer53 says:

      3 stars
I’m skeptical—mine always cracks when I roll it. Did you let it cool fully or just “slightly”? Also 10-15 mins at 180°C sounds tight; I usually need a bit longer.

  36. 2 stars
Not sure why mine came out dry. I followed everything, but my Swiss roll pan must be smaller? The sponge was more like cake than a flexible layer.

  37. User avatar ben.lindgren50 says:

    5 stars
This looks delicious! Can’t wait to try it for my family gathering.

  38. 5 stars
OMG! So easy and the taste is out of this world!!!

    1. 5 stars
I totally agree! I made this last week and everyone loved it. Such a fun dessert to impress friends!

  39. 5 stars
This turned out way better than I expected—rich, not too sweet, and the roll actually held. I used 10 minutes and it was perfect.

  40. User avatar sherrill.gerlach says:

    4 stars
Could this be made gluten free? I really want to try it but can’t eat gluten…
