Cheesy Green Bean Casserole

November 13, 2025

Cheesy green bean casserole is the ultimate comfort dish that takes a holiday classic to the next level. It’s creamy, savory, and packed with layers of flavor, all tied together with plenty of melted cheese. Whether it’s Thanksgiving Day, a family potluck, or a cozy Sunday meal, this version of the beloved casserole always steals the spotlight.

The base of the dish starts with crisp-tender green beans, blanched just long enough to keep their color and slight bite. Instead of relying on canned soup, a homemade creamy sauce made from butter, flour, milk, and a touch of garlic brings a richer, fresher taste. Once the sauce thickens, shredded cheddar or Gruyère cheese is stirred in until smooth and velvety. The cheese melts into the sauce, coating each green bean in irresistible creaminess.

To assemble, the green beans are tossed in the cheesy sauce and layered in a baking dish. On top goes the finishing touch: a crunchy topping made from crispy fried onions, breadcrumbs, or even crushed crackers mixed with a bit of butter and more cheese. After a quick bake in the oven, the casserole bubbles beautifully, and the topping turns golden brown and crisp.

Each bite delivers a perfect mix of textures, tender green beans, creamy sauce, and a cheesy, crunchy top that makes you want to go back for seconds. You can even customize it by adding bits of cooked bacon, caramelized onions, or sautéed mushrooms for extra depth of flavor.

This casserole isn’t just for the holidays. It pairs wonderfully with roasted chicken, grilled steak, or even a simple baked potato. It’s an easy side dish that feels special without requiring much effort.

Cheesy green bean casserole brings warmth, nostalgia, and a hint of indulgence to any meal. It’s the kind of recipe that makes people linger around the table just a little longer, fork in hand, enjoying every creamy, cheesy bite.

I don’t know, my green beans came out way too mushy. Maybe I cooked them too long? Not sure if I’ll make this again.

  2. User avatar ethyl.cormier1999 says:

    3 stars
Nice but needs more flavor. I sprinkle more spices than it says. Maybe some bacon next time? Love the crunch of the onions.

  3. User avatar Humma Kavula says:

    5 stars
Cheddar cheese with green beans?? Sounds weird but wow it’s sooo good! 10/10 would recommend!

  4. 1 star
Eh, didn’t like it that much. The fried onions tasted stale. I think I might just stick to my simple steamed beans.

    1. User avatar grace.stroman says:

      4 stars
I totally get what you’re saying! Those fried onions can be hit or miss. But maybe try making your own next time? They taste way better!

    2. User avatar berry.zieme72 says:

      3 stars
Simple steamed beans sound good too, but you’re really missing out on that cheesy goodness! It’s all about personal taste, I guess.

  5. 5 stars
This recipe is awesome! The cheesy goodness is a hit at every family gathering. Will make again!

  6. User avatar codi.herzog says:

    2 stars
Mushrooms?! Eww, who puts mushrooms in a casserole? Makes it taste weird.

  7. User avatar talia.fahey6 says:

    4 stars
Good recipe, but mine never got “smooth” like the instructions said—maybe because I shredded the cheese a little thick? After baking it was still delicious though.

  8. User avatar Barry Manilow says:

    4 stars
Pretty good comfort food. I liked how quick it was, but my sauce was a little thick—next time I’ll use slightly more cream.

  9. User avatar roxanna.auer54 says:

    3 stars
I tried this recipe and it was okay. Not bad, but I’ve had better. Maybe I’ll tweak it next time.

  10. 5 stars
Yummy! I added some crispy bacon on top. Made it even better. Will definitely make again!

  11. User avatar audrey.mraz79 says:

This casserole is a hit at our family gatherings! So cheesy and delicious!

  12. User avatar MAGA2024.Trumpster says:

    5 stars
YUM! This is now my favorite side dish! ❤️

  13. User avatar benita.kuvalis says:

    5 stars
This turned out super creamy and the cheddar flavor really shines. I love that it’s not overly complicated—just good comfort food. 10/10 for a weeknight side.

  14. User avatar waylon.jakubowski43 says:

Cheese and beans??? Never had that, sounds weird!

    1. User avatar Darby Kub Sr. says:

      5 stars
I thought the same thing at first! But trust me, it’s super yummy! The cheese makes everything better. Give it a try! 😋

  15. 4 stars
The sauce is legit. I didn’t even need to add anything else. I might cut the cheese slightly next time just to make it a touch lighter.

  16. User avatar stephany.wuckert83 says:

    5 stars
French fried onions on top = elite. I might use the whole can next time because I want the crunch in every bite.

    1. 3 stars
Hmm I love crunch too but whole can might get a lil too salty/burny? Maybe do more than half, like not all, unless you watch it close. Still sounds good tho.

    2. User avatar Carmelita Baumbach says:

      5 stars
Yes!! The French fried onions on top are the whole point—so crispy and the cheese sauce underneath is perfect. I agree with using extra next time. 🙌

  17. User avatar Spriggan Matron says:

    3 stars
I don’t know, it seems a bit too rich with all that cheese. I prefer more of a classic recipe without the cream.

    1. User avatar lura.bode28 says:

      4 stars
I can see your point! It does sound kinda heavy. Maybe try using less cheese and cream? Just a thought! 😊

  18. User avatar Myrtice Gaylord says:

    3 stars
Lol I don’t even like mushrooms… but I might still try it. If it tastes like the casserole at my aunt’s house, then I’m in.

  19. User avatar gwyn.murazik says:

    3 stars
The flavor is great, but I think 1/2 tsp salt might be a bit much if your cheese is salty. Next time I’ll start smaller.

  20. 3 stars
Pretty tasty, but my sauce was a little thick after baking. Next time I’ll probably add a splash more cream. Also, 5 minutes for the green beans felt slightly short—mine were still a touch firm.

  21. User avatar earl.larkin says:

    3 stars
I’m skeptical about 5 minutes boiling—my beans stay a bit crunchy unless I cook longer. Might need to adjust depending on the thickness.

    1. User avatar Barry Manilow says:

      5 stars
Yeah, I get that—5 minutes can be too short depending on how fresh/thick the beans are. If they’re still crunchy for you, just boil 8–10 minutes (or until crisp-tender) before draining. Carryover in the oven helps, but starting point matters.

  22. User avatar young.rosenbaum says:

    5 stars
This is the best green bean casserole I’ve ever made! So cheesy and delicious. My family loved it!

    1. 5 stars
I agree, this casserole is amazing! It’s a family favorite for sure. I love how easy it is to make too!

  23. 3 stars
This looks like a easy dish but I’m skeptical about the mushrooms. Can you taste them?

    1. User avatar leland.beier2003 says:

      2 stars
No way! Mushrooms ruin everything! I don’t know how anyone can like them.

    2. User avatar Sau Wilkinson MD says:

      4 stars
I was worried too, but the mushrooms just add a nice flavor! You hardly notice them once it’s all mixed in.

  24. 5 stars
This turned out super creamy and the garlic + mushrooms flavor is on point. The fried onions on top stayed crunchy too—perfect comfort food.

  25. 4 stars
Green beans r good for u! U should eat healthy. 👏

  26. 5 stars
Okay but why heavy cream AND cheddar? That’s like overkill in the best way 😅. Also my garlic always burns if I’m not careful.

    1. User avatar filiberto.hagenes says:

      5 stars
Right?? The heavy cream makes it silky, and the cheddar brings that salty, melty punch—perfect combo for casserole comfort 😅.
For the garlic burning: keep the heat at medium (not high) and mince it small, then sauté just until fragrant—like 30–60 seconds. If yours burns fast, add the garlic after the mushrooms have softened, and stir constantly.

  27. 5 stars
So easy! The steps are straightforward and it smells amazing while baking. My picky eater actually cleaned the dish.

  28. User avatar antony.ernser1984 says:

    5 stars
Made it for Thanksgiving and everyone went back for seconds. I used fresh mushrooms (maybe a bit more than called for) and it still worked great. The French fried onions on top were the best part.

  29. 2 stars
Meh. It’s good, but I’ve had better green bean casseroles. The oven time feels short—mine needed more to brown.

  30. 4 stars
Pretty tasty, but mine came out a little thick—maybe I should’ve used less cheese or stirred more while melting. Still a win though.

    1. 5 stars
Glad you liked it! Mine gets thick too if the cheese isn’t fully smooth—stirring a bit more while the cheese melts usually loosens it up. Next time you could also add a splash more cream or even reduce the bake time just slightly.

    2. User avatar clarence.kshlerin says:

      4 stars
Maybe your oven runs hot? Mine turned out kinda gloopy once and I think I overbaked it. Also I used “light” cheese once and it behaved weird. Still, 20 + 5 seems short enough—thick would mostly be the cheese/cream ratio like you said.

  31. User avatar Gandalf the Grey says:

    1 star
Five stars? I dunno. Too cheesy for my taste. Also I burnt the onions, so yeah… lol.

  32. User avatar ethyl.windler52 says:

    2 stars
Not sure about the 5 minutes boiling—felt like it wasn’t enough. Also, the mushrooms made it a bit watery for me, so I’d sauté longer or dry them more. But the flavor is still better than boxed casserole stuff.

  33. 2 stars
Too much cheese for my taste. I prefer it more simple. Plus, the french fried onions were kinda oily.

    1. User avatar oPandariaNo says:

      4 stars
I think the cheese really adds to it! Maybe just cut back on the amount if you want it simpler?

  34. 5 stars
This is the definition of comfort food. The cheddar + cream sauce is super rich, and the mushrooms add a nice earthy vibe. I’ll definitely make it again for the holidays.

  35. User avatar oliva.becker says:

    5 stars
Honestly, I thought this would be bland. But wow, the cheese really makes it pop!

  36. 3 stars
Why do you use green beans in casseroles? I feel like frozen peas are way better. Just saying.

  37. User avatar jovita.gerhold says:

    4 stars
Not bad, but I’m not sure about boiling beans only 5 minutes. They were still a bit crisp for me. Flavor is great though.

  38. User avatar german.treutel51 says:

    1 star
Ain’t nobody got time for all that! I just microwave my beans and call it done. 🤷‍♂️

  39. User avatar titus.vandervort57 says:

    5 stars
“French fried onions” are the best part. Honestly I’d probably add more than 6 ounces… because I like crunch.

  40. 5 stars
Made it exactly as written and it came out great—bubbly, cheesy, and the fried onions on top were perfect. I might add a pinch of paprika next time for extra flavor.

  41. 3 stars
I forgot the mushrooms once and it was still good, so I think this recipe could be flexible. Still, the mushrooms definitely add depth.

    1. User avatar Liet-Kynes says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—mushrooms definitely bring that extra savory “depth.” But it’s nice to know it still works if you’re missing them. I sometimes swap in sautéed onions instead when I’m short on time, and it’s still super creamy.

    2. User avatar homer.abbott82 says:

      4 stars
I think the mushrooms are kinda optional. Like, the cheddar and cream already do the heavy lifting. Last time I left them out (kinda accident), mine was still good, just not as “fancy.” Would try again though—maybe I just didn’t cook the onions enough lol.

  42. User avatar caren.schamberger says:

    2 stars
meh, too rich for me. also 350 is kinda low? idk.

    1. User avatar kieth.hudson40 says:

      4 stars
Totally get it—this one is definitely on the rich side with the heavy cream + cheddar. But 350°F isn’t low; it’s just a steady bake so the sauce heats through without burning the onions.

  43. User avatar sol.casper1978 says:

    4 stars
My family likes green bean casserole but they usually say mine is “too watery.” This time it wasn’t watery at all, so I’m keeping this version.

    1. User avatar hilda.mccullough2001 says:

      5 stars
Love that you finally nailed it—mine used to be watery too. I think using fresh beans and draining well makes a big difference. Great to hear this version holds up!

  44. User avatar arlen.bosco93 says:

    5 stars
This is the kind of casserole that makes people stop talking mid-bite. The golden fried onions on top are perfection.

  45. User avatar Frostbite Spider says:

    4 stars
My kid doesn’t like green beans… but he ate this! I guess the cheese works magic.

  46. User avatar jae.treutel says:

    3 stars
I don’t know, it seemed kinda mushy? Maybe cook the beans less? 🤷‍♀️

    1. User avatar mattie.wyman33 says:

      4 stars
I thought the beans were perfect! Maybe try adjusting your cooking time, or maybe your oven temp is off? 🤔

  47. User avatar anonymous_hacker says:

    5 stars
This looks like the perfect cozy side dish. The combo of mushrooms + cheddar + those crispy onions on top is exactly what I want at holiday dinners.

  48. 4 stars
Not bad… but I got confused and forgot to put the onions halfway in 😅 still tasty though, kind of like cheesy green bean bake.

  49. User avatar kevin.heidenreich70 says:

    3 stars
Way too rich for me, I guess. Also I accidentally used garlic powder instead of minced garlic—still tasty, just not the same.

  50. 5 stars
Made it tonight and it turned out really creamy. I used extra pepper and it still felt balanced. Would definitely bake it a few minutes longer next time for extra browning.

  51. 5 stars
Delish!!! 😍 I’ll be making this again for Thanksgiving!

  52. 4 stars
Made something similar once and it was so creamy. The 350°F bake time seems spot-on—can’t wait to try it with fresh green beans.

    1. User avatar Falmer Nightprowler says:

      5 stars
Fresh green beans will be sooo good in this—350°F and the cream-cheese sauce combo is exactly what makes it creamy. Let us know how it turns out!

  53. User avatar garrett.herzog30 says:

    5 stars
This was a hit at our family dinner! So cheesy and delicious. I added some bacon bits for extra flavor.

  54. 3 stars
Not bad, but I found it a bit too rich for my taste. Heavy cream + cheddar is a lot—could use more green beans or less sauce.

  55. User avatar ebonie.feest2001 says:

    2 stars
I tried making this but was out of heavy cream, so I used milk. It didn’t turn out great. Can someone tell me if that was the issue?

  56. 4 stars
I didn’t have fresh green beans, so I used canned ones. Still came out good! Not as crunchy tho.

    1. User avatar kaylee.quigley22 says:

      2 stars
Canned green beans?? That’s not the same! You miss the texture. Fresh ones are way better. Just my opinion.

    2. User avatar dorie.medhurst2015 says:

      4 stars
Canned beans can work! I sometimes use them too when I’m in a pinch. Glad it turned out good!

  57. User avatar Eddie the Computer says:

    4 stars
I’m skeptical of heavy cream + cheddar, but wow it actually worked. Sauce came together nicely and the mushrooms add depth.

  58. User avatar narcisa.boyer45 says:

    4 stars
I loved it! But I think there’s too many onions. Next time I’ll cut back.

  59. User avatar Alex Nicolas says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but I’m skeptical about all that heavy cream. It felt kinda heavy for a side dish, if that makes sense. Still, the sauce is undeniably tasty.

    1. User avatar Humma Kavula says:

      4 stars
I get what you mean—heavy cream is definitely the “rich” part. But once it bakes and the cheese melts, it ends up like a creamy coating rather than a super thick, heavy sauce. If you want it lighter, you could use half-and-half or even cut the cream a bit and still keep the flavor.

  60. User avatar Bowerick Wowbagger says:

    3 stars
I followed the steps exactly, but my garlic tasted a little raw? Maybe my mushrooms held the heat too long. Still tasty though.

  61. User avatar Hasimir Fenring says:

    3 stars
I’m skeptical about cooking the beans only 5 minutes—won’t they still be kinda crisp after 25 minutes total? Maybe I’ll blanch longer just in case.

  62. 5 stars
I made this for dinner and it has become my go-to recipe! So tasty and easy!!

  63. User avatar Eccentrica Gallumbits says:

    5 stars
This turned out super creamy and cheesy—comfort food done right. I added a little extra pepper and it was perfect.

    1. 5 stars
Yes! Extra pepper is the move—this casserole really shines when it has that little kick. Glad it came out creamy and cheesy for you.

  64. 4 stars
I used frozen green beans and baked a few minutes longer. Still came out good, just make sure the sauce is nice and thick.

  65. 4 stars
Not gonna lie, my garlic burned a tiny bit in the pan. The sauce still recovered, but I’d keep the heat lower.

  66. User avatar liza.turner says:

    3 stars
I’m skeptical about 5 minutes boiling—my green beans were still a little too crisp. Maybe I just got thicker ones, but I’d probably cook them 7-8 minutes.

  67. User avatar Dusti Jerde says:

    4 stars
umm i dont got mushrooms 😅 can i skip them? will it still be okay?

  68. 5 stars
This sounds dangerously comforting. I love the combo of mushrooms + cheddar with the fried onions on top—exactly the holiday vibe.

    1. 3 stars
Wait—do you bake it twice? Also I think 5 min for green beans might be short. I’d like it softer than crunchy. But the cheddar + fried onions part sounds dangerous lol.

    2. User avatar merlin.lebsack says:

      5 stars
Yes!! The mushrooms make it feel so “grown up” while still being totally classic. I’m stealing this for Christmas dinner.

  69. User avatar burl.grimes60 says:

    3 stars
I’m skeptical about cooking green beans only 5 minutes. They were okay, but I’d probably par-cook a bit less next time to avoid softness after baking.

  70. User avatar meredith.homenick30 says:

    2 stars
Lowkey boring… like it tastes like “casserole” without any real zing. Add some cayenne or nutmeg maybe?

  71. User avatar cockroach says:

    4 stars
I used pre-sliced garlic from a jar and it was still good. Also I forgot to salt the water (oops) but the casserole turned out fine. Would recommend!

  72. 4 stars
Not bad, but I might use a bit less salt. 1/2 tsp with the cheese + onions might be too salty for my taste.

  73. User avatar Michael83 says:

    3 stars
Not gonna lie, I expected it to be thicker. After baking it was still pretty creamy, but not bad—just different than I thought.

  74. User avatar trinidad.collins75 says:

    4 stars
Honestly, 350°F for 25 minutes total felt like a sweet spot—golden top but not dry. Would make again.

  75. User avatar wellRespected says:

    3 stars
Way too salty for my taste. I’d cut the salt in half, especially since cheddar can be salty already. Otherwise the texture was nice.

  76. User avatar Penny Bunn says:

    3 stars
I followed the steps but my sauce came out kinda thick and not super smooth—maybe the cheese didn’t melt fully because my heat was too low? Still edible, just not as creamy as I expected. Flavor is solid though.

  77. User avatar Ice Wolf says:

    3 stars
Way too much dairy for me personally, but I can see why people like it. If you like cheesy comfort food, this is it.

  78. User avatar hue.crooks3 says:

    4 stars
Okay but why does mine keep separating a little? I followed the steps… maybe my cheddar wasn’t melting right? Still tasted good though.

    1. 4 stars
Mine used to do that too—usually it’s the cheese/cream combo not fully emulsifying. I’d try shredding cheddar yourself (bagged can have anti-caking stuff) and keep the heat on medium-low so the sauce melts smoothly before mixing with the beans.

    2. 2 stars
Hmm maybe you overcooked the green beans? Or the cheddar was too old? Also I feel like heavy cream should be added after baking… idk lol. If it tasted good though, you’re fine.

  79. User avatar fredrick.rowe says:

    3 stars
Why mushrooms? I feel like green bean casserole should be simple. But I tried anyway and the sauce was creamy, so… I guess it works.

    1. User avatar fransisca.moore10 says:

      4 stars
Totally get it—mushrooms sound like extra effort for something that *should* be simple. But sautéing them in the butter + garlic basically turns them into flavor, so that creamy sauce makes sense. If you liked it, you’re not wrong—it’s still classic comfort food, just with a little depth.

  80. User avatar rochelle.towne1988 says:

    5 stars
The math is fine but my kitchen never is 😅 I probably used more than 1 cup cheese. It still turned out cheesy and awesome.

  81. User avatar suellen.hills9 says:

    5 stars
This is exactly the kind of comfort food I want for holidays. The garlic-mushroom base smells amazing, and the cheddar sauce clings to the beans perfectly. Mine browned nicely with the extra onions on top—will make again.

  82. User avatar Shaddam Corrino IV says:

    4 stars
Pretty good! I used frozen green beans since I didn’t have fresh, and it still worked, though I think I overcooked them a little because mine got soft. Next time I’ll reduce the blanch time. Sauce was rich and tasty.

  83. User avatar darrell.mcclure says:

    5 stars
Looks delish. 10/10 would make again.

  84. User avatar ALTplusF4 says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but I thought it needed more seasoning. The garlic and mushrooms were good, but the whole thing tasted a bit flat compared to my usual casserole. Still ate it all though!

    1. User avatar trey.hudson18 says:

      4 stars
Good to hear you still ate it all 😄 I wonder if 1/2 tsp salt is a little light—next time I’d bump salt/pepper and maybe add a pinch of garlic powder or onion powder to avoid that “flat” taste.

  85. User avatar Hasimir Fenring says:

    5 stars
My family would not stop eating this. The crunch from the onions stays way better than I expected after baking.

    1. User avatar jules.schuster says:

Totally agree! I was shocked the onions stayed crunchy too—mine came out golden and didn’t go soggy at all. This is now my go-to casserole.

I dunno, 5 minutes in boiling water seems kinda short—my beans were still a little firm after baking. Still tasted good though, and the cheese sauce is rich.

I’m skeptical about cooking the beans only 5 minutes—felt underdone until I baked it longer. Next time I’ll steam them a bit more first.

I swapped garlic for garlic powder (half a tsp). Turned out flavorful. Just be careful—powder can get bitter if cooked too long.

Pretty good, but I think 5 minutes for boiling green beans is a little too long—mine were a bit soft. Next time I’ll do like 3 minutes so they stay more crisp.

This sounds dangerously good. The combo of mushrooms + cheddar + that buttery fried onions on top? I’m in.

Pretty solid comfort food. I added a little extra garlic and it tasted even better the next day.

Garlic always makes it better 😄 I bet reheated it gets even more flavorful too.
