Cheese Charcuterie

July 22, 2024

A cheese charcuterie board is the ideal way to bring together a variety of flavors, textures, and colors in one stunning display. Whether for a casual get-together, a holiday celebration, or just a cozy evening at home, a cheese charcuterie board offers an elegant and inviting way to enjoy a wide selection of cheeses, meats, and accompaniments.

At its core, a cheese charcuterie board is about variety. The selection of cheeses is key to creating balance. You can choose a mix of textures, from soft, creamy Brie and tangy goat cheese to sharp, crumbly blue cheese or nutty aged cheddar. Offering a range of flavors, from mild to bold and creamy to crumbly, ensures that everyone will find a favorite.

Adding charcuterie to the board gives it even more depth. Think thinly sliced prosciutto, salami, or chorizo. These cured meats provide a savory contrast to the richness of the cheeses and complement the overall flavors. The saltiness of the meats also pairs beautifully with sweeter accompaniments like fruits, jams, and honey.

Accompaniments are key to elevating a cheese charcuterie board. Fresh and dried fruits like grapes, figs, and apples add sweetness. Nuts such as almonds, walnuts, or pistachios contribute crunch, while crackers or artisanal bread offer a base for spreading cheese or enjoying on their own. Pickles or olives can provide a briny bite to balance the richness of the cheeses and meats.

The beauty of a cheese charcuterie board is its flexibility. You can customize it based on your preferences, dietary restrictions, or the season. For example, in the fall, you might add roasted nuts, pumpkin preserves, and a few slices of pear, while in the summer, fresh berries and figs can brighten up the board.

A well-crafted cheese charcuterie board isn’t just about taste; it’s about creating a visual feast. The variety of textures and colors, from creamy whites and deep blues to golden yellows and rich reds, makes the board as pleasing to the eye as it is to the palate.

This recipe is made by Shannon Stork-Patterson.

Cheese charcuterie is a perfect way to combine a variety of cheeses, meats, and accompaniments. A delicious and visually appealing option for any gathering or special occasion.
Servings 10 people
Prep Time 40 minutes
Total Time 40 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1/2 lb Cheese At least 6 types – Soft (Brie, Havarti, Goat, Mozzarella balls), Semi-Hard (Cheddar, Parmesan, Provolone)
  • 20 slices Prosciutto
  • 20 slices Hard Genoa Salami
  • 20 slices Sopressata
  • 2 cups Assorted fruit (Dried fruits, raspberries, grapes)
  • 1 cup Nuts
  • 2 cups Veggies (Carrots, Celery, Sweet Peppers, Cucumbers)
  • 1 cup Marinated Pickled/Olive Mixture
  • 1 pound Assorted chocolate
  • 1/2 cup balsamic vinegar
  • 20 Crackers
  • 20 Baguette
  • 100 Mini Pretzels
  • 25 Bagel Chips

Instructions

  • Clean and sanitize your work area.
  • Choose your board, depending on your party size. You could always use multiple boards if needed.
  • Cut your cheeses in different sizes and shapes and place around the board.
  • Fold and add the meats: there are youtube videos on fun ways to fold cured meats before placing them on the board, like folding them in half and fanning them out, or folding them in half twice, so they are easy to grab. For thin meat (like prosciutto) fold them in a light and airy ribbon.
  • Add savory and sweet accompaniments. Fill in some of the gaps with savory and sweet.
  • Separate colors in a way that allows the brightest colors to stand out and place foods together that pair well together.
  • Pair sweet accompaniments like fresh fruit, jams, and candied nuts, near the brie cheese or goat cheese.
  • Fill in extra space with crackers.
  • Fill any extra gaps with nuts or fruit.
  • Other additional ideas: Hummus, Kalamata Olives, black olives, pickled mushrooms, trail mix, small pickles, multi grain crackers, strawberries, blackberries, guacamole, tortilla chips, sun chips, pickled artichokes, blue cheese crumbles, yogurt covered pretzels or nuts, cherries, apple slices, dips. The possibilities are endless.

Um, why are there that many types of cheese? Seems like overkill to me. What if you don’t like one?

    1. User avatar Crysta Monahan says:

      5 stars
I think the variety is great! Different cheeses have unique flavors that can make the experience more enjoyable. Plus, if you don’t like one, you can just try another! It’s about exploring tastes.

    2. 2 stars
But what if you have a cheese allergy or just don’t like any of them? Seems like a waste, I dunno. Why not just pick one or two that everyone can agree on?

  2. User avatar malcom.buckridge says:

    4 stars
Honestly, for a party of 10 you could just buy a couple cheese packs and pretend it’s artisan. But this list is actually detailed, so I might do it proper this time.

  3. User avatar lakeesha.wuckert says:

    3 stars
Not sure about “cheese at least 6 types” when I shop—plus 1/2 lb total for 10 people sounds a bit low? Still, the layout ideas are solid.

  4. User avatar sterling.nienow2020 says:

    3 stars
I followed this but my board looked nothing like the picture! I guess I’m not as artistic as I thought. 😂

  5. User avatar zofia.swaniawski24 says:

    3 stars
So much work for a board? Why not just put it all on a plate? 🤔

    1. User avatar isabelle.sauer60 says:

      4 stars
I get what you mean, but it’s not just about the effort! The presentation makes the flavors pop! It’s totally worth it for a party vibe. 🎉

  6. User avatar Chaurus Hunter says:

    3 stars
Honestly, do I need 100 mini pretzels? Seems like overkill.

  7. User avatar Nell Gleichner V says:

    4 stars
Great recipe! I added some spicy nuts and it was a hit! Saved me at my party.

  8. User avatar merrill.hudson47 says:

Cheese is life! 😍 Can’t wait to make this for my party next week!!

  9. User avatar kiesha.adams20 says:

    4 stars
I love the color separation tip—bright stuff at the front makes it look fancy. I’m definitely stealing that for my next party.

  10. User avatar ethan.johns1978 says:

    2 stars
Wait, you say sanitize your work area… for cheese? Do people really do that? I mean sure, but seems overkill. Still, nice organized layout.

  11. 5 stars
My favorite part is the nuts + chocolate combo. This is the kind of board that disappears fast—especially with bagel chips and pretzels.

  12. 5 stars
    Get Creative, FUN!

  13. 4 stars
Brie near the goat cheese and fruit near the brie—cool. I always forget pairings and end up with random piles. This gives me a plan.

  14. User avatar latonia.mante38 says:

    4 stars
My kids loved picking stuff off the board! Great way to make them eat veggies! 🎉

  15. 5 stars
Delicious combo! My family devoured it, especially the fruits with the cheese.

  16. User avatar travis.conroy54 says:

    5 stars
This looks amazing! Can’t wait to try it for my weekend gathering. The variety of cheeses is perfect!

  17. User avatar junior.price2012 says:

    4 stars
Delicious! Instead of raspberries, I used strawberries and it was a hit! Thanks for the idea! 🧀

  18. User avatar enrique.russel19 says:

    5 stars
This looks insanely snackable. I love that you included both soft and semi-hard cheeses—my board always needs more variety. Also the sweet spots near brie/goat is a nice touch.

    1. User avatar johnny.deckow38 says:

      3 stars
Not gonna lie, “snackable” is right. I’d probably swap the balsamic vinegar for something sweeter though—balsamic can get kinda strong. Also are the mozzarella balls supposed to be fresh or smoked?

    2. User avatar Slaughterfish says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—having that soft + semi-hard mix makes the whole board feel way more “real” and not just random cheese cubes. Brie/goat + something sweet is such a cheat code 😄

  19. User avatar george.denesik10 says:

    1 star
Ok but why is balsamic vinegar in this? Seems weird to me.

  20. User avatar contessa.dickinson47 says:

    5 stars
This looks amazing! Can’t wait to try it for my party this weekend. Love all the cheese options!!

  21. User avatar Arthur Philip Deodat says:

    3 stars
Is there a reason for using balsamic vinegar? Doesn’t it clash with the cheese? Just asking…

    1. User avatar marvin.tremblay says:

      4 stars
Balsamic vinegar adds a nice tangy sweetness that can really complement the cheeses! I think it works well together.

    2. 2 stars
I don’t get it, isn’t vinegar supposed to make stuff sour? Cheese is already rich, sounds confusing to me.

  22. User avatar Draugr Thrall says:

    5 stars
Absolutely loved this! The variety of cheeses was fantastic. Really enjoyed the prosciutto.

  23. 3 stars
Honestly, it seems a bit overwhelming with all these ingredients. Can’t I just buy cheese and crackers?

    1. 4 stars
I get that it looks like a lot, but it’s worth it! A cheese and cracker board can be boring compared to this. Try it, you might love it!

  24. User avatar sharri.herman2022 says:

    5 stars
Yum!!! Cheese is life! 🧀🎉 Gonna make this tomorrow

    1. User avatar katherin.tillman83 says:

Sounds amazing! Can’t wait to see how it turns out! 🧀🥳

  25. User avatar georgina.johnston says:

    2 stars
Looks nice, but can you really mix so many flavors? I’m not sure if that’s a good idea.

  26. User avatar ralph.schaden1975 says:

    2 stars
Very basic. You could just throw out some cheese and some meat. Don’t see the fuss.

    1. User avatar wellRespected says:

      5 stars
I think it’s more than just throwing some cheese and meat! It’s about presentation and variety! 😍

  27. User avatar NAFO.SUPREMACY says:

    5 stars
This looks absolutely delicious! Can’t wait to try it for my next gathering. 🧀🍇

    1. 3 stars
Looks good but is it really that easy? Too many things to prepare, might just order pizza instead. 😕

    2. 5 stars
Sounds like a perfect plan! I love cheese boards, they really bring everyone together. 🧀❤️

  28. User avatar harry.leffler56 says:

    5 stars
This looks dangerously good. I love that it mixes soft + semi-hard cheeses and then gives so many pairing ideas. Might be a little more chaos than I can manage, but I’m in.

    1. User avatar Super Saiyan Goku says:

      5 stars
I agree—cheese boards that do a “soft + semi-hard” mix hit different. 😄 Also the folding tips for prosciutto are clutch. I’d probably simplify the accompaniments a bit though so it doesn’t turn into a full-time job.

  29. User avatar judson.fay89 says:

    5 stars
I tried making this and ended up just eating half the cheese before serving. 😂

    1. User avatar dwight.pfannerstill7 says:

      5 stars
Haha, I totally relate! The cheese is always too tempting! 🧀😂

    2. User avatar Darren Deeds says:

      3 stars
You know, it’s a charcuterie board, not just cheese board! Did you try the fruits or meats? 🤔

  30. User avatar Tricia McMillan says:

    4 stars
I made this for my friend’s birthday party and it was a hit! Everyone loved it and it was so colorful!

    1. User avatar chris.cummerata3 says:

      2 stars
I don’t know, this seems a bit too much food for one board. How does that even fit?!

    2. 5 stars
That’s awesome! 🎉 I’ve always wanted to try making a charcuterie board. Do you have any tips for arranging it?

  31. 3 stars
Yummy! Can I just leave out the olive stuff? Not a fan!

  32. User avatar Mrs. Nolan Mraz says:

    3 stars
Nice idea! But why does balsamic vinegar need to be on this? Isn’t that for salads? 😂

  33. 5 stars
This looks amazing! Can’t wait to try it for my next gathering.

  34. User avatar Clora McGlynn says:

    1 star
Boring! Who needs this when you can just have pizza? 😂

  35. User avatar Latrice Robel says:

    3 stars
Not sure why there are bagel chips and pretzels *and* crackers—kinda too many crunch options. But hey, if it works for the crowd, it works.

    1. User avatar Reg Nullify says:

      5 stars
Honestly I love having multiple crunch options—people can pick what they’re in the mood for. Bagel chips + pretzels + crackers is basically a “choose your own snack” thing 😅

    2. User avatar cherlyn.mohr35 says:

      4 stars
I get what you mean, but I think the trick is spacing them out and not putting all the crunchy stuff in one corner. Otherwise yeah, it’s overload.

  36. User avatar Latoria Kris Jr. says:

    4 stars
I don’t get the step about sanitzing—like obviously. But the rest is pretty straightforward. Probably gonna follow and improvise.

  37. User avatar fredda.bauch8 says:

    5 stars
This recipe is AMAZING! I tried it for a gathering and my guests loved it.

  38. User avatar granville.koss1990 says:

    3 stars
Uhh, isn’t that like, too much food? Who can eat that much cheese? Seems crazy.

  39. User avatar Galaxia Woonbeam says:

    2 stars
Too much stuff. Like, I can’t find the flavor balance—how do you keep it from tasting like “everything at once”? Maybe label allergens…

  40. User avatar rocky.frami2013 says:

    3 stars
Yummm! But what about vegans? Not everyone likes cheese! Should include more options.

  41. 4 stars
You forgot to mention that you can use any cheese you like! I used all cheddar and it was still good.

    1. User avatar milo.gusikowski99 says:

      3 stars
But doesn’t using just cheddar make it kind of one-note? I mean, isn’t part of the fun trying different flavors?

    2. 5 stars
Absolutely! Cheese is so versatile, and cheddar totally works! I usually use a mix too.

  42. User avatar Hotblack Desiato says:

    5 stars
Cheese and meat, what else do you need? Perfect for my game night!

  43. User avatar Leto II Atreides says:

    5 stars
    cheese heaven

  44. User avatar onita.marvin1969 says:

    1 star
I don’t get the fuss over charcuterie boards. Just put cheese and crackers on a plate. 🤷

  45. User avatar NAFO.SUPREMACY says:

    4 stars
The ingredient list is wild—in a good way. But “sanatize” (jk) and “possibilities are endless” makes me think this is more like a guideline than an exact recipe. Still, I’m trying it.

  46. User avatar dustin.kuhn62 says:

    5 stars
Used 5 types of cheese and it looked amazing! Everyone loved it! Gonna make again!

  47. User avatar kristle.harris83 says:

    4 stars
I tried a charcuterie once and it turned into a snack pile. This recipe’s “separate colors” step is what I needed. Also mini pretzels on top? Yes.

  48. User avatar khadijah.towne says:

    4 stars
Yum! Can I substitute some cheeses? I can’t find goat cheese anywhere.

  49. 5 stars
Absolutely wonderful! This recipe is a game changer for gatherings. Everyone loved it!

  50. User avatar doyle.carroll74 says:

    4 stars
Love all the colors in this! Perfect for a summer gathering. Just a tip: you might wanna leave out the olives for picky eaters. 😛

  51. 4 stars
Never thought of using dried fruit! Cool idea! 🤩

  52. 3 stars
This is just a snack tray, right? Don’t get all fancy on me.

  53. User avatar Effrafax of Wug says:

    5 stars
I followed the instructions exactly, and it turned out beautiful! Everyone loved it. ❤️

  54. User avatar carol.leuschke says:

    5 stars
YUM, I substituted chocolate with cookies and it was still a hit!

  55. User avatar clyde.becker44 says:

    2 stars
Baguette, pretzels, bagel chips… are we sure this isn’t just a snack board with cheese vibes? 😅

  56. 2 stars
Not gonna lie, the “possibilities are endless” line made me laugh. It’s true though—once you have cheese and crackers, everything else is basically optional.

  57. User avatar renato.grady1992 says:

    5 stars
Wohoo, this is gonna be fun to prepare! Got to show off! 🎉

  58. User avatar taryn.veum66 says:

    2 stars
I don’t understand the fuss with charcuterie boards. Just give me a sandwich. This is too extra!

  59. 2 stars
This recipe is very similar to one I saw on YouTube. I think it’s too much work for me, haha. Who has the time?

  60. 3 stars
Looks great, but do I really need that many meats? Can’t I just do peppers and bread? Simple is better!

  61. User avatar Genghis Khan says:

    4 stars
Very good balance of flavors! I didn’t use pickles but added some olives and it worked out great!

    1. User avatar tissues_with_issues says:

      3 stars
Not sure about olives, but I guess if it worked for you, it’s worth a try! I just love my pickles too much 😅.

    2. User avatar morris.altenwerth says:

      4 stars
Olives, huh? That’s a twist! I usually go with pickles too, but I might give this a shot. Thanks for the idea!

  62. 5 stars
This looks amazing! Can’t wait to try it for my next party!

    1. User avatar pinkie.becker1994 says:

      5 stars
Thanks! It really is a showstopper, perfect for parties! Let me know how it goes!

  63. 4 stars
The instruction numbers are kinda weird (skips from 2 to 9 then back to 5/8). But honestly, the vibe is solid. I’d totally do this for a movie night board situation.

    1. User avatar isabel.farrell74 says:

      5 stars
Right?? That instruction numbering had me like “wait… did I miss steps?” 😂 But the layout tips are perfect for movie night—looks way more intentional than my usual snacks.

    2. User avatar terminatorXYZ says:

      3 stars
I see the cheese/meat/fruit idea, but who’s got time to sanitize and then “fold meats like a pro”? Also 20 slices each sounds like a lot… unless you’re feeding like a whole crew. Still, charcuterie is hard to mess up.

  64. User avatar maria.mayert6 says:

    2 stars
Seems a bit too complicated for me. Why so many types of cheese? 3 should be enough. 😬

    1. User avatar Lita Mante says:

      4 stars
I get what you mean, but the variety actually makes it special! You can pick what you like. 😋

    2. User avatar danelle.erdman73 says:

      5 stars
Nah, 3 cheeses ain’t enough! You need the flavors to mix! 🍕🧀

  65. 5 stars
This looks dangerously good. Like… I’d eat half the cheese before it even gets to the board 😅 The folding/fanning idea is smart too.

    1. User avatar twyla.sporer says:

      5 stars
Right?? 😅 If I’m being honest, I’d “test” the cheese way too early. The folding tip also makes it look fancy without actually doing anything dramatic.

    2. User avatar ambrose.bernhard20 says:

      3 stars
I don’t know… “fold and fan” sounds like a TikTok trick. Prosciutto is already thin, so I’d just lay it flat and call it a day. But yeah the cheese is the real hero.

  66. User avatar florentino.rippin2007 says:

    5 stars
I added grapes and strawberries! So colorful and tasty! 🌈

    1. 5 stars
Grapes and strawberries? That’s genius! 🍓🍇 I never thought of adding those to a cheese board! Definitely gonna try this next time! 😋

  67. User avatar natividad.kihn2007 says:

    4 stars
I tried something similar once and it turned into chaos. Having a plan for colors + pairing near brie/goat is the difference maker. Thanks!

    1. User avatar nathan.sipes12 says:

      2 stars
Not gonna lie, I think color planning is overhyped. Cheese is cheese, just throw it all out there. If it tastes good, who cares what shade the grapes are 😅

    2. User avatar hassie.reynolds90 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—once I stopped “dumping everything on the board” and started grouping colors + flavors, it looked way better and nobody complained 😂. Brie/goat area is such a solid move.

  68. User avatar rosanne.gerhold says:

    3 stars
Whoa, that’s a lot of different types of cheese! What if I only like cheddar?

    1. 5 stars
You can totally make a board with just cheddar! Just focus on what you love, and maybe try some different flavored cheddars if you’re adventurous!

    2. User avatar Piter De Vries says:

      3 stars
I dunno, that sounds kinda bland if you ask me. Cheese is all about the variety. Cheddar’s good, but what’s wrong with a lil’ taste test?

  69. User avatar Shadowfax says:

    4 stars
“Possibilities are endless” is true but also a trap. I’d be there adding hummus, guac, and olives until midnight.

  70. User avatar jeff.torp1989 says:

    3 stars
Not gonna lie, I’m skeptical about the balsamic vinegar amount. 1/2 cup is a lot… are you drizzling or dunking the veggies? The wording isn’t clear.

  71. User avatar joe.witting88 says:

    2 stars
How come this says 6 types of cheese but only lists 5? Seems fishy to me…

  72. User avatar lizzzard says:

    3 stars
I’ve made a charcuterie board before, but this one seems way too fancy for me. I just usually slap some cheese and meat on a plate! 😂

  73. 5 stars
5 stars! This recipe is everything! So good and looks fancy too!

    1. User avatar cayla.wuckert says:

      5 stars
Totally agree! This recipe is a game changer for parties! 🎉

    2. User avatar Marcelle O'Conner Jr. says:

      3 stars
Looks great, but isn’t it a bit too much cheese? I’m more of a simple platter person.

  74. User avatar quentin.kris says:

    2 stars
I like cheese, but I ain’t got time to make this fancy board. Just gimme some cheddar, please!

  75. User avatar bobbie.rutherford60 says:

    4 stars
Made this for a party. Everyone loved it! Especially the goat cheese!

  76. User avatar derek.tillman87 says:

    4 stars
Sounds tasty but where do the pickles fit in tho? 🤔

  77. User avatar brigette.lebsack23 says:

    4 stars
For me the best part is the fruit and nuts—cheese alone gets boring. This has a good mix, even with all the random extras.

    1. 5 stars
Totally get that—cheese by itself can get monotonous fast. The fruit + nuts really breaks it up (and gives you something different with every bite).

    2. User avatar Biff Wellington says:

      2 stars
I mean… I like the idea, but “random extras” sounds like a mess. Like, why the chocolate AND olives AND guacamole? Feels like it might clash lol.

  78. User avatar siobhan.lebsack says:

    1 star
Not really my vibe. Like… too much stuff to handle. I prefer simple snacks.

  79. User avatar stephanie.considine1965 says:

    4 stars
I added some grapes and it turned out delicious! Thanks for the inspiration! 🍇🧀

  80. User avatar MAGA2024.Trumpster says:

    5 stars
This cheese board is everything! Made it for my family gathering and everyone loved it! 🔥
