Caprese Salad

September 15, 2023

Caprese Salad is the embodiment of simplicity and freshness, showcasing the beauty of high-quality ingredients without the need for elaborate preparation. Originating from the Italian island of Capri, this timeless salad is a celebration of three core elements: ripe tomatoes, creamy mozzarella, and fragrant basil. When paired with a drizzle of olive oil and a splash of balsamic glaze or vinegar, the result is a dish that’s both light and flavorful, making it a favorite during the warm summer months.

What makes Caprese Salad so special is its balance. The acidity of the tomatoes cuts through the richness of the mozzarella, while the basil adds a bright, aromatic finish. A touch of sea salt and freshly cracked black pepper ties everything together. It’s a dish that proves less is often more, especially when the ingredients are fresh and seasonal.

Caprese Salad isn’t just a starter, it can be served in a variety of ways. Layer it beautifully on a platter for a colorful appetizer, stack it in small portions for individual servings, or even skewer the ingredients for a fun party presentation. Add a splash of pesto or a few slices of avocado for a creative twist.

Whether you’re hosting a summer gathering, looking for a light lunch, or craving something refreshing and healthy, Caprese Salad delivers. It’s a dish that brings a little taste of Italy to your table – vibrant, simple, and always satisfying.

It’s just tomatoes and cheese. I don’t get the hype.

    1. 4 stars
But it’s not just that! It’s about the flavors blending together. Maybe you need better ingredients?

You just don’t get it because you haven’t tried a good one! The freshness makes all the difference. 🍅🍃

Tomato cheese salad?? what a weird mix 😂 but I guess it works.

Why do you put olives in it? Olives ruin everything. Just stick to tomatoes & cheese, nuh?

The instructions are super straightforward, which I like. I did notice my mozzarella was a bit watery though—next time I’ll pat it dry before slicing.

Super simple to put together, but what’s with the salt and pepper? Is that really necessary? 🤔

I followed it exactly and it turned out… fine. Like, not bad, just kind of plain. Maybe I used not-so-great tomatoes? Olive oil was tasty at least.

So fresh!! I could eat this every day!!!

Every day? Really? Isn’t that a bit much? Might get boring after a while. Just saying.

    2. 5 stars
I totally agree! This salad is so fresh and bursting with flavor. Perfect for summer!

  12. 4 stars
I slapped some balsamic vinegar on top and it was delish! Just a pro-tip 🙂

That sounds tasty! Balsamic vinegar is always a great addition. I never thought of that for a Caprese salad. Thanks for the tip!

Idk, balsamic on Caprese? Isn’t that kinda weird? I prefer it just simple with the cheese and tomatoes. But you do you!

This is not how grandma made it! She always added garlic. You’re missing out!

    1. User avatar kay.upton74 says:

      5 stars
I totally agree! Garlic makes everything better. I’ll be adding some next time!

    2. 3 stars
Nah, I think it’s fine as is. Garlic in a salad? That’s new to me!

  14. User avatar kathie.hoeger25 says:

I tried this once and my mozzarella slid right off the tomatoes lol. Also I didn’t have fresh basil, so I used dried and it was terrible. Fresh matters, I guess.

    1. 2 stars
Maybe you should just use shredded mozzarella? Or like, cook it a lil so it sticks. Also dried basil isn’t THAT bad… I think you might’ve used way too much olive oil or salt. Idk 🤷

    2. User avatar NAFO.SUPREMACY says:

      5 stars
Ugh the mozzarella sliding is so real 😅 Did you drain the mozzarella really well? Mine holds better when it’s not too wet. And yeah, fresh basil vs dried is night and day.

  15. 4 stars
Really good but I added balsamic, tasted amazing!

Balsamic sounds like a great twist! I’m definitely trying that next time.

  16. User avatar zofia.watsica1975 says:

Eh, I mean, it was okay but I expected more flavor. I should have added garlic or something.

Salad sounds good and all, but where’s the meat?!

  18. User avatar jorge.koepp99 says:

Is mozzarella supposed to be soft like that? Mine was hard.

Caprese Salad? More like… Caprese YAWN. 😴

      I think it’s a classic! Can’t go wrong with fresh ingredients. 😍

    2. User avatar loren.fahey says:

But it’s so simple! I prefer dishes with more flavors, ya know? 🤷‍♂️

Not gonna lie, I’m skeptical about the ‘serve immediately’ part. I ate it 20 minutes later and it was fine, not mind-blowing.
