Buttery dinner rolls are the epitome of comfort food, with soft, pillowy interiors and golden, slightly crispy exteriors. These rolls are the perfect accompaniment to any meal, from holiday feasts to casual weeknight dinners, offering a warm and indulgent touch to your table.
The dough is made with a combination of flour, yeast, butter, sugar, and milk, creating a rich and tender base. The yeast gives the rolls a light, airy texture, while the butter adds richness and flavor. After mixing, the dough is kneaded until smooth, then left to rise, allowing the yeast to work its magic and make the dough beautifully soft and fluffy.
Once the dough has risen, it’s divided into small portions and shaped into individual rolls. After a second rise, the rolls are baked until golden brown. During the baking process, the buttery aroma fills the kitchen, teasing your senses and making the anticipation all the sweeter. After baking, the rolls are brushed with more melted butter to enhance their glossy, golden finish and add extra richness.
These buttery dinner rolls are melt-in-your-mouth soft, with a slight crispiness on the outside and a tender, moist interior. They are perfect for sopping up gravy, dipping into sauces, or enjoying on their own with a pat of butter or jam.
They pair wonderfully with a variety of main dishes, including roasted meats, soups, and salads. For a holiday spread, they are often served alongside turkey, ham, or beef, adding a comforting touch to every bite.
For drinks, pair them with a glass of white wine like Chardonnay, or opt for a warm beverage like herbal tea or hot apple cider for a cozy feel.
Buttery dinner rolls are a must-try for any bread lover and will quickly become a favorite at your dinner table, offering both comfort and indulgence in every bite.

These rolls were delicious! So buttery and soft, I’ll definitely make them again!
I’m not a baker usually, but these was easy. Kinda fiddly, but worth it.
I messed up and forgot to cover with a damp cloth—dough skin happened and the rise was meh. Still edible though, and the butter brushing helped. Learn from me!
Ugh, dough skin is the worst 😭—but honestly “still edible” is a win. Thanks for the real-life lesson about keeping it covered!
Is it just me or do these taste kinda weird? Not how I remember rolls tasting.
These are okay, but mine didn’t really brown much even at 18 minutes. Also I think my milk was warmer than 110F? Not sure. Flavor was buttery though.
They say you can replace butter with oil, anyone tried that? Just asking, don’t wanna ruin it.
Okay, so I messed up the yeast part and they didn’t rise right. Still tasted good, but not the same. Anyone else had this happen?
I totally feel you! Yeast can be tricky sometimes. At least they still tasted good! Next time, maybe try checking the water temperature more closely? Good luck!
Just okay. They tasted buttery but lacked some flavor, maybe add more sugar next time?
My dough didn’t double after 1 hour. I waited another 45 minutes and they finally puffed up. The finished rolls were worth the patience.
That happened to me too—usually my kitchen runs a bit cold. Waiting longer is totally fine. Glad they turned out worth it! 🥰
Hmm, if they didn’t double after an hour, maybe the yeast wasn’t active or the water/milk temp was off. Still, 45 extra mins and puffing is a good sign.
OMG these rolls taste amazing! Just like my grandma used to make. ❤️
Easy recipe, but my rolls were too dry. Should’ve added more butter maybe.
I always add more butter too! It makes them so much better and softer. Try it next time! 😊
Not sure if butter is the only problem. Maybe your oven temp was off? Just a thought.
Went perfect! I added a bit of garlic powder to the mix. Wow, flavor explosion! Highly recommend.
Too much sugar for my taste. I prefer savory bread. But I guess that’s just me.
These rolls are sooo good! Fluffy and buttery, just like I love them. My family devoured them in minutes!
Made this recipe for a potluck and they were the hit of the night! Thank you!
Not gonna lie, I was skeptical because it’s not super complicated, but the frothy yeast step actually matters. I used salted butter once (oops) and they were still good. Next time I’ll stick to unsalted.
Totally agree—people skip the frothy yeast step and then act shocked when it doesn’t rise 😅. Glad your salted-butter batch still worked though!
Why do you need warm water? I’ve always used cold and it was fine. This whole recipe seems too complicated.
Really good flavor, but my dough was a bit sticky even after kneading. Maybe my flour measurement was off. Still baked up nicely though.
Rolls…
5 stars but also… why 110°F? I don’t own a thermometer, I just do “warm to the touch.” Worked for me, but I’m skeptical it would for everyone.
First time making rolls and it was a disaster. They didn’t rise, what did I do wrong? 🤔
This recipe is horrible. My rolls turned out flat as pancakes. Not following this again.
I’m sorry to hear that! Maybe the yeast wasn’t frothy enough? I had that problem once too.
Not bad, but mine didn’t get as fluffy as the pictures. I think I might’ve added too much flour while kneading. Still tasty with the butter brush at the end.
These rolls were a hit at dinner! So fluffy and buttery. Will definitely make again!
But are they really that good? I find rolls can be hit or miss.
So glad you loved them! Fluffy is the key! 😊
Do i really need to wait an hour for it to rise? Ain’t nobody got time for that!
I love making these! They remind me of my grandma’s kitchen. So comforting.
Eh, just average rolls. I think store-bought taste the same honestly.
Maybe you just need to try a different recipe? These are pretty popular for a reason!
These turned out super soft and golden! The butter brushing at the end made the tops kind of addictive. Followed the rise times and it worked great.
I think 110°F is too hot for my kitchen—my yeast got kinda weird and the first rise was weak. Once I warmed the milk/water less, it was fine.
I was skeptical but these rolls are actually pretty easy to make. Will definitely bake again!
So glad you tried it! These rolls are to die for! I always have them with dinner now.
Good recipe, but I had to add a bit more flour—the dough felt too sticky at first. Once I adjusted, the rolls browned nicely. Not bad at all!
I didn’t have milk so I used water and it was okay. Not as good as my mom’s tho, haha!
Made these for dinner last night—so fluffy and buttery! The rise time actually matched my kitchen (about an hour + 30). I brushed a little extra butter on top and they disappeared fast.
These are dangerously good. The smell while baking is like straight up bakery vibes. I wish I had doubled the batch because 12 rolls is not enough for my household.
Totally agree—these smell like an actual bakery. I didn’t even get to share; we ate them straight from the pan 😅
OMG, these are the best thing ever! I could eat the whole tray myself! 😍
I totally agree! These rolls are amazing! I make them for every holiday meal! 😋
Are they really that good? I dunno, I’ve tried other recipes that weren’t great… Maybe I’ll give it a shot if I have time.
5/5. Wow.
I tried these and they came out decent, but my yeast didn’t get frothy after 5 min (could’ve been the water temp). Still tasted buttery though!
Right?! The butter brushing at the end makes them so soft and shiny. I’m obsessed 😄
Quick and easy dinner rolls, perfect for my family gatherings. Everyone loved them!!!
These rolls are the best! Made them last night, and my kids couldn’t get enough. Thanks for sharing the recipe!
1 hour rise + 30 min second rise was spot on for my kitchen. I brushed with butter right before baking and they browned beautifully. Will repeat.
So buttery! But I think you shouldn’t use this much butter all the time, it ain’t healthy.
I totally agree! Butter is delicious but moderation is key! These rolls look amazing though!
But you need butter to make them good! What’s a roll without butter? It’s fine to indulge sometimes!
Just made these and I’m not even kidding, the house smells amazing! Definitely gonna be a new family favorite.
Kinda messy when dividing the dough… but they look nice now! I’ll keep trying.
These rolls are amazing! So fluffy and buttery, they’re a hit at dinner.
Yum! Just yum! I didn’t have enough butter, but still turned out great! 👍
Made these tonight and they turned out super soft—like, pull-apart cloud vibes. Followed the timing and the buttery top was perfect.
These came out super soft and buttery—like dinner-roll perfection. I did have to watch the milk/ water temps because mine runs a bit hot, but once I got it right the rise was great. Definitely making again!
These came out super soft and golden! The butter brushing makes them taste like bakery rolls. I’ll definitely make these again for dinner.
Waaay too buttery… like almost cake-bread? My family liked it but I’m not sure it’s my thing. Maybe cut butter next time.
Made these last night—super soft and buttery. I proofed the yeast a little longer since my kitchen runs cold, but everything turned out great. 12 rolls fit my pan perfectly.
Yesss—mine always come out dense if I don’t give the yeast enough time, so I love that you adjusted for the cold kitchen. Sounds perfect with a 12-roll fit!
These rolls turned out amazing!! So buttery and fluffy, just like my grandma used to make. Thank you!
Mine stuck to the pan even though I greased it. Maybe I didn’t brush enough butter? The tops were gorgeous but I mangled a couple getting them out 😅
I followed this recipe exactly and mine didn’t rise at all. What did I do wrong???
Really, you guys put a whole cup of sugar in bread? Who needs that much sweet? Seems off.
Yay!
These rolls are the best! So fluffy and buttery, they disappeared in minutes. Will make again!
The ingredients are straightforward, but I think “4 cups flour” might depend on humidity. I had to add a little extra flour to get it elastic. Otherwise great flavor.
Totally agree—flour absorbs differently depending on humidity and even how it’s packed. I usually start with 3 3/4 cups and add from there.
I followed the recipe but my rolls didn’t rise at all. Maybe my yeast was old? So disappointed.
I used milk instead of water for the yeast and they turned out great! Who knew it could make a difference?
Using milk instead of water? That’s genius! I’ll have to try that next time. Thanks for sharing!
Honestly, I thought dinner rolls would be harder. Kneading made me tired but the instructions were clear. Next time I’ll shape them tighter so they rise more evenly.
I followed the recipe pretty closely, but my dough was a little sticky after kneading. I added a touch more flour and they still turned out good and soft. Would make again.
I tried these but they turned out hard like rocks. What did I do wrong? I followed the recipe.
