Butterscotch Banana Pie

January 27, 2025

Butterscotch banana pie is a luxurious and indulgent dessert that combines the creamy sweetness of bananas with the rich, buttery flavor of butterscotch. This pie is a perfect balance of smooth, caramel-like sweetness and the freshness of bananas, all nestled in a buttery graham cracker crust. Whether you’re preparing it for a family gathering, holiday celebration, or just a treat for yourself, this pie is sure to leave everyone asking for seconds.

To start, prepare your crust. A graham cracker crust is quick and easy to make—simply crush graham crackers and mix them with melted butter and a little sugar. Press the mixture into the base of a pie dish and bake it at 350°F (175°C) for about 10 minutes until golden brown. Allow the crust to cool completely before adding the filling.

For the filling, begin by making the butterscotch pudding. In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat, then add brown sugar, heavy cream, and a pinch of salt. Stir the mixture until the sugar has dissolved and the sauce thickens slightly. In a separate bowl, whisk together egg yolks, cornstarch, and vanilla extract. Slowly pour the hot butterscotch mixture into the egg mixture, whisking constantly to prevent curdling. Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook over low heat until it thickens to a pudding-like consistency.

Once the butterscotch pudding is ready, remove it from the heat and let it cool slightly before layering it into the cooled graham cracker crust. Slice fresh bananas and arrange them on top of the pudding, creating a fresh, fruity layer that complements the richness of the butterscotch.

Finally, top the pie with whipped cream. You can make your own by whipping heavy cream with a bit of powdered sugar and vanilla extract, or you can use store-bought whipped cream for convenience. Spread the whipped cream over the bananas and butterscotch layer, and finish by garnishing with additional sliced bananas or a drizzle of butterscotch sauce for a touch of extra sweetness.

Chill the pie in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours or overnight to allow the flavors to meld together and the filling to set properly. When ready to serve, slice the pie into generous wedges and enjoy the creamy, sweet, and indulgent flavors of butterscotch, banana, and whipped cream.

Butterscotch banana pie is a deliciously decadent dessert that brings together classic flavors in a fun and flavorful way. With its smooth butterscotch filling, fresh bananas, and airy whipped cream, this pie is the perfect treat for anyone with a sweet tooth.

Butterscotch and bananas?! Who thought of this? I like it but my husband thinks it’s too sweet. 🤷‍♀️

  3. 2 stars
I don’t know… My bananas turned brown too quick and it tasted weird. Maybe I did something wrong?

    1. 3 stars
I had the same problem! I think it’s the humidity that can make bananas brown fast. Try adding lemon juice to them before layering. 🤔

    2. 5 stars
Don’t worry! Bananas can turn brown quickly, especially if they’re not ripe enough. Just make sure to use really ripe bananas next time. It should taste great! 😊

  4. User avatar augustus.gusikowski1953 says:

Yum! Butterscotch is my favorite flavor! Making this again for sure! 🍌🥮

    1. User avatar kent.thiel says:

Sounds delicious! I’m glad you’re making it again. Butterscotch is indeed the best! 😍

  5. 4 stars
Simple and delicious! Even my kids enjoyed helping make it. Will definitely make again!

This sounds amazing! I’m planning to try it this weekend. Thanks for sharing your positive experience!

Not bad, but the texture was a little too sweet for my taste. Also my pudding seemed thicker than expected—maybe I used slightly less milk? Still, the layers looked great.

    1. 2 stars
Mine was super sweet too 😅 I used the instant pudding exactly like it says, but it still tasted like candy. I might try cutting the butterscotch mix in half next time or adding more banana. Did you use ripe bananas? Mine were kinda spotty.

    2. User avatar shayna.mccullough41 says:

      4 stars
Thanks for the feedback! I wonder if your butterscotch mix-to-milk ratio got a little off—using less milk can definitely make it set thicker. Next time, maybe measure the milk carefully and let it chill a full 2 hours (or longer) before judging the texture.

  7. 2 stars
I tried it, but it turned out runny. I think I messed up the pudding part. Any tips?

  8. User avatar londa.turner says:

Butterscotch and banana? What a weird combo. Not for me, but I guess some people like it.

  9. User avatar hazel.hessel2025 says:

I dunno, it seems too easy. Is it really that good or just a quick fix? 🤔

  11. User avatar wellRespected says:

    3 stars
Too many bananas!!! Can you even call it pie if it has this much fruit?

  12. 4 stars
Easy as pie (literally). I followed the pudding directions and it set nicely after chilling. Next time I might add a pinch of salt to the pudding just to make it pop.

  13. User avatar adalberto.gislason says:

    5 stars
This pie is absolutely divine! The combination of butterscotch and banana is perfection. My family devoured it!

  14. User avatar barb.ernser31 says:

    3 stars
My pie turned out a little runny even after 2 hours. I think my milk was too cold or I didn’t spread it right, but flavor was still good.

    1. 2 stars
Runny pie = you didn’t cook it or used the wrong milk lol. Instant pudding shouldn’t be runny if you follow the box exactly. Maybe your bananas were too wet? Or you put whipped cream on too soon?? But hey, if it tasted good, I guess it’s still a win.

    2. User avatar elna.waelchi49 says:

      4 stars
That sounds super familiar—instant pudding can still be a bit loose if the milk isn’t cold enough (or if the pudding mix wasn’t fully thickened before assembling). Next time, I’d chill the pudding in the bowl for 5–10 minutes after mixing, then layer it and refrigerate longer than 2 hours. Looks like you nailed the flavor though!

  15. 4 stars
Wow!!! Very easy and yummy pie! I recommend you try with strawberries too if u like!

  16. User avatar clair.fay1986 says:

    2 stars
I don’t get why people rave about butterscotch. It’s just too sweet for me. I only tried it because my friend wanted to make it.

  17. 5 stars
Honestly I was skeptical of using instant pudding mix, but wow. It came out smooth and creamy, and the banana layers stayed put. Great fridge dessert.

Butterscotch pudding? Isn’t that for old people? LOL. But I’ll give it a go for my grandma’s bday.

I followed it exactly and it was a hit at my family dinner. Everyone asked for the recipe. ⭐️

  21. User avatar ilene.thiel says:

It was okay, but I think I prefer chocolate over butterscotch. A bit too sweet for my taste.

  22. User avatar Gail Andrews says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, I thought the instant pudding would taste kinda artificial, but the butterscotch worked surprisingly well. I used extra banana because I’m extra.

    1. User avatar tissues_with_issues says:

      5 stars
That’s awesome—instant pudding can totally surprise you. The extra banana idea sounds like the way to do it.

  23. User avatar Mountain Minish says:

    2 stars
I had trouble with the pudding. It didn’t thicken up right and ended up a runny mess. 🙁

  24. 3 stars
This is just a banana and pudding in a crust. Not very original, but ok I guess.

    1. User avatar andre.mayer says:

      5 stars
I think it’s a classic combo! Sometimes simple is best. Can’t go wrong with banana and butterscotch!

  25. 5 stars
My family demolished it. The whipped cream made it feel fancy, even though it’s basically dump-and-layer. Will definitely make again for parties.

  26. User avatar latonya.ankunding29 says:

    5 stars
This was such a comforting, classic dessert. The butterscotch + banana combo is genuinely addictive, and the graham crust holds it all together. I used extra banana on top and it was perfect.

    2. User avatar anglea.torp says:

I don’t know, last time I made a pie it turned out a mushy mess. How can you trust those instant pudding mixes? 🤔

  29. User avatar ryan.kozey says:

    1 star
I thought I had all the ingredients, but forgot the crust! Can I use a cookie sheet instead? Idk.

  30. User avatar emogene.ullrich1958 says:

    4 stars
I just used regular bananas, and it came out sweet! Anyone tried it with chocolate pudding instead?

  31. User avatar brenton.labadie says:

My mom used to make a pie like this, but with caramel. This brought back memories! Thanks!

    1. User avatar tissues_with_issues says:

      5 stars
That sounds great! I love when recipes remind us of good times. Caramel pie sounds delicious too!

    2. 2 stars
Why would anyone put bananas in a pie? Sounds kinda weird to me. But hey, if it works for you!

  32. User avatar kathie.wilderman41 says:

    3 stars
Honestly, I think the bananas could’ve been more flavorful. It was just okay.

    1. User avatar Blade Brothers says:

      4 stars
I don’t know if I agree. I thought the bananas added a nice touch. Maybe yours just weren’t ripe enough?

  33. 3 stars
I thought the pie was just okay. The kids liked it, but I’m more of a chocolate person. Thanks for sharing, though.

    1. User avatar adena.cartwright says:

      4 stars
I get that! Butterscotch isn’t everyone’s favorite. You might love a chocolate pie instead! 🍫

  34. User avatar Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz says:

    2 stars
Honestly, I thought it would be better. The bananas got kinda mushy. Not my favorite.

  35. User avatar Isela Dietrich says:

    4 stars
The instructions are fine but that HTML tag in step 6 (the

) threw me off lol. Still, I loved the idea—will make again.

  36. User avatar winnifred.durgan says:

    4 stars
Whipped cream on top is a nice touch. I might fold the whipped cream into the pudding next time, just because I’m impatient.

  37. User avatar andrew.treutel28 says:

    2 stars
Not sure about this recipe. Are we supposed to bake it? I felt lost!

  38. User avatar renato.waelchi48 says:

    4 stars
I made something similar but with vanilla pudding. The butterscotch here is a nice upgrade—sweet without being too much. Only note: I added an extra banana layer because mine looked a bit sparse.

  39. 3 stars
Can’t believe it uses instant pudding mix. I’m skeptical it’ll taste “homemade,” but I’m willing to try.

  40. User avatar twyla.witting says:

    5 stars
This sounds dangerously easy. Butterscotch + ripe bananas is such a cozy combo—I’m definitely trying it with the pre-made crust.

  41. User avatar zackary.klocko97 says:

    1 star
pie taste good but why its called butterscotch if its just pudding? 🤔

    1. User avatar geoWizard says:

      5 stars
It’s delicious regardless of the name! Banana and butterscotch = yum! 🍌💖

    2. 4 stars
I guess it’s called butterscotch because that’s the flavor of the pudding! 🤷‍♀️

  42. User avatar Great Deku Tree says:

    5 stars
This pie is amazing! I made it for my family’s gathering and everyone loved it. Easy to make too!

  43. User avatar Sydney Stanton says:

    1 star
Pie is too mushy, like a banana soup. I expected more crunch from the crust.

  44. User avatar renate.robel2025 says:

    3 stars
Too many bananas! Next time I’m just gonna use like 1 or 2. Otherwise, not bad.

    1. User avatar Myles Hane II says:

      4 stars
I think the more bananas, the better! It adds a nice sweetness and flavor. But I get it, some people don’t want it too banana-y.

    2. User avatar rocky.marquardt says:

      3 stars
Nah, 3 bananas is just right! The bananas complement the butterscotch perfectly. But hey, to each their own!

  45. User avatar joe.wiegand2016 says:

    2 stars
Hmm… the instruction about adding bananas or graham crackers at the end is vague. Also my whipped cream started sliding after a few hours in the fridge. Flavor was okay, but I expected better texture.

    1. User avatar malcolm.stark20 says:

      3 stars
I totally get the vagueness—“add bananas or graham crackers” could mean a bunch of different things. I did extra banana slices on top and it still tasted fine, but yeah the texture could’ve been clearer.

    2. User avatar fiona.hettinger says:

      4 stars
Mine also slid a bit… I think it’s the whipped cream not being thick enough or the pie still being a little too warm. Next time I’ll whip it stiffer and maybe add the topping closer to serving.

  46. User avatar vance.feest1981 says:

    4 stars
I made something similar and it turned out great—though I’d add a pinch of salt to make the butterscotch pop. Still, solid recipe.

  47. User avatar earnestine.feest says:

    3 stars
I don’t like bananas, but my husband loved it. I guess it’s okay if you’re into that stuff.

  48. 5 stars
This pie was amazing! My family devoured it in minutes! Definitely a keeper!

  49. 5 stars
This pie was so easy to make! My kids loved it and it’s so yummy!

  50. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

    2 stars
Not gonna lie, this taste was mid for me. The bananas got kinda watery after refrigeration. Next time I’ll slice them right before assembling. 2 hours wasn’t enough either, I think.

  51. User avatar tissues_with_issues says:

    2 stars
Way too sweet for me. I might reduce the amount of pudding mix next time or use less milk so it’s thicker—right now it’s almost dessert overload.

  52. User avatar anonymous_hacker says:

    4 stars
Looks good! Can’t wait to try.

  53. User avatar ShanksOnePiece says:

    3 stars
I tried this and it was alright. But I think bananas went brown too fast on it. Maybe try something else?

    1. User avatar Draugr Thrall says:

      4 stars
I get what you’re saying! Brown bananas can ruin the look of a pie. Maybe try adding some lemon juice to the bananas to keep them fresh?

  54. User avatar teisha.cronin94 says:

    3 stars
It tasted alright but I think I messed up the pudding part, it was too runny. Does it need to be cooked or something?

    1. User avatar joie.cronin says:

      4 stars
Yeah, the pudding is supposed to be thick. Maybe you didn’t mix it long enough? It doesn’t need to be cooked, just stir it well.

  55. 3 stars
Umm, isn’t pudding made from scratch better than instant? Just saying…

  56. User avatar Thufir Hawat says:

    4 stars
Yum yum! Tastes just like my grandma used to make. Can’t wait to enjoy a slice after dinner tonight!

  57. User avatar nathanial.kshlerin34 says:

    2 stars
Honestly, way too sweet for me. I couldn’t even finish a slice!

  58. User avatar jeromy.stanton74 says:

    1 star
This recipe is a scam! You need more than 3 bananas, what are you thinking?

  59. User avatar edwardo.russel says:

    5 stars
This pie is amazing! I made it for my family, and they loved it. I didn’t even have to bake anything! So easy.

  60. User avatar buddy.bechtelar9 says:

    5 stars
This sounds dangerously easy. I love anything with instant pudding—banana + butterscotch is such a comforting combo. Gonna try it exactly as written (and leave it in the fridge longer than 2 hours just because).

    1. User avatar loretta.schoen69 says:

      5 stars
Right?? I’m always suspicious of “instant pudding” desserts but this combo sounds so cozy. Let us know how firm it gets after chilling longer.

    2. User avatar gustavo.hayes says:

      3 stars
Dangerously easy is my favorite kind 😂 but I worry it’ll be too sweet. Also do you mean cook the pudding or just mix it—my package says mix and cook? I’ll probably do exactly as written though.

  61. User avatar franklyn.thompson92 says:

    4 stars
Graham crust was a little soggy by day two, but day-of it was amazing. I’ll probably put the bananas closer to serving next time or add a thin barrier.

  62. User avatar Draugr Death Overlord says:

    5 stars
Delicious! Next time I might try it with chocolate pudding instead. 🤤

  63. User avatar sterling.balistreri says:

    5 stars
Yummy!! My grandma used to make something like this. Brings back memories. 🙂

    1. User avatar andrew.tremblay1987 says:

      5 stars
This sounds delicious! I wish I could taste it! My mom used to make something similar too! ❤️

  64. User avatar lauri.marquardt says:

    3 stars
It’s good, but I think it needs more structure. If you chill longer (like overnight) it’s better—2 hours wasn’t enough for me.

  65. User avatar angel.barton says:

    3 stars
Wait, 1 cup whipped cream for topping? That seems low—like, I think I used at least double last time 😅 Also, graham cracker crust pre-made is the only way I have patience for this.

  66. 3 stars
Wait so do you cook the pudding mix or just mix it? The instructions say “as per package,” but the wording here is confusing lol.

    1. User avatar Sean Heathcote III says:

      5 stars
You just mix it—use the cold milk with the instant pudding mix like the package says. Then you pour it into the crust and layer it with the bananas. 🙂

  67. User avatar shantay.robel says:

    5 stars
Woohoo! This dessert made my day. Totally worth the time spent in the fridge. Will be making this again soon!

    1. User avatar Wonko the Sane says:

      5 stars
I’m so glad to hear that! This pie is a favorite in our house too. Can’t wait to hear how it turns out next time! 😊

    2. User avatar glinda.ebert70 says:

      3 stars
Looks good but I don’t know about waiting for 2 hours… I might just eat the pudding right away! 🤷‍♂️

  68. User avatar oren.greenfelder says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about instant pudding in a pie, but it came out way better than expected. The butterscotch flavor is really nice.

  69. User avatar camila.harvey68 says:

    1 star
I don’t understand how people can eat this. Bananas and butterscotch? Sounds soooo weird!

  70. 4 stars
The instructions say “add banana slices or graham crackers,” but… those are not the same thing lol. I just topped with bananas and it looked better than my graham crumbs idea.

  71. User avatar michal.torp1958 says:

    3 stars
Not gonna lie… I’m skeptical about putting banana in it before it chills. Wouldn’t it turn brown or get kinda mushy? Still, might be good.

    1. User avatar kimbra.mccullough says:

      2 stars
I dunno… banana browns like instantly. Also isn’t butterscotch pudding mix usually thicker after you cook it? If it’s instant with cold milk it might stay kinda runny and make the banana mushy 😬

    2. User avatar Takisha Lehner V says:

      5 stars
I get the concern, but in pies like this the bananas usually stay pretty decent because they’re layered *and* the pudding is cold/set after chilling. Browning happens, though—so maybe toss the slices with a little lemon juice first?

  72. User avatar rosalva.schuster67 says:

    3 stars
Instant pudding in a pie crust feels kinda… lazy? But also lazy in a good way, lol. My worry is the crust getting soggy. Did anyone bake the crust at all or is pre-made fully fine?

    1. User avatar Brooks Treutel says:

      5 stars
I wouldn’t call it lazy—more like “smart timing.” 😄 The pre-made graham crust usually holds up fine since you’re refrigerating it (not baking). Sogginess is more of an issue if you soak it with warm liquids or don’t chill long enough. I’d follow the pudding package exactly, use cold milk, and refrigerate the full 2+ hours. If you want extra insurance, you can lightly pre-toast the crust for like 5–7 minutes at 350°F, then cool before assembling.

  73. User avatar Emily Saunders says:

    2 stars
The measurements are weirdly simple, like it’s missing instructions. “Top the pie with whipped cream” ok but how thick? And do you add more bananas on top or just graham crackers like the last line says? I’m confuzed.

  74. User avatar maurice.kuvalis35 says:

    5 stars
This pie is amazing! So simple and delicious. I can’t stop eating it!

  75. 3 stars
Banan pie??? Is this some kind of joke? I dunno about that.

  76. User avatar wellRespected says:

    3 stars
idk… seems kinda basic. butterscotch pudding + bananas is like boxed dessert vibes. Still, my kids ate it fast, so maybe I’m wrong 😅

  77. User avatar lily.barrows says:

    4 stars
I like the idea, but instant pudding can be hit or miss. If I make this, I’ll probably chill it longer than 2 hours so it sets up firmer.

  78. User avatar freddy.yundt1975 says:

    3 stars
Pretty good for an easy recipe, but I think I prefer chocolate pie. Just my taste, I guess.

  79. User avatar cecelia.konopelski says:

    5 stars
Made this for my family and it turned out super sweet and creamy—like banana pudding but fancier. The graham crust is the perfect crunchy base. 10/10 will repeat.

  80. User avatar reuben.rowe1964 says:

    3 stars
I really wanted to love this, but the pudding was too sweet for me. I might try it again with less sugar.

  81. User avatar byron.davis45 says:

    1 star
Banana pie is gross, this is just a dessert for kids. Who wants bananas in pie? No thanks!

    1. User avatar Sand-Dial says:

      2 stars
Honestly, I don’t get why people like bananas in pie either. It just sounds weird to me. But everybody has their taste, I guess.

    2. User avatar jamie.ratke says:

      5 stars
I think banana pie is amazing! The sweetness of bananas with butterscotch is just perfect. Kids or not, it’s delicious! You should give it a try!

  82. User avatar gerald.schulist71 says:

    4 stars
Yum! Butterscotch pudding is the best! I added a sprinkle of cinnamon on top and it was great.

  83. User avatar horace.stanton58 says:

    4 stars
I followed it pretty closely but my pudding got a little too thick to spread nicely, so I ended up warming the bowl for a few seconds. Still tasted great though, and the banana layers were really nice.

    1. User avatar jay.larson2026 says:

      5 stars
That’s exactly the kind of save-the-day tip that helps! Warming the bowl a few seconds makes total sense if the pudding set up too fast. I’m glad it still tasted great and the banana layers came through—sounds delicious.

  84. User avatar ALTplusF4 says:

    5 stars
Delicious! My kids helped assemble it and loved every bite.

    1. User avatar kyle.oreilly46 says:

The graham cracker crust is pre-made so it’s kinda cheating… in a good way. Way less effort than my usual baking disasters.

This sounds dangerously easy. I love instant pudding pies, and the banana layers should make it super creamy. Going to try it with extra ripe bananas for sure!

Right? “Dangerously easy” is exactly what I thought too 😅 But with ripe bananas it turns out really creamy—just chill it the full 2 hours so it sets.

Eh, it was okay. The butterscotch flavor is strong, but I wanted more banana taste. Maybe next time I’ll use more bananas or let them macerate a bit.

Easy and impressive. I made it for a family get-together and everyone asked for the recipe. The graham crust holds up well with the layers.

Pie turned out good, but I added chocolate chips for extra flavor. Yum! 🙂

One time I used the pudding mix and it turned into glue, but maybe I just mixed it wrong. If you follow the package exactly, it should be fine. Not bad!
