If you’re feeling extra indulgent, top the chicken with shredded cheese and bake it until melted and bubbly.

Ingredients
- 1 bag Lay’s BBQ potato chips family-size
- 1/2 cup butter
- 4-6 chicken breasts large, boneless
- 1 tablespoon Lawry’s seasoned salt
- 1 dry ranch salad dressing/dip mix
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400°F.
- In a 13×9″ baking dish, melt butter in the dish while prepping the chip mix.
- Crush the entire bag of BBQ potato chips (using a rolling pin works well).
- Add seasoned salt and dry ranch mix to the bag of crushed chips, then shake well to mix everything together.
- Wash each chicken breast under cold water, trimming any excess fat.
- Shake each chicken breast in the chip bag to coat, then lay it in the glass dish with melted butter.
- Repeat with each chicken breast.
- After coating all breasts, pour the leftover chips and seasoning from the bag over the top of the chicken, spreading it out to cover.
- Bake for 40 minutes.
- Remove from the oven and scrape the burnt chips on top to the side.
- Serve the chicken breasts. The chicken will be juicy, and the leftover chips, burnt or not, can be mixed with mashed potatoes for added flavor.

This turned out AMAZING! The chicken was so juicy, and the chips added great flavor! Will definitely make again. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I’m glad it turned out so well for you! I love the idea of using BBQ chips. I might try this recipe with some sweet potato chips for a twist.
I dunno, sounds kinda strange to put chips on chicken. Wouldn’t they just get soggy? But if it works for you, cool, I guess.
I dunno… baking chicken with chips sounds weird. But I guess it works? 🤷♂️
Seems a bit odd to me, fried chicken with chips? Never heard of that! I don’t know if it’ll taste good, but I guess everyone has their own style. 🤔
I was skeptical too at first, but trust me, this dish is a game changer! The chips add a nice crunch and flavor. Give it a shot! 😋
I didn’t have ranch dressing, so I just used Italian. It was okay, but not what I expected.
I think using Italian dressing might not give that tangy flavor ranch does. But it’s cool you tried something different! 🍽️
Honestly, ranch is kinda essential for this dish! Italian dressing just ain’t the same. 😕
Good recipe! Just cook it a bit less if you don’t want burnt stuff on top.
Just made this for my family and they loved it! So tasty and a hit at dinner!
My wife made this once. I wasn’t too convinced at first but I loved it! Never thought BBQ chips could do that. ⭐⭐⭐⭐
5 star for easy, no star for health. Chips, really? But tasty!
My kids loved it! They said it was like fast food but better. Thanks!
BBQ chicken yum!
I dunno about the burnt chips part… sounds kinda weird. Is it really good?
This sounds delicious! Can’t wait to try it! BBQ chicken is always a hit.
I dunno, the idea of using potato chips is weird. I tried it, but it came out kinda soggy for me. Maybe I did somethin wrong?
Soggy chips sound gross! I would not try that. Chips don’t go in chicken. Just use breadcrumbs instead, much better. 🤔
I get what you mean! The chips can get a bit soggy if they’re not crisped before baking. Maybe try baking them a bit first? I love using chips in recipes though, adds a nice crunch! 🍗
I added some cheese on top before baking, and it was delightful! More cheesy recipes please! 😋
Cheese on top sounds amazing! I’ll definitely try that next time. 🍗🧀
Yum!! 🤤 I add some cheese on top during the last 10 minutes! So good!
This was sooo good! The chicken was juicy and the chips gave it a nice crunch. 5 stars!
I’m skeptical about the chips on chicken. Sounds a bit strange…but I might try it!
Chips on chicken? Nah, that don’t sound right. I don’t think I’d trust it. I prefer my chicken without snacks. 😕
I thought the same thing at first! But trust me, it’s actually super tasty! The chips add a nice crunch. Give it a shot! 😊
Honestly, who cooks with chips? Sounds like a cop out to me. I prefer real seasoning.
Real seasoning? Pfft. Chips are like magic dust for chicken! I definitely need to try this.
I think using chips is kinda genius! Who has time to measure out all those spices? Plus, Lay’s are so tasty.
Yikes, burnt chips? No thanks. I don’t wanna eat ash. I think I’ll skip this.
I was skeptical about using chips but WOW! It actually tasted really good. My kids loved it! ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Love this recipe! The chicken came out sooo juicy and the BBQ chips on top were genius!
So glad you liked it! The BBQ chips do add a fun twist. I’ll have to try that with other dishes too!
Juicy chicken? Are you sure? That seems too easy. I bet I’d burn my house down if I tried that. 🤔
Is there another way without butter? I can’t use it. Not sure about the flavor either.
Had to substitute the BBQ chips ’cause I only had plain ones. Still turned out decent. Not great, but decent.
Plain chips ain’t the same, but I bet it was still good! Maybe add some spices next time?
Decent? If it was still edible, that’s a win! Just gotta get the right chips next time.
My kids can’t stop eating this! I used BBQ lays and it’s all gone in one dinner!
My chicken burnt, what did I do wrong? Followed directions! 😩
This sounds so good! I love BBQ chips. Can’t wait to try it out!
Wut? Using chips? You sure that’s food? LOL.
This recipe is so easy and delicious! My kids loved it.
I’m glad your kids loved it! It’s such a fun way to get them to eat chicken. My family enjoyed it too!
Easy? Really? I don’t know, burning chips sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. I think I’ll stick to my usual recipes.
I don’t think using potato chips is a good idea… Sounds weird to me.
I don’t know about using chips for chicken, that seems weird. How can that be healthy?
This is the best chicken recipe I’ve tried! The flavors are amazing, and it’s super easy to make! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Easy peasy and tasty! Just watch out for the burnt chips on top, they are yucky.
I totally agree about the burnt chips! They ruin the whole dish for me. Maybe I’ll try baking it for less time next time.
So simple yet so good! I just winged it and added some extra spices. Yum!
Yum! My kids loved it! No leftovers, which is saying a lot. 😋
So glad to hear that! It’s a hit with my kids too! 🤗
I made this for dinner and it was bomb! The ranch mix really kicks it up a notch! 🍗👍
Can’t really get behind putting ranch on meat. Seems off. Anyone else feel that?
I think ranch is okay, it’s just not everyone’s cup of tea! Maybe it’s meant to be delicious? Who knows?
I totally get you! Ranch on meat just feels wrong. Can’t imagine how that would taste. 🧐
Very simple and fast! Great for a weeknight dinner! 4 stars from me.
Not bad, but I think the chips burned a bit too much for my liking. Maybe lower the temp next time? ⭐⭐⭐
Real talk, this is too easy to be good. Are you sure it’s safe? I dunno about this one. ⭐⭐⭐
I tried it and it was delish! Don’t be scared, just give it a go! 🌟
Isn’t this just a glorified chicken nugget? Whatever works for you, I guess.
Easy recipe! I added some cheese on top before baking. That’s a game changer, trust me!
Not sure about the burnt chips part… That seems weird to me. Are they really good mixed with mash?
I’ve tried it and the burnt chips actually add a nice crunch! Trust me, it’s worth it with the mash.😉
I think that’s just not right. Burnt chips? Why would you want that in your food? Sounds weird.
I don’t know about using chips for chicken. Seems kinda strange to me. Not sure I will try it.
Can’t wait to try this! Wondering if I can use ruffles instead… lol
Ruffles could work, but they might not stick as well. I say go for it if you want a little crunch!
Totally gross. This is not good food. Don’t try this.
I thought it was really tasty! Everyone has different tastes, I guess.
I added some garlic powder, makes it even better! The burnt bits aren’t that bad either.
Uhm, I’m not sure about the burnt bits being good. Isn’t that just carbon? I just stick to the basics. Garlic powder seems extra though…
Garlic powder?! That sounds awesome! I can only imagine how much more flavor that adds. Also, burnt bits can actually be the best part if you ask me! Looks like a great recipe!
This is like junk food for dinner… Really? Chips on chicken? Not for me.
I totally get where you’re coming from! Chips on chicken do sound weird. But sometimes junk food is just fun, you know? 😄
I don’t know about using chips for chicken. Sounds weird 🤔. Is it really good?
Eh, I don’t like ranch. I swapped it out for nacho cheese seasoning instead, and it didnt work well… ⭐
This is super easy to make! I made it for my family and they all loved it. Will definitely do again!
I’m not a fan of BBQ chips, will other flavors work?
This is super easy and delicious! Kids loved it. Will make again for sure.
This was super easy and my kids loved it! Definitely a keeper.
I’m so glad to hear that! It’s such an easy recipe and kids love those BBQ chips. Makes dinner a breeze!
Wait, you bake it? I thought the chips were for snacking! Sounds kinda weird, but if the kids liked it, maybe I’ll give it a shot.
It be good, real good. I eat it all!
Seriously? BBQ chips on chicken? That’s some lazy cooking! But I tried it and it’s not bad. 🤷♂️
Ehhh, chicken and chips? Not my thing. But my husband ate it all.
Yum! I made it for my BBQ and everyone loved it. Thanks for sharing!
Followed the recipe to the T but my chicken ended up dry. What did I do wrong?
Simple and satisfying! My hubby said it’s a keeper. Will make again!
I dunno about using chips for chicken. Seems weird. But I guess it worked for some!
This was sooo good! The chip coating gave it the best flavor! Will make again!
Yum! Best chicken I’ve made! The ranch and BBQ are a perfect mix! What a combo! 👍 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Sounds delicious! I have to try this soon. Thanks for sharing the recipe!
Easy and quick dinner. I swapped out ranch for Italian seasoning and it was good. 🤷♂️
Sounds like a good twist! I might try that next time, thanks for sharing. 😊
It was okay, but the burnt chips were kinda gross. Maybe I should watch the time more closely next time.
Just poured some BBQ sauce on instead of chips, and it still worked! Who needs chips anyway?
This recipe is trash. Chicken should not be covered in chips. Why ruin it?
Y’all, my kids loved this! Even the picky eater cleaned their plate! 👏
That’s awesome! Kids can be tough, so this must be a winner! 🍗💖
Super easy and quick! Perfect for weeknight dinners! Going to make it again this week! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
yummy!!! Chicken tastes great with BBQ chips, who knew? 😋
BBQ chips and chicken? Sounds weird but maybe it’s good? 🤔 I’ll stick to regular chips.
I never thought of using BBQ chips! Gonna try this. Thanks for sharing! 😍
Lol why would u bake chips? Ain’t that gonna just burn? Not sure if I understand this recipe. ⭐
Baking chips can actually work! They get crunchy, not burnt if you watch ’em. Trust me, it’s delish, give it a try! ⭐⭐⭐⭐
I don’t know man, this sounds weird. Chicken and chips? Can’t get behind that. Might just stick to frying. ⭐
This was not good… my chicken got all soggy from the butter and chips. Didn’t come out like I thought.
I totally get it! Mine turned out soggy too. I think maybe less butter next time? At least I know now! 😅
What kind of ranch dressing mix is this? I used a different one and it didn’t taste right. 😩
I think the ranch mix matters a lot! I used Hidden Valley and it was sooo good! Maybe try that next time!
This is what I call a calorie bonanza! But soooo tasty! 😋
Made this for my kids and they loved it! Just a warning, the chips can get a bit too crunchy. Might try it with some veggies next time! ⭐⭐⭐⭐
This recipe is amazing! Quick and easy, perfect for a busy weeknight.
Followed the recipe step by step and it was a disaster. Chicken was burnt and chips were soggy. 😩
How can you put chips in the oven? Ain’t they gonna just turn to dust? lol
Honestly, I forgot to buy ranch dressing mix. Can I just use like, ranch dressing from the bottle instead? Will it work?
I don’t think BBQ chips belong on chicken. Seems kinda lazy to me…
Yum! The butter made the chicken really juicy. Definitely making this again.
I tried it too! The butter made a big difference. I used a little less butter, though. Just can’t handle too much fat.
I don’t know… BBQ chips on chicken? Seems weird to me. Maybe I’ll try with just the ranch mix.
Burnt chips? Seriously? This is a cooking fail! I’ll stick to regular recipes.
I tried this but didn’t have BBQ chips, used plain instead. Still yum! Just not BBQ flavor.
I tried this with Pringles, didn’t turn out well. Stick to Lay’s I guess?
So easy to make! I added some cheese on top and it was delicious!
Wait, can we just eat the chips instead of making the chicken? 😅
This is the best chicken recipe ever! My kids loved it.
I tried this recipe last night and my whole family went crazy for it! Just like you said, super tasty!
I don’t get why some people think this recipe is good. It’s just crushed chips on chicken? Really?
Why would you put potato chips on chicken? That’s just weird. Never tried it and not planning to.
I thought the same at first, but it’s actually really good! The chips give it a nice crunch. You should give it a shot!
Not the best. The chips got too burnt and the flavor was way too salty for my taste. 3 stars only.
I totally get what you mean about the chips getting burnt. Maybe try lowering the temp next time? I thought it tasted great though!
Okay, but like… can you really call it BBQ if it’s just chips on chicken? Seems like a gimmick to me. But hey, if it works for you.
Yum! I added some cheese on top before baking, made it even better!
Super easy and tasty! My husband said it was “finger-lickin’ good” haha!
Yummy! Made it for a party and everyone ate it all up! 🍗
This was a hit with the kids! They loved the BBQ flavor.
Chicken was good, but the chips got burnt like crazy! Next time I won’t bake them as long.
Yeah, I had the same issue! They burned like crazy for me too. Maybe they should bake for less time or at a lower temp. Glad the chicken turned out good though!
This was so tasty! My kids loved it, I will definitely make it again!
I was a bit skeptical about using chips, but wow! It turned out better than I expected. So easy too!
This was a hit at our barbecue! The flavors were amazing and the chicken was super juicy. Definitely making this again!
Glad to hear it was a hit! That BBQ flavor sounds delish. I’m gonna try it out this weekend!
Too much butter for me. I like healthy recipes, this one not so much.
I’m not sure about using potato chips. Sounds weird.
I thought the same thing at first! But it actually adds a nice crunch and flavor to the chicken. Just give it a try!
Not sure if I trust this recipe, chips on meat doesn’t sound right. But I guess some people like it.
I was skeptical at first too, but trust me, it tastes amazing! The chips give a great crunch. Give it a shot!
This sounds dangerously good. I love coating chicken in crushed chips—easy and crunchy. 40 minutes at 400°F feels just right, and the ranch/BBQ combo is a classic.
Totally agree—chips as the coating is such a good shortcut. I’m definitely trying the ranch + BBQ combo, and 400°F for 40 min sounds spot-on for juicy chicken.
Not sure about the “scrape the burnt chips” part… like, I get wanting it crunchy but burnt feels like it could taste bitter. Maybe I’d cover with foil for the first 25 min? Still sounds pretty tasty though.
Way too salty for my taste with the Lawry’s seasoned salt + ranch mix. I’d cut the seasoned salt in half next time. Other than that, decent idea.
Yeah, I agree—Lawry’s can overpower fast. I usually do 1/2 tbsp at most with ranch mix and it’s way better.
If I make this I’m not using that much butter. Like half a cup is a lot. Maybe do less and add a little oil so the chips stick? Otherwise it’ll be greasy.
I get what you mean about the butter. Half a cup sounds like a lot for a crumb coating. I bet you could cut it down and still get good flavor—just make sure the chicken is fully coated.
Maybe try 1/4 cup butter + a small drizzle of oil? The chips need something to cling to, but you don’t want the crust sliding off or turning greasy.
Not sure about the 1/2 cup butter… seems like a lot. Mine came out greasy at the bottom even though the top was tasty. Would reduce butter or drain excess next time.
Yeah, 1/2 cup butter felt like a lot to me too. I’d use closer to 1/4 cup and make sure the baking dish isn’t too crowded—grease pooling at the bottom is real.
Idk yall, chicken tasted salty to me. I’m guessing because I used extra seasoned salt. Also baking 40 min for all sizes seems risky—mine were thick so needed longer.
Yooo. Potato chip chicken is legit. Add ranch, and im sold. 5 stars.
Honestly thought it’d be soggy but it wasn’t. I used regular ranch mix (not dry dip) and it still worked. Next time I’ll crush the chips a bit finer for better coating.
I used regular butter and it was fine, but it got messy in the 13×9. Still, the flavor is great. Would recommend lining the dish with foil for easier cleanup.
Totally agree on lining with foil—cleanup is brutal otherwise 😅 The butter + chip crumbs definitely gets messy in a 13×9.
This feels kinda like a shortcut recipe, but in a good way. The only issue is step 10—my “burnt chips” turned into basically smoke. I’d say watch it near the end.
I tried something similar with potato chips but never thought to add dry ranch mix too. I’m curious how salty it gets with Lawry’s + ranch powder, but I bet it slaps.
Made this tonight—so crunchy and flavorful. The BBQ-ranch combo is legit. I did 5–10 minutes less because my oven runs hot, but overall perfect.
Yesss! Crunch factor is everything. I love that BBQ-ranch combo—so good on chicken.
I was skeptical about baking chicken in potato chips, but it actually turned out crispy on top. Followed it pretty much exactly. Next time I’ll probably bake 5-10 minutes longer for thicker crunch.
I’m still skeptical lol. Potato chips are so salty—won’t the chicken be way too salty with the seasoned salt + ranch mix? Maybe use less? But glad yours worked!
This is one of those “wait…what?” recipes that actually slaps 😂 Crispy crust for real. I’ve never tried the BBQ Lay’s though—now I’m curious. 5–10 min longer for thicker crunch makes total sense.
Confusing step 6 says wash and then shake in the chip bag—mine wouldn’t stick because I hadn’t dried the chicken enough. I think patting dry first helps.
Ohhh that makes sense. If the chicken is still wet, the chip coating won’t grip at all. Patting dry first (paper towels) usually fixes it—good catch on step 6.
The amounts are weird to me. Like 4-6 chicken breasts but only 1 dry ranch mix and 1 bag chips—what if you use 6? Mine needed more seasoning.
Made this tonight—so good. The ranch + BBQ chip combo is insanely flavorful and the chicken stays juicy. I used extra ranch mix like the instructions kinda imply and it slapped.
Honestly this tastes like BBQ ranch in chicken form lol. My kids devoured it. I served it with mashed potatoes and mixed in the leftover chips like the recipe says.
Not gonna lie, “scrape the burnt chips” makes me nervous lol. I don’t want charred bits in my dinner, maybe just bake 5-10 min less and watch it.
Totally get that—char can turn bitter fast. “Scrape burnt chips” sounds like a step I’d skip and just bake a bit less next time.
I don’t know if I trust it—Lay’s chips feel gimmicky. But I tried it anyway and… wow. The crust isn’t just salty, it’s crunchy too.
Not gonna lie, I’m skeptical about using chips as “crust,” but your result sounds legit. Crunchy + juicy is the dream.
Crispyyyy
Flavor is legit, but my “scrape the burnt chips” step turned into “search and rescue char.” Still tasty though. Maybe keep an eye on it at 35 min.
😂 “Search and rescue char” is exactly what that step sounds like. I usually do 30–35 min and check early—oven temps vary so much.
Wait you’re supposed to wash the chicken under cold water? I heard that’s not recommended. Also, the instructions are messy with the HTML tags—still, the flavor idea is solid.
Wait… wash it? My grandma always said you do NOT wash chicken or it spreads germs everywhere (and I believe her 😅). Still, Lay’s + ranch + seasoned salt is a genius combo. Instructions could use cleaning up though.
Yeah, I’m with you—washing chicken is one of those things everyone argues about. I usually just pat it dry instead of rinsing. Also the HTML tags are super distracting, but the BBQ ranch chip crust sounds awesome.
