Sweet Potato Casserole with Pecans

November 12, 2024

Sweet potato casserole is a comforting and flavorful dish that’s often seen on holiday tables, particularly during Thanksgiving and Christmas. With its rich, sweet flavor and velvety texture, it’s the perfect balance of savory and sweet, making it an irresistible side dish for any festive meal.

The base of sweet potato casserole starts with mashed sweet potatoes, which are naturally sweet and packed with nutrients. The potatoes are cooked until tender, then mashed and mixed with butter, brown sugar, vanilla, and a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg to enhance their natural flavor. A little cream or milk is added to make the mixture creamy and smooth, giving the casserole a luscious texture.

What makes sweet potato casserole truly special, however, is its topping. A classic version often includes a crunchy, sweet topping made from a combination of brown sugar, butter, and either chopped pecans or marshmallows. The crunchy pecans add a lovely nutty flavor and texture, while the marshmallows, when baked, become golden and gooey, adding sweetness and a bit of chewiness.

The casserole is baked until bubbly and golden on top, allowing the flavors to meld together and creating a delightful contrast between the creamy sweet potato filling and the crispy, sugary topping. This dish is a great way to showcase the natural sweetness of sweet potatoes while adding depth with the warm spices and the rich, buttery finish.

These casserole pairs wonderfully with roasted meats like turkey, ham, or pork, as well as other classic holiday side dishes like stuffing, green beans, or mashed potatoes. It also works well as a hearty side for family dinners or casual gatherings.

For drinks, a glass of sparkling cider, a light white wine like Sauvignon Blanc, or a slightly sweet dessert wine can balance the richness of the casserole.

Sweet potato casserole is a timeless and beloved dish that brings warmth and sweetness to any meal, offering both comfort and indulgence in every bite.

I get where you’re coming from, but sweet potatoes add a natural sweetness that balances out the sugar. You might wanna give it a try!

Tried it for Thanksgiving, and it was a hit! But I think it could use more spices like cinnamon.

    1. 4 stars
Glad to hear it was a hit! I agree on the spices; a little cinnamon could really elevate the flavor. Maybe even some nutmeg?

    2. 2 stars
Thanksgiving for this? Seems kinda basic. Sweet potatoes are sweet enough, don’t need more sugar, for real.

  31. User avatar rolland.stoltenberg says:

Marshmallows?! That sounds interesting! I never thought of that, but I’m willing to try it now. Sounds like you had a great Thanksgiving!

  40. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

    3 stars
I followed the recipe exactly and mine was a little dry at the edges. Maybe my sweet potatoes were too thick when mashed—next time I’ll add a splash more milk.

  41. User avatar fidel.tremblay1977 says:

    5 stars
Yum! 😍 My whole family loved it! Definitely making it again!

  42. User avatar mae.koch2011 says:

    2 stars
Meh. I’ve had better sweet potato casseroles that are more spiced. Where’s the cinnamon??

    1. User avatar hung.heller1952 says:

      5 stars
Yeah I get you—this one’s more “sweet” than “spiced.” The cinnamon isn’t listed at all, so if you want that cozy flavor, adding 1–2 tsp cinnamon to the sweet potato mix (or into the streusel) would fix it.

  43. 5 stars
This is one of my favorite recipes! My family loves it. Just the right amount of sweetness. 😊

  44. User avatar micah.koch says:

    5 stars
This casserole is amazing! I love sweet potatoes and this recipe made them taste even better.

I disagree! I thought it was delicious! You might have missed the spices or something?

  47. User avatar Frost Atronach says:

    2. User avatar rich.landlord says:

  50. User avatar marylyn.gislason says:

    2 stars
I made this and it was ok, but I don’t get the hype around sweet potatoes, honestly.

I used to think the same! But after trying this recipe, I totally get it. Sweet potatoes are so versatile and can be sweet or savory!

  51. User avatar davis.gislason says:

Not gonna lie, 1/2 cup sugar + 1/2 cup brown sugar sounds like a lot. It still tastes good though—just very dessert-y.

  52. User avatar santina.oconnell says:

    3 stars
This seems simple but when i made it, it was too mushy, not sure if I done it right.

  53. 3 stars
Can I use canned sweet potatoes instead? Not sure if that’d ruin it.

  54. 5 stars
Tasty! My whole family ate it without complaints! Even my picky eater! 🥳

  55. User avatar linwood.goyette says:

    4 stars

I love sweet potatoes, but I just can’t wrap my head around the idea of mixing them with sugar. Isn’t that a bit too sweet?

    1. User avatar blair.stanton says:

      5 stars
Nah, it’s not too sweet! You gotta try it, it’s like a dessert. Sweet potatos and sugar is a great combo! Trust me!

    2. 4 stars
I understand your concern! Sweet potatoes are already sweet, but the sugar really enhances the flavor in this recipe. It’s about balance! You might be surprised how good it tastes! 😊

  63. User avatar maurita.sanford13 says:

    2 stars
I dont like sweet potatos, but my family loved it! I guess you have to like em to enjoy this.

  66. User avatar laverne.lang1952 says:

    5 stars
I made it for Thanksgiving and it disappeared fast. The streusel actually stayed crisp, which is rare for casseroles.

  67. User avatar alaina.adams says:

    3 stars
My topping kinda clumped instead of sprinkling nicely—maybe I didn’t measure the flour right. Still tasted good, just looked less fancy.

  68. User avatar florida.kub51 says:

    5 stars
YUM! This recipe is just like my grandma made! Tastes like childhood but better, if you can believe it!

Not bad, but I think it was too sweet. Maybe less sugar next time. Just a suggestion!
