Stained Glass Gelatin Cake

December 12, 2024

Stained Glass Gelatin Cake is a show-stopping dessert that’s as fun to make as it is to eat. With vibrant layers of colorful gelatin embedded in a creamy base, it’s like a work of art on your plate. This whimsical cake is perfect for celebrations, potlucks, or when you want to add a bit of flair to your dessert table.

The beauty of Stained Glass Gelatin Cake lies in the colorful gelatin pieces that create a stained-glass effect. The gelatin is prepared in multiple colors, usually red, green, yellow, and blue, and set into individual layers in a baking dish. Once the gelatin has firmed up, it’s cut into cubes and suspended within a creamy, fluffy filling that gives the cake its signature smooth texture.

To make this dessert, you’ll start by preparing the gelatin layers. Choose your favorite gelatin flavors and dissolve them in boiling water. Pour each flavor into separate containers and refrigerate them until they are fully set. After the gelatin has firmed, cut it into small cubes, keeping the colors separated. The more vibrant the colors, the more stunning the final effect will be.

The next step is creating the creamy base. Typically, the filling is made from a combination of sweetened condensed milk, whipped cream, and gelatin to help it set. The creamy mixture is poured over the colorful gelatin cubes in a baking dish, allowing the colorful pieces to be evenly distributed throughout. Once the base has set, the result is a beautiful, colorful dessert that looks as though it could be a stained-glass window.

This cake is as much a visual treat as it is a delicious one. Each bite offers a refreshing, fruity burst from the gelatin and a creamy richness from the filling, making for a perfect balance of textures. It’s a dessert that’s sure to be a conversation starter, and its vibrant colors make it an eye-catching addition to any table.

Stained Glass Gelatin Cake is not only a delicious dessert, but it’s also a fun and creative way to impress your guests with your baking skills. Whether you’re making it for a holiday, a birthday, or just because, this cake is a delightful treat that’s guaranteed to bring a smile to anyone who sees it.

What is Stained Glass Gelatin Cake?

It’s a colorful, eye-catching dessert made with cubes of brightly flavored gelatin suspended in a creamy, milky base. The mosaic-like appearance gives it the name “stained glass” or “broken glass” gelatin cake.

Is it hard to make Stained Glass Gelatin Cake?

Not at all! It just takes a bit of patience. First, make several flavors/colors of gelatin, let them set, cut into cubes, and mix them into a sweet gelatin and condensed milk mixture. Pour into a mold and chill until set again.

What does it taste like?

It’s light, fruity, and creamy! The different gelatin flavors add fun bursts of fruitiness, while the creamy base keeps it smooth and balanced.

Any tips for clean slices?

Use a sharp knife dipped in hot water and wiped clean between cuts to get neat, glass-like edges.

So easy to make! I didn’t have all the flavors but used what I had and it still turned out great.

I tried it but my cubes started to melt into the creamy layer. Maybe my gelatin wasn’t firm enough or I mixed too vigorously. Still tasted good though—just not as pretty.

I think this recipe is wrong. Shouldn’t you add sugar somewhere?!

    1. 5 stars
I think it tastes great as it is! The sweetened condensed milk adds plenty of sweetness already. No need for extra sugar.

    2. User avatar antonetta.hayes says:

      3 stars
I dunno. I mean sugar is usually in desserts, right? Just feels odd to me without more sugar. 🤔

  6. User avatar darnell.casper says:

    4 stars
Can you make it without the condensed milk? I’m lactose intolerant. 😩

Easy to make! Just remember to cut the gelatin into small cubes. It can be a little messy but totally worth it!

I made it last weekend and it turned out great! It’s super pretty too!

  8. 2 stars
It looks pretty but was a pain to do. Took me forever to cut those jellies. Not sure it was worth it.

Looks nice but is it really gonna taste good? I don’t know about mixing all those flavors…

  10. User avatar annette.fisher17 says:

    2 stars
Is it really necessary to wait for so long? Seems like a lot of waiting for just some jelly.

  11. User avatar kina.kub24 says:

Tastes good but too many steps for me. Simple is better!

I don’t know… Seems like a lot of work for just gelatin. Not sure if I’ll try it.

Not gonna lie, gelatin dessert is kind of my weakness. The cutting and stacking was kinda stressful, but once it set overnight it sliced way cleaner. Solid party idea.

    1. 5 stars
Yes!! This is exactly the kind of party dessert I love—pretty but not crazy once you follow the steps. The overnight set making it slice cleaner is so true.

    2. 3 stars
I tried something similar but my gelatin cubes just turned into mush 😅 I think I didn’t chill long enough. Also, “cut into cubes” feels harder than it sounds—do you mean really small cubes? Still sounds tasty though.

ugh, this is so boring 😒. Jello is jello. Not worth it.

  18. 5 stars
This looks so fun—like actual stained glass for dessert. I love how the cubes stay distinct instead of turning into one blob. Definitely trying this for a party.

  19. 5 stars
I made this for my kids’ birthday and they loved it! A hit for sure!

Super easy to make! My kids loved it! Only thing is my gelatin didn’t set right… maybe I added too much water.

    1. User avatar blair.deckow says:

      4 stars
Glad your kids enjoyed it! Maybe try less water next time? That might help the gelatin set better.

I made this last week, but I forgot to put it in the fridge! It was a puddle. Total disaster.

Looks good but isn’t it just jello with milk? Seems kinda basic…

  26. User avatar mana.weissnat14 says:

I made this but it was too sweet for me. Maybe less condensed milk next time?

  27. User avatar keith.mills6 says:

I tried making it but it didn’t set right. Can anyone help? What did I do wrong?

  28. User avatar Cristobal Predovic says:

IDK why, but this recipe ruined my dinner plans. The gelatins didn’t set right. 😩

  29. User avatar sheryl.jenkins1985 says:

What’s with the unflavored gelatin? Isn’t that just a waste? 🤔

    1. User avatar zane.turner says:

      2 stars
But like, why not just use more flavored gelatin? Unflavored seems kinda pointless. 🤷‍♀️

    2. User avatar bret.bahringer70 says:

      5 stars
I think the unflavored gelatin is important for the texture! It helps give the cake that creamy base. It’s not a waste, it’s part of the magic! 🪄

  30. User avatar vern.torphy80 says:

Wow, this reminds me of when I was a kid! My mom used to make something like this, but we called it sparkle cake. Love it! 👍

    1. 5 stars
This is such a sweet memory! My grandma made something similar too, though she never used condensed milk. Gonna give this a try! 🥳

    2. 2 stars
Sparkle cake? Never heard of that. Seems a bit strange to me to mix all those jell-o flavors. Hope it tastes better than it sounds! 🤔
