Spaghetti and Meatballs

August 6, 2024

A classic Italian-American dish consisting of spaghetti and savory meatballs in a rich marinara sauce.

Spaghetti and meatballs is one of those timeless meals that always hits the spot. Whether you are cooking for a family dinner, preparing something special for a loved one, or simply craving a hearty dish after a long day, this combination delivers every single time. It is warm, familiar, and packed with rich flavor that never goes out of style.

The charm of this dish lies in its simple ingredients and how perfectly they work together. The spaghetti provides the perfect base, soft and satisfying. The tomato sauce brings depth and warmth, often simmered with garlic, onions, and herbs to enhance the flavor. And the meatballs, tender on the inside and lightly crisp on the outside, add that savory richness that ties it all together.

There is something universally comforting about a bowl of spaghetti and meatballs. It feels like home. It invites you to slow down, take your time, and enjoy each bite. It is also one of those meals that is great for sharing, whether you are gathered around the table with friends or feeding a hungry family.

Another reason this dish stands out is how easy it is to make your own. You can use ground beef, pork, turkey, or a mix of meats for the meatballs. You can stick to a traditional tomato sauce or add your own twist with spices, veggies, or a splash of red wine. You can even make it vegetarian if you prefer. The options are endless, and no matter how you make it, the result is always comforting and satisfying.

Spaghetti and meatballs is more than just a meal. It is tradition, comfort, and connection served on a plate.

Ugh, I thought it would be easier. Why do you have to cook the meatballs first before the sauce? Seems like a waste of time! 🙄

My kids loved it! But I used turkey instead of beef and it still worked out fine. 10/10!

    1. 5 stars
That’s awesome! Turkey is a great substitute. I’ll have to try it that way! 😄

Hmm, I don’t know about turkey being as good as beef… but if the kids liked it, then that’s what matters! 🤷‍♂️

I try to eat healthy so I used turkey instead of beef. Not the same though.

But like, isn’t beef the whole point of meatballs? Turkey just ain’t the same. Just my opinion…

Turkey is a great alternative! You can pack it with more spices to get that beef flavor. I say good choice!

  4. 4 stars
Easy and delicious, but I substituted ground turkey instead of beef. Still good! 🙂

  5. User avatar Devon Graham I says:

Not bad! I think 1 pound ground beef is a little small for 2 cups marinara, so I ended up adding extra sauce. Flavor was still solid though.

This is like the best spaghetti ever! I can’t believe I made it myself!

Meatballs browned fast but I had to add a splash of water to keep the sauce from getting too thick. Still really tasty.

This is how my grandma made ’em but she always added a pinch of sugar. Might try that next time! 😉

Spaghetti and meatballs is just okay, honestly. I prefer penne.

    1. User avatar tissues_with_issues says:

      4 stars
Penne is great, but you gotta give spaghetti another shot! The sauce clings to it so well!

  13. 2 stars
Meatballs were bland. Not enough flavor. I had to pour extra sauce on them!

  14. User avatar cory.lockman36 says:

Way too salty for my taste, had to add more sauce to balance. Might try it again.

  15. 4 stars
Easy and solid instructions. I used pre-seasoned breadcrumbs and it might’ve been slightly saltier than expected, but still tasty. For spaghetti, I always save some pasta water—helped the sauce coat.

Do I really need the milk? I’m not sure it makes a diff.

    1. 5 stars
You should keep the milk! It helps make the meatballs juicier. Don’t skip it!

Simple and straight to the point, nice! But I felt it needed more garlic.

    1. User avatar Duncan Idaho says:

I thought it was fine as it is, but I guess garlic lovers gotta have their way. 🤷‍♂️

    2. User avatar tissues_with_issues says:

More garlic is always better! I usually add 4-5 cloves. Makes it so much tastier!

I found this recipe too dry. My meatballs fell apart while frying. Maybe I needed more milk?

    1. User avatar cedrick.jakubowski84 says:

      4 stars
I think adding more milk could help! Sometimes the meat needs more moisture, especially when frying. Don’t give up, practice makes perfect!

Yummy! 😍 My kids loved it. Easy to follow recipe!

    1. 2 stars
Yea, but I think it’s a bit too basic, like, anyone can make spaghetti and meatballs. It’s not that special…

So glad to hear that! Kids can be picky eaters, but meatballs and spaghetti are a classic! 😊

Just spaghetti and meatballs? It’s Italian food, like pizza too maybe!

  23. 3 stars
Ok but where’s the secret ingredient? Feels like it’s missing something…

    1. User avatar Miles Teg says:

      3 stars
I dunno, it sounds good as it is. Secret ingredient? Just add love! 😂

    2. 4 stars
Maybe try adding some red pepper flakes for a kick? That could be the secret touch you’re looking for!

  24. User avatar paris.kertzmann63 says:

The sauce was too spicy for my taste. Maybe I should’ve used a different brand.

I followed the recipe but my meatballs turned out too dry. Any tips?

  26. User avatar reda.champlin74 says:

Super easy! I cut some corners and used jarred sauce. Still came out pretty good. Thx for the recipe!

  27. 2 stars
Meatballs tastes yum but spaghetti was all mushy. I followed recipe!! 😩

    1. User avatar melvina.dibbert97 says:

      4 stars
Maybe try cooking the spaghetti for less time next time? It can get mushy if overcooked! 😅

  28. User avatar ian.ratke1997 says:

This is not real Italian food. You need a lot more herbs! 1 star.

  29. User avatar rich.landlord says:

These meatballs came out super tender and flavorful. The garlic and parmesan combo is spot on, and the simmer time really did the trick. I used homemade marinara and it tasted restaurant-level.

  30. User avatar horacio.funk1973 says:

The ingredient list is on point, but I think 1/2 cup breadcrumbs is a bit much for 1 lb beef unless your meat is very lean. Mine were slightly dense.

    1. User avatar Palmer Feeney says:

      3 stars
Hmm maybe your meatballs were just packed too tight? I use 1/2 cup every time with 80/20 and they come out tender, not dense—maybe cook a little less and simmer longer?

    2. User avatar kiara.nienow says:

      4 stars
I’ve made these a few times and agree with you—if the beef isn’t really lean, 1/2 cup breadcrumbs can make them feel heavy. I usually do closer to 1/4 cup and add a splash more milk if the mix is too dry.
