Sloppy Joes

October 24, 2024

Sloppy Joes are the ultimate comfort food, offering a perfect blend of savory, tangy, and slightly sweet flavors all in one messy, satisfying bite. This classic American dish consists of seasoned ground beef (or turkey) simmered in a rich, tomato-based sauce, piled onto soft hamburger buns. The result is a hearty, flavorful meal that’s as delicious as it is fun to eat.

What makes Sloppy Joes so appealing is their perfect balance of textures and flavors. The meat mixture is both juicy and thick, with the sauce adding depth and complexity. The sweetness comes from ingredients like brown sugar or ketchup, while the tanginess is often balanced with mustard or vinegar. A bit of Worcestershire sauce adds umami, making each bite even more satisfying.

These sandwiches are incredibly easy to prepare, making them a go-to dish for busy weeknights, picnics, or casual gatherings. The ingredients come together quickly on the stovetop, and you can customize the flavor profile to suit your tastes. If you prefer a spicier version, feel free to add chili flakes, hot sauce, or even some diced jalapeños for an extra kick. Some recipes even call for bell peppers or onions, adding a touch of crunch and sweetness.

While ground beef is the traditional choice for Sloppy Joes, you can easily swap in ground turkey, chicken, or even plant-based meat for a lighter or vegetarian version. The versatility of this dish also allows for creative twists, such as adding shredded cheese, pickles, or a fried egg on top for an even more indulgent experience.

Sloppy Joes are perfect for serving at casual family dinners or gatherings. The combination of tender, flavorful meat and a soft bun is universally loved, and these sandwiches are easy to eat with your hands, making them ideal for both kids and adults. For a complete meal, serve them with sides like potato chips, fries, or a simple salad.

In the end, Sloppy Joes are all about enjoying hearty, comforting food that’s both easy to make and full of flavor. They’re a timeless favorite that never fails to bring smiles to the table.

Shouldn’t there be chili powder in Sloppy Joes? This seems wrong.

Ground beef? But I thought Sloppy Joes were made with chicken!? 🤔

  14. 4 stars
My onion didn’t really soften—maybe my skillet heat was wrong? I ended up cooking it longer and then it was fine. Sauce was still really good.

I added some chili powder and it was a game changer! 🔥🔥🔥

  17. User avatar man.doyle1998 says:

Pretty good, but I think it needed a splash more ketchup or a pinch more salt. Also my onions took longer than expected, so I kept them going until truly soft.

  18. 2 stars
Why does this take so long to cook? I just want to eat! Quick recipes are better.

I made this recipe but used turkey instead of beef. Still turned out tasty! 😊

  27. 3 stars
I made it and it was good, but mine came out a little too sweet (maybe I measured the brown sugar wrong). Would reduce sugar to 1 tbsp next time.

    2. 3 stars
It’s alright, but I think it needs more spices. Maybe some garlic or chili powder?

  29. 2 stars
I think they were too sweet. Who puts brown sugar in Sloppy Joes? Seems odd.

  30. User avatar Eddie Bayer says:

    1 star
Too much ketchup, maybe. I like tangy but this was like a ketchup explosion.

  31. User avatar anabel.hauck98 says:

Quick and simple! I made it with turkey instead of beef and it worked fine!

  36. 3 stars
Can I use any kind of buns? I have some hotdog buns left.

  37. 4 stars
Pretty good! I did 10 minutes simmering instead of 20 and it still tasted fine. Next time I might add a dash of garlic powder though.

  38. User avatar Galaxia Woonbeam says:

    3 stars
Really good but we forgot the sugar… what a mistake! Will try again the right way!

  39. 5 stars
Followed it pretty much exactly, except I added a splash of apple cider vinegar (don’t judge). Still tasted great and not too sweet.

    1. User avatar Emilee Koelpin says:

      3 stars
I don’t know about vinegar with ketchup… but if it wasn’t too sweet then maybe it worked. Next time I’ll try just a tiny splash.

    2. User avatar maybell.luettgen1967 says:

      5 stars
Apple cider vinegar?! Don’t judge at all—honestly that sounds like it would cut the sweetness from the brown sugar a bit. Glad you liked it!

  40. 4 stars
I’m not a fan of ground beef, so I used turkey instead. Still turned out great!

    1. User avatar magda.sauer says:

      2 stars
Turkey? Really? I dunno if that would taste the same. Isn’t beef the whole point of sloppy joes?

    2. User avatar newton.sawayn says:

      4 stars
Using turkey instead of beef sounds like a healthier option! I might give it a try too. Thanks for the tip!

These came out like the classic diner sloppy joes—sweet, tangy, and not overly salty. The 15–20 minutes simmer was key. Definitely making again.

    1. User avatar lemuel.batz59 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—this has that diner vibe. The ketchup + brown sugar combo is magic, and the 15–20 simmer really makes it taste like it’s been cooking all day.

  82. 2 stars
I don’t see why so many people love these. The mixed flavors were just too weird for me.

  83. 2 stars
Really?? Brown sugar in sloppy joes? I always used honey. Not sure about this..

I followed it pretty closely, but I added a tiny splash of vinegar at the end. That little tweak made it pop. Next time I’ll probably double the onions.

  90. User avatar Harry Armand Bach says:

    5 stars
Turned out super tasty and way less complicated than I expected. The simmer really helps the sauce come together—my kids went back for seconds.

    1. User avatar rich.landlord says:

      5 stars
Yes! The simmer is the secret—makes it taste way more “real” than instant sloppy joe stuff. My fam was also doing seconds 😄

  91. User avatar abel.keeling says:

    1 star
Why would you put sugar in sloppy joes? That’s just wrong! I am not trying this. 😒

    1. User avatar Sand-Dial says:

      4 stars
I think the sugar balances out the acidity of the ketchup. It’s a classic combo! Give it a chance!

    2. User avatar colby.kuhn says:

      2 stars
Sugar? Seriously? That’s just messed up. Sloppy joes shouldn’t be sweet!

Huh? This was too sweet. Is brown sugar really needed? Gimme regular beef…

  94. User avatar ArabianNights says:

    3 stars
I used ground turkey instead of beef and it came out kinda dry. Still edible though, just needed more sauce.

  95. User avatar lenora.schultz2022 says:

    5 stars
Yum! I added a pinch of garlic powder and it was amazing! Will make again.

  96. 3 stars
I accidentally used yellow mustard (still mustard though) and it was kinda weird at first, but after simmering it mellowed out. Tasted okay in the end.

  97. User avatar Bennie Daniel says:

    4 stars
The Worcestershire sauce is the key. I didn’t have mustard so I used a bit of yellow mustard powder—still decent, but fresh mustard probably tastes better.

    1. User avatar tonisha.zulauf47 says:

      3 stars
Idk… mustard powder seems kinda weak though. I’d rather just skip it than use powder. Still, sloppy joes forgive a lot, I guess.

    2. User avatar Magrathean sperm whale says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—Worcestershire sauce makes it taste “real.” I always add a little extra if I’m feeling brave. 😄

  98. User avatar salvador.vonrueden15 says:

Sloppy Joes are too gross! Why is there so much ketchup?

    1. User avatar renate.stroman13 says:

      5 stars
I love Sloppy Joes! The ketchup gives it that sweet and tangy kick. Everyone has different tastes, I guess!

    2. User avatar pat.stiedemann says:

      3 stars
But like, the ketchup is what makes it sloppy, right? You can always use less ketchup if you want?

  99. User avatar kimber.trantow says:

    2 stars
I don’t get the brown sugar part. It seems weird to me, why add sugar to meat?

  100. User avatar raleigh.collier1982 says:

  103. User avatar mariko.thompson78 says:

    2 stars
I followed the recipe exactly and it turned out bland. 1/2 teaspoon salt seems low, and the brown sugar made it sweet without adding much depth. Would not make again.

  104. 5 stars
These are the best Sloppy Joes I’ve ever made! Sooo delicious! 🙌

Sloppy joes are a mess, literally. But delicious. Who cares if it’s messy?? 4/5!

  110. User avatar Emily Saunders says:

Isn’t Sloppy Joes just a mess on bun? I prefer my food neat. lol

Sloppy Joes are the best! I added some pickles and it was even better! Yum!

    1. 5 stars
I totally agree! Pickles really bring it to another level. Can’t wait to try this recipe with them! 😋

  112. User avatar MAGA2024.Trumpster says:

Just okay. I think my mom’s recipe is better. Who needs brown sugar in these?

    1. User avatar samuel.waelchi says:

      4 stars
Brown sugar adds sweetness to balance the flavors! Your mom’s recipe must be really special, but give this a try, it might surprise you!

  113. 5 stars
These Sloppy Joes are amazing! My kids loved them!

  114. User avatar albert.veum says:

    3 stars
Not sure about the amount of brown sugar. It came out sweeter than I expected, but my kids loved it, so… maybe I’ll cut it in half for adults.

  115. User avatar liberal.hero says:

    3 stars
Not sure about the Worcestershire + mustard combo. Tastes a little “off” to me, like it’s trying to be something else besides classic sloppy joes. I might cut the mustard in half next time.

    1. User avatar Galaxia Woonbeam says:

      4 stars
Nah, that combo is what makes it “grown up” sloppy joe 😄 The Worcestershire brings depth and the mustard just balances. If it tastes off to you, maybe your mustard is stronger (or expired). Try 1/2 tsp instead of 1 tsp.

    2. User avatar minda.glover says:

      4 stars
Totally get what you mean. Worcestershire + mustard can go a little tangy/odd if the amounts are heavy. Cutting the mustard in half sounds like a perfect tweak—next time I’d also taste as you simmer.

  116. User avatar thomas.oconnell says:

I made these for the game night, they went soooo fast! Delicious!

  117. User avatar gerardo.schumm says:

I love that! Mustard does add a nice kick. What’s your secret ingredient?

    2. User avatar Cathleen Halvorson Sr. says:

I don’t get it, what’s the big deal? Sloppy Joes are just messy burgers.

  118. 5 stars
Wow, I put mine on toast instead of buns. Game changer!

  119. User avatar rich.landlord says:

    2 stars
Um, are we sure this is healthy? It’s like a heart attack on a bun! 😬

  120. User avatar Santana Walsh says:

    5 stars
This is the best Sloppy Joe recipe I’ve tried! My kids loved it!

  121. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

    2 stars
I dunno, seems too basic. Can’t you add some spice or something?

  122. User avatar darius.jacobi says:

Sloppy Joes? Ugh. The name is gross. But they tasted alright, I guess.

    1. User avatar Garlic Jr says:

      4 stars
I get what you’re saying. The name is kinda off-putting, but sometimes it’s the taste that counts. Glad you liked them somewhat!

  123. 5 stars
This was a hit at my family dinner! So easy and delicious. Everyone loved it! 😍

  124. User avatar shala.wehner29 says:

    4 stars
Easy peasy! A hit with my friends on movie night. Plus, super filling!

  125. 4 stars
Sloppy Jo’s great! My grandma made it different though. Her meats were more seasoned.

    1. User avatar edgar.satterfield says:

      2 stars
But is it really Sloppy Joes if it’s not like this?? Sounds weird!

    2. User avatar virgilio.paucek7 says:

      4 stars
I hear ya! My mom always added extra garlic. Makes such a difference!

  126. 5 stars
These are the best sloppy joes ever! So much flavor! Will make again!

  127. 4 stars
I accidentally simmered it for like 45 minutes because I forgot, and it got super thick—kinda like a spread. My family loved it anyway.

  128. User avatar tama.schmeler says:

    5 stars
Wow, this recipe is a hit! My kids devoured it in minutes. Definitely making it again!

  129. User avatar caleb.conn20 says:

This recipe is fire! The kids loved it. Will make again.

  130. User avatar ArabianNights says:

Ground beef was good, but 15–20 min simmer is too short for me. I simmered longer and the flavors blended way better.

  131. User avatar kellie.cartwright says:

    4 stars
My husband said these taste just like school lunch! Brings back memories!

  132. User avatar Prostetnic Vogon Kwaltz says:

    2 stars
Eh. Worcestershire sauce feels like overkill. I omitted it and it tasted flat to me—won’t do that again.

  133. User avatar delpha.davis15 says:

    3 stars
Good and easy, but I found it a little bland with only 1/2 tsp salt. Next time I’ll go heavier on salt and pepper.

    1. User avatar julio.von97 says:

      4 stars
I agree—mine was a bit mild too. I ended up bumping salt closer to 3/4 tsp and it totally woke it up. Pepper helps a lot!

    2. User avatar nigel.gulgowski says:

      4 stars
Maybe your ketchup was sweeter? I noticed if I use regular ketchup (not low sugar) I need less brown sugar. Still, try seasoning gradually—don’t overdo it.

  134. 3 stars
Not bad, but I’m skeptical of only ketchup + sugar. Feels a little basic. I’d rather add garlic and maybe some celery, you know?

  135. User avatar antonio.greenholt2001 says:

    3 stars
Bun soaked real fast, but flavor was good 😅 Next time I’ll do toasted buns for sure. Weirdly good for such few ingredients.

    1. User avatar Hotblack Desiato's bodyguard says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—those buns can get soggy fast. Toasting them is such a game changer. 😄 Glad the flavor still came out good with minimal ingredients!

  136. User avatar Yael Armstrong says:

    1 star
Hate to be that person—sloppy joes should be more ‘spicy’ and less sweet. Maybe cut the brown sugar in half?

  137. User avatar basementDweller says:

    5 stars
This recipe is a classic! I used my grandma’s secret mustard and they were even better. Yum!

  138. User avatar mohamed.bednar says:

These are the best Sloppy Joes ever! My whole family loved them. Will definitely make again!

    1. User avatar delpha.littel20 says:

I tried this recipe too and it was amazing! So easy to make and the taste is just perfect. 🥳

  139. User avatar janetta.langworth says:

    2 stars
Not gonna lie, I didn’t measure the spices right and it ended up kinda bland. Also my onions stayed crunchy because I rushed step 2. Recipe’s fine though!

  140. 5 stars
Made this for dinner last night and it was a total comfort-food win. The 15–20 minute simmer really thickened it up nicely.

    1. User avatar weston.stroman36 says:

      3 stars
I tried this and it was alright, but mine didn’t thicken much. I simmered closer to 10 minutes… maybe my ketchup was thinner? Still tasted good though.

    2. 5 stars
Yes!! That 15–20 minute simmer is the magic. I did the same and it got so thick and messy-in-a-good-way 😄

  141. 4 stars
Honestly, pretty solid. I used a little extra onion and it turned out great, but mine was slightly too sweet at first—next time I’ll cut the brown sugar down by like a tablespoon.

  142. User avatar mirian.larson says:

    3 stars
Pretty good, but mine was a little too thick. Next time I’ll loosen it with a bit of water or broth while simmering. Still delicious on the buns.

  143. User avatar nestor.blanda1983 says:

    5 stars
Five stars—so easy and way better than fast-food sloppy joes. Also the buns held up better than I thought.

  144. User avatar terminatorXYZ says:

    3 stars
I don’t know, I feel like it needs something. Maybe some garlic or celery? Just feels flat.

  145. User avatar mervin.hermann says:

    5 stars
Yum! Perfect for a quick weeknight meal. Used turkey instead of beef and turned out great!

  146. 2 stars
Not for me. I was hoping for more spice or something. Just ketchup and beef.

    1. User avatar jessika.crooks says:

      4 stars
I get what you mean! I added some hot sauce to mine, made it way better. 😊

    2. User avatar earl.conn57 says:

      5 stars
This is how it should be! Not everything needs to be spicy. 👍

  147. 5 stars
Made this for family night and it was gone fast—sweet and tangy, and the onion really helps. I’ll definitely cook a bigger batch next time.

  148. User avatar charles.fritsch2 says:

    4 stars
I followed it mostly, but my sauce was a little too thick—added a splash of water and fixed it. Overall solid comfort food.

    1. User avatar Majin Vegeta says:

      5 stars
Glad it worked out! I’ve had that happen too—usually the ketchup thickens as it simmers. A splash of water or even a little broth does the trick. 😄

    2. User avatar abbie.abernathy83 says:

      3 stars
“Mostly”?? 😅 I don’t know… if the sauce got too thick wouldn’t it mean you cooked it too long or used too little liquid? Also 1 cup ketchup seems like a lot. Still, buns are undefeated.

  149. User avatar dewitt.morissette97 says:

    2 stars
Eh… I didn’t love the texture. I think I cooked the beef a bit too hot and it got crumbly. Flavor was okay though.

    1. User avatar Feral Falmer says:

      4 stars
Sorry that happened! If the beef got crumbly, you might be browning it a little too hot—try medium instead of medium-high, and as soon as it’s cooked through, start the simmer. The 15–20 min on low should keep it more saucy.

    2. User avatar martin.swift says:

      3 stars
Hmm yeah I’ve had that texture when I rush the beef. Next time maybe add the sauce as soon as the onion’s soft and don’t keep cooking once it’s done? Also did you stir the whole time on low?

  150. User avatar horacio.mayert says:

    5 stars
Made this for dinner tonight and it was a total hit. The sauce tastes like classic sloppy joes, sweet + tangy in the best way. I let it simmer a full 20 minutes and the flavor got way deeper.

    1. User avatar catrina.heathcote0 says:

      3 stars
I tried this and it was decent, but mine turned out a lil too sweet. Next time I’ll cut the brown sugar in half and see.

    2. User avatar charlyn.bode37 says:

      5 stars
Yesss—“classic sloppy joes” is exactly the vibe. I also simmer longer when I can; it really does deepen the flavor.

  151. User avatar fatimah.bednar says:

    3 stars
I think the recipe is missing something… like maybe a splash of vinegar or garlic? It tasted kinda flat until I added a pinch of smoked paprika. Still, easy and quick to make.

  152. User avatar calvin.botsford91 says:

    5 stars
Made this tonight and it was super comforting. The 15–20 minute simmer really thickened up the sauce and the flavor was spot on—my kids asked for seconds.

  153. User avatar ahmed.dicki1994 says:

    4 stars
Who knew so simple could be so good? Quick dinner, cheap too, I’m in!

  154. User avatar Dr. Herminia Bechtelar says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, I’m skeptical about Worcestershire in a sloppy joe. Ended up working though! The aroma while simmering was unreal. My buns got a little soggy, so I’d toast them next time.

  155. User avatar jamar.cassin says:

    4 stars
Just made this, but I swapped ketchup for BBQ sauce and it was divine! Highly recommended.

  156. User avatar Sabre Cat says:

    2 stars
Did I miss something? This was kinda bland. Can’t taste the beef at all.

  157. User avatar rosio.bechtelar14 says:

    4 stars
The instructions are simple but 15-20 minutes wasn’t enough for me. I simmered closer to 30 and it thickened nicely. Also, I accidentally used regular sugar once and it wasn’t the same.

    1. User avatar marry.runolfsdottir83 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—15-20 min can be a bit optimistic. If you let it go closer to 30 it definitely thickens up better. Also yeah, I’ve done the same thing with regular sugar and it tastes… off. Brown sugar really changes the vibe.

  158. User avatar mitchell.hills says:

    4 stars
This tastes exactly like the sloppy joes from my elementary school cafeteria (in a good way). Nostalgia!

    1. 3 stars
Really? Mine always comes out kinda sweet, like I did something wrong. Do you use lean beef or does it need fat? Might try it again.

    2. User avatar Prostetnic Vogon Kwaltz says:

      5 stars
Haha yes! That cafeteria sloppy joe vibe is the BEST—cheers to nostalgia 😄

  159. User avatar errol.crona says:

This tastes like Sloppy Joes from a box. I mean, it’s not bad, just not like the ones I remember from my aunt.
