Russian Dressing

October 6, 2025

Creamy, tangy, and just the right amount of zesty, Russian dressing is a classic condiment that transforms simple dishes into something special. Beloved for its bold flavor and versatility, this sauce is far more than just a salad dressing. It’s a key component of iconic sandwiches like the Reuben, where its creamy texture and sharp bite perfectly complement corned beef, Swiss cheese, and sauerkraut. At its core, Russian dressing blends mayonnaise and ketchup or chili sauce, creating a smooth, rosy base that’s both rich and slightly sweet. What sets it apart, though, is the punch of flavor from horseradish, Worcestershire sauce, and a splash of vinegar, which add depth and a gentle heat that lingers on the palate.

Many versions also include finely chopped pickles, onions, or pimentos, adding a pleasant texture and a burst of brightness to the creamy base. This balance of creamy, sweet, tangy, and spicy is what makes Russian dressing so irresistible and versatile. It works beautifully as a salad dressing, pairing especially well with crisp greens, hard-boiled eggs, and hearty vegetables like tomatoes or bell peppers.

Beyond salads, it shines as a condiment for sandwiches, wraps, and burgers, where its bold flavor can elevate even the simplest ingredients. It’s also a fantastic dipping sauce for fries, roasted potatoes, or fried seafood, adding a creamy, tangy counterpoint to crunchy bites.

Despite its name, Russian dressing is an American creation, believed to have originated in the early 20th century. Its name likely comes from the use of caviar in some early versions, though most modern recipes skip that luxury. Today, it remains a beloved staple of classic American cuisine, cherished for its ability to add richness and character to any dish. Whether you drizzle it over a salad, spread it on a sandwich, or use it as a dip, Russian dressing brings a burst of flavor that’s comforting, nostalgic, and endlessly delicious.

I don’t get why anyone would put ketchup in their dressing. Not for me.

  8. 3 stars
Sounds good but what is horseradish? Can I replace it with something?

Isn’t this just fancy ketchup? Where’s the real flavor? 🤷‍♂️

      5 stars
I never thought of adding garlic! That’s a great twist. Gonna try it next time!

Can you use any mayo? Or does it have to be the brand you said? Asking for a friend. 🙂

  13. 1 star
Not a fan, to be honest. Too tangy for my liking.

    1. User avatar bell.hoppe1952 says:

      2 stars
Too tangy? What? That’s the whole point of Russian dressing! You’re missing out.

    2. 4 stars
I totally get that! It’s definitely not for everyone. Maybe try it with less ketchup next time?

  14. 4 stars
Awesome recipe! I add a bit more horseradish for a kick. Love it on my sandwiches!

  15. User avatar audie.bahringer28 says:

    4 stars
I was skeptical about the horseradish, but it really works! Surprisingly good. Who knew? 😂

  16. User avatar sol.miller8 says:

    3 stars
Too much mayo for my taste. I think I’ll try less next time.

    1. User avatar marcela.conroy says:

      4 stars
I love mayo, but you’re right—maybe it’s a bit too much for some! Next time, try using yogurt instead for a lighter version.

    2. 2 stars
Mayo is the best! I can’t imagine this without it. Don’t listen to them!

  17. User avatar leopoldo.jacobi1958 says:

    3 stars
Is it really necessary to refrigerate it? I’m impatient and want to eat it NOW!

  18. User avatar anonymous_hacker says:

    4 stars
Simple ingredients, not too fussy. I let it chill the full 30 minutes and it tasted way better than right away.

    1. User avatar chin.hudson39 says:

      5 stars
Yes! Chilling makes it taste so much more blended. I’m glad it worked for you too.

Easy recipe, but I don’t see how it’s ‘Russian.’ I thought it was just dressing but whatever.

    1. User avatar marina.schneider64 says:

      4 stars
I get what you’re saying. It might not taste very Russian, but it’s called that anyways. Maybe it’s just a name? 🤷‍♂️

  20. 4 stars
Just made this dressing and now I can’t stop eating it with everything! Yum!

  21. User avatar Corrupted Shade says:

    2 stars
I tried making this but it didn’t taste like the store-bought kind. I think I messed up somewhere.

  22. User avatar aileen.muller55 says:

    5 stars
This is the best! I used it on my sandwiches, and it was yummyyy. ❤️

  23. 4 stars
For a homemade dressing, it’s pretty good! Just what I needed for my salad.

  24. 4 stars
I didn’t have Worcestershire, but still made it. It was fine but probably would taste better with it.

  25. User avatar william.leffler1985 says:

    4 stars
Super easy! I added a dash of garlic powder and it was even better. Thanks for sharing!

    1. User avatar estella.boyer24 says:

      5 stars
I love that idea! Garlic powder is always a great addition. Glad you enjoyed it!

  26. 3 stars
Eh, it was okay. Didn’t really have much flavor, maybe next time I’ll try more horseradish?

  27. User avatar deeann.bradtke says:

    4 stars
2 cups of mayo?? No way that’s healthy! I replaced with yogurt and it’s still good!

    1. User avatar kathlyn.brown says:

      3 stars
2 cups sounds ridiculous! This is not some kind of mayo challenge, lol. I’ve never heard of using yogurt instead. Is it really that good? 🤔

    2. 5 stars
I think mayo is essential for the creaminess! Yogurt’s a good swap if you’re health conscious, but it won’t taste the same. 5 stars for authenticity!

  28. 3 stars
I followed it exactly, but mine came out a bit too tangy—maybe because my sour cream was low-fat? Still good though.

    1. 5 stars
Good catch—low-fat sour cream can definitely taste more “tangy” and thinner, so it won’t mellow the ketchup as much. Next time try full-fat or add a tiny extra mayo to balance it.

    2. User avatar luanne.walsh73 says:

      3 stars
Hmm I don’t know. I’ve made it with low-fat sour cream and it was fine. Maybe your ketchup brand was stronger? Or you used extra horseradish? Tangy for me usually means I didn’t chill it long enough.

  29. User avatar Biff Wellington says:

    5 stars
I’m no cook, but this was super easy to make! Even my kids loved it.

  30. User avatar tyler.cronin70 says:

    2 stars
Isn’t Russian dressing just thousand island? 🤔 I think they’re basically the same!

  31. User avatar rayford.gleichner says:

    3 stars
Maybe next time, use less mayo? It’s a bit too creamy for me.

    1. 4 stars
I understand what you mean about the mayo! I’ve tried it with less and it still tastes great.

    2. User avatar ahmed.berge1977 says:

      2 stars
Less mayo? Naaah, that’s the best part! 😋 But you do you!

  32. 5 stars
This is a great dressing! 👍 I’ve made it twice already for my picnics.

  33. User avatar fritz.dickinson72 says:

    2 stars
I don’t know about this recipe. Russian dressing doesn’t have ketchup does it? Guess I’m skeptical.

  34. 5 stars
Absolutely delish! I used it for my salad and it was perfect.

  35. 5 stars
I made this yesterday and it turned out great! My family loved it. 👍

  36. 5 stars
This dressing is sooo delicious! Perfect on salads and sandwiches. Will make again!

    1. User avatar Hasimir Fenring says:

      5 stars
I’m glad you loved it! It’s a classic for a reason, isn’t it?

    2. User avatar basementDweller says:

      3 stars
I don’t know… I think it’s too tangy for my taste. May try it tho.

  37. User avatar anonymous_hacker says:

    5 stars
I made this for a party and everyone loved it! Will definitely make again.

  38. User avatar basementDweller says:

    4 stars
Mine came out a bit too thick—maybe my mayo was super thick? I added a spoon of milk and it loosened up. Flavor was good after that.

  39. User avatar micah.mckenzie says:

    2 stars
Not bad, but mine turned out more pink than I expected. Also I didn’t have horseradish so I used wasabi—don’t do that unless you like pain lol.

  40. User avatar jame.borer98 says:

    5 stars
I followed it pretty closely, but I added a bit more paprika and it was delicious. Easy weeknight sauce for burgers and fries. Will make again.

  41. User avatar dario.beier says:

    1 star
Sounds fancy but really just mayo and ketchup lol. Not sure if I’d call it Russian.

  42. User avatar Grandpa Gohan says:

    2 stars
Not a fan of the ketchup in this dressing. Too sweet for my taste.

    1. User avatar kelley.greenholt says:

      2 stars
Ketchup is da key! Without it, it’s just mayo, lol. But I guess everyone has their own taste. 🤷‍♂️

    2. 4 stars
I totally get what you mean! The sweetness can really overpower the other flavors. Maybe I’ll try reducing the ketchup next time.

  43. User avatar Blue Dartwing says:

    3 stars
Too much paprika! I think the recipe needs less or maybe none at all. It was overpowering for me.

  44. User avatar jeanmarie.mosciski says:

    2 stars
Meh, I think I messed it up. Tasted kinda off, maybe left it too long in the fridge?

  45. 5 stars
Quick and easy recipe! Perfect for lazy days, lol.

  46. User avatar trey.kshlerin63 says:

    1 star
Meh. Too much horseradish for me, and the refrigeration didn’t magically fix it. I’d rather just use Thousand Island.

    1. 2 stars
Just swap in Thousand Island? Honestly… that sounds easier, but it won’t taste anything like Russian dressing. The horseradish + Worcestershire is kinda the whole point. Maybe try reducing the horseradish next time instead of replacing everything.

    2. 4 stars
Totally get you—horseradish is intense. I’ve done it with 1/2 tsp instead of 1 tsp and it’s way more balanced. Refrigerating definitely helps, but it won’t tame it that much if you don’t like the flavor.

  47. User avatar Barry Manilow says:

    4 stars
Yum! Gonna try this on my burgers. Heard it’s good but no proof yet!

    1. User avatar dante.okon69 says:

      5 stars
That’s awesome! I always put it on my burgers and it’s a game changer. You won’t regret it!

  48. User avatar wilford.torphy5 says:

This dressing is amazing! It added such a nice kick to my sandwich. Will definitely make again.

    5 stars
Easiest recipe ever! Even my kids liked it! 👍

  50. User avatar burl.renner says:

    4 stars
Pretty solid recipe. I used smoked paprika and it gave a nice depth. Waiting 30 minutes helped a lot.

    1. User avatar Tahm Kench says:

      5 stars
Yes! I’m convinced the 30 minutes is the real magic. Smoked paprika makes it taste way more complex than plain paprika.

    2. User avatar joe_banana says:

      4 stars
I tried something similar but used regular paprika and mine was kinda meh. Next time I’ll do smoked too—also I think I didn’t chill it long enough. Good call.

  51. User avatar valeria.okeefe85 says:

    3 stars
My friend told me he used ranch instead and it still worked, so… maybe I will try that next.

    1. User avatar wellRespected says:

      4 stars
Ranch instead? That sounds weird but might be worth a shot! 😄

    2. User avatar Mr. Arnulfo Schiller says:

      2 stars
I dunno, ranch isn’t the same. Might ruin it!

  52. User avatar tissues_with_issues says:

    4 stars
I didn’t have prepared horseradish so I used a little extra Dijon + a tiny splash of vinegar. Still tasty, just different. Would make again, though.

  53. User avatar pura.farrell33 says:

    5 stars
Tastes just like the classic stuff I remember—creamy, tangy, and that little horseradish kick really comes through. I chilled it longer than 30 min and it got even better.

    1. User avatar wesley.rogahn1992 says:

      5 stars
Yes!! That horseradish kick is the whole point. I’m glad it improved with extra chilling—mine always does the same after a few hours.

    2. User avatar sunshine.ziemann39 says:

      3 stars
I like it, but mine tasted a little too tangy. Next time I’ll cut back the ketchup or add more mayo. Also, does smoked paprika really make a difference?

  54. User avatar angie.armstrong says:

    2 stars
Why do people love mayo? This recipe is just plain wrong. I prefer my dressing without all the goo.

  55. 4 stars
Okay, confession: I didn’t have prepared horseradish so I used horseradish sauce (the creamy kind). It still worked, but it was a little sharper. Fun experiment though.

  56. User avatar shaquana.schultz44 says:

    2 stars
Needs more salt. Like, way more. I’m probably doing something wrong but 1/2 tsp felt bland to me.

  57. User avatar gertrudis.dietrich34 says:

    3 stars
This is giving “Russian dressing” vibes, but I’m skeptical. Mayo + ketchup is basically just a fancy condiment, right? Still, my family ate it fast so… 🤷

    1. User avatar alva.skiles1951 says:

      5 stars
Haha I get the Russian dressing vibe too. But it’s not just mayo+ketchup—sour cream + horseradish + Worcestershire really changes it. Refrigerating it makes a big difference, like the flavors actually meld instead of tasting separate. If your family ate it fast, that’s usually the real proof 😄

  58. User avatar bao.reichert says:

    3 stars
I don’t have horseradish prepared so I used some prepared mustard instead. Not the same, but it was still tasty.

  59. 2 stars
Not bad, but I think 1 tsp Worcestershire is too much. I feel like it made it a bit funky? Still edible though.

  60. User avatar orville.wilderman97 says:

    4 stars
Quick and creamy. I only let it sit like 10 mins and still liked it—can only imagine how better it is after 30.

  61. User avatar winifred.pacocha21 says:

    5 stars
Wow, this is basically my dad’s Russian dressing. The Worcestershire + paprika combo is the secret I never figured out. Easy too.

    1. User avatar alejandro.abbott66 says:

      5 stars
Yes!! That Worcestershire + paprika combo is exactly it. My grandma used to do the same thing—always comes out tangy and a little smoky. So glad you nailed it!

  62. User avatar sherell.carroll56 says:

    4 stars
Couldn’t find smoked paprika, so I used regular. Didn’t notice a huge difference, but I bet it would’ve been better with smoked. Next time.

  63. 3 stars
I don’t understand why people call it Russian dressing when it’s mostly ketchup and mayo. But hey, it’s tasty on fries.

  64. User avatar Stanley Jast says:

    4 stars
I thought this was just ketchup and mayo… but WOW! This is better than I expected!

  65. User avatar Peregrin Took says:

    3 stars
Followed it exactly and it tasted good… but mine was a little too salty. Next time I’ll start with less salt and adjust.

    1. User avatar dana.pouros says:

      5 stars
So glad it tasted good! Totally makes sense—different brands of ketchup/Worcestershire can be saltier. Next time start with 1/4 tsp and adjust at the end.

  66. User avatar oPandariaNo says:

    5 stars
So quick and easy. Delicious on burgers. 30 minutes in the fridge is key—otherwise it tastes kinda flat.

    1. User avatar roselle.hammes says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—waiting those 30 minutes makes a big difference. I’ve made this for burgers and it tastes way more “real” after chilling.

    2. 3 stars
I tried it but mine tasted flat even after 30 min. Next time I’ll add a little more horseradish (or maybe more paprika?) bc 1 tsp felt kinda low to me.

  67. User avatar nelson.torphy4 says:

    3 stars
Not so sure about the horseradish… it made it quite spicy for my taste. Maybe I’ll tweak it next time.

    1. User avatar Gurney Halleck says:

      3 stars
Horseradish is supposed to give it a kick! Try it with less, but don’t omit it completely!

    2. User avatar delmar.mcdermott says:

      4 stars
I totally get you! I also think horseradish can be a bit strong. Maybe just a pinch next time?

  68. User avatar eduardo.roberts says:

    3 stars
Pretty solid, but I think 1 tsp salt might be a bit much for me. Next time I’ll do less and taste as I go.

  69. 4 stars
I’m skeptical about the horseradish amount. 1 tsp sounds like it could be spicy, but honestly it balanced nicely. Not too hot, just flavorful.

  70. User avatar dustin.leannon17 says:

    5 stars
This turned out way better than I expected—creamy, tangy, and the horseradish actually shows up without being overpowering.

  71. User avatar ArabianNights says:

    5 stars
This dressing is amazing! I used it on a salad, and everyone loved it!

    1. User avatar maisha.satterfield39 says:

      5 stars
I’m glad you loved it! This dressing really does add a unique flavor to salads. 😊

    2. 2 stars
Really? I dunno, I think Russian dressing is kinda weird. Isn’t it just ketchup and mayo? 🤔

  72. 3 stars
Not gonna lie, I kinda messed up step 2—dumped everything in at once without mixing as I went. It still came together, but texture was slightly lumpy at first.

    1. User avatar kathlene.mclaughlin2009 says:

      5 stars
Honestly that sounds totally salvageable—once the flavors chill together it usually smooths out. Next time just whisk the additions in a bit slower and you’ll get a silkier texture.

  73. User avatar pamila.kohler says:

    5 stars
I was skeptical about mixing horseradish with ketchup, but wow. It’s like a zippier Russian dressing than store-bought.

  74. 5 stars
Honestly five stars just for the easy method. Mix, chill, done. My picky eater actually asked for more!

  75. User avatar alvin.wyman says:

    4 stars
I forgot to refrigerate and served immediately… big mistake. It was kinda flat. After chilling it got way richer.

    1. User avatar santo.bednar46 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—chilling really makes a difference. Russian dressing tastes more blended after it sits 30+ minutes.

  76. User avatar christena.schultz4 says:

    5 stars
5 stars. “Russian dressing” sounds complicated but it’s literally just mixing. Easy.

  77. User avatar terminatorXYZ says:

    2 stars
My dressing turned out kinda runny. I think my sour cream was expired (probably). Flavor was good, texture was meh. Check your ingredients folks.

    1. User avatar veronika.schowalter says:

      3 stars
Mine was runny too… i thought i measured wrong but maybe my sour cream was old 😬 Next time I’ll try using full-fat and maybe add a splash more mayo? Still tastes ok though. Good call checking ingredients!

    2. User avatar Falmer Gloomlurker says:

      4 stars
Ugh, I’ve had that happen—expired sour cream definitely can mess with the texture. I usually let it sit longer than 30 min too; it thickens up a bit once the flavors meld. Thanks for the warning!

  78. User avatar carmelia.nikolaus0 says:

    4 stars
Not bad at all! The flavor is solid, though I found it a touch too salty with the Worcestershire + salt together. Next time I’ll reduce the salt a little.

  79. 2 stars
I didn’t have prepared horseradish, so I used wasabi. Big mistake… way too spicy. Still, lesson learned: follow the real ingredients.

    1. 2 stars
Honestly I think ketchup + mayo + wasabi still sounds cursed 😅 but you’re right about following the recipe. Russian dressing should be tangy, not fire-breathing.

    2. User avatar jasmine.bahringer1987 says:

      4 stars
Oof, yeah—wasabi can be *way* hotter than prepared horseradish. Good catch on learning the ingredient difference though. Next time maybe use less horseradish or add a tiny bit at first.

  80. 4 stars
Served it with salad and everyone asked what was in it. I took that as a win. My only complaint: I wanted it tangier.

  81. User avatar alexander.zieme17 says:

    2 stars
Tried it but it was too tangy for me 😕. I guess it’s a matter of preference!

    1. User avatar agustina.conroy says:

      4 stars
I thought it was perfect! A little tanginess adds flavor. Maybe try less ketchup next time? 🤷‍♂️

    2. User avatar virgilio.brown9 says:

Too tangy? I dunno, I like it sour. But yeah, taste buds are different!

Ketchup + mayo already sounds kinda weird to me, sorry. Like why not just buy the bottled stuff?

I get you, ketchup + mayo sounds cursed at first 😅 but the sour cream and horseradish balance it out. It tastes more “tangy & creamy” than “weird.” Give it a real try after chilling 30 min.

Nah bottled stuff is easier and usually better. Also Russian dressing is supposed to be like… more sweet, right? This looks too salty with horseradish, like spicy mayo.

This is giving me nostalgia. My grandma made something similar and it was always gone instantly. The Worcestershire + paprika combo is the magic.

    1. 3 stars
Wait, Worcestershire + paprika is “the magic”?? I always thought it was just ketchup lol. Might be good, but horseradish scares me a little—like will it be too spicy/strong? Any tips for dialing it back?

Totally get the nostalgia—this combo sounds exactly like those old-school party sauces. I love that it’s quick but still tastes “cooked” in a way. Definitely trying with a side of fries or on a sandwich!

I followed the recipe exactly and it tastes fine, but I wouldn’t call it “Russian” dressing in the classic sense. More like a creamy ketchup mayo sauce. Still good.

Wait Russian dressing is supposed to be red right? I made this and it was just… mayo ketchup. I think I added too much paprika? But ya it was fine. Would I make it again? idk

That’s kinda fair. “Russian” dressing is usually more tangy/spiced and not so ketchup-forward. But creamy ketchup-mayo still sounds tasty—glad it worked for you!

Tried this with deli roast beef and it was spot on—creamy, tangy, and not overly sweet. The 30 minutes in the fridge really does make a difference.

    thumbs up.

My sour cream was runny so it didn’t emulsify the same, I think. End result was fine, just not as smooth. Maybe chill longer?

Maybe you used like diet sour cream? I always add mine and it gets smooth right away. Next time try mixing slower? Also I’m pretty sure you only need like 10 minutes in the fridge 😂

Yeah, that tracks. If the sour cream was pretty loose, it probably didn’t emulsify as well with the mayo/ketchup. Chilling longer helps a lot—30 min is kind of the minimum.

Made this for a burger night—so good. The horseradish gives it that little kick without tasting like straight hot stuff. Refrigerating really helps.

I made this for a deli-sandwich situation and it disappeared fast. Could probably be my new go-to dressing.

  90. 4 stars
I followed the measurements pretty closely, and after 30 minutes in the fridge it tasted way better than right away. The paprika smell is legit.

Hmm maybe I did it wrong but mine was kinda harsh, like too much horseradish? I used regular paprika (not smoked) and only let it sit 10 min… next time I’ll wait longer I guess. How “prepared” is your horseradish—jar stuff?

    2. 5 stars
Yes! That 30-minute chill really does something—like the flavors finally agree with each other. The smoked paprika touch is where it’s at for me too.

This is basically my childhood sandwich sauce in a bowl. The horseradish really makes it pop—I’d definitely add a little extra next time.

This is good, but “Russian” seems like a stretch—more like a tangy mayo-ketchup dressing. Still works great on coleslaw.

Not Russian, not sure what I expected 😂 but it’s tasty. Could use more heat—next time I’ll add a dash of cayenne.

I was skeptical about mixing ketchup with mayo, but it actually tastes like the “real deal” Russian dressing I grew up with. Easy too.

Tried it as a sandwich sauce and it’s actually spot-on. The horseradish gives it a nice little kick without being too aggressive.

Way too salty for my liking. I’d cut the salt in half next time and then season slowly.

    1. User avatar Willie Schneider says:

Totally agree—Russian dressing can go heavy on the salt fast. Cutting it in half (or even doing 1/4 tsp first) and tasting as you go is the way to do it. 👍

Not gonna lie, I was worried about the horseradish amount, but it balanced out. I’d do a tiny extra dash of pepper next time though.

  98. 4 stars
I’m skeptical about smoked paprika in Russian dressing. That sounds like fusion for no reason, but honestly it tastes interesting.

  99. 5 stars
The Worcestershire + ketchup combo is weirdly perfect. I used regular paprika since I didn’t have smoked—still great.

    1. 5 stars
Totally agree—Worcestershire + ketchup is one of those “doesn’t sound right but works” combos. The smoky paprika must add a really nice depth too!

    2. 3 stars
Hmm I tried something like this and it tasted kinda like steak sauce, but my horseradish was old I think. Regular paprika would make it less smoky—still sounds okay though.
