Naan Recipe

October 3, 2025

Soft, pillowy, and slightly charred from the pan, naan recipe is one of those breads that can instantly elevate any meal. Originally from South Asia, this beloved flatbread has found its way into kitchens and restaurants around the world, loved for its versatility and irresistible texture. Whether served alongside a fragrant curry, used to scoop up creamy dips, or simply enjoyed warm with a brush of melted butter, naan is a staple that turns even the simplest meal into something memorable.

What makes naan so special is its texture – tender and chewy on the inside, with just a hint of crispness and smoky flavor on the outside. Traditionally, it’s cooked in a tandoor, a clay oven that gives it those signature charred spots and blistered edges. At home, you can achieve a similar result using a hot cast-iron skillet or griddle, which mimics the intense heat and helps the dough puff beautifully. The key is to keep the dough soft and slightly sticky, which ensures that light, airy crumb once it hits the hot surface.

The dough itself is a simple mixture of flour, Greek yogurt, water, and a touch of yeast or baking powder, which gives the bread its signature softness. The yogurt not only enriches the flavor but also keeps the naan tender, while a little oil or melted butter adds richness. Once cooked, naan is often brushed with ghee or butter and sprinkled with herbs like cilantro or nigella seeds for a fragrant finishing touch.

Naan is more than just a side, it’s a versatile companion to countless dishes. Pair it with saucy curries, wrap it around grilled meats and vegetables for a quick meal, or use it as a base for flatbread-style pizzas. Fresh from the pan and still warm, this naan recipe is impossible to resist tearing into a piece and savoring its soft, flavorful layers. Simple yet satisfying, naan is proof that the most humble ingredients can come together to create something truly extraordinary.
