Mushroom and goat cheese mini tarts are an elegant bite sized treat that combines earthy flavors with creamy richness. These delicate pastries are perfect for parties, brunch tables, or as a refined appetizer that feels both comforting and sophisticated.
The base is usually made from flaky puff pastry or shortcrust dough, baked until light and golden. Inside, sautéed mushrooms bring deep, savory notes, enhanced by garlic, onions, and a touch of thyme or rosemary. The mushrooms soften and release their natural juices, creating a flavorful filling that pairs beautifully with the tangy creaminess of goat cheese.
Goat cheese is the perfect partner for mushrooms. Its slightly sharp, creamy texture cuts through the earthiness and adds a bright contrast that keeps each bite balanced. When baked, the cheese becomes gently golden on top while staying soft and luscious inside the tart.
One of the best things about these mini tarts is their versatility. They can be served warm or at room temperature, making them ideal for entertaining. You can also customize them by adding caramelized onions, spinach, or a drizzle of honey for a subtle sweet note.
Mushroom and goat cheese mini tarts look beautiful on any platter, with their golden edges and rustic, inviting filling. They pair wonderfully with a crisp green salad, a glass of white wine, or sparkling water with lemon. Despite their elegant appearance, they are surprisingly easy to prepare and require only a few simple ingredients.
These mini tarts bring together texture, flavor, and presentation in perfect harmony. They are the kind of appetizer that feels special without being complicated, making them a reliable favorite for both everyday moments and special occasions.

Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon olive oil for sautéing
- 8 ounces mushrooms finely chopped
- 1 clove garlic minced
- 1/2 teaspoon thyme dried
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper freshly ground
- 4 ounces goat cheese crumbled
- 1 sheet puff pastry thawed
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
- In a skillet over medium heat, heat the olive oil. Add the mushrooms, garlic, thyme, salt, and pepper. Cook until the mushrooms are tender and their moisture has evaporated, about 5-7 minutes. Let cool slightly.
- Roll out the puff pastry on a floured surface and cut into 12 squares.
- Place each pastry square into the cups of a mini muffin tin, pressing down gently to form shells.
- Fill each shell with the mushroom mixture and top with crumbled goat cheese.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, until the pastry is golden brown and the cheese is bubbling.
- Remove from the oven and allow to cool for a few minutes before serving.

The instructions were a bit confusing. Should’ve made it clearer about the cooling down part.
Gonna try this for my potluck! Fingers crossed! 🤞
Not a fan of goat cheese… it’s too strong. I might try this with cheddar next time. Could work?
I followed the recipe and everything, but it didn’t taste like much. Maybe more spices? Idk, 2/5 for me.
Tasted amazing, but I forgot to buy thyme. Just used oregano. Still delicious!
These tarts are delightful! The combination of mushrooms and goat cheese is just perfect. Will make them again for my party!
Wow! So easy to make and tasty. Even my kids loved them!
I dunno, mushrooms and goat cheese? Seems kinda weird for kids. Don’t think mine would eat that.
That’s awesome to hear! My kids can be picky, so I always appreciate kid-approved recipes. Can’t wait to try these myself!
I tried making these, but I think I overcooked the mushrooms. They ended up soggy. Any tips for next time?
Yum! 😍 Just what I needed for my little gathering, everyone enjoyed them!
I’m not a big goat cheese person… but surprisingly I liked it. It balances the mushrooms well. I’d add a tiny pinch of chili flakes next time.
Not bad, but I think it needed more seasoning. Next time I’ll add some more herbs.
I followed the recipe but my pastry was a bit soggy. Guess maybe I didn’t cook the mushrooms long enough?
Soggy crusts can be a pain! You might wanna try baking the mushrooms a bit longer and maybe use less filling. Hope it turns out better next time!
Super easy to make! I added some spinach to the mix and it turned out great!
Easy to make but kinda bland. I added some chili flakes to spice it up.
Bland? I thought it was delicious. Maybe you just didn’t season enough? 🤷♂️
I totally agree! They looked great but I found them a bit dull too. Next time, I’m definitely adding more spices!
I found the instructions confusing. Shouldn’t we bake the pastry first? Not sure how they turned out.
Wow! These are amazing! Tried them for my party and they disappeared in seconds!
My kids loved these! Even my picky eater asked for more. Who knew mushrooms could be so good?
Absolutely delicious! Made these for a party and they were gone in minutes. Will definitely make again!
I made these too! So good and they disappeared fast. Perfect for a party!
Mushrooms? Yuck! I don’t know how people eat that, but my friend liked it.
Mushrooms are the best! They add so much flavor. Maybe give them another try?
I dunno, but goat cheese sounds weird too. Why would you mix those? Just not my thing.
Yum! Quick to make, perfect for snack. Also, goat cheese is fancy! Love it!
I thought goat cheese was supposed to be gross… but these were surprisingly good!
Can I use cheddar instead of goat cheese? Don’t have any and don’t really like goat cheese that much.
super tasty!!! who knew mushrooms could taste this good!!!
These mini tarts r so cute! I had fun making them with my kids. Totally gonna try again.
Mushrooms r gross. Who eats that? Yuck! I would never serve this to my family.
Mushrooms are actually really good! You just haven’t tried them prepared the right way. This dish sounds delicious!
Not sure about the timing—15-20 minutes was not enough for me. Also, I don’t really get why you cool the mushrooms “slightly” (how slightly?). Still, the taste was decent.
I thought mushrooms were disgusting but these tarts are surprisingly good! I will make again.
Really? I can’t imagine mushrooms tasting good. They still give me the creeps. But if you liked these tarts, maybe I should try ’em.
I’m so glad you enjoyed them! Mushrooms can be really tasty when prepared right. Give them another try in other dishes; you might be surprised!
What if I don’t have puff pastry? Can I use bread or something? Asking for a friend.
You could try using bread, but it won’t be the same texture. Puff pastry is super flaky! Maybe make a sandwich version instead?
Bread? Uhh, I dunno about that. It might turn out soggy or something. Just get the puff pastry, it’s not that hard to find.
meh.. not my fav. My mom makes better. But hey, at least I tried!
Not sure about the goat cheese. Might just use cheddar next time.
I’m not a fan of mushrooms, but my friends loved these tarts. I guess it’s a matter of taste!
I’m with you on the mushrooms! But hey, if your friends liked them, that’s what matters! Maybe next time you could try a different filling?
Yummy tarts! My kids finished them all. Can’t believe how quick they were to make. 👍
These tarts were absolutely divine! Perfect for a party. 5 stars!
I tried these tarts at a party and everyone loved them! Thanks for the recipe!
Are these really that good? I mean, mushrooms and goat cheese? Sounds kinda weird to me.
Took too long to prep. I don’t have that kind of time!
OMG, these are super delicious! Made them twice this week. A total crowd pleaser!
I have to try these! They sound amazing, glad you enjoyed them!
I tried this recipe but it was hard for me to follow. Maybe too complicated for me.
Goat cheese + mushrooms is a classic, so I figured this would be good. Still, I wish it gave a little guidance on how full to pack the shells—some of mine overflowed.
The instructions were clear, but it seemed like a lot of work for a snack. I think I’ll stick with chips.
Idk… I followed it mostly but mine stuck to the pan. Also I used regular cheese by mistake and it wasn’t the same. Still, I ate them all lol.
quick and easy, no cap 😅 i used regular buttered puff pastry and it still turned out fine. next time i’ll cut smaller squares for more filling ratio.
Easy recipe but I don’t like mushrooms. I swapped them for spinach and used feta instead of goat cheese. Came out yum!
These turned out sooo good. The mushroom filling is super flavorful and the goat cheese makes it feel fancy without much effort. I served them at a get-together and they disappeared fast.
Much easier than I thought! Will make again, no doubt!
I don’t really get why everyone loves goat cheese, it’s so strong! I might just try using cheddar instead next time.
Why do you have to preheat the oven? Can’t just shove it in there and call it a day? Seems like extra steps.
Pretty tasty, but my pastry didn’t puff as much as I expected. I think I over-pressed the squares into the tin. Still delicious though—savory little bites.
Goat cheese + mushrooms is classic, but I found the flavor a little mild. Maybe more pepper or herbs would help. Still tasty though.
Pretty solid idea, and the timing was on point for me (mine were close to 18 minutes). I’m not a huge thyme person, but it worked well with the mushrooms.
Glad it worked for you! I also found timing is pretty forgiving here—mine were around 19 minutes and came out nicely golden. The thyme-mushroom combo is better than I expected too.
Not totally sure about the 400°F for 15-20… mine got kind of overdone on the edges at like 18 min. Next time I’ll pull them a bit earlier or lower the temp. Still tasty though!
I skipped the salt since my doctor said not to. Still turned out great! Flavors were rich. Thumbs up!
I tried making these but they turned out soggy. Maybe I didn’t cook the mushrooms long enough? I’ll give it another go.
I tried this recipe but it didn’t work for me. The pastry was soggy. Not sure what I did wrong.
These tarts are heavenly! The combo of mushrooms and goat cheese is just perfect. Everyone loved them at the party.
Honestly, I expected these to taste more mushroomy? Like the flavor was good but kinda subtle. Also they got soggy after a while if left out.
I feel you—mine were more “savory” than “mushroomy” too. Next time I’d cook the mushrooms a bit longer to really drive off moisture and maybe add an extra pinch of thyme or even a tiny splash of soy sauce for depth.
Soggy for me also if they sit. I think the key is letting the mushroom mix cool completely before filling (otherwise it steams the pastry). Also, serve right away—these mini tarts aren’t great left out for long.
Short and sweet – YUM! 😋
Made these for brunch and they were gone fast. The mushrooms cooked down perfectly in 7 minutes, and the goat cheese bubbling on top is such a good touch.
My pastry didn’t rise like it should have. Did I do something wrong? 🤔
Sounds like you might have not rolled out the pastry enough or it was too cold! Always make sure it’s at room temp. Hope it goes better next time! 😊
SUPER tasty!! I added some spinach from my garden and it was a hit!
I made them with pre-minced garlic and dried thyme. Still came out good. Next time I’ll try fresh thyme though.
Dried thyme should be okay… but I always feel like dried stuff is weaker? Next time try fresh, I guess. Also 5-7 minutes seems short—mine always needs longer to cook off the mushroom water or it gets soggy.
Glad it worked out! Pre-minced garlic can be totally fine—fresh thyme is definitely a nice upgrade though. I love how these little tarts come out golden with that goat cheese melt.
Used feta instead of goat cheese because I ran out. Still turned out great! Yum!
Delicious!!!!!!! ❤️
Meh, I expected more flavor. It was just okay, maybe needs more spices?
These are amazing! I made them for a party and everyone loved them. Will definitely make again!
I dunno, they seemed kinda bland when I made ’em. Maybe I did it wrong, but I’d give it a 2.
I totally agree! They were a hit at my gathering too. The goat cheese adds so much flavor! 😊
These tarts were a hit at my party! Everyone loved them 🍄❤️
Really easy to make and the flavor was incredible! Definitely adding this to my recipe book.
I’m glad to hear it was easy and so tasty! These mini tarts are a hit at parties!
These are dangerously good. The puff pastry gets perfectly golden and the goat cheese melts like it was meant to be there. I added a pinch of chili flakes just because—would make again!
Totally agree—those golden edges are everything. I love that the goat cheese actually bubbles instead of just melting weird. Great idea with the chili flakes too 👌
I made these but my pastry didn’t get golden—more like pale and soggy. I might’ve overfilled the cups or not cooked the mushrooms long enough to dry out. Still tasted good though. Next time I’ll drain/more bake.
Are you sure mushroom and cheese go together? I’m skeptical.
I totally get your skepticism, but mushrooms and goat cheese are like magic together! The flavors balance perfectly. Give it a try, you might be surprised! 🍄🧀
Eh, it was okay. I was expecting more flavor, but maybe I’m just picky.
These tarts are amazing! I made them for a party and everyone loved them. Will definitely make again.
Made these for a brunch thing—so good. The mushrooms cook down perfectly and the goat cheese bubbles like the recipe said. Will definitely do again.
Wait… goat cheese bubbles? Mine never does unless I crank the heat way up. Still, they look tasty. Did you bake longer than 15-20?
Yes!! I love when the mushrooms actually cook down instead of staying watery. These sound dangerous good for brunch 😄
I tried these but they didn’t turn out great. The pastry was too doughy and the filling was kinda bland. Ya might wanna season it more.
I had the same issue! The filling could definitely use more flavor. Maybe try some herbs or spices next time? Personally, I added some balsamic glaze, and it was WAY better.
Dunno what u did wrong, but mine turned out fine. I think maybe the puff pastry was just a bit overcooked. Try lower heat next time.
Meh. Tastes like mushrooms and cheese, which is fine, but not mind-blowing. I’d add more seasoning or maybe caramelize the mushrooms longer.
The flavor is nice, but 12 squares didn’t really cover my muffin tin cups. I had to trim and redo some. Could be my pastry sheet size.
Pretty tasty, but I ended up cooking the mushrooms closer to 10 minutes because there was still a lot of liquid. Maybe my mushrooms were extra watery. Otherwise, easy win.
I used dried thyme like it says (because I’m lazy lol) and it worked. The puff pastry got super flaky—great combo with the tangy cheese.
I’m skeptical about puff pastry in a mini tart form. But wow, the crust actually stayed crisp for me. My guests ate them way faster than I expected.
400°F is too hot, my pastries browned way too fast before the inside warmed. Maybe lower temp? Taste was okay but not wow.
Surprisingly fancy for how easy it is. I used a little extra thyme because I’m that person, and it totally worked. Will do again.
Not bad, but my filling was a bit wet even after cooking. I should’ve chopped the mushrooms finer or cooked them longer to evaporate the moisture.
Not bad, but I think 400°F is a little too hot for my oven. The edges browned before the centers looked set, so I’d try 375°F next time and bake a touch longer.
Great appetizer idea. I also added a pinch of red pepper flakes and it kicked it up. Would recommend.
These turned out way fancier than I expected. The goat cheese gets all melty and the mushroom filling is super flavorful—will definitely make again for guests.
Right?! I made these once and they totally look bakery-level. I also love how the goat cheese bubbles—so good with the mushroom filling.
Not gonna lie, I thought my filling would be too wet, but I followed the step about cooking until the moisture evaporates. Came out amazing. Would add a tiny bit of nutmeg next time maybe.
Goat cheese on puff pastry is always a win. I added a pinch of red pepper flakes and wow—would absolutely make again. Great appetizer idea.
I followed it exactly and they looked great, but the flavor was kinda bland? I think I under-salted the mushroom mixture. Also maybe my garlic wasn’t strong enough.
Hmm I dunno… I feel like garlic strength shouldn’t change flavor that much if it’s cooked with mushrooms. I usually just add more goat cheese though, like extra crumble on top, because otherwise it’s kinda mild. Maybe your pastry was bland too?
That sounds exactly like an under-seasoning issue. With mushrooms, they can be pretty “earthy” but not automatically savory—I’d try adding a pinch more salt to the mushroom mixture (or even a tiny splash of soy sauce/Worcestershire if you’re into that). Also let the mushrooms really cook until the moisture is totally gone.
Am I supposed to let the mushrooms cool? I skipped that and it still worked, sort of. The pastry didn’t mind too much, but flavor was weaker.
Yeah, it’s best to let the mushrooms cool a bit so they’re not steaming hot when you fill the pastry. If you skip it, the moisture/steam can make the flavor feel muted and the pastry a little less crisp—but glad it still worked “sort of”! Next time, even 5 minutes helps.
I always skip the cooling part and it still comes out fine for me. Weak flavor though makes me think you might’ve undercooked the mushrooms or the salt/pepper wasn’t enough. Also goat cheese varies a lot—some are tangier than others.
Mine turned out a little soggy in the middle because I didn’t cook the mushrooms long enough—5 minutes wasn’t enough for my pan. Next time I’ll let the moisture fully evaporate like the recipe says.
Mine were a little bland, and I followed the recipe pretty close. Maybe my mushrooms were not flavorful enough? I’d add more pepper or maybe some parmesan next time.
I think 400°F is right, but mine got a little too dark at 18 minutes. Next time I’ll pull them closer to 15 and keep an eye on the puff pastry.
These are delicious! Also, my pastry actually stayed flaky instead of getting soggy—score. Thank you for the cool-down step.
Really good balance of earthy mushrooms and tangy goat cheese. I used a bit more thyme and it tasted even better. Easy too!
I burned the first batch because I went to grab my phone lol. The second batch was perfect after 15 minutes. Super easy appetizer and honestly looks fancy for how quick it is.
Followed the steps exactly, but mine got a little soggy. I think I didn’t cook the mushrooms long enough for the moisture to fully evaporate.
I might be doing something wrong, but my mushrooms never really “evaporated” the moisture in 7 minutes. I had to cook them longer and it was a bit watery at first.
Why do they call them “mini tarts” when it’s basically puff pastry cups? Not complaining, just confused. Still delicious though.
Totally fair question—“mini tarts” is kind of a loose name for anything tart-ish with a pastry shell. Puff pastry cups = same vibe, just easier/faster 😄
Because they’re like tarts but made in muffin tin. Puff pastry is still dough, so—yeah. Also they’re perfect finger food, idk why people overthink words lol.
Mine came out a little soggy even after baking. I think I didn’t let the mushroom moisture evaporate enough. Next time I’ll drain/cook longer.
Totally get that—mushrooms hold onto water like it’s their job. I’ve found if you cook them closer to the 7–10 minute range (until the pan looks kinda dry) and let them cool before filling, they don’t end up soggy. Also make sure you’re baking until the pastry is really golden.
Not sure why people love puff pastry so much… but okay, these are tasty. The crust is flaky, and the filling actually tastes like something.
This is one of those recipes that sounds fancy but is actually doable. My picky eater tried one and stole two more.
I burned the bottoms on my first batch 😬. Oven runs hot I guess. But once I adjusted to 390°F, they were perfect.
I’m not usually a goat cheese person, but wow. The thyme + mushrooms combo is great. Next time I might add a tiny pinch of chili flakes for some kick.
Wow I’m with you—goat cheese usually isn’t my thing, but these sound dangerously good. The thyme + mushrooms combo is perfect. Love the chili flakes idea too!
1 sheet puff pastry makes a lot of these—cheap and easy. Mine came out a little salty because I used table salt instead of “fine” salt? But overall I’d rate it 4-ish.
I followed it pretty closely, but mine leaked a little—maybe I pressed the pastry too thin. Still tasty though, and the thyme + garlic combo is legit.
Glad it still worked out! If it leaked, I’ve found puff pastry gets way more likely to do that if you press too thin or stretch the edges—next time, leave a little “rim” thickness when you press it in.
Mine did that once too… I think my pan was greased weird? Also I chopped the mushrooms too chunky and they stayed wet, so maybe that helped the filling push out. But yeah thyme + garlic is a good combo.
These came out super crispy and the goat cheese flavor really stands out. I let the mushroom mixture cook a couple extra minutes so it wasn’t watery—big difference. Will make again for brunch.
Yes!! I had the same issue with watery filling before—extra minutes in the pan totally fixes it. Love the goat cheese punch. Brunch winner for sure.
Hmm sounds good, but I’m not sure about baking 15-20 min at 400°F. My puff pastry never gets that crispy at that temp—maybe my tin is different? I’ll try cooking the mushrooms longer though.
