Italian lentil soup is a hearty, comforting dish that combines simple ingredients with rich, savory flavors to create a meal that warms both body and soul. This classic soup is beloved for its depth, versatility, and nourishing qualities, making it a staple in Italian kitchens.
The base of the soup usually begins with a soffritto of onions, carrots, and celery sautéed in olive oil. Garlic, tomatoes, and aromatic herbs such as rosemary, thyme, and bay leaves are added to build layers of flavor. Lentils, the star ingredient, are simmered slowly in vegetable or chicken broth until tender, absorbing the herbs and seasonings while lending a creamy texture to the soup. Some versions include pancetta or Italian sausage for extra richness, though it works equally well as a vegetarian dish.
What makes Italian lentil soup so satisfying is its balance. The earthy lentils, sweet vegetables, and savory broth come together harmoniously, creating a hearty yet light meal. A drizzle of good olive oil and a sprinkle of freshly grated Parmesan cheese just before serving adds a finishing touch of flavor and richness.
This soup is also incredibly versatile. You can add potatoes, kale, or spinach for extra nutrition, or serve it over small pasta like ditalini or orzo to make it even more filling. Leftovers taste even better the next day, as the flavors continue to meld and deepen.
Italian lentil soup pairs beautifully with crusty bread, focaccia, or a simple side salad, making it perfect for a cozy weeknight dinner or a satisfying lunch. It is nourishing, flavorful, and comforting, yet simple enough to prepare with everyday ingredients.
More than just a meal, this soup embodies the Italian philosophy of cooking: using fresh, quality ingredients, and letting each one shine. Every spoonful is a reminder of home, tradition, and the timeless pleasure of a warm bowl of soup.

Perfect for a chilly day! Loved it, 10/10!
I made this soup last night, and it was so hearty! Definitely a new favorite.
I don’t know, I think it might have been too bland for my taste. Needs more spices or something.
Easy recipe, but I added some chili flakes for an extra kick! Yummy!
Chili flakes sound like a great idea! I might try that next time.
How do you get lentils to be tender in 30 minutes? Mine took forever!
This soup was amazing! So hearty and filling. Will definitely make again!
Is this really Italian? It lacks the flavor I expect. Maybe try adding some parmesan.
Too much stuff in there! Just stick to basic soup!
Not bad. I think I put too much garlic though. Next time I’ll use less.
Garlic is awesome! But yeah, it can be strong. Next time, maybe just one clove? Or do like I do and let it shine! 😂
Woah, lentil soup? Kinda weird but surprisingly tasty!
Didn’t like it. Just not my thing. Lentils taste weirdt.
Absolutely delicious! I’m not a great cook but even I managed this. Thanks!
Made this last night and it’s super cozy. The oregano/basil combo tastes really Italian without being fussy. I added extra pepper and a squeeze of lemon at the end—wow.
Simple and easy to make! Perfect for the winter. 🍲
Pretty good, but mine took longer than 35 minutes. I think my lentils were older. Flavor is solid though—next time I’ll simmer covered to speed it up.
I followed the recipe mostly, but it came out a bit bland until I salted more. Also I used regular broth and it was okay—maybe that’s why. Still, easy and healthy.
Tastes like cafeteria soup 😕
This soup was delicious! I loved the flavors, especially with the garlic. Will def make again.
This tastes super comforting—like classic Italian home cooking. The herbs actually come through without being overpowering.
Just wow. 10/10 would eat again. (Also my cat tried to steal the diced tomatoes.)
Not my favorite. Soup should be creamy, this is like… too chunky for me.
I get what you mean! I prefer my soup smooth too. Have you tried blending it a bit after cooking? Might help! 😊
I’m not sure about the timing—my lentils took closer to 45 minutes. Still ended up delicious though.
What kind of lentils do you use? I had brown ones, but they didn’t really cook evenly. Anyone else have this issue?
Took way too long to cook! I gave up after 45 mins. The lentils were still hard. Not impressed.
I had a similar issue! Lentils can be tricky sometimes. Did you soak them beforehand? That might help next time.
The ingredient list looks solid, but celery and carrot together feel weird to me. Surprisingly, it’s actually tasty.
No lie, this is one of those recipes you can’t mess up. Very forgiving and the leftovers taste even better.
Honestly, that sounds exactly like the kind of soup I need—easy and still tastes good next day. I’ll try it this week!
I switched carrots for potatoes and added some chili flakes. Yum!
I didn’t have dried basil so I used Italian seasoning instead. It came out kinda good but not the same—more ‘general’ than Italian.
Lentils are healthy, right? I might try this just for the health aspect. Looks easy too, so who knows.
Made it last night and it was hearty and flavorful. I used a little extra garlic and it still worked great.
I cooked it and my broth was too thin after simmering. Maybe because I used different lentils? I added a splash of water and it thickened.
i think the broth was too thin cause you didnt let it reduce enuf. 30-35 min might not be long if your lentils are older. Also “splash of water” would thin it more but if it thickened then maybe it was actually undercooked 😅
That makes sense—some lentils (like red vs. brown/green) break down faster and can change how thick it ends up. Next time, simmer a bit longer or mash a cup of it and stir it back in.
Pretty good, but mine turned out a bit bland even after salting. Next time I’ll add more oregano or a pinch of chili flakes.
Made this tonight—so cozy. The flavors are simple but they really come together. I added a squeeze of lemon at the end and it tasted extra fresh.
Pretty good for a weekday meal. I used what I had (a little Italian seasoning instead of separate oregano/basil) and it still worked. Lentils were tender at 32 minutes.
I’m skeptical about the dried herbs amount. Like 1 tsp each feels small compared to all the liquid. Mine tasted a little muted, but adding crushed red pepper helped a lot.
I followed the steps exactly and mine turned out kind of bland. Next time I’m definitely adding more salt and maybe some chili flakes for kick.
Too healthy. 😬 Still, it’s actually good.
As an Italian grandma would say—where’s the parmesan? 😅 Also the broth amount seemed a little much; I ended up simmering longer to thicken it.
Not to be that person but 30-35 min feels short for lentils? Mine took closer to 45, and I was worried I did something wrong. Still ended up tasty though.
