Homemade Tater Tots

July 25, 2025

Homemade Tater Tots are proof that sometimes the simplest snacks bring the most joy. Crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and packed with that nostalgic potato flavor, these bite-sized treats are impossible to resist. They’re a throwback to childhood lunch trays and late-night cravings, but when made at home, they become something even better, fresher, crispier, and way more satisfying.

What makes homemade tater tots stand out is the texture. Unlike fries or mashed potatoes, tots have a unique, shredded consistency that gives them that signature bite. When they’re made from scratch, you can control everything, from the seasoning and oil to the size and crunch factor. That means you can go classic with just salt and pepper or get creative with garlic, herbs, or even cheese mixed right into the potatoes.

They’re also surprisingly fun to make. Once the potatoes are parboiled, grated, and seasoned, shaping the tots can feel almost meditative. It’s one of those kitchen tasks that’s satisfying in its rhythm. Plus, you get to decide how crispy you want them, pan-fried for that golden crunch, baked for a lighter feel, or even air-fried if you’re skipping extra oil.

Tater tots are incredibly versatile, too. Serve them as a side dish, use them as the base for a breakfast hash, or pile them high with toppings for a loaded tot platter. They’re perfect party food and also a smart way to use up leftover potatoes. Whether you’re cooking for kids, friends, or just yourself, they always bring a little extra excitement to the plate.

Most of all, there’s something deeply comforting about a batch of tater tots fresh from your own kitchen. It’s a snack that feels both playful and familiar, and the satisfaction of knowing you made them yourself makes each bite even better. Homemade tater tots aren’t just a side dish, they’re a crispy little celebration of everything we love about potatoes.

Tater tots are da bomb! I can’t believe I can make them at home now, thanks for sharing!

Why do people make these from scratch? Just buy them frozen! It’s easier and tastes the same.

I didn’t have vegetable oil, so I used olive oil. Bad idea! They didn’t taste right. Stick to the recipe, folks.

I don’t know what I did wrong, but mine turned out soggy. 😕 Maybe I didn’t fry them long enough?

  8. 5 stars
These tater tots are amazing! I made them for my kids and they gobbled them up. Definitely a recipe to keep!

Is it really necessary to parboil the potatoes? Seems like a lot of trouble for some tots.

  10. 5 stars
Just made this and I have to say, #taterlove! Crispy and golden 😍.

I found this recipe a bit confusing and the tots didn’t hold together well 😕. Maybe I added too much flour?

Tater tots? I thought this said tater totts. I made them and now I’m hungry for more!

    1. User avatar deanne.walsh94 says:

      2 stars
I dunno, they didn’t turn out for me. Mine were kinda mushy… maybe I didn’t squeeze the water enough? 🤔

Tater totts or tots, either way, they look delicious! I’m glad you enjoyed them! Just try to cook more next time, so you don’t get hungry again. 😄

Yum yum yum! Made these for my kids and they ate them all. Will be making again!

  14. User avatar herman.mayer28 says:

Pretty good, but mine were a little bland even after salting. Next time I’ll add a bit more pepper or maybe some paprika for color.

    1. 5 stars
I feel you—tater tots can turn out kinda muted if the seasoning isn’t punchy. Paprika is a great call. I also like adding a pinch of cayenne or even a little smoked paprika for extra flavor.

    2. 3 stars
Hmm I wonder if your parboil was too long or you didn’t squeeze enough moisture out. When mine come out bland, it’s usually because they’re a bit watery inside and the seasoning doesn’t stick right. Try drying them more and letting the spice mix sit a minute.

  15. User avatar carolynn.sporer84 says:

These tater tots are amazing! Crispy and full of flavor.

    1. 5 stars
Totally agree! They taste so much better than the frozen ones! Yum!

I don’t know… seems like a lot of work for just some tater tots. Can’t you just buy them?

  16. User avatar adena.kassulke says:

    4 stars
could use more seasoning. also i was tired and made them too big lol but they still were good

  17. User avatar robbie.bogan70 says:

    2 stars
Okay not gonna lie… I overcooked the parboil by like 15 minutes and my texture was more mashed than tot-y. But the seasoning saved it.

  18. User avatar Magrathean sperm whale says:

    4 stars
Pretty good! My tots didn’t all brown evenly though; next time I’ll make them a bit more uniform. Also, 2 pounds is a lot—didn’t realize how many batches that would be.

  19. User avatar ivory.weimann94 says:

    5 stars
These came out super crispy! The towel squeeze step is key—mine were way drier after that. Great flavor with the garlic/onion powder.

    1. 3 stars
I tried it but mine weren’t as crispy—maybe my oil temp was wrong? Also I didn’t let the potatoes cool enough after parboil (oops). Still tasty though, will try again.

    2. User avatar Eddie the Computer says:

      5 stars
Yes!! The towel squeeze is the make-or-break step. I did that and they stayed super crisp instead of turning sad and soggy. Love the garlic/onion combo too.

  20. 5 stars
These came out way better than I expected—crispy outside, fluffy inside. I squeezed the moisture super well and it really made the difference.

  21. User avatar Charles Darwin says:

    4 stars
Not bad! I did find it a little bland until I added extra salt and some paprika. Also frying time felt longer than 3-4 minutes for my stove, but still got golden.

  22. 4 stars
Can you freeze these before frying? I wanna make a big batch 😊

  23. 3 stars
Not bad. Kinda easy, but deep frying is messy and I burned them a little.

    1. 4 stars
Deep frying can be tricky! Maybe try baking them next time. Easier cleanup!

    2. 3 stars
I dunno, I think they’re better when oven-baked! Less mess and no burning.

  24. 3 stars
I’m skeptical about only parboiling 10 minutes. Mine weren’t fully cooked inside at first, so I had to fry a little longer.

    1. 4 stars
I think the 10 min is fine… my batch always turns out but I cut them smaller. If you do big potatoes though, it makes sense they’ll be raw inside. Maybe try smaller pieces next time.

    2. User avatar lissette.konopelski6 says:

      5 stars
Yeah, I’ve found 10 minutes can be a little too optimistic depending on potato size. If they’re thicker chunks or older potatoes, they’ll need a bit more parboil time before shaping/frying.

  25. 1 star
Why do people use russet potatoes? Aren’t all potatoes the same? 🤔

  26. User avatar kevin.gorczany72 says:

    2 stars
I don’t have a box grater so I pulsed the potatoes in a processor… bad idea, kind of gummy. Still edible, but not worth repeating.

  27. 3 stars
Not gonna lie, I burnt my first batch (medium-high was a mistake for my stove). But after lowering the heat they got crispy. Worth trying again.

  28. User avatar Dr. Sam Gibson says:

    5 stars
OMG, these are my new favorite snack! So crispy and golden! ❤

  29. User avatar elinore.huel24 says:

    5 stars
Yum! Takes me back to school lunches. Will make again!

  30. User avatar antony.mitchell80 says:

    2 stars
Ugh! My mixture was too wet, they just fell apart in the oil. 😩

  31. User avatar trula.murazik says:

    3 stars
Only thing: I used 1 tsp salt by accident and they were too salty. Fix that and it’s a solid recipe. Also, grating is weirdly therapeutic.

    1. User avatar amado.blanda says:

      4 stars
Good catch on the salt—mine also got too salty one time when I didn’t pay attention. I think starting with like 1/2 tsp max (or even less) depending on your potato size would be perfect. Still, the tot texture is spot on.

    2. User avatar Ilban Richese says:

      3 stars
“Grating is therapeutic” is so real 😅 I will say I disagree a little on the salt amount though—this was bland for me until I actually salted the oil/seasoned more. Idk, maybe potatoes vary a lot. Either way tasty!

  32. User avatar hassie.hirthe46 says:

    2 stars
I dunno, mine didn’t come out right. They were mushy and fell apart. Maybe I did somethin wrong?

    1. User avatar Adam Baum says:

      4 stars
Maybe you didn’t squeeze out enough moisture? That’s probably what made them mushy. I had the same problem before!

  33. User avatar tracey.abshire33 says:

    5 stars
These were AMAZING! So crispy and delicious 😍

  34. User avatar errol.wiza35 says:

    4 stars
I’m skeptical about the flour amount (1/4 cup for 2 pounds sounded low), but it worked. The tots held together surprisingly well.

  35. 3 stars
Not bad, but the 1/4 cup flour felt low—mine didn’t hold together well. I ended up adding a bit more flour and that fixed it. Still, texture could be better.

    1. 4 stars
Good point—1/4 cup flour depends a lot on how dry the potatoes are after squeezing. If anyone’s mixture feels too wet, adding a tablespoon at a time should help hold together. I’ve done the “more flour” fix too.

    2. User avatar rosamaria.huels99 says:

      3 stars
Mine worked exactly as written 🤷‍♂️ maybe you didn’t squeeze enough water out? I also chilled the grated potato mix for like 10 min before shaping and it was way less sticky.

  36. User avatar melita.kemmer says:

    5 stars
These are just like the ones I loved as a kid! So easy to make!

  37. User avatar Death Hound says:

    3 stars
I just don’t think tater tots are worth the effort. Can’t I just buy them frozen? 🤷‍♂️

  38. User avatar manual.murray says:

    4 stars
Good flavor—garlic/onion powder is the move. Mine stuck a little when shaping, so next time I’ll lightly flour my hands. Still delicious though.

  39. User avatar golden.bode says:

    3 stars
I followed it but mine fell apart a bit when flipping. I think I didn’t squeeze enough moisture out—next time I’ll be more aggressive with the towel.

  40. 2 stars
Not gonna lie, 2 cups of oil feels like a lot. I used less and they didn’t brown as nicely. Maybe it’s just my pan, idk.

    1. User avatar julee.bogisich says:

      4 stars
I felt the same at first, but 2 cups is basically for coverage plus enough depth so they don’t steam. If your pan runs shallow, you’ll lose that nice browning.
