Grilled Bratwurst

May 20, 2025

Grilled bratwurst is a simple and delicious dish, perfect for a barbecue or a casual dinner. This recipe will guide you through the process of grilling savory sausages to perfection.

Grilled Bratwurst is the most wanted grilled meal this summer!

What is bratwurst?

Bratwurst is a type of German sausage typically made from pork, beef, or veal. It’s seasoned with a blend of spices such as nutmeg, caraway, ginger, or coriander and is either grilled, pan-fried, or simmered.

How is bratwurst different from other sausages?

Unlike some sausages that are smoked or dried, bratwurst is usually fresh and must be cooked before eating. It also has a distinct seasoning profile and often uses a coarser grind of meat.

How is bratwurst traditionally cooked?

It’s typically grilled or pan-fried, often after being simmered in beer or broth to enhance flavor and juiciness.

Do I need to boil bratwurst before grilling?

Boiling is not necessary but often recommended to ensure the sausage is cooked through evenly. Simmering in beer and onions before grilling is a popular method for added flavor and moisture.

What are traditional ways to serve bratwurst?

Bratwurst is commonly served in a bun with mustard and sauerkraut, or as part of a platter with potatoes, cabbage, or pretzels. In Germany, regional variations influence how it’s prepared and served.

What are the best toppings for bratwurst?

Classic toppings include mustard, sauerkraut, grilled onions, and pickles. In the U.S., it’s common to serve bratwurst in a bun like a hot dog.

Is bratwurst gluten-free?

Most traditional bratwursts are gluten-free, but always check the label or ask the butcher to confirm, especially if breadcrumbs or beer are included in the recipe

I used chicken bratwurst instead, turned out good… not as good as pork tho.

    1. 3 stars
Pork bratwurst is definitely the classic choice, but chicken can work too. Did you add anything else to it? Just curious!

    2. User avatar Wilton Gislason says:

      4 stars
Glad to hear it turned out good! Chicken bratwurst is a great alternative for those who want a leaner option. Just gotta keep trying until you find the best combo!

Grilled onions are the best part! Yum! Also sauerkraut is a must! ✨

    1. User avatar basementDweller says:

      3 stars
Onions are good but I’m telling you, ketchup is better than mustard! 😜

    2. 4 stars
I totally agree! Grilled onions add so much flavor! But sauerkraut? I’m not a fan myself. 🤷‍♂️

I don’t know… I feel like bratwurst should be boiled first. Is grilling legit?

    1. User avatar eddy.wisoky87 says:

      5 stars
Grilling is totally legit! Boiling just makes them soggy. Trust me, grilled bratwurst are way better!

  4. User avatar Mr. Berry Rosenbaum says:

    2 stars
Brats?! Where I’m from we eat hot dogs… this ain’t for us.

    1. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

      5 stars
Hot dogs are great too! But you gotta try brats, they’re way better on a grill! 😋

    2. User avatar Cammar Pilru says:

      2 stars
Ugh, I don’t know about this brat business… Sounds weird. Where’s the ketchup?

  5. 1 star
lol why do people need instructions for grilling sausages? Just throw ’em on the fire! 🔥

  6. User avatar alisia.donnelly says:

These bratwurst are just awesome! My family loved them. Will definitely make again.

  7. User avatar NAFO.SUPREMACY says:

Grilling onions is a must! Adds a nice sweetness to the bratwurst. Yummy!

    1. 5 stars
I totally agree! Grilled onions are the best! They make everything taste better. I always add extra, lol.

    2. User avatar Spriggan Matron says:

      3 stars
Grilling onions? Really? I never thought of that… sounds kinda odd to me but maybe worth a try?

Easiest recipe ever. I made these for my BBQ and everybody devoured them. Thanks!

  9. 3 stars
Wasn’t too impressed. The recipe just felt kinda plain with nothing special about it. Maybe try adding some spices?

  10. User avatar Arthur Philip Deodat says:

    1. User avatar Daqa Koth says:

      2 stars
Every weekend? Really? You won’t get tired of it? Kinda sounds boring after a while…

  11. 3 stars
Idk, I think this recipe is too simple. I need more flavors, like garlic or herbs.

  12. User avatar wellRespected says:

Bratwurst is overrated. I mean, it’s just sausage in a bun, right? 🤷‍♂️

    1. User avatar alvaro.weissnat38 says:

      5 stars
Just a sausage? You must’ve had some bad bratwurst! They can be so juicy and tasty if made right! 🔥

    2. User avatar Cammar Pilru says:

      4 stars
I get where you’re coming from, but there’s something special about the smoky flavor of grilled bratwurst. It’s just not the same as a regular sausage! 😋

  13. User avatar bennie.kuvalis65 says:

    5 stars
Sooo good!! I used spicy mustard and added jalapeños. Perfect for my BBQ!

  14. 2 stars
This is not how you make bratwurst! Real ones are boiled before grilling! Just saying!

  15. 5 stars
This recipe is awesome! Just like at the fair! Can’t wait to try it.

Absolutely loved it! The bratwurst turned out so juicy and flavorful. Will make again for sure!

  18. User avatar paige.nikolaus1987 says:

    2 stars
It was okay but I prefer my hot dogs. I guess I’m not a fan of bratwurst after all.

  19. User avatar lynnette.becker96 says:

    2 stars
Not a fan. The brats turned out dry. Maybe I overcooked them?

  20. User avatar roxanna.friesen1954 says:

    5 stars
My husband loved this recipe! He is a bratwurst fanatic. We added some spicy relish too. Just wow!

    1. User avatar buster.boyer says:

      2 stars
I don’t really get the hype. Tried making them once and they were so dry. What’s the secret?

    2. User avatar reinaldo.johns says:

      5 stars
So glad to hear that! Bratwurst is the best! Spicy relish sounds like a great addition!

  21. 3 stars
It was okay. The sausages were nice, but I forgot to add the onions and they looked a bit sad without them. Next time!

    1. User avatar suspiciousCommentator says:

      4 stars
Onions make everything better! Can’t believe you forgot them! But glad the sausages were nice!

    2. User avatar audria.leuschke1 says:

      3 stars
Yeah, that does sound a bit sad! But sausages are good any way! Grilling is the best!

  22. User avatar charmaine.heathcote says:

    3 stars
The instructions are clear, but I wish it said what internal temp to cook to. I grilled “until done” like it says, and it was okay, just not perfect.

    1. User avatar johnsie.welch14 says:

      5 stars
Yeah I get what you mean. “Until done” is vague—brats can be done on the outside way before they’re fully cooked. I always go by internal temp (like 160°F-ish for sausage) and then they come out way more consistent.

    2. User avatar Carrol Lehner says:

      3 stars
i usually just go by color too lol. if they look cooked and no pink, im happy. temps are nice but i dont got a thermometer, so this is fine

  23. User avatar Inga Reilly I says:

    3 stars
Why isn’t there cheese on this? Like I thought that was normal for bratwurst!

  24. User avatar pamela.schaefer93 says:

    5 stars
This is my go-to recipe for summer BBQs! The bratwurst turns out perfect every time.

  25. User avatar mitchel.leffler says:

    3 stars
Did I read that right? Only 20 minutes for all that cooking? Seems too quick.

  26. User avatar marlene.batz74 says:

    2 stars
Can you substitute with hotdogs? I dunno where to find bratwurst around here.

    1. User avatar noe.tromp says:

      4 stars
I think hotdogs could work, but they ain’t as good as bratwurst! Still, if that’s all you got, go for it! Just grill em the same way.

  27. User avatar Grandpa Gohan says:

    4 stars
I don’t like sauerkraut, but mustard is a must. Good recipe tho!

  28. User avatar merrill.hermiston1953 says:

    5 stars
My brother made these last week, and they were rly good! I was surprised.

    1. User avatar delcie.swift95 says:

      5 stars
Wow, they sound delicious! I’m definitely trying this out for my next BBQ!

  29. User avatar Ice Wraith says:

    2 stars
Why mustard AND sauerkraut? Seems too much tangy stuff. I swapped the sauerkraut for ketchup and it was… fine. Probably not authentic but I liked it.

    1. User avatar barbar.toy47 says:

      4 stars
Honestly, I get the concern—mustard + sauerkraut can be a lot of tang. But together they actually balance the richness of the bratwurst pretty well. If you want less bite, your ketchup swap makes sense.

  30. 4 stars
I like that it’s basically foolproof: grill, toast buns, add toppings. I might add a little relish too because… why not.

  31. User avatar clinton.lindgren says:

    1 star
Grill employ! I think I do it better. U ever tried grillin with beer? Super good!

  32. 3 stars
I swapped the hot dog buns for tortillas and it was weird but good!

  33. User avatar Noya Neha says:

    4 stars
The mustard + sauerkraut combo is doing the heavy lifting here. I skipped sauerkraut once and it felt… wrong, lol.

  34. 4 stars
Sounds easy enough. I’m gonna try but I might burn them 🤣.

  35. User avatar sergio.oberbrunner says:

    1 star
This ain’t real cooking, just throwin’ stuff on a grill. Bro, come on!!

  36. User avatar bonita.bradtke61 says:

    5 stars
This was absolutely delicious! The bratwurst turned out perfectly grilled and juicy. I will definitely be making these again!

    1. User avatar carman.schmidt13 says:

      2 stars
I don’t know, grillin’ bratwurst ain’t easy. Sometimes they get burn! Maybe not for me.

    2. User avatar rob.nitzsche58 says:

      5 stars
I agree! Bratwurst is amazing when grilled! I’ve tried this recipe, and my family loved it too!

  37. 2 stars
Meh, not a fan of bratwurst. I prefer hot dogs! But guess it could be good for others.

  38. User avatar aletha.koepp1972 says:

    5 stars
This recipe is a hit at my BBQs! Everyone loved it! 😊

  39. 5 stars
5 stars! BBQ vibes were on point. Made these for the game night and they were a hit.

    1. User avatar leida.kutch63 says:

      5 stars
Awesome to hear! Game nights are way better with good food. Will definitely try this recipe!

  40. User avatar Daedric Prince says:

    2 stars
Not my favorite. I prefer my hot dogs boiled. Grilling made ’em taste too smoky. But the mustard was good.

  41. User avatar keira.strosin75 says:

    4 stars
Tasted great! But be careful when grilling, I burned my first batch 😅. Love the sauerkraut addition!

  42. 4 stars
20 minutes feels a little long? My sausages usually take less, but maybe it depends on thickness. Still, they cooked through so no complaints.

  43. 4 stars
Grillin’ isn’t a science! Just throw dem sausages on the fire and see what happens! 😂

    1. 5 stars
Haha, you’re right! It’s all about the fun! Can’t mess up a good sausage! 🎉

  44. User avatar sarai.ruecker1970 says:

    4 stars
20 minutes seems about right, but mine took closer to 25 because the sausages were thick. Still turned out great though.

  45. 3 stars
The instructions are clear, but “medium-high” is vague. My grill runs hot, so I had to lower it halfway.

    1. User avatar Spider Worker says:

      5 stars
Yeah, “medium-high” is definitely vague. I usually treat it as “hot enough to brown but not flame up,” so your adjustment makes sense—turning it down halfway is smart if your grill runs hot.

  46. 3 stars
Tried it but the bratwurst was too greasy for my taste. Maybe I did something wrong?

    1. User avatar lawrence.zemlak says:

      3 stars
I dunno, mine weren’t greasy at all. Are you using a different brand? Maybe you could try grilling them for less time?

    2. User avatar Lonny Hilpert says:

      4 stars
I love bratwurst but yeah, they can be greasy sometimes. Make sure to check the fat content next time! Maybe try a leaner sausage? 😅

  47. 5 stars
    YUMMY!!!

    1. User avatar Hotblack Desiato says:

      5 stars
I totally agree! Nothing beats a bratwurst on the grill. 😋

  48. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

    4 stars
Grilling these babies is the best! I added some peppers too, and yumm!

  49. User avatar Marlon Heller says:

    2 stars
Tasty, but I’m confused on why grilled onions are included? Seems unnecessary.

    1. 5 stars
Grilled onions are awesome! They add sweetness and flavor to the bratwurst. You might like it once you try them.

    2. User avatar dorthey.rath1968 says:

      2 stars
I don’t really get it either, seems like a waste of time. Just eat the sausage and bun.

  50. User avatar Dwarven Centurion says:

    2 stars
Meh. 20 minutes is random. Also, I don’t have a grill—can you air fry? or is it gonna explode lol

  51. User avatar simona.cruickshank1993 says:

    2 stars
Why would you put sauerkraut on a hot dog? That’s just wrong!

  52. User avatar micheal.weimann88 says:

    1 star
    Needs ketchup. That is all.

  53. 5 stars
This recipe is fantastic! The bratwurst came out so juicy! Will definitely make again.

  54. 4 stars
I tried this but my bratwurst took closer to 25–30 minutes. Maybe my sausages were thicker. Still came out juicy though, and the toasted buns were a win.

  55. User avatar lucina.schiller says:

    4 stars
I don’t like sauerkraut, but this still was pretty good. Used salsa instead. Yum!

  56. 4 stars
Pretty good! I like how simple it is. Next time I might parboil the onions first though, they took longer than my sausages to get right.

  57. User avatar eladia.champlin says:

    3 stars
These were okay, but I wanted more flavor. I think I would’ve added peppers or a splash of beer/sauteed onion. Still, simple enough.

  58. User avatar melania.farrell says:

    2 stars
meh. not bad, but i expected more flavor. maybe i need better sausages.

  59. User avatar migdalia.bradtke13 says:

    4 stars
I’m not a huge sauerkraut person, so I skipped it. The mustard + grilled onion combo still tasted awesome.

    1. User avatar tianna.schuppe29 says:

      5 stars
Honestly that sounds perfect—mustard and grilled onions are doing all the heavy lifting. If you’re not into sauerkraut, skipping it is totally fine.

  60. User avatar tillie.douglas says:

    3 stars
Do you have to grill them? I don’t have a grill, can I just bake them in the oven?

  61. User avatar antonetta.bruen says:

    3 stars
Why not boil them first to make sure they cook through? The grill-only method feels a little risky.

    1. User avatar sherman.leannon15 says:

      4 stars
I get the worry, but if you grill at medium-high and keep an eye on time, they usually cook through just fine. Boiling can make them less snappy and more watery on the grill. I’d rather grill and cut one open to check for doneness.

  62. User avatar Tricia McMillan says:

    3 stars
I didn’t preheat the grill and they took longer. Should’ve read the instructions better!

    1. 4 stars
It’s all good! We all learn from our mistakes. Hope they still turned out tasty!

    2. 2 stars
You should’ve known better! Always preheat, that’s basic cooking.

  63. 2 stars
Not bad, but the measurements feel off—like 1/4 cup mustard for 4 sausages? I ended up using way more because mustard is life. Also buns need longer to toast.

  64. User avatar rafaela.paucek says:

    5 stars
I tried this and my kids loved it! The onions add a nice touch. Thanks for sharing!

  65. User avatar mack.leffler37 says:

    2 stars
I’m skeptical. Sauerkraut optional sounds like you either go all in or don’t. Also, should I pierce the bratwurst? Mine split a little, oops.

    1. 4 stars
Honestly I don’t pierce them. If you do, all the juice leaks out and they get dry. Your split is probably just the casing being kinda weird. Next time, maybe medium heat and don’t rush it—20 mins sounds right. Sauerkraut is fine but not “required” like people act.

    2. 5 stars
I get the skepticism, but sauerkraut really isn’t mandatory—think of it as an optional tang boost. I’ve done these with just mustard + onions and they’re still great. Also, if your brat split a bit, that’s not the end of the world—just don’t pierce them more than you have to.

  66. User avatar Jaime Hoppe says:

    5 stars
    5 stars. Seriously.

  67. User avatar giuseppe.walter43 says:

    4 stars
This seemed too simple. I added some spices and cheese to the bratwurst, made it way better!

    1. User avatar bryant.thiel3 says:

      4 stars
I like your twist! Spices really take it up a notch. What did you add?

  68. 5 stars
Simple and hits the spot. I like that it doesn’t overcomplicate the bratwurst—just grill and build the classic toppings.

  69. 1 star
hot dogs r better, bratwurst is too fancy for me lol

  70. User avatar Arthur Philip Deodat says:

    4 stars
Could someone swap sauerkraut for pickles? I don’t like that stuff.

  71. User avatar lorretta.smitham says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, I’m lazy so I skipped the sauerkraut… still tasted great. Next time I’ll try it though because people don’t hype it for no reason.

  72. User avatar clark.rippin says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about grilling sauerkraut. But the onions + mustard combo really hits. Next time I’ll add a little relish too.

    1. User avatar sung.keebler says:

      5 stars
Okay I’m glad you tried it—sauerkraut on a brat is so much better than it sounds. The mustard + onion combo is the whole move. Relish next time is genius too!

    2. 2 stars
I dunno… grilling sauerkraut seems like it would turn weirdly salty and soggy. Maybe just warm it separately? But if you say the mustard helps, I might test it once.

  73. 3 stars
Medium-high for 20 minutes on the grill feels long? My sausages usually take like 10-15, but maybe mine are smaller. Still, sounds tasty and the toasted buns are a nice touch.

  74. User avatar Emily Saunders says:

    4 stars
Yo, 20 minutes is forever 😭 but it worked. Mustard amount felt right. I didn’t have buns so I used whatever rolls—still good!

  75. User avatar viki.bernhard says:

    5 stars
Made this tonight and it was spot on—20 minutes gave me that nice browned exterior without splitting the sausages. The grilled onion + mustard combo is elite.

  76. 2 stars
Grilled mine too long… like 30 min oops. They were still edible but not as juicy. Either my grill runs hot or I got distracted.

  77. 3 stars
Grilled onions with bratwurst is a yes. However, I think 1/4 cup mustard is too much for 4 sausages—spilled everywhere.

    1. User avatar Galaxia Woonbeam says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—1/4 cup mustard for just 4 sausages sounds like a whole condiment flood. I usually do like 2–3 tablespoons and save the rest for dipping.

  78. User avatar Issac Lakin says:

    2 stars
Where’s the ketchup? Mustard ain’t enough! But okay, still good I guess.

    1. User avatar sammie.torphy98 says:

      5 stars
I agree! Ketchup would make it perfect! Mustard is nice but ketchup adds a sweet tang that’s hard to beat.

    2. 2 stars
Who eats bratwurst with ketchup? It’s all about the mustard! But maybe try it sometime?

  79. User avatar sonny.blanda32 says:

    5 stars
    Easy and tasty!

    1. User avatar w00d_ch0p says:

      5 stars
Agreed—this one’s super straightforward. The timing’s pretty forgiving too. 👍

    2. User avatar elma.morissette80 says:

      4 stars
I tried it but my bratwurst took like 30 min? Still good though, and the mustard + kraut combo slaps.

  80. User avatar roman.oreilly1957 says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but “medium-high” is vague. Mine burned before fully cooked, so I had to finish slower. Maybe temp would help.

  81. User avatar antonia.heaney1966 says:

    5 stars
I tried this recipe, and it was amazing! The bratwurst were perfectly grilled. Thanks!

  82. User avatar Spriggan Matron says:

    3 stars
Mine came out a little dry because my grill ran hot. I think medium-high is important—don’t blast them like I did 😅

  83. User avatar bailey.sauer says:

    4 stars
I followed it pretty much exactly. 20 minutes felt a little long on my grill, but they came out juicy. Toasted buns were a nice touch.

I didn’t have a grill, so I cooked them on the stove. Still tasted good! Thanks!

I’m not sure about putting sliced onion right on the grill—mine got bitter. Tasted ok with more mustard though.

    1. User avatar scotty.armstrong41 says:

That’s fair—onions can go bitter if they char too hard or cook too long. I’ve found medium heat works better, and slice them a bit thicker so they soften instead of burning. Also, grilling the onion briefly (or even in a foil packet) can help a lot.

Super easy and delicious! I added some cheese to the bratwurst, yumm!

  87. 3 stars
Grillin bratwurst is the best, but y’all need to be careful not to burn them!

      5 stars
Absolutely! There’s nothing worse than a burnt bratwurst. Gotta keep an eye on those bad boys!

  88. 4 stars
I followed it but my sausages took longer than 20 minutes. Still delicious though—juicy and the buns toasted perfectly. Next time I’ll start checking earlier.

  89. User avatar Darmani III says:

    3 stars
Pretty good, but I think the grilling time was off. Mine were a bit burnt.

Bratwurst and mustard are literally heart! Gotta try with onions next time!

  91. 5 stars
Super simple and it actually tastes right. The onions on the grill add that sweet-char vibe—10/10 for a weeknight.

  92. User avatar Hasimir Fenring says:

    4 stars
Quick and tasty. 1-2 mins on the buns is perfect—any longer and they burn fast. My family devoured them immediately, lol.

YUM! We love bratwurst in my family! So easy and delish!

Grilled sausages? What’s so special ’bout that? I’m skeptical about these fancy ingredients.

  95. 5 stars
Best part was the onion—soft, smoky, and not bitter. I used spicy mustard and it kicked. Very simple recipe, big payoff.

  96. User avatar paige.pouros says:

Didn’t have bratwurst, so used hot dogs instead. Still turned out great, but I mean, come on.

    1. 4 stars
Glad it still turned out good! Hot dogs can be a fun twist. 🌭

  97. User avatar miriam.ledner says:

I followed it exactly and the results were amazing. Quick and affordable too. My family asked for seconds. Actually, one person said it was “better than the bar.”

  98. 3 stars
I’m skeptical about “medium-high” because grills vary so much. Also, do the brats need to be pre-pricked or no? I ended up guessing and they were fine.

Tried this tonight—20 minutes was spot on. The onion with a little char is such a game changer. I used spicy mustard and it really popped.

    1. User avatar Ms. Carroll Brakus says:

      5 stars
Yes!! The charred onion really is the whole thing. Glad 20 minutes worked for you—mine usually lands right around there too.

    2. User avatar Tricia McMillan says:

      3 stars
I tried this but my onions burned quick 😅 maybe my grill runs hotter. Also I didn’t have sauerkraut—still tasty though. How do you keep the timing so perfect?

  100. User avatar Deep Thought says:

I tried this but the bratwurst burned on the grill…not sure if it was my grill or the time. Maybe less time next time?

  101. User avatar arlene.carroll45 says:

Just mustard and sauerkraut? Where’s the pickle/relish? It’s missing the full classic vibe in my opinion.

  102. User avatar aja.kerluke41 says:

Best brat method I’ve found on here. The buns toasted on the grill are 🔥. I did onions and sauerkraut and it tasted like a summer fair.

    1. User avatar Loonquawl and Phouchg says:

      5 stars
Agreed—grilling the buns really makes it. The onion + sauerkraut combo is perfect with bratwurst. I’m stealing “summer fair” as the description 😂

I followed it exactly and my buns got too crispy, lol. Next time I’ll toast for like 45 seconds.

    1. User avatar tameika.schimmel0 says:

      4 stars
Oh no—too crispy happens! Your 45 seconds next time sounds spot on. I’ve noticed buns toast way faster than the sausages once the grill really heats up.

    Yummy!!

  105. User avatar celestina.casper61 says:

This looks so simple and perfect for a weeknight cookout. The 20 minutes tip works—my snarky grill usually over-browns everything, but turning occasionally helped!

  106. 3 stars
Mine split on the grill (maybe the grill was too hot). Flavor was good, but it looked messy. Still ate them all lol.

  107. User avatar Grìma Wormtongue says:

    3 stars
Not gonna lie, 20 minutes feels long for “medium-high.” I pulled mine a bit early and they were juuuust cooked, but the buns got perfect anyway.

  108. User avatar leif.leannon63 says:

Hot dog buns worked fine, but I think softer rolls would be better. Still delicious.

    1. User avatar fannie.bode2022 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—those buns got the job done, but softer rolls would soak up the mustard/onion juice way better. Glad it was still delicious though!

    2. User avatar Pete Moss says:

      3 stars
Huh, I used regular hot dog buns and they got way too crisp for me 😅 Next time I’ll try softer rolls. Also, do you toast the buns right before serving or like early?

Grilled sausages are always a win! Never tried them with sauerkraut tho, sounds weird!

    1. User avatar nikole.botsford25 says:

      5 stars
Sauerkraut on sausages is actually really good! You should give it a try! It adds a nice tangy flavor. Trust me!

  110. 4 stars
Simple and honestly better than I expected. I didn’t have sauerkraut, but the onions and mustard still worked great. Would make again for sure.

  111. User avatar zachary.stamm says:

Not sure why people love sauerkraut so much… but it actually went really well with the charred onion. Tangy with the savory bratwurst. Would do again.

  112. User avatar javier.runolfsson1957 says:

Not gonna lie, I’m skeptical about the sauerkraut being optional—optional means I’m probably forgetting it 😅. But mustard + charred onion sounds legit.

  113. 5 stars
This recipe is amazing! The bratwurst turned out so juicy and delicious. Definitely a 5-star for me!

    1. User avatar kristan.abbott says:

I totally agree! These bratwursts were the best I’ve ever made. Thanks for sharing!

    2. User avatar Anju's Mother says:

Really? I found them kinda dry. Maybe I cooked ’em too long. But I guess tastes vary!

  114. User avatar dennis.romaguera75 says:

I tried this tonight and wow—juicy brats with that charred onion are the move. I used spicy mustard and it actually balanced the richness perfectly.

  115. User avatar bernie.gerhold77 says:

    4 stars
Pretty solid and easy. My only note: 20 minutes felt a bit long on my grill, so I’d watch for doneness instead of strictly the timer.

  116. User avatar Rachal Ferry IV says:

    3 stars
My buns burned in like 40 seconds 😭. I should’ve watched better. The brats were great once I adjusted the heat, so I’d say this is a solid recipe with grill vigilance.

    1. User avatar leonie.cremin91 says:

      4 stars
Oof, 40 seconds is brutal 😭 but yeah—grill timing can be sneaky. I always keep the buns super close to the heat and watch them like a hawk. Glad the brats still turned out great once you adjusted the temp!

  117. 5 stars
These bratwurst directions are super straightforward. Grilling 20 minutes on medium-high worked great for me—nice browning and not burnt. The toasted buns step is clutch.

    1. User avatar Cave Bear says:

      5 stars
Yes! Exactly this. I did 20 min and the browning was perfect—juicy inside. The toasted buns really do make a difference.

    2. User avatar CTRLplusW says:

      3 stars
I tried medium-high but mine split and got a little burnt on the outside… maybe my grill runs hotter? Still, the mustard + sauerkraut combo was awesome.

  118. User avatar Gormlaith says:

    5 stars
Classic and simple—20 minutes seems about right for bratwurst. The onion + sauerkraut combo is undefeated. I’ll definitely try it with spicy mustard.

  119. User avatar terminatorXYZ says:

    3 stars
Hot dog buns worked, but I think I’ll use proper brat buns next time. Also, 1/4 cup mustard feels like a lot for me—spreading is tricky.

    1. User avatar luke.stracke1978 says:

      5 stars
Totally get that—mustard can get messy fast. I usually start with like 1–2 tablespoons and add more after taste. Brat buns would probably hold up better too!

    2. 3 stars
The mustard amount seems fine to me, but spreading tricky could be the type of mustard? If it’s super thick I warm it a lil or mix with a tiny splash of water. Also I always use regular hot dog buns 😂 they cook the same.
