Chicken Italiano is a delicious, comforting dish packed with the rich flavors of Italy. Tender chicken breasts are simmered in a savory sauce of tomatoes, garlic, and herbs, then topped with gooey melted cheese. This dish is easy to prepare and brings together the best of Italian-inspired comfort food. Chicken plays an important role in Italian cuisine, offering versatility, flavor, and comfort across a variety of regional dishes.
The heart of Chicken Italiano is the sauce – a flavorful blend of veggies, herbs like basil, oregano, and a hint of red pepper flakes for a subtle kick. As the chicken simmers in this savory mixture, it becomes juicy and infused with aromatic Italian flavors. The sauce reduces slightly, becoming thick and rich, perfect for spooning over pasta, rice, or roasted vegetables. The result is a hearty, satisfying dish that’s both rustic and elegant.
Chicken Italiano is incredibly versatile. Serve it over spaghetti for a classic pairing, alongside garlic bread and a crisp salad, or with roasted potatoes for a comforting, filling meal. You can also customize it by adding olives, mushrooms, or bell peppers to the sauce for extra flavor and texture.
This dish is perfect for busy weeknights when you want something quick yet delicious or for weekend dinners when you’re in the mood for homemade comfort. Chicken Italiano offers that perfect combination of savory, cheesy, and saucy that everyone loves. It’s simple, satisfying, and guaranteed to become a family favorite.
While chicken isn’t traditionally paired with pasta in authentic Italian cooking (despite its popularity in Italian-American recipes), it’s often served alongside risottos, polenta, or roasted potatoes. Its mild flavor allows it to absorb the rich flavors of sauces, herbs, and wines beautifully.
Overall, chicken in Italian cuisine represents comfort, simplicity, and a deep respect for fresh, high-quality ingredients. Whether grilled, braised, baked, or fried, chicken continues to be a beloved choice in kitchens throughout Italy.

Not sure about this one. Seemed bland to me but my wife liked it.
Didnt have white wine so used apple juice instead. Tasted kinda sweet but still nice!
Capers and white wine is brave lol. I was skeptical, but it actually made the pan sauce taste more complex than I expected. The whole thing smelled amazing while it was cooking.
I’m with you—capers + white wine sounds kinda wild, but it does make the sauce taste deeper. I tried it once and now I’m sold. 😄
Capers in wine? Uh ok lol. I used more lemon juice than called for and it was a bit too tangy for me… but the smell while cooking really does slap. Next time I’ll measure better.
easy peasy! I subbed the wine for chicken broth and it still turned out great! <3
Delicious! But I forgot the capers—still tasted good tho! Next time I’ll remember.
Can I use a different kinda wine? I don’t have white wine, only red. Will it ruin it?
I think red wine would totally change the flavor, but if you’re in a pinch, give it a shot! Might be different but who knows, it could be tasty!
Absolutely loved this recipe! The chicken turned out so juicy. Will make it again!
Made this last night—super crispy coating and the sauce tasted bright and fancy. I used lemon zest too and it was even better. 10/10 for a quick weeknight upgrade.
Didn’t have capers, so I used olives instead. Tasted fine but not Italian, you know? 😂
This dish was so good! I added a bit of garlic and it made it perfect. Will definitely make again.
Not sure about the artichokes; they were a bit weird for me. The chicken turned out okay, though.
Whaaat? You don’t like artichokes? They’re like, the best! 🤷♂️ Chicken is alright, but artichokes are life!
I totally get you! Artichokes can be a bit funky for some people. But I thought they added a nice flavor. Glad the chicken turned out okay for you!
I dunno, it just didn’t work for me. The wine was too strong maybe? I might try it without.
This recipe was a hit! My family loved it. I added a bit of garlic for extra flavor!
too hard to make!! I do not have patience for all the steps ugh. Ends up takeing me forever.
I like bold flavors, so I really enjoyed the briny capers. Only thing: I found it a bit tangy—maybe because I used bottled lemon juice. Next time I’ll go lighter on that.
Totally agree—capers make it pop! I’ve also noticed bottled lemon juice can taste sharper than fresh, so “lighten up” is a good call.
Interesting—mine was tangy too but I thought it was the white wine, not the lemon. Next time I’ll try fresh lemon or maybe reduce both? Also, how much lemon juice do you use?
Looks easy. I will try it tonight.
Uh “cut chicken diagonally into 1/4-inch pieces” sounds kinda hard 😂 I might just cut it normal strips. Also, do we add flour + breadcrumbs for the coating or just flour then egg then crumbs?
Nice—this does look pretty doable for a weeknight. I’d just make sure the chicken pieces aren’t too thick so they cook through evenly.
Love it! Simple but very delicious!
is it really italian? zest lemon would be betta! just saying!
Y’all, I burnt the chicken. Maybe I need a cooking class. But the sauce was good, so there’s that.
We’ve all been there! At least the sauce was a win! Maybe just keep an eye on the chicken next time. Cooking is all about practice! 😊
This was delicious! My family loved it. Definitely a keeper!
Fast and easy! Great for a weekday dinner. Thanks for sharing!
You’re welcome! I’m glad you found it easy. Do you have any tips for making it even better?
Yummy! I added some mushrooms because we had some left over. Came out real nice!
This was ok, but I think it needed more spices. Kinda bland for us.
Soo good! 😍 Even my picky eater kid loved it! I’ll definitely keep this in my recipe book.
Looks good, but my kid hates artichokes. Can I leave them out?
I’m glad to hear that! It’s always a win when the picky eaters enjoy it too. 😄
1/2 cup flour and 1/2 cup breadcrumbs—pretty heavy for two chicken breasts in my opinion. I liked the crunch, but it felt like there was too much breading on some bites. Would likely reduce by like 1/4 cup next time.
Yum!! I added garlic and it was amazing. Wish I could give it a 10!
Garlic is always a good idea! Makes everything better. 🧄
Kinda bland! Needs more flavor. Maybe more lemon juice or something.
I used chicken thighs instead and it turned out amazing! Better tasting than breasts for sure!
This recipe is missing something… maybe some garlic? Just feels bland.
I totally agree! Garlic would make this dish pop! I always add it for extra flavor.
Bland? Really? I think it’s fine as is. Sometimes less is more, ya know?
Is it supposed to be this oily? 🙄
Yeah, it seems like quite a bit of oil. Maybe try using less next time?
I dunno, it seemed awfully complicated just for chicken. I might stick to my usual recipes.
Nah, looks too much work for me. I rather just grill it and keep it simple. You can still make it taste great without all that hassle!
I can see where you’re coming from! Sometimes simpler is better. But this chicken dish really packs a punch with flavors! Maybe give it a try once? 😊
Can you really call this Italian? Where’s the garlic? Just doesn’t feel right!
Amazing! The flavors worked so well together, especially with the artichokes. Highly recommend!
Artichokes? Not sure about that… I think they ruin the chicken flavor. Might try it without.
I totally agree! The artichokes really elevate this dish. Can’t wait to make it again!
It was okay-ish. I didn’t have artichokes so I used mushrooms instead. Not sure if I did it right.
Mushrooms sound like a nice twist! I think it can still work. Just make sure they’re cooked well before adding them to the dish! 😄
Not having the right ingredients can mess things up! 😕 But mushrooms might not give the same flavor. Maybe try it again with artichokes next time?
Yummm!!! My kids loved it! I used chicken thighs instead and still turned out yummy! 🍽️
Glad your kids loved it! Chicken thighs are super juicy, great choice! I’ll have to try that too! 😊
I dunno, but chicken thighs feel kinda greasy to me. Did they really taste that good? 🤔
Eh, I expected more. My chicken was too dry. Maybe overcooked it?
I think you might have cooked it too long. Chicken can dry out fast! Try reducing the cooking time next time. Hope it turns out better!
Overcooked? Nah, maybe you just need some more sauce or butter to keep it moist? Just my thoughts!
This recipe is awesome! Chicken perfecto ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Angel hair pasta with this? Yes please. I used capers and they basically made it taste like restaurant food. Lemon juice also helps cut through the richness.
Really? Fried chicken with wine? Sounds fancy but just chicken and artichokes? Not sold on this recipe.
Not bad at all. I followed most of it, but my chicken pieces were too big since I didn’t cut them thin enough. Sauce was great though—would definitely try again with thinner cutlets.
I think chicken too big is the whole problem, but also you might be over-breading? Mine came out ok though. Sauce really good—capers are the move.
Thanks! And yeah, those pieces make a huge difference—1/4-inch is key. Next time you’ll be golden 😄
