Traditional Shepherd’s Pie

September 4, 2024

Traditional Shepherd’s Pie is the ultimate comfort food, a dish that brings warmth and satisfaction with every bite. This traditional recipe features tender ground lamb (or beef, if preferred), a mix of vegetables, and a creamy layer of mashed potatoes, all baked together until golden and bubbling. It’s the kind of meal that’s both filling and flavorful, making it perfect for family dinners, casual gatherings, or meal prepping for the week.

The foundation of Traditional Shepherd’s Pie is the savory filling. Ground lamb, cooked with onions, carrots, and peas, provides a rich, meaty base that is hearty and satisfying. The mixture is simmered in a savory gravy made from broth, herbs, and a touch of Worcestershire sauce, giving the filling a depth of flavor. The meat and vegetables come together in perfect harmony, with the earthy richness of the lamb complementing the sweetness of the carrots and the slight freshness of the peas.

The mashed potatoes are the crowning glory of this dish. Creamy, buttery, and smooth, they’re spread generously over the top of the meat filling, creating a comforting layer that holds everything together. As the pie bakes, the top of the potatoes becomes golden brown and slightly crispy, offering a delightful contrast to the tender filling beneath. For an extra touch of richness, some grated cheese can be sprinkled on top before baking, giving the pie an extra layer of flavor and a beautiful golden finish.

Shepherd’s Pie is a versatile dish that can easily be customized to your tastes. You can swap the lamb for ground beef for a Cottage Pie variation, or add extra vegetables like corn or mushrooms for added flavor. This dish is perfect for leftovers as the flavors continue to develop, and it’s a meal that everyone will love. Whether served with a side of salad or enjoyed on its own, Shepherd’s Pie is a classic that never goes out of style.

Meh, it was okay, but the name is misleading. Not what I expected from a shepherd’s pie.

I think it’s called ‘shepherd’s pie’ more for the appeal than accuracy. But I guess it could’ve been better.

I made this last night and it was a disaster. The tater tots got all mushy. Not trying this again. ⭐

    1. User avatar gavin.paucek72 says:

Mushy tater tots? Yikes! I actually love this recipe. You just gotta be careful with the microwave! Maybe try just baking them? 🤷‍♂️

    2. User avatar ArabianNights says:

      3 stars
Oh no! That sounds frustrating. Maybe the tater tots were overcooked? I’ve had that happen before. Try baking them a little less next time!

Cheddar is better than mozzarella! Change it up! ⭐⭐⭐

    1. 3 stars
I don’t know, mozzarella is pretty good. But some people like cheddar, I guess. Whatever works!

I think your dog just has bad taste. This recipe is actually really good and super easy! Don’t blame the food for your pup’s pickiness.

Isn’t shepherd’s pie usually made with lamb? I feel like this is just a tater tot casserole.

    1. User avatar jeramy.rau says:

      4 stars
You’re right, traditionally it’s made with lamb, but this sounds like a delicious twist! I think it’ll still be tasty!

  11. User avatar carma.wintheiser70 says:

    3 stars
I tried this but it was a bit greasy. Maybe less sausage next time?

I dunno about using tater tots…. isn’t that kinda cheating? But I guess it’s cheap!

  15. 4 stars
Sounds good but can someone please tell me if I can use beef instead of sausage? 🤔

  16. 2 stars
I don’t understand why you’d use spaghetti sauce in a Shepherd’s Pie? Isn’t that for pasta?

    1. User avatar imelda.okon12 says:

      5 stars
Why not? Spaghetti sauce tastes good! Plus, it’s cheap and easy. That’s the whole point of this recipe, right?

    2. User avatar travis.oconnell19 says:

      4 stars
I get your confusion! But it’s actually a fun twist! The sauce adds flavor and moisture, making it different from traditional recipes. Give it a shot!

  17. User avatar kirk.cummerata says:

    3 stars
I dunno, calling it ‘Shepherd’s Pie’ is kinda misleading. Shepherd’s Pie is made with lamb… just saying.

  18. User avatar kami.erdman95 says:

    2 stars
Meh… too much cheese for my liking. And spaghetti sauce? I thought shepherd’s pie was supposed to be savory, not sweet.

  23. 3 stars
So easy! I just dumped everything together because I’m lazy. It turned out alright.

    1. User avatar hilma.wuckert says:

      2 stars
Dumping stuff together doesn’t sound right… Did you even follow the recipe? Might not taste as good as if you actually cooked it properly. Just saying!

    2. User avatar Orange Dartwing says:

      4 stars
I can’t believe you just dumped it all in! 😂 But hey, if it turned out alright, who am I to judge? I’m all for laziness in the kitchen if it tastes good!

  24. 4 stars
Yum! My husband loved it and we can do it real quick. Thanks for sharing!

  25. User avatar glennis.schumm52 says:

    3 stars
I dunno, I think it’s missing something. Maybe some spices? Just felt kinda bland..

    1. 4 stars
I think adding some Italian herbs would really elevate the flavors! Basil, oregano? Just a suggestion!

  26. 5 stars
I made this for dinner last night. So good and so filling! Will definitely make it again.

  27. User avatar steffanie.bins43 says:

    4 stars
It turned out nice! I used ground beef instead and added some peas too. Didn’t have tater tots tho, so I used mashed potatoes. Still yummy.

  28. 5 stars
The cheese just makes everything better. I say a 5! But maybe less sauce next time.

    1. 5 stars
Totally agree! Cheese makes everything better! But too much sauce can be messy. This sounds delish!

  29. 3 stars
Ain’t shepherd’s pie supposed to have like, potatoes not taters?? When I was a kid, we made it from scratch. But this is easy, I guess.

    1. 4 stars
Potatoes or tater tots, who cares? This looks yummy! Just a different take on a classic, I guess.

  30. 3 stars
Too many steps for me. I thought it would be cheap, but buying all the stuff added up. Meh.

  31. 1 star
Waste of time! The whole thing fell apart when I served it. What a mess.

    1. 4 stars
I had no issues with it falling apart! Maybe you mixed it too much? It held together great for me.

    2. User avatar bobby.gislason48 says:

      1 star
This is garbage! It shudda had like more veggies or something. Can’t believe you wasted your time on this! #Fail

  32. 2 stars
I made this and the tater tots got too soggy. Maybe bake ’em first next time or so??? Idk… can someone confirm??

    1. User avatar Vladimir Harkonnen says:

      2 stars
Nah, I think it might just be how you cooked it. Mine turned out crispy. Maybe your oven is off??

    2. User avatar Charles Darwin says:

I had the same issue! Baking them first really helps! Try it out next time!

  33. User avatar kimi.nader13 says:

I’m not sure if this really counts as Shepherd’s Pie. Where’s the lamb? Just another casserole to me.

  34. User avatar alishia.mclaughlin says:

    3 stars
How many servings is this supposed to make? I think I made way too much for just me! It’s a lot. 🤷‍♀️

    1. User avatar allan.daniel0 says:

      5 stars
I think it should serve about 6? Just save the leftovers for later! 😊

  37. User avatar chun.schmeler says:

    4 stars
My wife didn’t like it but I thought it was fine. Not gourmet but it filled me up. I guess that’s good? 🤷‍♂️

    1. 2 stars
Honestly, I thought this recipe was kinda lame. It feels like a combo of leftovers… but I guess if it filled you up, that’s something?

    2. User avatar lowell.goldner says:

      5 stars
I totally get what you mean! It’s not fancy, but sometimes you just want something simple that fills you up. My husband loves it too – no complaints here!

  38. User avatar brant.von1974 says:

    2 stars
Too much cheese! I like cheese but dang! My heart hurt. 🙃

    1. 4 stars
I think the cheese is the best part! Maybe try less next time? 🤔

  39. User avatar milan.wintheiser says:

    2 stars
Lol, this is not authentic Shepards Pie at all! Where’s the lamb?!

    1. User avatar graig.hagenes73 says:

      4 stars
It’s not traditional, I agree! But it sounds intriguing. Sausage could be a fun twist!

  40. 3 stars
I always thought Shepherd’s Pie had lamb, is it really supposed to be with sausage? 🤔

  41. User avatar ross.grimes1991 says:

Eh, I don’t think I’ll be trying this. Looks too greasy for my taste.
