Easy Cheese Danish

June 8, 2026

Easy Cheese Danish is a delightful pastry that combines layers of flaky, golden dough with a rich and creamy sweet cheese filling. This bakery-style treat looks impressive but is surprisingly simple to make at home using a few basic ingredients. Whether you’re serving it for breakfast, brunch, a holiday gathering, or an afternoon snack, this easy recipe delivers delicious results with minimal effort.

One of the reasons cheese danishes are so popular is their perfect balance of textures and flavors. The buttery pastry provides a crisp and flaky exterior, while the cream cheese filling adds a smooth, slightly tangy sweetness that complements the pastry beautifully. A light glaze drizzled over the top adds the finishing touch, making each bite irresistible.

To make Easy Cheese Danish, start with refrigerated puff pastry or crescent roll dough, which saves time while still creating a light and flaky texture. Allow the pastry to thaw if needed and unfold it onto a lightly floured surface. Cut the dough into squares or rectangles, depending on your preferred shape.

For the filling, combine softened cream cheese, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and a small amount of lemon juice in a mixing bowl. Beat until smooth and creamy. Spoon the mixture into the center of each pastry piece, leaving a border around the edges. Fold or shape the dough as desired, making sure the filling remains visible in the center.

Brush the pastry edges with a beaten egg to help them achieve a beautiful golden color during baking. Place the danishes on a lined baking sheet and bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for 15 to 20 minutes, or until puffed and golden brown.

While the pastries cool slightly, prepare a simple glaze by mixing powdered sugar with a small amount of milk and vanilla extract. Drizzle the glaze over the warm danishes for extra sweetness and a professional bakery-style appearance.

Easy Cheese Danish can be customized with fruit toppings such as strawberries, blueberries, cherries, or peaches. You can also add a sprinkle of sliced almonds for additional texture and flavor.

These pastries are best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in the refrigerator and reheated before serving. Rich, flaky, and wonderfully creamy, Easy Cheese Danish is a simple recipe that brings the taste of a bakery right into your kitchen. It’s a crowd-pleasing treat that’s perfect for any occasion.

Yummy! 🤤 We used strawberry jam in the middle instead of cream cheese, still awesome!

Can you use something other than cream cheese? I can’t stand it, but I wanna try this recipe.

    1. User avatar florentino.heathcote says:

You could use ricotta cheese or maybe mascarpone instead! They can help achieve a similar texture and taste. Good luck!

It was okay, but I think I used too much cream cheese. 🤔

      4 stars
Maybe try reducing the cream cheese next time? It can overwhelm the other flavors. 😅

I dunno, cream cheese and puff pastry sounds weird. Are you sure it turned out good?

  22. 4 stars
Halfway through baking, I thought I messed up because the center looked too wet… then it set as it cooled. Weirdly comforting. Good recipe.

  23. User avatar oPandariaNo says:

    4 stars
Super easy for a weeknight treat. The instructions are clear, and the danishes looked bakery-level after baking.

  24. User avatar alphonso.kassulke1957 says:

    3 stars
Glaze made it way too sweet for me. I skipped the powdered sugar drizzle and they tasted more balanced. Otherwise recipe was solid.

  25. User avatar carson.anderson1955 says:

    2 stars
Mine came out kind of soggy in the middle. I wonder if thawing the pastry too long caused it? Still edible, just not pretty.

  26. User avatar denise.collier59 says:

    3 stars
Quick and decent. The cream cheese mix tasted a little bland until I added more vanilla and a pinch of salt. Also, my puff pastry didn’t get as puffy—probably my oven runs hot.

  27. User avatar Dan Streetmentioner says:

    5 stars
These are dangerously good. I used coarse sugar on top and the crunch is legit. Glaze was a must—5/5 comfort food.

  28. User avatar Zaphod Beeblebrox says:

    5 stars
    1 word: Delicious.

  29. User avatar Sandy Friesen says:

    3 stars
Not gonna lie, my squares wouldn’t really “fold” nicely. They kind of just sagged, and the filling spread. Still tasty, but maybe my pastry was too warm.

    1. User avatar kevin.luettgen says:

      4 stars
Ugh, I’m sorry—yeah that sounds like the filling got a little too loose for the way the folds were holding. I’ve found the biggest fix is to chill the cut pastry squares 10 minutes before filling so the puff pastry sets up faster in the oven.

    2. 5 stars
Maybe the puff was thawed too much? Mine get warm and then everything spreads. I let it thaw just until it’s flexible (still cool), and I use less filling—like only a small spoon in the center.

  30. User avatar hai.herzog says:

    3 stars
400°F seems kinda high… mine browned fast at 14 minutes. I’d recommend checking early if your oven is aggressive.

  31. User avatar emory.towne says:

    2 stars
I don’t get why you only bake 16–18 minutes. My filling wasn’t fully set by then. I had to bake like 25.

  32. User avatar CTRLplusW says:

    5 stars
    One word: perfect. 😅

  33. User avatar joe_banana says:

    3 stars
I love cheese danishes, but 400°F for only 16–18 minutes felt short. Mine were golden, yeah, but the center wasn’t fully set until I baked like 4 more minutes.

  34. User avatar zana.lowe10 says:

    3 stars
The filling is good, but mine spread a lot and leaked out. I might’ve overfilled or my cream cheese was too soft. Still delicious though.

    1. User avatar mi.littel15 says:

      5 stars
Good catch—puff pastry + soft filling can totally cause leaks. Next time I’d chill the cream cheese (or even the assembled pastries) so it holds its shape better, and try not to overfill.

  35. 4 stars
Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about cutting puff pastry into squares, but it worked. Mine are more “rustic” looking, but still golden and delicious.

    1. User avatar hildegarde.king38 says:

      4 stars
Weird question: do you thaw the puff pastry at room temp or in the fridge? Mine always gets too warm and then it won’t puff right.

    2. User avatar noel.turcotte25 says:

      5 stars
I love this—rustic is honestly the best look for cheese danishes 😄 Glad cutting into squares worked for you!

  36. User avatar darren.gleichner says:

    4 stars
This was my first time working with puff pastry and I was nervous. Easy instructions though—mine looked a little “rustic” but tasted amazing. Next time I’ll leave more filling exposed like the tip says.

  37. User avatar Gil Heidenreich says:

    4 stars
I forgot the lemon juice (because I’m forgetful) and they were still delicious. Maybe next time for extra zing.

  38. User avatar sherryl.collins says:

    4 stars
The recipe says “1 egg egg wash” and I almost laughed because it’s written kinda weird, but it worked. I brushed the edges and got a good golden color. Could’ve used more lemon, though.

    1. User avatar Margot Fenring says:

      4 stars
Honestly I thought it was a typo but your results make me feel better. Did you use coarse sugar on top or just the glaze? I usually go heavier on lemon for sure.

    2. User avatar gayla.huel11 says:

      5 stars
Haha I noticed the “egg egg wash” wording too—almost like the recipe was double-egg-ing itself 😄 Glad it worked! I agree, a little extra lemon juice would probably brighten it up a lot.

  39. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

    4 stars
My egg wash step was messy (I keep spilling water lol). Still, the pastry browned beautifully and the coarse sugar gave it a nice crunch.

  40. User avatar suspiciousCommentator says:

    1 star
I love danishes but this was kinda mid. The pastry was good, but the cream cheese flavor was a bit bland even with vanilla. Needs more lemon or salt.

  41. User avatar Master Yi says:

    2 stars
I tried to make the glaze but it turned grainy because I added milk too fast. Also, I didn’t have coarse sugar so I skipped topping. Without glaze it was kinda dry, honestly.

  42. User avatar jonell.bayer83 says:

    2 stars
Why the extra “1 egg egg wash 1 egg beaten with 1 tablespoon water”?? Is that a typo or did I miss something? I ended up just using one egg with water, but the recipe text was confusing.

  43. User avatar izetta.weimann1989 says:

    5 stars
Made these last night and they turned out way better than I expected. The filling is super creamy, and the puff pastry is perfectly golden. I added the lemon juice and it definitely wakes everything up.

  44. User avatar Deep Thought says:

    3 stars
The ingredient list has an extra ‘egg egg wash’ wording—confusing at first. But once I figured it out, it worked. Would make again.

    1. User avatar johnathon.reichel93 says:

      5 stars
Haha yes—I was like “egg egg wash??” too. I read it twice and realized it’s just 1 beaten egg + water. Turned out great, definitely making again!

  45. User avatar mathWizard says:

    4 stars
Mine spread a bit more than I expected, but still tasted amazing. Next time I’ll maybe use slightly less filling or chill the pastry longer.

    1. 5 stars
Mine did that too 😅—I think the filling is a little warm when it goes in. Chilling the pastry longer really helps it stay put. Still, glad yours tasted amazing!

  46. User avatar yong.dickinson says:

    2 stars
I’m skeptical about ‘easy’ Danish. Puff pastry is the only reason this worked. The filling was good but mine looked kinda messy—still ate them all, lol.

    1. User avatar chad.bailey says:

      4 stars
Mine looked awful too lol. I think I overfilled them and the egg wash made it spread. Still tasted great. Next time I’ll use less filling.

    2. User avatar rich.landlord says:

      4 stars
Honestly same—“easy” is doing a lot here 😅 Puff pastry is definitely the MVP. Your filling sounds legit though, messy or not.

  47. User avatar w00d_ch0p says:

    5 stars
These were dangerously easy. I used store-bought puff pastry and the filling stayed nice and thick—so good with the optional glaze. Mine came out a little darker at 18 minutes but still perfect.

  48. User avatar donette.schiller1951 says:

    5 stars
The egg wash step is key—without it, the tops didn’t look as shiny. Coarse sugar also gives a nice crunch.

    1. User avatar Aurelion Sol says:

      5 stars
100% agree about the egg wash. I skipped it once and they looked kinda dull—still tasted good though. Coarse sugar definitely adds that little crunch on top!

    2. User avatar Mrs. Christoper Prohaska says:

      3 stars
Interesting… I usually just brush with butter and it browns fine. Also 1 egg wash = 1 egg + 1 tbsp milk? I might be mixing it up. Either way my danishes are never shiny unless I overbake 😅

  49. User avatar oPandariaNo says:

    5 stars
These turned out super flaky and the filling stayed nice and thick. I added a bit more lemon juice and it tasted like bakery danish!

  50. User avatar neomi.greenholt says:

    5 stars
Tried these today—so easy and they came out golden and flaky. The cream cheese filling tastes exactly like a bakery danish. I did use the coarse sugar and it made a nice crunch.

  51. User avatar Alysa Nicolas says:

    4 stars
I’m skeptical of anything called “easy danish” because usually it’s a whole day project. This one surprised me. The puff pastry does a lot of the heavy lifting.

  52. User avatar yvonne.rippin says:

    4 stars
My puff pastry didn’t really “fold” nicely, but I just spooned the filling in the center and it still looked cute. Tasty!

  53. User avatar sammie.sauer37 says:

    4 stars
I’m skeptical puff pastry + cream cheese can be this good without more seasoning. But honestly? The vanilla and lemon balance it well. My family ate them before they cooled 😅

  54. User avatar MAGA2024.Trumpster says:

    3 stars
The cream cheese filling was great, but mine leaked a bit and the pastries looked messy. Could be my oven runs hot or I overfilled.

  55. User avatar oPandariaNo says:

    5 stars
Made these last weekend—so easy and way better than I expected from boxed puff pastry. The filling stayed creamy and the edges were perfectly golden.

    1. User avatar Milly Graham says:

      5 stars
Agreed! I tried these too and they totally beat the boxed stuff. My edges got *so* golden 😂 The filling stayed nice and creamy for me as well.

  56. User avatar halflife4 says:

    3 stars
I don’t know why but my egg wash didn’t really “stick” and the edges looked pale. Flavor was still good though.

  57. User avatar Uh Shenlong says:

    3 stars
I used low-fat cream cheese and the filling didn’t set quite right. Next time I’ll stick to regular cream cheese—lesson learned.

    1. 5 stars
That makes sense—low-fat cream cheese behaves so differently. I’ve had the same “it doesn’t really set” issue when I swap it out. Regular full-fat next time 👍

  58. 3 stars
I followed it pretty much, except I forgot the lemon juice (oops). Still tasted rich and good, but not as bright. Coarse sugar on top is a must.

  59. User avatar w00d_ch0p says:

    2 stars
One issue: the ingredient list says “1 egg egg wash 1 egg beaten with 1 tablespoon water” which is confusing. I used one egg total—maybe that’s fine?

    1. User avatar xavier.kassulke says:

      4 stars
Yeah, that ingredient line is definitely muddled. I’d assume it means: use 1 egg beaten with 1 tbsp water for the egg wash, and the “1 large egg” in the filling is separate.

    2. User avatar hwa.wolff30 says:

      4 stars
When I made these, I used 2 eggs total—one for the filling and one for the wash. Yours using only 1 egg might still work, but the edges won’t brown as nicely.

  60. User avatar Cyrstal Borer Jr. says:

    4 stars
I dunno, “easy” is relative 😂 Puff pastry is kinda expensive where I live. But I can’t complain—the texture is legit.

    1. 5 stars
Totally agree—“easy” depends on what your pantry budget looks like 😅 Puff pastry can be pricey, but the flaky texture is worth it for sure.

  61. 3 stars
The glaze was super runny for me even after mixing. I added more powdered sugar and it fixed it. Otherwise, good flavor.

  62. User avatar lewis.hoeger says:

    2 stars
1 tsp vanilla + lemon juice is too much for my taste. I’d reduce both next time or just do vanilla. Otherwise decent.

  63. User avatar florrie.schuster79 says:

    5 stars
Super easy for a “danish” situation. I used store-bought puff pastry and followed the timing—golden on top, set filling underneath.

  64. 4 stars
400°F seems high? I baked mine 16 minutes and it came out golden but slightly darker on the edges. Flavor was on point—just watch the oven.

    1. User avatar chance.tromp1975 says:

      4 stars
Idk 16 min sounds short to me 😅 My oven runs cool though. I’d try 18–20 and keep an eye on the filling setting—once it looks set, pull it. Also make sure your pastry is fully thawed, or it won’t puff right.

    2. User avatar joe_banana says:

      5 stars
400°F is right—puff pastry needs that hot start to really blow up. I usually do 14–16 min on the first batch too, and if the edges go too dark I just tent them with foil halfway through.

  65. User avatar elane.gibson says:

    3 stars
I think 400°F is a little too hot for my oven. Edges browned fast and centers took longer—next time I’ll check earlier or lower to 375.

    1. User avatar Bilbo Baggins says:

      5 stars
Totally feel you—400°F can brown puff pastry edges really quickly. I usually start checking around 12–14 minutes and then dial down to 375°F if it’s getting too dark.

  66. 4 stars
Wait… you say “1 egg egg wash 1 egg beaten with 1 tablespoon water” which is confusing. I used 1 egg + water anyway and it worked.

  67. 5 stars
Made these last night—so easy and the filling stayed nice and thick. I used lemon juice and it made the flavor pop. Will definitely repeat!

    1. User avatar rob.kertzmann says:

      5 stars
Yesss, that lemon juice tip is spot on—makes it taste way less heavy. I’m glad your filling stayed thick too; mine sometimes gets runny if I over-fill. Definitely trying your way next time!

  68. User avatar Piter De Vries says:

    4 stars
One of my squares burst open and the filling spread—probably because my pastry thawed too long. Taste was still amazing.

    1. User avatar shirlene.kertzmann75 says:

      5 stars
Oof, I’ve had that happen too 😅 Puff pastry can get too warm fast. Your pastry thawing note is spot-on—next time I’d keep it cold and don’t overhandle while filling.

  69. 2 stars
Honestly 2 sheets puff pastry for 8 pieces seems weird—are they supposed to be smaller? I ended up with too many squares and they got tiny.

  70. User avatar cleveland.yundt54 says:

    5 stars
400°F for 16-18 min was perfect for me. I did half with coarse sugar, half with glaze. Both ways were great—sweet, flaky, and not too complicated.

    1. 5 stars
400°F for 16–18 min really nailed it for me too—golden and the filling isn’t runny. Love the idea of doing half coarse sugar and half glaze!

    2. User avatar joe_banana says:

      4 stars
I’m skeptical about the glaze part—powdered sugar + milk can get watery if you don’t let them cool completely. But your “not too complicated” comment makes me want to try it anyway.
