Chicken Shawarma Tacos

October 10, 2025

Chicken Shawarma Tacos bring together the best of two worlds – the bold Middle Eastern flavors of chicken shawarma wrapped in the fun, handheld style of a taco. Juicy, spiced chicken meets warm tortillas, fresh toppings, and creamy sauce for a fusion dish that’s vibrant, satisfying, and bursting with flavor in every bite.

The heart of this recipe is the chicken, marinated in a blend of warm spices like cumin, paprika, garlic, turmeric, and a touch of cinnamon. The marinade infuses every piece with rich, aromatic flavor, while a splash of lemon juice or yogurt keeps the meat tender and juicy. Once cooked, the chicken develops a slightly charred, golden exterior that perfectly complements the soft tortillas.

Each taco becomes a flavorful layering of textures and tastes. Crisp lettuce or cabbage adds freshness, sliced onions or pickled vegetables bring tang, and a drizzle of garlicky yogurt or tahini sauce ties everything together. The combination of spicy, savory chicken and cool, creamy toppings makes these tacos irresistible from the first bite.

What makes Chicken Shawarma Tacos so special is their versatility. They can be served as a casual weeknight dinner, a crowd-pleasing party dish, or even prepped ahead for meal planning. You can use traditional pita or switch it up with flour or corn tortillas for a modern twist. No matter how they’re served, the fusion of shawarma spice and taco flair feels fresh and exciting.

Chicken Shawarma Tacos capture the spirit of global comfort food – bold, approachable, and full of personality. Every bite is a little adventure, combining smoky spice with fresh, zesty flavor. It’s a dish that proves great food doesn’t have to follow borders; it just has to taste amazing..

Total Time 50 minutes

Ingredients

  • 500 g chicken breast boneless, skinless
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice freshly squeezed
  • 2 tsp ground cumin
  • 2 tsp ground coriander
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp ground turmeric
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 0.5 tsp ground allspice
  • 0.5 tsp salt to taste
  • 0.5 tsp black pepper to taste
  • 8 pieces small tortillas warmed
  • 1 cup yogurt plain
  • 1 tbsp tahini
  • 1 cup cucumber diced
  • 1 cup tomato diced
  • 0.5 cup red onion sliced
  • 0.5 cup fresh parsley chopped

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, combine olive oil, lemon juice, cumin, coriander, paprika, turmeric, cinnamon, allspice, salt, and pepper. Add the chicken breasts and coat them well with the marinade. Let it marinate for at least 30 minutes.
  • Heat a grill or skillet over medium heat. Cook the marinated chicken breasts for 6-7 minutes on each side or until fully cooked. Remove from heat and let it rest for 5 minutes before slicing.
  • To prepare the sauce, mix yogurt and tahini in a small bowl until well combined.
  • Assemble the tacos by placing slices of chicken into each tortilla. Top with diced cucumber, tomato, red onion, and chopped parsley.
  • Drizzle the yogurt-tahini sauce over the fillings. Serve immediately and enjoy!

These tacos are super fresh! The herbs really make it pop! 🌿

    1. 2 stars
I dunno, seems like a lotta ingredients for tacos. Can’t you just use store-bought stuff? 🤷‍♂️

    2. 5 stars
Totally agree! The freshness of the herbs takes it to another level! 🌮✨

Too many ingredients! Who has time for all that? 🤔

My chicken didn’t cook through, took longer than 7 mins. Maybe my stove is too weak?

    1. User avatar rashad.connelly79 says:

      4 stars
I had the same issue before! Maybe try cooking a little longer next time? Just don’t leave it on too long or it’ll get dry.

  10. User avatar rey.gibson80 says:

    3 stars
Basic but tasty, nothing special. I might try adding cheese next time.

  11. User avatar gregg.bahringer says:

Wow, these are the best tacos I’ve ever had! I added some hot sauce for extra spice. Yum!

  12. User avatar terminatorXYZ says:

Is it really supposed to marinate for 30 minutes? I left it for an hour and it was super strong.

    1. User avatar jonathan.hill73 says:

      4 stars
Marinating for an hour sounds too long for me too. I usually stick to the 30 min rule. Maybe try less time next time.

    2. User avatar Mabel Hamill says:

      3 stars
Why would 30 mins not be enough? Sounds like you left it too long! Tacos should be tasty not overpowering.

  13. User avatar clint.ankunding47 says:

Can I use chili powder instead of paprika? I don’t have paprika at home. Still think it looks yum!

  14. User avatar cedric.bins says:

    4 stars
I don’t usually like shawarma, but this recipe made me a fan. I used beef instead and it still turned out great!

  15. User avatar Sanora Carter says:

These tacos are just amazing! The spices were perfect, and the yogurt-tahini sauce added a nice touch. Definitely making this again!

  16. User avatar risa.schimmel says:

It took me a bit longer to cook, and I burnt the chicken a little. But the flavor was still okay. Should have followed the timing better.

    1. 2 stars
Burnt chicken??? That’s not how you make tacos! You gotta pay attention! 😤 It’s important to follow the timing.

    2. User avatar rich.landlord says:

      4 stars
Don’t worry! It happens to the best of us. A little burnt chicken can still be tasty with all those flavors. Next time, maybe set a timer? 😅

  17. 5 stars
So good, even my kids loved ’em. Can we put chicken shawarma in everything now?

  18. User avatar scott.schumm says:

This was a lot of work for some tacos 😩. Can’t we just get takeout instead?

  21. User avatar audry.bayer says:

    2 stars
Too many spices for my taste. I prefer simpler flavors. Maybe just salt and pepper next time? 🤷‍♂️

  22. User avatar geraldine.nitzsche6 says:

    2 stars
Eh, they were alright, nothing special. I’m not a big fan of yogurt, so that kinda ruined it for me.

  23. User avatar kelvin.kilback says:

    5 stars
Yum! My family loved it, even the picky kids! One of the best dinner nights I’ve had!

  24. 3 stars
I dunno, I thought the spices were kinda overwhelming. Maybe I added too much?

  25. 5 stars
Wow, these were amazing! The flavors are spot on and so easy to make!

    1. User avatar doyle.thompson5 says:

      3 stars
Easy to make? I dunno, seems like a lot of steps. Can you just fry the chicken and throw the stuff in the tortilla? 🤔

    2. User avatar van.powlowski1989 says:

I totally agree! The combination of flavors is just perfect. This is now my go-to recipe!

  26. User avatar mitzi.hansen91 says:

  27. User avatar anderson.gusikowski45 says:

Tacos? Shawarma? Not sure if that’s a good mix. I kinda wanted shawarma, but tacos are more my thing. Not sure I would try this.
