Banana Split

February 17, 2025

The banana split is a timeless dessert that combines the perfect balance of creamy, fruity, and indulgent flavors. This iconic treat has been delighting dessert lovers for generations, and it’s easy to see why. With its layers of banana, ice cream, whipped cream, and toppings, the banana split is a celebration of all things sweet and satisfying. Whether you’re enjoying it on a hot summer day or treating yourself after dinner, this dessert is guaranteed to bring a smile to your face.

The base of the banana split is, of course, the banana. Sliced lengthwise, the banana serves as the perfect vessel for holding all of the delicious toppings. The fruit adds natural sweetness and a bit of freshness to balance out the rich, creamy elements of the dessert.

Next comes the star of the show: the ice cream. Traditionally, a banana split includes three scoops of ice cream, usually vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry, each offering its own unique flavor that complements the banana and toppings perfectly. The creamy texture of the ice cream blends beautifully with the banana, creating a classic combination that’s both nostalgic and indulgent.

The fun really begins when you start adding the toppings. A generous drizzle of chocolate syrup, a scattering of chopped nuts, and a few maraschino cherries on top bring extra sweetness, crunch, and color to the dish. You can also add whipped cream to create a light and fluffy layer that adds a bit of airiness to the richness of the ice cream. Some people even like to sprinkle the split with colorful sprinkles or add a drizzle of caramel or strawberry sauce for extra flavor.

One of the best things about a banana split is how customizable it is. Feel free to swap out the traditional flavors of ice cream for your favorites, or get creative with toppings – peanut butter, crushed Oreos, or even coconut flakes can all make delicious additions to your banana split.

Whether you stick to the classic recipe or experiment with your own variations, a banana split is always a fun and indulgent treat that’s perfect for sharing or enjoying on your own.

not really a fan of bananas, but I guess this looks good for people who like them.

  42. 4 stars
    Just 3 flavors? I guess that’s okay if you’re not fancy 🤷‍♀️

    1. 4 stars
Not everyone needs a million flavors to enjoy dessert! This looks delicious to me!

  43. User avatar stacy.abbott1 says:

    2 stars
I’m skeptical. Who has time for this? Just eat the ice cream straight from the tub!

    1. 4 stars
I get what you’re saying! Ice cream is great straight from the tub, but you gotta admit, this is way more fun to serve at a party!

  44. User avatar anibal.stamm91 says:

    1 star
Why is there so much whipped cream? Seems like a waste of ingredients.

  45. User avatar misty.kuhic65 says:

    1. User avatar cary.wuckert says:

This sounds delicious! I might even try adding some caramel sauce for extra flavor. Can’t wait to make it!

  47. User avatar ricky.klocko2017 says:

This is the best banana split recipe I’ve ever tried! So easy to make and super delicious!

    1. User avatar Heimerdinger says:

    2. User avatar Sapphire says:

      5 stars
I’m glad you loved it! Banana splits are the best dessert for sure!

  48. 4 stars
Super easy and I only had to use one bowl! I left out the nuts though, don’t like em. Overall, a hit. 😊

  49. 2 stars
I don’t see how you can call this a recipe… it’s just putting stuff together. Where’s the cooking? 🤷‍♂️

  50. User avatar efrain.bartoletti says:

    3 stars
I think u should add more fruits instead of just a banana. It’s just a banana split with ice cream.

    1. User avatar sena.anderson53 says:

      4 stars
But it’s a classic! The simplicity of a banana split is what makes it so good. Adding more fruits would change the whole vibe.

  51. User avatar indira.kihn2016 says:

    2 stars
Very basic, honestly. I was expecting something more fancy. Just split a banana and slap some ice cream? Not impressed.

    1. User avatar anonymous_hacker says:

      4 stars
Honestly, what’s fancy about a banana anyway? You can’t overhaul a classic, just enjoy it! 🍌

    2. User avatar rich.landlord says:

      5 stars
Sometimes simple is best! I love a classic banana split. It reminds me of my childhood. 😊

  52. 3 stars
Why do you need 3 types of ice cream? Sounds expensive. Just use one!

  53. User avatar millard.purdy25 says:

    4 stars
I followed it mostly, but I only had caramel syrup instead of pineapple. Still pretty good, but the flavor wasn’t as “classic” as I expected. Would make again with the right syrups though.

  54. User avatar diego.turner1966 says:

    5 stars
This banana split is delish! Perfect for summer.

Yum! I agree, this is the best treat for a hot day! 🍦

  56. User avatar silvana.konopelski36 says:

Super yum! My kids loved it. I added some sprinkles and they went crazy! 🍦🍌

  57. User avatar Peregrin Took says:

    2 stars
I’m gonna be honest, this was kinda bland for me. The banana got lost under all the sweet stuff. Maybe use less syrup or thicker ice cream?

  58. User avatar marvel.nicolas says:

    2 stars
Honestly, I expected more from a banana split. The banana was too mushy with all the syrup. Not my fav.

  59. User avatar Reed Bartoletti says:

    3 stars
I dunno, is it really a banana split without diced fruits too? Seems missing something.

    1. 4 stars
I think it’s fine just like that! A classic banana split doesn’t need too much. Just the ice cream and toppings are perfect!

    2. User avatar hiram.huels92 says:

      2 stars
No way, a banana split should have fruit! Where’s the fun in just bananas and ice cream? Needs more color.

  60. User avatar federico.roob says:

    2 stars
Banana splits ain’t my thing. I prefer cake!

    1. 4 stars
Cake is great, but have you ever tried a banana split with extra toppings? It’s a game changer!

  61. User avatar Lean Krajcik MD says:

    2. User avatar clair.medhurst says:

      5 stars
Sounds delicious! Can’t wait to try this myself. Great job!

  64. 5 stars
This is such a fun, low-effort banana split. The combo of three syrups is a little extra but honestly makes it taste like a proper sundae.

    1. User avatar Reg Nullify says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—three syrups sounds extra, but it really does taste like a “real” sundae. The pineapple syrup especially surprised me (in a good way). 🍌🍍

    4 stars
I thought banana splits were more complicated. This was so easy! Thanks for the recipe!

Peanut butter? That sounds amazing! I gotta try it like that next time. Thanks for the tip!

    2. User avatar sima.will31 says:

  78. User avatar coy.moen1997 says:

    3 stars
Like, isn’t it too sweet? Just a lot of sugar I think, but people like it.

  79. User avatar Siona Atreides says:

wtf, why would anyone put pineapple on a banana split? It’s not right!

    1. User avatar stephenie.schmitt says:

      4 stars
I guess everyone has their own taste! But pineapple on banana split is a classic in some places. You should try it before judging!

  80. User avatar cody.hoppe61 says:

    5 stars
Classic and honestly kinda genius—banana + three flavors of ice cream is always a win. I used extra pineapple syrup and it tasted like summer.

  81. 2 stars
I don’t get why you’d want more than one flavor of ice cream. Just vanilla is enough!

  82. 1 star
I don’t get why people love banana splits. Bananas n ice cream? Makes no sense. Give me pie any day.

  83. User avatar lorenzo.wilkinson1992 says:

    3 stars
I think it needs more chocolate syrup. Just not sweet enough for me! 🤔

    1. User avatar Super Saiyan 2 Goku says:

      4 stars
I totally disagree! I think it’s perfect as is. Adding too much syrup can make it overly sweet. Less is more! 🍰

  84. User avatar celestina.dubuque22 says:

    2 stars
This is too many syrups! My stomach is not ready for that. Maybe just one would be better?

  85. 4 stars
The ratios feel random—three syrups plus whipped cream? I ended up going heavy on the chocolate syrup and everything tasted chocolatey (in a good way).

    1. User avatar terrance.jacobson1 says:

      4 stars
Yeah, the ratios look kinda “whatever” on paper, but your result sounds perfect. I always think a little extra chocolate syrup helps the banana + chocolate ice cream combo really pop.

  86. User avatar rich.landlord says:

    4 stars
I thought it was gonna be complicated, but this is so easy! Who knew all you needed was ice cream and a banana?

    1. User avatar basementDweller says:

      2 stars
Easy? I thought it needed more stuff. Looks kinda plain to me…

    2. 5 stars
I know, right?! It’s like the easiest treat ever! My kids loved making this with me.

  87. User avatar rosa.prosacco2008 says:

    3 stars
The banana being split lengthwise is a cute touch, but mine got a little mushy by the time I served it. Next time I’ll do it faster or use firmer banana.

  88. User avatar caprice.roberts44 says:

    4 stars
Not sure about the pineapple syrup with chocolate syrup together… it sounds weird but I tried it anyway and it worked. Sweet-tart balance is real.

  89. User avatar booker.price says:

    2 stars
Too much syrup for my taste… I like things more healthi. Only used half the syrup.

  90. User avatar danny.nienow1953 says:

    5 stars
This is such a simple way to make a banana split without overthinking it. The three syrups make it taste like a real dessert counter version—sweet, fruity, and extra indulgent.

  91. 4 stars
Yum! I love how simple this is. My kids loved it!

  92. User avatar nicolasa.reinger56 says:

    3 stars
Not bad but I only had chocolate syrup. Still tasted fine tho.

  93. User avatar merlin.huel2005 says:

    1 star
I dunno, i once tried making this and ended up with a mushy mess. Not sure how you did it right.

  94. User avatar NAFO.SUPREMACY says:

  96. User avatar rosamaria.langworth says:

Banana and ice cream is life! <3

  97. User avatar carrol.fadel65 says:

    5 stars
This is basically a dessert tower in a dish 😂. The banana helps it stay fresh. I’ll make it again for sure.

    1. User avatar Demon King Piccolo says:

      5 stars
😂 “dessert tower” is EXACTLY what it looks like. Love that banana trick—keeps it from turning into a sad puddle, too. Gonna try your setup next time!

    2. 3 stars
I’m not sure about the pineapple syrup on top… feels a little weird with banana + cherry. But if you say it stays fresh, I might test it with less syrup first.

  98. User avatar Nelly Gutkowski MD says:

    1 star
Banana split? More like banana SUCK, my mom’s are way better and she uses peach ice cream. LOL!

  99. User avatar carrol.okuneva says:

    4 stars
5 star? maybe. But like… 3 scoops ice cream between banana halves—my half banana barely fit. I had to mash it a lil. Still good!

    1. User avatar tissues_with_issues says:

      4 stars
I mean… 3 scoops between banana halves sounds like a lot. Maybe use smaller scoops or slice bananas thinner? Either way, glad it still worked!

    2. 5 stars
Haha I’ve totally done the “half banana squeezed in” version 😄 If it tastes good, it’s correct!

  100. User avatar alfredo.nader says:

    3 stars
Not gonna lie, I didn’t have maraschino cherries so I used a regular one and it tasted way too tart. Still tasty, but garnish matters.

    1. User avatar Cammar Pilru says:

      3 stars
Wait, maraschino cherries matter that much? I thought it was mostly for looks. If it tasted tart, maybe your ice cream or syrups were off too? Either way, nice save though 😅

    2. 5 stars
Totally get that—maraschino cherries are usually sweet, so swapping to a “regular” cherry can definitely swing it tart. Next time you could either add a tiny bit of sugar/honey to the cherry or use a sweeter cherry variety for the garnish.

  101. User avatar shae.pfeffer25 says:

    2 stars
Whipped cream on top feels kinda pointless to me. Like why not just add more ice cream? Also, 3 syrups seems excessive—my kitchen ended up looking like a sundae crime scene lol.

Looks fun, but the pineapple syrup threw me off. Like why not just use extra chocolate? I guess it’s okay, just not my fave.

I followed it pretty closely, but I think 1 cup whipped cream is a lot (or maybe my banana was huge). Still super good though—crunchy nuts made it.

Ooh that sounds right up my alley. I’ve found 1 cup whipped cream *can* be a lot, but for me it’s worth it—makes it feel like an actual sundae. Love the crunchy nuts combo!

I did this for the kids and it was gone in minutes. Next time I’ll add more nuts though—2 tbsp felt a bit stingy.

Honestly I didn’t have maraschino cherries, so I used chopped dried cherries. It worked way better than I thought and tasted surprisingly bright.

Huh, dried cherries… I’m skeptical but if you say it tastes bright, I guess I’ll try it. I might add a tiny bit of honey or extra cherry juice though.

That’s awesome! Dried cherries instead of maraschino actually makes sense—more tart, less sugary. Glad it came out bright. 🍒
