Baked Tilapia with Mediterranean Salsa

February 20, 2024

Greek-style baked tilapia with Mediterranean salsa is the perfect dish when you’re craving a fresh, vibrant, and healthy meal that doesn’t compromise on flavor. This dish combines the delicate, flaky texture of tilapia with a bright, zesty salsa inspired by the Mediterranean’s best ingredients. It’s light, satisfying, and filled with wholesome flavors that make it ideal for a weeknight dinner or a special occasion.

The tilapia is simply seasoned with olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, and dried herbs like oregano, which are staples in Greek cuisine. The fish is then baked until perfectly tender and flaky, absorbing all the aromatic goodness from the seasoning. It’s the kind of dish that lets the natural flavors of the fish shine, without needing too many complicated ingredients.

What truly sets this dish apart is the Mediterranean salsa, which is both refreshing and full of texture. Made with diced tomatoes, cucumber, Kalamata olives, red onion, and fresh herbs like parsley and dill, the salsa is light yet packed with flavor. A drizzle of olive oil and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice ties everything together, creating a vibrant topping that complements the tilapia perfectly.

The combination of the warm, baked fish and the cool, crisp salsa creates an irresistible contrast. The olives add a briny richness that balances the sweetness of the tomatoes, while the cucumbers provide a refreshing crunch. Fresh herbs and lemon bring brightness, making each bite feel like a taste of the Mediterranean.

This dish is as healthy as it is delicious, with lean protein from the tilapia and a medley of fresh vegetables in the salsa. Serve it with a side of quinoa, couscous, or a green salad for a complete, balanced meal that feels both indulgent and nourishing. Greek-style baked tilapia with Mediterranean salsa is a wonderful way to enjoy light, healthy seafood with bold, Mediterranean flavors. It’s simple, quick, and guaranteed to be a hit at the dinner table.

I’m not a huge fish person but this was actually good. My salsa got watery though—maybe my cucumber was too juicy. I’ll pat it dry next time.

Totally get it—watery salsa is usually the cucumber (or rinsed tomatoes). Patting the cucumber dry or salting it for a few minutes helps a ton. This looks delicious though!

I followed it exactly and it came out bland. Maybe my oregano was old? I added lemon zest after and it helped.

  3. 5 stars
This recipe is amazing! I love how fresh it tastes. My family enjoyed it too!

Looks good but I’m skeptical about 12-15 mins for all tilapia sizes. If you get thick fillets, it might not be “cooked through” in that time. Maybe mention thickness?

    1. 5 stars
Totally agree—12–15 min depends a lot on fillet thickness. I’d definitely call that out (like “bake until it flakes easily, ~1/2-inch thickness = ~12 min”).

Good catch. Tilapia cooks fast, but thick pieces can stay a bit raw inside. Next time I’ll note “thin fillets” or include a thickness guideline.

That’s awesome! I love when something is both easy and delicious. What did your family like most about it?

Really? It looks simple, but I wonder if the tilapia has enough flavor. I’ve tried other fish dishes that were bland. 😕

I love Greek food! This dish is now a weekly staple for me. 🤤

Kinda bland to me, I had to drown it in extra lemon and pepper. The salsa was better than the fish. Wouldn’t repeat exactly as written.

Mine was also kinda bland at first. I think 1 tsp oregano for 4 fillets feels light? Next time I’ll do more garlic/oregano or add a little feta to the salsa.

    2. 4 stars
I get what you mean—tilapia can be pretty mild. I usually bump the oregano and add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the marinade, plus extra lemon right before serving. Helps a lot.

This was delicious! The fish turned out so flaky and the salsa was fresh. Definitely making this again!

Total failure! I overcooked the fish and it was like rubber. Anyone got tips?

How do you bake fish? Isn’t it better to fry it? But I tried this and it wasn’t too bad!

Ugh, too much lemon!!! It was like biting into a citrus bomb. Never again! 🙁

Maybe you used too much lemon juice? You can tone it down next time! I love this recipe.

This is sooo good! The salsa adds the perfect touch. Definitely a keeper!

Totally agree! The salsa is what makes it pop! I also added some feta cheese on top. Yum!

Pretty good, but my tilapia came out a bit dry at 15 minutes. Next time I’ll check around 10-12 and pull it earlier. Salsa was awesome though—lots of crunch.

Good catch on the timing—tilapia can go from perfect to dry fast. I usually start checking at 10 minutes too. Glad the salsa still saved the day!

Maybe your oven runs hot? 400°F for 15 minutes feels like a lot for thin fillets. I’d try lower temp or thinner/more even fillet pieces. Salsa really is the best part though—so crunchy 😋

Not sure I agree with baking the tilapia uncovered—mine dried slightly at the edges. The salsa helped a lot, but I’d probably cover with foil for the first half next time.

I tried this with lemon pepper instead of oregano. It turned out good! 😋

This was way better than expected. I didn’t have fresh dill so I used dried (yeah I know), and it still tasted bright. The vinegar in the salsa really pops.

This was super easy! My kids actually ate it without complaint. Will make again!

This is a great ‘weeknight’ recipe. I liked how the marinade steps are simple and the salsa is basically chop-and-mix. 10/10 for low effort, big payoff.

    I don’t know about tilapia… Isn’t it a bit bland? I used salmon instead.

Mmm, too much garlic for my taste. Anyone else feel that?

    1. 4 stars
I actually love garlic! It gives so much flavor to the dish. Maybe try using less next time or even skipping it? Just a thought!

Not gonna lie, I got skeptical when I saw 12-15 minutes. Fish can be tricky, but this timing actually worked. I used a thinner fillet and it was done right on time.

    1. 5 stars
That’s reassuring! I always assume fish needs longer than that, so nice to know 12–15 minutes is legit with thinner fillets.

    2. User avatar darius.abernathy2017 says:

      3 stars
I tried this once and my timing was way off—mine turned out a bit dry. Do you think it’s more about fillet thickness than the oven temp?

  28. 2 stars
I don’t know, maybe I did something wrong? The tilapia came out kinda dry.

    1. User avatar dusti.stamm6 says:

      4 stars
Maybe try cooking it a bit less next time? Fish can get dry if overcooked.

  29. 4 stars
Not bad at all. I think 2 cloves garlic is a lot for my taste, so I’ll do 1 next time. Flavors are balanced though.

Wow. Greek-ish flavors without the drama. My husband asked what restaurant this was from 😅
