Spicy Thai Basil Chicken

August 1, 2024

Spicy Thai Basil Chicken, or Gai Pad Krapow, is a vibrant and aromatic dish that brings the heat and flavor of Thai cuisine to your kitchen. Known for its bold combination of spicy chilies, savory garlic, and fresh basil, this dish offers a perfect balance of heat, sweet, and savory flavors that tantalize the taste buds. It’s a quick and easy recipe that delivers a flavorful punch in every bite.

The star ingredient of this dish is the fresh basil, which adds a fragrant, slightly peppery flavor that is essential to the authentic taste of Thai basil chicken. The chicken is typically stir-fried with garlic, shallots, and Thai bird’s eye chilies, creating a flavorful base. The heat from the chilies is tempered by a savory sauce made with soy sauce, fish sauce, and a touch of sugar, creating a perfect balance of spicy, salty, and sweet notes.

One of the key components that elevate this dish is the crispy bits of chicken, which are stir-fried to perfection. The crispy edges paired with the tender, juicy chicken create a delightful texture that complements the bold sauce. Adding a fried egg on top of the dish is a common practice in Thailand, adding richness and an extra layer of flavor to the meal.

Spicy Thai Basil Chicken is incredibly versatile. You can adjust the level of spiciness to suit your taste by using fewer or more chilies. The dish is typically served with steamed jasmine rice, which helps to balance the heat and soak up the flavorful sauce. It’s also great with a side of stir-fried vegetables, making it a complete meal that is satisfying and full of vibrant flavors.

This dish is not only delicious but also quick to prepare, making it a perfect weeknight meal when you want something flavorful without spending hours in the kitchen. The combination of spicy chilies, savory garlic, and aromatic basil creates a dish that is both comforting and exciting.

Is this really Thai food? It just tastes like soy sauce. Meh.

  6. User avatar marjorie.kemmer says:

Why do ppl like fish sauce? It smells weird! I’d rather just use soy sauce.

  7. 2 stars
I dunno, I feel like thi recipe is missing some flavors, like lime or something, ya know?

  8. User avatar tissues_with_issues says:

The instructions say “over rice with a fried egg on top,” but like… I didn’t have basil so I used spinach. Still okay but not the same vibe. Also minced chicken is kinda hard to find here.

    1. 3 stars
I dunno, spinach is not really basil… it changes the whole flavor to me 😅 Also minced chicken is hard—maybe just chop it small? or use ground turkey if needed.

    2. User avatar temple.jast62 says:

      5 stars
Totally fine swap! Spinach won’t be the exact same, but it’ll still wilt and taste great with the spicy sauce. I’ve done it with what I had too.

  9. 5 stars
Yummy! Reminds me of my trip to Thailand! Eat it with a fried egg for real.

Simple and delicious, but why is there fish sauce? Can’t we just use soy sauce?

  17. User avatar wava.walter20 says:

Sounds good but I don’t have oyster sauce. Can I use soy sauce only? Help!

  18. 5 stars
This was seriously flavorful—garlic + chilies hit fast, and the fish sauce + oyster combo made it taste super authentic. I served it over jasmine rice with a runny fried egg and it was perfect. 🌶️

    1. User avatar mikel.nikolaus says:

      5 stars
Agreed—this combo is legit. The garlic + chilies smell amazing, and the fish sauce/oyster sauce really brings it home. I did it over rice with a fried egg too and it was a whole vibe. 🌶️

  19. 3 stars
My chicken was dry (probably overcooked). The sauce is great though—wish the instructions said cook time range. I’ll try again and watch it closer.

    1. 4 stars
Ugh, I’m sorry—dry chicken is the worst. This one is super sensitive to timing since it’s basically stir-fried until “no longer pink.” Next time I’d pull it the moment it’s just cooked through (like 2–4 minutes depending on thickness). Glad the sauce worked for you though!

  20. User avatar wilbur.kunde says:

    5 stars
This is the best chicken recipe! I added more chilies. So good!

  21. User avatar daisy.bartell45 says:

Looks easy, but I don’t think my kids will eat it. They don’t like spicy food. 😕

  22. User avatar whitney.franecki says:

    4 stars
The instructions are simple and it came together quick. I served it with rice and cucumber salad—wish I had more basil on hand.

    1. User avatar kimi.monahan says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—this one is fast. Next time I’m adding extra basil too; the smell alone is worth it. I usually serve mine with jasmine rice and a fried egg like the recipe says—so good.

  23. User avatar sondra.huel60 says:

    5 stars
This was super spicy! My mouth was on fire, but I loved it!

    1. User avatar Slaughterfish says:

      2 stars
I can’t handle that much spice! How can you enjoy it? I thought it was just gonna be a little kick.

  24. User avatar Tangela Botsford says:

    4 stars
Simple ingredients but packed with flavor. Will definitely make this again!

  25. 2 stars
IDK about this one, I don’t like fish sauce. What can I substitute it with? Maybe ketchup?

    1. User avatar nickolas.schultz2001 says:

      3 stars
No way ketchup will work! Just use more soy sauce or maybe skip the fish sauce altogether.

    2. User avatar Cammar Pilru says:

      4 stars
You can try using soy sauce or even a little bit of vinegar for a tangy flavor. But ketchup? That might be too sweet for this dish!

  26. 5 stars
I’m skeptical about fish sauce here—like, how much “fish” are we tasting? Turned out it’s not fishy at all, just savory. Love it, will make again.

    1. User avatar Questular Rontok says:

      5 stars
Totally felt the same at first—fish sauce always scares people 😅 but yeah, it kind of disappears and leaves that deep savory vibe. What brand did you use?

    2. 3 stars
Hmm I dunno… 1 teaspoon fish sauce in a whole pan doesn’t sound like “fishy” but some fish sauce brands be strong. I’d try like half next time or add it later so it doesn’t get too pungent.

  27. 2 stars
This looks complicated… I might stick to takeout lol.

  28. 2 stars
Not a fan of Thai basil (I know, blasphemy). I used regular basil and it was still okay, but not the same punch. If you like basil leaves, you’ll love it.

  29. User avatar donnetta.blanda says:

    5 stars
This sounds legit—Thai basil + fish sauce is the perfect combo. I’d add a little extra chili next time because “spicy” for me is not optional.

    1. 5 stars
Yes!! That fish sauce + basil combo is the whole point 😄 I agree—extra chili would make it way better. I’ll try adding more Thai chilies next round.

  30. User avatar jacob.spencer says:

    3 stars
Tasty, but why do you put sugar in there? Seems weird. Got a sweet chicken now!

  31. User avatar rich.landlord says:

    4 stars
Used chicken thighs instead because they were on sale, turned out great!

    1. User avatar dalton.nitzsche says:

      5 stars
Chicken thighs are a good substitute! I’ve done that before too, they stay juicier.

  32. User avatar Meriadoc Brandybuck says:

    3 stars
Very basic recipe but I guess it does the job. Nothing special.

  33. User avatar Charles Darwin says:

    3 stars
I tried to make it healthier and used less oil, but then the chicken stuck a little. Next time I’ll deglaze with a teaspoon of water or broth.

  34. 2 stars
I don’t think this is authentic. Real Thai food uses way more chilies! This was too mild for my taste.

    1. User avatar lyndia.beier says:

      4 stars
I get where you’re coming from, but not all Thai dishes are super spicy. This one is more about the flavor of the basil! 🌿

  35. User avatar latanya.pagac says:

    4 stars
Yum! But I didn’t have chicken, so I used tofu instead, still yum!

    1. 5 stars
Tofu sounds great! I’ve been wanting to try a vegetarian version too.

  36. 5 stars
Yum! I never knew about Thai basil until now. This was a game changer for me.

  37. User avatar angila.leannon43 says:

    5 stars
This recipe was awesome! The flavors are just perfect. Definitely making it again!

    1. 5 stars
I’m so glad you liked it! The flavors are just unbeatable. What do you plan to serve it with next time?

    2. User avatar gillian.hane2018 says:

      3 stars
Cool! But why is it called spicy? I didn’t think it was that hot. Maybe I did somethin’ wrong?

  38. User avatar genesis.gottlieb66 says:

    3 stars
I followed the steps but my basil turned dark and a little bitter. Maybe I cooked it too long—next time I’ll toss it in at the very end.

    1. User avatar Gaston Prosacco says:

      5 stars
Yeah, if the basil goes dark, it usually means it got cooked a bit too long or too hot. Toss it in at the very end and just stir until wilted—no extra simmering.

  39. 1 star
Where do I find Thai basil? I looked everywhere and only found the regular stuff. Help!

    1. User avatar rivka.ondricka44 says:

      5 stars
You can usually find Thai basil at Asian grocery stores. They often have it fresh! Good luck!

  40. 3 stars
I tried it but it was too spicy for my taste. I might reduce the chilies next time.

  41. User avatar milford.williamson22 says:

    5 stars
My family loved it! I served it with rice and a fried egg, just like the recipe said!

  42. 3 stars
This is not really authentic.. where’s the lime? 🤔

  43. User avatar fermin.murphy18 says:

    5 stars
Yummy! Just like my favorite restaurant! Can’t believe how simple it was to make.

  44. User avatar clayton.kohler96 says:

    4 stars
Isn’t fish sauce made from fish? I really couldn’t taste it lol. Still good tho.

  45. User avatar johnny.lebsack93 says:

    5 stars
Just like my mom makes! Brings back sweet memories of Thailand. ❤️

    1. 5 stars
This sounds amazing! I love Thai food! Can’t wait to try it.

  46. 5 stars
This was amazing! So full of flavor. Will make again.

  47. User avatar ward.boehm63 says:

    5 stars
This is giving me restaurant vibes. Garlic + chilies fragrant in the oil is everything. Next time I might add a squeeze of lime at the end.

    1. User avatar Marni Mayert says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—when the garlic and chilies hit the oil it smells like a legit takeout place. I usually finish with a little lime too… brightens everything up.

    2. User avatar rhinoceros says:

      3 stars
Hmmm I tried something similar but I think my chilies were too strong—tasted kinda “bitey” and didn’t feel balanced. Also I used chicken thighs and it came out better. Lime at the end might help though?

  48. 2 stars
Was expecting better. Seemed a little bland. Needs more seasonin.

  49. 4 stars
Quick and easy! Made it in 20 mins. Great for busy nights.

  50. 4 stars
Honestly, this sounds like every Thai basil chicken recipe… but it works. I added a little cornstarch slurry at the end and it got glossy like takeout.

  51. User avatar ying.herzog says:

    5 stars
Wow, the flavors were amazing! Definitely adding this to my weekly menu.

  52. User avatar eddie.kuhlman76 says:

    4 stars
Super easy to make and so tasty! My kids loved it too. Will definitely make again!

  53. User avatar dane.schimmel1976 says:

    5 stars
This is dangerously good. The fish sauce + oyster sauce combo makes it taste like takeout, but fresher. I served it over jasmine rice with a runny egg and it was perfect!

  54. User avatar otto.klocko says:

    4 stars
Could you use chicken thighs instead of breast? Might make it juicier!

  55. User avatar ramon.maggio says:

    3 stars
Too spicy for me at the 2 chilies—maybe my chilies were extra hot. I’d cut it in half. Other than that, flavors were really balanced.

    1. User avatar sixta.pacocha14 says:

      4 stars
Hmm I didn’t think it was that spicy? But if your chilies were extra hot, half should totally work. Maybe also remove the seeds—less heat but similar flavor.

    2. 5 stars
Yeah, Thai chilies can be wildly different depending on brand/age. Cutting to 1 chili makes sense—glad the rest was still balanced!

  56. 2 stars
Not gonna lie, minced chicken breast dries out fast. I’d rather use thigh. Maybe reduce cooking time so it stays juicy.

    1. User avatar hien.batz2004 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—minced breast can go dry fast, especially once it’s cooked through. Using thigh (or even mixing breast + thigh) would help a lot. Reducing the cook time and cooking just until it’s done should keep it juicy.

    2. User avatar geoWizard says:

      3 stars
Hmm I think if you cook it just till no longer pink, it should be fine? But maybe your pan runs hot. Also Thai basil cooks down quick, so maybe cut step 3 time more than you think.

  57. User avatar Falmer Spellsword says:

    3 stars
Wife loved it, me not so much. Too spicy for my taste. But I guess that’s personal.

    1. User avatar abraham.connelly49 says:

      4 stars
I totally get it! Spicy food really isn’t for everyone. But glad your wife enjoyed it!

    2. User avatar Ahmed Hayes says:

      3 stars
Too spicy? You must’ve used too many chilies! 😂 Next time, just adjust the amount!

  58. User avatar nicolas.ruecker says:

    1 star
What even is oyster sauce? Can I use something else?

  59. 5 stars
I don’t really like chicken, so I used tofu instead. Still tasted great!

  60. User avatar charley.davis says:

    5 stars
Super simple and flavorful. I added a splash of lime at the end because I can never leave well enough alone, and it really brightened it up.
