Spicy Chicken Cous Cous

January 24, 2024

Spicy chicken couscous is a deliciously simple dish that combines the savory flavors of tender chicken with aromatic spices and fluffy couscous. It’s the perfect option when you want something flavorful yet easy to prepare, making it ideal for a weeknight dinner or a meal prep option.

The base of this dish is the couscous, which cooks in just minutes. Couscous has a light, delicate texture that soaks up the spices and chicken juices beautifully, making it the perfect partner for the zesty flavors in the dish. To prepare, simply cook the couscous according to package instructions, then fluff with a fork to separate the grains.

For the chicken, boneless, skinless thighs or breasts work well, thighs tend to stay juicier and more tender, but either will work. Season the chicken generously with spices like cumin, paprika, coriander, chili powder, and a pinch of cayenne for heat. Sauté the chicken in a hot pan with a little oil until golden and cooked through, then set it aside to rest before slicing it into thin strips.

While the chicken rests, make a quick spice blend or sauce. You can sauté onions, garlic, and bell peppers for added flavor, then deglaze the pan with a splash of chicken broth or tomato sauce to bring everything together. Stir in a bit of lemon juice or fresh herbs like cilantro or parsley for brightness, and season with salt and pepper to taste.

Once everything is ready, toss the chicken and sauce with the cooked couscous, mixing until everything is well-combined. If you prefer a creamier texture, you can stir in a spoonful of yogurt or a drizzle of olive oil.

This spicy chicken couscous is incredibly customizable, you can add vegetables like zucchini, tomatoes, or spinach for extra color and nutrition, or even a sprinkle of feta or goat cheese for richness.

Serve it up with a side of crispy pita bread or a fresh cucumber salad, and you’ve got a balanced, flavorful meal that’s both comforting and light. Perfectly spiced and easy to make, this dish will quickly become a go-to in your weeknight dinner rotation.

I don’t think cous cous is a good side for chicken. Should’ve used rice or something. Not impressed.

I think the chicken can be a bit tricky to cook just right, especially on the grill. Did you use a meat thermometer? It can really help!

  27. 2 stars
What’s cous cous? Is it healthy? I just boiled the chicken and served it plain. Probably should’ve followed the recipe.

  28. 1 star
This was too much work for me. I’m used to one-pot meals! Sorry, not for me.

    1. User avatar aleisha.kuvalis says:

I get that, some recipes are just too much. One-pot meals are lifesavers! But this one does sound yummy if you’re up for it next time!

I don’t have chicken broth, can I use water? I hope that doesn’t mess up the flavor.

    1. 2 stars
Water?? Seriously? That’s like making a cake without sugar! You sure about that? 🤔

    2. User avatar lovella.gibson says:

      4 stars
Yes, you can use water instead of chicken broth! It might be a bit less flavorful, but the spices from the chicken will help. Just make sure to season it well! 😊

  30. User avatar annemarie.hessel says:

    4 stars
Good recipe, but I added spinach and mushrooms because I like those better than just plain couscous.

Why do you need all those spices? Chicken can be good without all that fuss.

    1. 4 stars
But like, more spices = more better, right? Chicken can be plain but that’s why they have all those cool spices!

    2. User avatar keila.champlin49 says:

      5 stars
I disagree! Those spices really bring out the flavors. Don’t knock it till you try it!

  39. User avatar melinda.willms1978 says:

This was so good! The spicy kick was just perfect. Will definitely make it again.

I’m skeptical about grilling 6-8 minutes per side without checking thickness. Mine was thinner so it dried out a little. Would grill watch it next time.

  41. User avatar britt.willms86 says:

    4 stars
LOL, I didn’t have cous cous, so I used rice instead. It still turned out great.

    1. 5 stars
Rice is always a good substitute! Glad it turned out well for you!

    1. 4 stars
Hey, grilling can be tricky! Glad it tasted good in the end. Just keep practicing, you’ll get the hang of it!

    2. 2 stars
Messy is totally normal! Just don’t forget to watch the chicken so it don’t burn next time. What’s cous cous anyway?

  43. User avatar yelena.hermann78 says:

    5 stars
This recipe was amazing! The spices really give it a kick. My family loved it. Definitely making it again!

  47. User avatar danille.runte1966 says:

Ain’t we supposed to grill the chicken longer? I did and it was still pink inside. Stay safe people.

    1. User avatar Eugena Bauch says:

      3 stars
Nah, I think it was just your grill! Mine turned out perfectly cooked. Maybe you just need to grill it a bit longer, that’s all.

    2. User avatar young.wiegand says:

      4 stars
Yeah, grilling can be tricky sometimes! Maybe try using a meat thermometer next time? Chicken should reach 165°F inside to be safe! Stay cautious!

  48. User avatar Humma Kavula says:

    4 stars
This is the first time I grilled chicken without it sticking to the grates. Resting 5 minutes helped a lot—juicy slices!

  49. User avatar rich.landlord says:

    3 stars
I followed it pretty closely, but my cous cous came out a little clumpy. Maybe I didn’t fluff enough after the 5-minute rest. Still tasted good though.

    1. User avatar carlton.walker34 says:

      3 stars
Clumpy cous cous is normal lol. Next time just add more broth? Also you said grill—could’ve been too hot and dried the cous cous? Mine always turns out fine tho.

    2. User avatar cristopher.armstrong1 says:

      5 stars
I’ve had that happen too—usually it’s not fluffing right after the 5-minute stand. Did you fluff with the lid off and kinda break up any steam clumps?

  50. User avatar maye.senger48 says:

    5 stars
Delicious! Even my kids liked it! Will share the recipe with my friends.

  51. 3 stars
It was easy to follow but I burn my chicken. Should’ve watched it closer! Need more practice grilling.

  52. 1 star
The chicken was dry… couldn’t get it right. Followed the recipe step by step. Disappointed. 1 star.

    1. User avatar marquis.schuster52 says:

      4 stars
I’m sorry to hear that! Maybe it was overcooked? Chicken can be tricky sometimes. I hope you give it another try!

    2. User avatar darcy.leuschke1957 says:

      2 stars
1 star? That’s harsh. Did you really follow the instructions? I never had a dry chicken with this recipe.

  53. User avatar barbie.volkman60 says:

How do I cook couscous??! I just boiled some water and dumped it in, but it was mushy. Help!

  54. 2 stars
didn’t have chicken broth, used water instead. Not sure if that was smart, it was kinda bland.

  55. User avatar stanton.skiles1985 says:

    4 stars
Pretty solid recipe. I used a bit less cayenne because my family can’t handle spicy, but it still tasted great. Cilantro at the end really brightens it up.

  56. 4 stars
Easy peasy! I made it in like 30 minutes, but forgot the cilantro.

  57. 2 stars
Meh, nothing special. Just chicken and cous cous… I expected more flavor.

  58. User avatar alan.lemke64 says:

    2 stars
I don’t know about cayenne pepper. Seems too spicy for my taste. 2 stars.

  59. User avatar Michael83 says:

    5 stars
Amazing! The chicken was super juicy, and the couscous was like fluffy clouds. Will make again.

    1. User avatar rick.fadel10 says:

      5 stars
I totally agree! This recipe is a winner! The chicken really does turn out juicy, and the couscous is so light. Good call on making it again!

    2. User avatar salvatore.hoppe2019 says:

      3 stars
Looks good, but I don’t know if I trust the grilling part. What if the chicken gets all dry on the grill? I prefer oven baking.

  60. User avatar olivia.champlin says:

    3 stars
I dunno, I think the cayenne pepper is too much for me. Next time I’ll cut it down.
