Mummy Hot Dogs

October 28, 2024

Mummy Hot Dogs are a fun and spooky treat made by wrapping hot dogs in crescent roll dough to resemble classic mummies. Perfect for Halloween festivities or a themed party.

Mummy Hot Dogs are a playful, spooky, and irresistibly delicious treat that’s perfect for Halloween parties, family gatherings, or festive snacks. Wrapped in strips of dough to resemble little mummies, these savory bites are as fun to look at as they are to eat. They capture the Halloween spirit without being overly complicated, making them a favorite for both kids and adults.

The charm of mummy hot dogs comes from their clever yet simple design. Each hot dog is wrapped with thin strips of dough, usually crescent roll dough, puff pastry, or pizza dough, to mimic the look of ancient mummy bandages. Once baked, the dough turns golden and flaky while the hot dogs stay juicy inside, creating a perfect combination of textures.

Adding little eyes is what truly brings the mummies to life. Small dots of mustard, ketchup, or edible candy eyes placed between the dough strips give each mummy a quirky personality. Some look surprised, others silly or spooky, which adds an extra layer of fun, especially for kids who love picking their favorite faces.

These treats are not only adorable but also practical for parties. They’re easy to make, easy to serve, and require no utensils, perfect finger food for mingling guests. They also pair well with a variety of dips like ketchup, mustard, cheese sauce, or spicy mayo, adding extra flavor to each bite.

Mummy Hot Dogs are a fantastic kitchen activity for families. Kids can help with wrapping the dough and placing the eyes, turning prep time into a fun Halloween tradition. Whether served as appetizers, snacks, or part of a spooky dinner, these little mummies are guaranteed to steal the spotlight at any Halloween gathering.

My dough burnt but the kids still ate them, haha. Good recipe.

These were kinda lame honestly. Didn’t taste special at all. Where’s the flavor?

375°F seems right, but 12 minutes wasn’t enough for my oven. Had to bake closer to 17. Still tasty though.

Mmmm! So good, but a warning, my mom said they were too much bread.

Easy and fast recipe, but what if I don’t have candy eyes?

  9. User avatar owen.mante23 says:

Honestly, I prefer pizza rolls over these, just sayin’.

  10. User avatar velvet.reichert72 says:

Quick and easy Halloween vibe. I used the whole tube and had just enough strips. Next time I’ll leave a bit bigger “face” space for the eyes.

My dough burned while my hot dog was still cold… not sure if I did it wrong or what. But still edible.

  17. 4 stars
Lol, my mummy hot dogs turned into zombie hot dogs. They look so scary. 😂

  18. User avatar brent.denesik35 says:

    2 stars
Not as good as I thought. The dough was too doughy, needed to be crunchier.

  19. User avatar jeffery.becker says:

    2 stars
I tried wrapping them and the dough kept tearing. Maybe I was too aggressive with cutting. Next time I’ll use gentler hands.

    1. User avatar karan.stark69 says:

      4 stars
Ugh same thing happened to me. I think the dough was too cold, so I warmed it just a minute before cutting. Also I might’ve cut it too thin… but 12-15 min made it nice anyway. Next time less aggressive, like you said.

    2. User avatar Sheh Rata says:

      5 stars
That sounds frustrating—gentler touch definitely helps with crescent dough. I usually cut the strips a bit wider so they have some “give,” and I don’t press too hard when wrapping. Hope the next batch cooperates!

  20. User avatar raymond.becker62 says:

    4 stars
My dog ate the hotdogs before I could wrap them 🤦‍♂️. But still, how creative!

I dunno, they look kinda weird to me. Hot dogs wrapped in dough? Not sure about this one.

  26. User avatar Mrs. Cleveland Heathcote says:

    2 stars
I don’t know about this. Seems a bit strange with hot dogs and rolls.

  27. 5 stars
Mmmmm, my family devoured these! Next time I’ll buy more candy eyes for fun!

    1. User avatar marty.swaniawski55 says:

      5 stars

But it’s soooo easy and fun! Kids love it!

  29. User avatar evia.willms64 says:

I couldn’t cut thin strips without making a mess. Also I think I used too much dough and the hot dogs felt cramped? Flavor was fine.

    1. User avatar Leto Atreides says:

      4 stars
Ugh, I feel you 😅 I always make a mess with that dough too. I’ve found it helps to cut the strips after chilling the dough 5–10 min, and using a light hand so you don’t overpack them—otherwise they get “cramped” and don’t brown right.

    2. User avatar Majikthise says:

      3 stars
Maybe your dough was a bit too thick. Also, I’ve heard you’re supposed to leave a bigger gap for the face—like cut the strips wider so there’s more room? My first try was kinda cramped too, but still tasty. Try less dough per hot dog next time.

  30. User avatar maribel.russel34 says:

    5 stars
Just 5 ingredients? Can’t argue with that! good job.

  31. 1 star
Honestly, I don’t like hot dogs that much, so I felt like I was eating regret. The bread part was good, but the filling… not my vibe.

    1. User avatar Jefferson Wolf says:

      4 stars
Totally get that—these are kind of “comfort food vibes,” and if the filling’s not your style it can feel like regret 😅 Glad the bread/dough part worked for you though!

  32. 1 star
Hot dogs? Seriously? How do you even get this idea? Pass.

  33. User avatar willard.runolfsson1979 says:

    1 star
Not my thing. Hot dog should not be covered in dough!! Sounds wrong.

  34. User avatar tissues_with_issues says:

    4 stars
Super easy to make! I added cheese inside before wrapping, delicious!

  35. User avatar jennette.kuvalis2 says:

    3 stars
I did it exactly and mine looked more like “wrapped sausage” than a mummy 😂 but the flavor is great.

    1. User avatar stanton.oconner24 says:

      5 stars
Wrapped sausage is still a win 😂 I’m glad the flavor turned out great! Next time just pinch the strips a bit tighter for a more mummified look.

  36. User avatar laverne.mante2020 says:

    4 stars
Perfect for Halloween! I added ketchup for extra ‘blood’ lol!

  37. User avatar aleshia.sporer says:

    5 stars
This is genius. I did the prep with my niece and we had a blast. Also, the instructions were clear—rare nowadays.

  38. User avatar katelynn.renner says:

    4 stars
Mine didn’t brown as much after 15 minutes. I think my oven runs cool. Still tasty though—crispy outside, warm inside.

  39. User avatar matthew.harber38 says:

    4 stars
Amazingly easy recipe! I had some dough left over so I made a few with cheese inside too. Yum!

  40. User avatar geoWizard says:

    4 stars
Cute, but too much work for hot dogs. Kids ate them anyway 😅

  41. User avatar shirly.keeling40 says:

Super cute idea for Halloween! My kids loved helping wrap the mummies. Will make again!

    1. User avatar lynwood.grady says:

      3 stars
This seems easy but, like, wouldn’t the dough be super hard to wrap? Just saying.

    2. User avatar willie.dickens1987 says:

      5 stars
What a fun activity! I love that your kids helped. It’s great bonding time. 🌟

  42. 4 stars
Really easy to make! I put mustard on the side and it was delicious! 🌭

  43. User avatar senaida.bruen51 says:

    3 stars
Not gonna lie, 12-15 minutes felt short. I cooked mine closer to 18 and the dough was way crispier. Still good though.

  44. User avatar yellowjacket says:

    5 stars
These are adorable! My kids loved helping wrap the hot dogs. Perfect for Halloween parties! 🎉

    1. User avatar neida.tromp says:

    2. User avatar Draugr Thrall says:

      2 stars
I dunno, it seems kinda silly to wrap hot dogs. Just grill them, right? 🤔

  45. User avatar quyen.conn60 says:

    3 stars
Didn’t turn out how I thought. The dough burnt before the hot dogs were cooked. 😩

  46. User avatar chante.haag9 says:

These are so cute! I made them for my kids and they loved ’em! 🎃

    1. User avatar damion.abernathy74 says:

I dunno, they kinda look weird. Hot dogs in dough? Is that really a thing?

    2. User avatar rosy.keeling37 says:

      5 stars
Aww, that’s awesome! Such a fun idea for Halloween! 🎉

  47. User avatar Falmer Shaman says:

Mummy Hot Dogs? My mom used to make this but with franks n beans instead. LOL

  48. User avatar harvey.emard1977 says:

    2 stars
I dunno, they look a bit too weird for me. Hot dogs wrapped in dough? 👀 Maybe for kids but I can’t really.

  49. 5 stars
Lol “mummy” hot dogs are genius. I didn’t have candy eyes so I used sliced olives—worked surprisingly well.

    1. User avatar frankie.shanahan92 says:

      3 stars
Wait, olive slices as eyes? That sounds kinda salty to me… but if it works, I guess I’ll risk it. The crescent dough should be the real magic here lol.

    2. User avatar weston.schaefer74 says:

      5 stars
Omg this is such a cute idea 😄 the olive “candy eye” hack is brilliant. Definitely trying that next time!

  50. User avatar faustina.dickinson32 says:

    5 stars
OMG, I love this idea! My friend made them last year and they were a hit.

  51. User avatar mckinley.stanton48 says:

    4 stars
Yummy! I added cheese inside the hot dogs for extra flavor. Big hit at my gathering!

    1. User avatar teresita.nitzsche73 says:

      5 stars
That sounds like a delicious twist! Cheese makes everything better! 😋

    2. 2 stars
Cheese in hot dogs? Really? Seems kinda weird. 🤔

  52. 5 stars
Mmmm, these are tasty! My family ate them all in like 10 minutes. 😂

    1. User avatar norman.harber says:

      5 stars
Glad to hear they were a hit! 🎉 My kids love them too, we do them for every Halloween!

  53. User avatar francina.bailey says:

    5 stars
These are super cute! My kids loved them! 5 stars

    1. User avatar Uh Shenlong says:

      5 stars
I made these for a Halloween party and they were a huge hit! Even the adults loved them. Thanks for the idea!

  54. 2 stars
My dough kept unrolling and I had to re-wrap half of them. Also 375 seems high—burnt one batch. Maybe my oven runs hot.

    1. User avatar Stan Dup says:

      4 stars
Ugh, that “unrolling” pain is real 😅. I’ve found it helps to only unroll/cut what you’re working with right then, and keep the dough cool. Also, if your oven runs hot, 12 minutes first and then check for “golden brown” (not just time) makes a huge difference.

  55. User avatar NAFO.SUPREMACY says:

    5 stars
Changed it up and added cheese. It was better than expected!

  56. 2 stars
Meh. Too much work for something that’s basically a hot dog in dough. Kids loved it but adults were like, “idk.”

  57. User avatar Ryan Shenlong says:

    4 stars
Yum yum! Easy to prepare for the kids. Wish they were healthier tho!

  58. User avatar NAFO.SUPREMACY says:

    4 stars
I skipped the eyes and added mustard. 10/10 would eat again, but the “leaving a small space open for the face” part was kinda hard.

    1. User avatar rosemary.morissette1972 says:

      5 stars
Ha, mustard might actually make it creepier in a tasty way 😄 I’m glad it still worked! The “small space open for the face” part always feels like a surgery job.

  59. User avatar irving.fahey6 says:

    5 stars
Easy peasy, lemon squeezy! My kids wanna help make them again!

  60. User avatar tai.rath2007 says:

    2 stars
Not really a fan of hot dogs. Can I use something else?

  61. User avatar geoWizard says:

    4 stars
The instructions are straightforward, but cutting into “thin strips” is subjective. I ended up tearing some dough. Next time I’ll make more uniform strips.

  62. User avatar bert.streich20 says:

    3 stars
What if I just used regular bread? Wanna try that instead… gonna be good? 🤔

  63. 2 stars
I tried making these but the dough didn’t stick at all. Total flop.

  64. User avatar Hotblack Desiato says:

    5 stars
Whoever thought of this deserves a gold star. The strips are forgiving and the golden color is perfect.

  65. User avatar danny.lubowitz says:

    3 stars
I don’t like hot dogs. Can this be made with chicken?

  66. 2 stars
I don’t get why these are called ‘mummy’ hot dogs. They’re just wrapped sausages…

    1. 5 stars
It’s a Halloween thing! They look like mummies, trust me, it’s a fun twist for the kids!

  67. User avatar Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz says:

    3 stars
Not enough dough for the hot dogs? Or is it just me?

  68. 2 stars
I dunno man, seems kinda silly to me. Just gonna eat a hot dog plain instead. Why wrap it?

  69. User avatar camilla.batz96 says:

    2 stars
I dunno, I think the dough was a bit too tough. Not my fave. 2/5

  70. User avatar latrina.mccullough says:

    5 stars
These were weirdly fun to make 😄 The dough turned out golden and the hot dogs were cooked through—my kids loved the mummy look!

  71. User avatar galen.schmidt2 says:

    3 stars
Mine came out a little soggy on the ends even though the dough was golden. Next time I’ll leave the hot dogs a tiny bit drier before wrapping.

    1. 3 stars
Mine did that too 😅 I thought “golden brown” meant totally done, but I guess the middles were. I usually squeeze the ends a little more tight and pat the hot dogs with a paper towel before wrapping—helps a lot. Also, candy eyes melting… lol don’t put the eyes in till the end, like right after.

    2. User avatar georgetta.mcdermott says:

      4 stars
Oh no—soggy ends can happen if the hot dogs release some moisture while the dough is still finishing. Your note about leaving them a bit drier makes sense. Next time I might also bake them a couple minutes longer or make sure the dough strips are wrapped snug with no gaps at the ends.

  72. User avatar basementDweller says:

    3 stars
Candy eyes?! Kinda weird but… also kinda genius. I used mini chocolate chips since I didn’t have the candy ones.

    1. User avatar yer.leffler26 says:

      2 stars
Candy eyes on hot dogs? I don’t know… feels like a Halloween prank. But if the crescent gets golden and the eyes melt a bit, I guess it’s fine. Mini chocolate chips sound like they’d be too sweet though.

    2. User avatar blondell.johnston57 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—candy eyes are weird in the best way 😄 I think the mini chips might work great too for a “stitched” look. Did you put them on right after baking or wait until they cooled?

  73. User avatar michelle.ernser2017 says:

    5 stars
These were super cute! The dough browned perfectly at about 13 minutes. I used the candy eyes and they turned out exactly like little mummy dudes. Kids loved them.

  74. 1 star
Y’all, why use hot dogs? That’s nasty. Just get a veggie dog maybe?

  75. User avatar carlos.harvey44 says:

    5 stars
These Mummy Hot Dogs are a hit at our Halloween party! Super fun to make with the kids.

  76. 3 stars
The dough got oily on my tray. Maybe I should’ve used parchment. Still tasted fine, just not as crisp as I hoped.

  77. 5 stars
Great idea for a family fun night, kids loved making them too!

  78. User avatar jackson.schamberger2011 says:

    1 star
Worst. The dough fell off. Never again.

  79. User avatar victor.abernathy1950 says:

    4 stars
I followed it pretty closely, but my strips were a bit too thick so it took longer than 15 minutes. Still turned out tasty though—candy eyes were a hit.

    1. User avatar Miss Deborah Paucek says:

      4 stars
Mine too—mine took longer than 15 min last time. I think my oven runs cold. Next time I’ll cut thinner strips like you said… candy eyes are weird but fun 😂

    2. 5 stars
That makes sense—thicker strips definitely slow down the bake time. Glad they still came out golden and tasty though! 😄 The candy eyes being a hit is the best part.

  80. User avatar zachariah.kuphal says:

    2 stars
Didn’t turn out like the picture. Got frustrated.

  81. User avatar jessenia.fadel1952 says:

    4 stars
Love this idea! Used puff pastry instead of crescent rolls and they turned out awesome! 🥳

    1. User avatar Edgar DuBuque says:

      3 stars
Puff pastry? Really?? I can’t imagine that it’s the same as using crescent rolls. But hey, if you liked it, that’s what matters!

    2. User avatar blake.emard12 says:

      5 stars
That’s a great twist on the recipe! Puff pastry would definitely give it a flakier texture. Thanks for sharing your experience!

  82. 5 stars
Really good comfort food. The golden crust + hot dog combo hits. The mummy face design is the only reason I’m willing to cook anything on a school night.

  83. User avatar lyle.boehm54 says:

    5 stars
Mummy hot dogs? LOL! My kids just call it spooky hot dog. 😂

  84. 3 stars
Hot dogs in dough? Sounds weird. Not sure if I’d want to try it.

  85. User avatar genevie.windler says:

    3 stars
I wish there was a vegan version. Hot dogs are not my jam!

  86. User avatar angelyn.reinger86 says:

    4 stars
Okay, but why candy eyes? I skipped them and it still worked. My kid thought they looked like mozzarella sticks with attitude.

  87. 4 stars
Wow these look scary but in a good way! Perfect for Halloween party!

    1. User avatar daryl.bernier1998 says:

      5 stars
These are so cute! Can’t wait to make them for my kids! 🎃

  88. User avatar lanny.conroy says:

    5 stars
These are adorable! I made them for my niece’s Halloween party and they disappeared fast. The dough strips are way easier than I thought.

  89. User avatar Al Kaholic says:

    3 stars
Not gonna lie, I expected it to be harder. It’s basically crescent dough + hot dogs, which is fine, but it felt a little too easy for the hype. Candy eyes were a fun touch.

    1. User avatar kisha.zboncak says:

      3 stars
Harder? Nah lol it’s literally wrap and bake. I did mine at like 400 though and it got a little too dark. Candy eyes melt if you leave em in too long, so add after. Still tastes good.

    2. User avatar Oolon Colluphid says:

      4 stars
I totally get what you mean—when something’s this easy, it’s like “wait… that’s it?” But the golden dough + hot dog combo really does hit, and the candy eyes are an instant win 😄

  90. 1 star
Hot dogs? Seriously? Why not use real meat like steak?

    1. User avatar ferdinand.lind66 says:

      5 stars
This is a fun recipe for Halloween! Hot dogs are great for kids, and they love them. Who cares if it’s not steak?

    2. User avatar Photographer says:

      3 stars
I dunno man, hot dogs just ain’t the same as a good steak. This feels kinda lazy to me. But I guess kids like it?

  91. 4 stars
My kids couldn’t get enough of these! So easy and fun to make.

  92. User avatar mitzie.torp17 says:

    2 stars
I followed it and mine looked pale even after 15 minutes… maybe my oven runs cold? Also the face gap shrunk while baking, so the eyes didn’t sit right. Flavor was still okay.

    1. User avatar shelia.hammes says:

      4 stars
Hmm yeah 375°F but if your oven runs cold, those would definitely stay pale. I usually go closer to the 15 min (sometimes 18) and look for proper golden. Also, the “face gap” thing makes sense—if the dough expands/shrinks as it bakes, the eyes might slide. Next time I’d chill the assembled dogs for 10 min before baking so they hold shape better.

    2. User avatar smartestRedditor says:

      3 stars
I think your oven is fine. Mine came out pale too but I just kept baking till the eyes looked cooked 😂 The gap shrinking is because the dough is like… alive. Also candy eyes after baking, not before—otherwise they melt, trust me. Flavor was still okay though, so I guess it’s a win?

  93. User avatar Zaphod Beeblebrox says:

    1 star
why not just use sausages? 🤔

Sausages are already included in the recipe! 😄 The dough just makes them fun for Halloween!

I don’t get why you would wrap hot dogs in dough. Sounds weird.

I think it’s creative! It’s like a fun twist on a classic snack. Perfect for Halloween parties!

Nah, that sounds off. What’s next? Spaghetti tacos? I don’t know about this.

  95. 2 stars
These are easy, but my dough didn’t cook right. Maybe I rushed it.

Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about baking hot dogs in crescent dough… but wow. Great snack idea and easy with kids.

Candy eyes were kinda creepy in the oven (and melted a little). I might use chocolate chips next time instead.

    1. User avatar Piter De Vries says:

      5 stars
Totally get that—candy eyes in a hot oven do not behave. Chocolate chips as “eyes” sounds way less creepy (and less melty).

Delicious, but I think I overcooked mine. They got kinda dry. 😕

  99. 3 stars
I’m not sure about the “small space open for the face” part—mine all closed up a bit. Still tasty though, just not as spooky.

    1. User avatar ian.batz23 says:

      3 stars
Interesting… mine were all closed up too. I think the “small space open for the face” depends on how tight you wrap. Also I baked like 20 min (oops) and they still worked. Candy eyes were cute anyway.

    2. User avatar nikita.murphy2024 says:

      4 stars
Same! Mine sort of sealed up too 😅 I still got the “mummy” look, just not the creepy face window. Tasty wins though—next time I’ll leave bigger gaps.

Yum! I didn’t have candy eyes, but they still turned out great!

I think this is such a fun idea! Perfect for Halloween parties. 👻

  102. 3 stars
I tried it exactly, but my crescent dough didn’t brown nicely. Maybe my oven runs cool? They were edible, just pale.

  103. User avatar Saruman the White says:

    4 stars
So easy to make it’s almost cheating! Haha!

My neighbor said I should use pickles instead of hot dogs. Sounds gross but I’m tryin it.

  105. 4 stars
My dough tore a lot when I cut the strips, but I patched it and it still looked cute. Tasted like a regular hot dog with an extra-crispy wrap.

    1. User avatar Garlic Jr says:

      5 stars
That’s still a win! I always get tearing too—patching is basically half the “mummy” vibe 😄 Love that you said it tastes like a regular hot dog but with extra-crispy wrap. Did you bake them right when the dough was still cold?

These are super cute! Perfect for Halloween parties. 🎃

  107. 2 stars
It’s cute, but I don’t get it. It’s basically hot dogs in store-bought dough—call me unimpressed.

  108. User avatar Donovan Veum says:

Very simple to make but tasted kinda bland. Would add cheese next time.

  109. User avatar jerrold.ryan says:

These are adorable. The “mummy” effect actually looks pretty good even though I’m not an expert. My kids loved the candy eyes!

Who thought of this? 🤨 Hot dogs are not fancy, but I guess they taste good.

  111. User avatar carson.cremin says:

Mine look more like “wrapped burritos” than mummies 😂 but the flavor is still on point. I’d do them again for sure.

  112. User avatar Lon Moore says:

The dough browned really nicely, but I think 12 minutes was better than 15 for my oven. Also, cutting the strips thinner helped them wrap tighter.

    1. User avatar Li Shenlong says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—12 seems to work better in most ovens. I tried 15 once and they got a bit too dark, but cutting the strips thinner did make them look tighter and “mummified” 😂 Thanks for the tip!

Terrible idea—hot dogs and dough together sounds nasty. Also my kid said it tasted like pizza pockets lol.

    1. User avatar earnestine.farrell says:

      5 stars
Haha pizza pockets vibes is a win in my book 😂 The dough bakes up golden like a little crust, so it’s less “weird hot dog” and more fun snack. Give it a try!

  114. User avatar cornell.tromp43 says:

Easy and fun—way better than I expected from just crescent rolls. I’ll definitely make these again for Halloween.

  115. User avatar guadalupe.zboncak92 says:

This is fun, but also kinda messy. The dough strips slid around while I wrapped, so I had to fix them mid-bake.

  116. User avatar Norine Padberg says:

Not sure about the candy eyes—feels a bit weird. I used mustard for the face and it tasted better, honestly.

  117. User avatar mitzi.deckow62 says:

These are adorable and super easy for a Halloween snack night. The dough gets perfectly golden—definitely making them again!

  118. User avatar jarrod.pouros58 says:

Made these for Halloween and they were gone in minutes. The crescent strips make it so easy and they look super cute with the candy eyes.

  119. User avatar claudio.runte2002 says:

Cute idea, but my dough strips kept tearing when I tried to make them thinner. Still tasted good though—just more “wrapped” than “mummy.” Next time I’ll cut less aggressively.

    1. User avatar wellRespected says:

      4 stars
Oh no—yeah, that tearing totally happens if you cut them too thin or pull the dough too much. I’ve had better luck with slightly thicker strips and just laying them on top instead of stretching them. Glad it still tasted good though!
