Few drinks are as instantly recognizable, or as satisfying, as Iced Thai Milk Tea. With its bold orange hue, creamy texture, and delicate balance of sweet and spiced flavors, it’s a staple in Thai restaurants and street markets. But this crowd-pleasing drink is surprisingly easy to make at home, and once you’ve tasted a homemade version, it might just ruin you for the store-bought kind.
The base of Thai milk tea is strong black tea, often infused with star anise or crushed cardamom pods, depending on the brand or region. What makes it stand out is the addition of sweetened condensed milk or a mix of evaporated milk and sugar. This gives the drink its signature richness and silky body. Served over ice, it becomes a refreshing indulgence that’s just as welcome on a sunny afternoon as it is with a plate of spicy noodles.
While traditional Thai tea mix is often used to get that distinct flavor and color, it’s also possible to recreate the experience using robust black tea and your own blend of spices. The goal is to strike that perfect balance between strong tea, creamy milk, and enough sweetness to make it feel like a treat.
Part of the charm of Iced Thai Milk Tea is how visually appealing it is. When you pour the milk over the brewed tea, the swirling contrast of dark and light creates a moment of drama before it settles into its iconic orange glow. It’s a small ritual that makes the drink feel a little more special.
Whether you’re sipping it on a patio, serving it at a summer brunch, or cooling down after a hot meal, Iced Thai Milk Tea brings a little joy to the everyday. It’s more than just a beverage, it’s a moment of comfort and calm in a glass, one that invites you to slow down and savor.

This recipe is amazing! I love the flavors of Thai tea. Perfect for summer!
Yum! But I didn’t have half and half, used whole milk instead. Still good!
Glad it turned out good for you! Whole milk is a great substitute, I’m definitely gonna try that next time.
This is the best iced tea recipe ever! So refreshing!
Looks good, but isn’t Thai tea usually mixed with condensed milk? Just wondering.
Totally agree! I made this for a summer BBQ and everyone loved it!
Eaaasy to make, but you have to watch the steeping time or it gets bitter.
Uh, steeping too long? I don’t get it. My tea is always fine. Maybe you just did it wrong?
Thanks for the tip! I’ve made it before but ended up with a bitter taste. Will definitely pay more attention to the steeping time next time.
I wasn’t a fan. It was way too sweet for me, the sugar just overpowered everything else.
Idk, this seems too simple. Like, no condensed milk or anything? Still, it’s refreshing and I’m not mad. Could be better with more dairy.
Honestly it is pretty simple, but Thai milk tea doesn’t *always* use condensed milk. Half-and-half gives it that creamy vibe and the layering is nice.
Yesss! Half and half makes it rich. I’m not even kidding, this beats most places near me. Next time I’ll add condensed milk for extra sweetness.
I don’t get why people say this is the best tea ever. It’s just tea with milk?!
It’s more than just tea and milk! The Thai tea has a unique flavor that’s totally worth it! Give it another try!
I used 4 tsp of Thai tea leaves and the taste was too bitter for my liking. Might be the leaves I bought, but I’d recommend adjusting steep time or sugar.
Absolutely love this! Tastes just like the ones from the restaurant. 🥤
Pretty good, but my tea came out a bit too strong. I think 5 minutes was long for my leaves. Still tasty and the ice-to-cream ratio worked.
Super easy to make! I added some spices to mine. Yum! 🌟
So good! I added a bit of cinnamon for extra flavor. Thumbs up!
Iced tea should not have milk… but this is surprisingly tasty! Who knew?!
Not bad, but I think I messed up the boiling time. It was kinda bitter.
Yum!! 😍🍹
I don’t get the hype about Thai tea. It looks nice, but isn’t it just tea with milk? 🤔
This looks so refreshing! Can’t wait to try it out. 😋
I tried this recpie and it came out too sweet for my taste. Will cut down on sugar next time.
Yeah, the sugar can really overpower the flavors in this drink. Cutting back is a great idea!
I’m not sure how it can be too sweet? Maybe you gotta use less sugar from the start? Just saying.
This is the best iced tea ever! So creamy and delicious. Will make it again!
Meh. I expected more from this. My friend said it’s great, but I disagree.
My mom used to make this all the time! Brings back memories ❤️
This is so delicious! Tastes just like the ones I get at my favorite Thai restaurant! Perfect for summer.
I tried it and it was ok, but I thought it tasted kinda weird with that half and half. Maybe I’m just used to the restaurant version.
I’m so glad you loved it! It’s definitely a great summer drink. The layers look pretty too!
I made this for a party and no one liked it. Too much tea flavor, I guess.
Easy to follow. I’m not a cook, but I managed! Thanks!
It’s just iced tea with milk… What’s all the fuss about? Not worth my time.
I get what you’re saying, but it’s more about the flavors and experience, not just milk and tea! Give it a try, you might be surprised!
I tried making this and it turned out so bitter. Did I do something wrong?
This came out super fragrant and the layered look is so satisfying. I used a little extra sugar and it tasted like my favorite place.
I tried this but I think my sugar was too much (like you), so it tasted kinda burnt? Also I didn’t strain properly… still, the color was pretty. I’ll give it another shot with less sugar.
Totally agree—mine was *so* fragrant too, and that layered look is weirdly satisfying 😄 I did it exactly like the steps and it came out perfect!
This tea is so refreshing! Love the layers! ☕️
I tried it and it was amazing! So creamy and sweet. Definitely making this again! 🌟
Dude, I didn’t have Thai tea leaves so I just used regular tea. Still tasted good!
Ice tea?? LOL could be better but I reckon this will do.
I used to think iced tea was just plain, but this sounds really good! Gonna give it a try!
LOL, I don’t know about Thai tea, but I make my iced tea with just sugar and lemon. You don’t need all this fuss!
I didn’t have half and half, used regular milk instead. Still tasted great! Love Thai tea!
Really liked the creaminess. Never had anything like it before!
Quick question: 2 cups boiling water—do you mean boiling from the start or just hot? I boiled hard and it was fine, but I might try less next time.
This is the best iced tea I’ve ever made! Super refreshing and perfect for hot days.
I’m glad you liked it! It really is a perfect drink for warm weather.
Looks pretty but I don’t really like milk in my tea.
I was skeptical about this recipe, but it turned out pretty good. Just a bit too sweet for me.
Y’all, is that really how you make it? I thought they used condensed milk!
I thought so too! But this recipe looks good, I’m willing to give it a try.
Five minutes steeping worked great—tea color was perfect. Only tweak: I added the half-and-half a bit slower so the layers stayed more distinct.
I love Thai tea but this recipe was too sweet. Next time, I’ll use less sugar.
Layered effect was beautiful… for like 10 seconds 😂 Then it all mixed when I stirred (which the directions say to do, so fair). Still delicious though.
Omg same 😂 That layered thing is so pretty but it never lasts long. Next time I’ll try pouring the half & half slower!
I kinda disagree—if it says stir before drinking, then it shouldn’t be “mixed” like it’s a surprise. But yeah, still sounds tasty.
Delicious! Made it for my friends and they were all impressed. Will make again!
Wow, sounds amazing! I have to try this. Glad it turned out well for you!
I love Thai milk tea, and this recipe nailed the sweetness level for me. Next time I might use a bit less sugar since my tea leaves were extra strong, but overall great.
YEAAHH! This is my new favorite drink!! My friends loved it too!!
Layered effect? Mine mixed immediately 😅 Still tasty though. Next time I’ll chill the half-and-half first.
Tastes authentic to me! I swear the tea smell is spot on. Will make again for sure—so easy.
I tried it and mine was kinda weak 😅 maybe I should steep longer than 5 mins? Also I accidentally used brown sugar once and it tasted… different. Still not bad though.
Yes!! That layered half-and-half effect is exactly why I love this. Glad it tastes authentic to you—what brand of Thai tea leaves did you use?
Wow, this is soooo delicious! I could drink it every day!
I love it too! It’s so refreshing, especially on a hot day. I always add extra sugar though!
This tea is amazing! I never thought I could make this at home. Thanks for sharing!
I’m so glad you enjoyed it! This recipe is a real gem. Perfect for hot days!
Delicious! I added a bit of vanilla and it was next level!
5 minutes steeping might be a little short? Mine came out stronger after I steeped closer to 7–8. Still delicious though, and the layered look is nice.
This is exactly the vibe I wanted—sweet, creamy, and not too complicated. I used a bit less sugar and it still tasted spot on. Layering the half and half looks so pretty.
Yes!! I love when it’s sweet but still smooth. I also cut the sugar and it came out great—definitely going to layer the half & half next time.
So easy and tasty! I’ll def make this again. Thanks for sharing!
I followed the recipe, but I forgot the sugar. It was weird lol.
No sugar? That’s just wrong! Tea is supposed to be sweet. You could try honey or something instead.
Haha, that sounds like quite the adventure! Sugar really makes a difference. Next time, maybe write it down?
Wow, I can’t believe I made this! It was super easy!
That’s awesome! I love when recipes turn out great. Did you have it with any snacks?
I think the recipe is missing key flavors. Where’s the cardamom? Not authentic at all!
5 stars! ✨ So easy to make and tastes just like my favorite Thai restaurant.
What is half and half? Can I just use milk? I’m confused 😕
Thai tea leaves can be hard to find where I live, so I used a different blend and it wasn’t the same. The method is fine, but the flavor depends heavily on the leaves.
I added vanilla extract and it turned out so good. Highly recommend trying it!
Vanilla in Thai tea? That’s interesting! I might try it next time, thanks for the tip!
I don’t know what I did wrong, but mine turned out bitter. Too much tea? Help!
I don’t think that many tea leaves is the problem. Adding more sugar could help balance the bitterness.
You might have steeped it too long. 5 min can make it bitter, try 3-4 mins next time!
Not sure about the “Thai tea leaves” part—where I live they’re different, so I had to guess. I used what I had and it tasted kinda floral? Would make again, but I’d like more guidance.
I don’t know, maybe I did something wrong? Mine came out kinda bitter.
