Hot Cross Buns are soft, sweet, spiced rolls traditionally served around Easter, but their comforting flavor and aroma make them a welcome treat all year long. Made with warm spices like cinnamon and nutmeg, dotted with raisins or currants, and topped with a signature cross, these buns are rich in history and flavor. Their soft texture and fragrant profile make them ideal for breakfast, brunch, or afternoon tea.
These buns have roots in ancient spring rituals and became associated with Good Friday in many Christian traditions. The cross on top, made from a simple flour paste or icing, symbolizes the crucifixion, while the spices inside are said to represent the embalming spices used in burial. Over time, Hot Cross Buns have become more than a religious symbol—they are a seasonal comfort food beloved by many cultures around the world.
Hot Cross Buns are enriched with milk, butter, and eggs, which give them a soft, fluffy crumb. The dough is lightly sweetened and spiced, and studded with dried fruit like sultanas or currants for a pop of sweetness and texture. After baking, the buns are often brushed with a simple sugar glaze to give them a shiny, appealing finish that enhances their flavor and appearance.
They are best served warm, either fresh from the oven or gently reheated. A pat of butter or a drizzle of honey enhances their sweetness, while their pillowy texture makes them satisfying on their own. Some enjoy them sliced and toasted with butter for breakfast, while others serve them as part of an Easter brunch or a springtime gathering.
Hot Cross Buns pair wonderfully with tea or coffee and make a thoughtful homemade gift during the holidays. Their nostalgic flavor and festive symbolism make them a charming addition to any seasonal table, and their comforting taste ensures they’ll disappear quickly.

Yum! Hot cross buns are the best for Easter! Even my kids loved them. Gonna share this recipe with my friends!
I dunno, mine didn’t turn out right. They were kinda hard. Maybe I mixed it too much or the oven was too hot? I expected better.
Too much cinnamon for me. Next time, I’ll cut down the spice mix! But still edible.
Are these gluten free? I can’t eat regular flour. 🙁
The recipe is good, but mine got burnt on the bottom. Maybe check your oven temp?
I made these for Easter and everyone loved them! Will be a new tradition!
Uhh, why do we need to let the dough rise so long? I usually just bake it right away.
SO YUMMY!!!!!
I totally agree! They are my favorite treat during Easter! So delicious!
I mean… they look good, but I think they are too sweet for my taste. Can you cut down on the sugar?
They tasted fine but I don’t like raisins. Could use chocolate chips instead!
These buns are the best! They turned out so soft and fluffy. Will make again!
Can someone explain the purpose of the crosses? I thought it was just for decoration.
The crosses are actually a traditional symbol! They represent the crucifixion of Jesus. They’re not just for decoration, they have meaning! 🙂
Bun buns!! Super easy to make, my kids loved ‘em. Wish I had more raisin tho.
Glad to hear your kids loved it! More raisins would definitely make it sweeter!
Hot cross buns? Isn’t that what they sing about? I guess they are worth a try!
Yes! Hot cross buns are delicious and a great treat, especially around Easter. You should definitely try making them!
I don’t know, I heard that they can be kinda dry. Is it worth the hassle? I can just buy them instead.
I forgot to buy raisins and used chocolate chips instead. They turned out fantastic! 10/10
Chocolate chips? Really? That’s kinda weird but if it worked for you, great! I’ll have to try it.
I think I messed up somewhere, mine came out like bricks… guess I need practice.
Don’t worry! Practice makes perfect. Maybe try kneading a bit longer next time?
Bricks? Wow, that sounds rough! Are you sure you measured the ingredients right? 🤔
Yummy!
Yes! Hot cross buns are the best! Can’t wait to try this recipe!
Did you use hot water for the milk? I think that’s why it didn’t rise for me. Wasted 2 hours, ugh.
Hot cross buns in my house is a must-have during the holidays. Yummy!
Buns r good. I add chocolate chips instead of raisins. 😋
I was skeptical at first. Hot Cross Buns are only good from the bakery right? But I tried this recipe, and wow! So good!
Wait, do these even have to be made with raisins? I don’t like them, they ruin it!
You can totally skip the raisins if you want! I’ve made them without and they turned out great. Just add more spices for flavor!
But hot cross buns are supposed to have raisins! If you take them out, are they even really hot cross buns? Just saying…
These turned out amazing! The spices really made them special. Definitely a keeper!
I don’t know why mine turned out so dry… followed the recipe but something’s wrong!
Maybe try adding a bit more milk next time? That might keep them moist!
These buns are absolutely delicious! I made them for Easter, and everyone loved them!
I followed the recipe but my buns came out flat. What went wrong? Did I knead too much?
These r da best! My kids loved them and ate em all! 🙂
