Greek spinach pie is a beloved savory dish that brings together tender spinach, creamy cheese, and flaky pastry for a comforting, flavorful experience. Known in many cultures, especially Greek cuisine where it’s called spanakopita, this dish has become popular around the world for its delicious taste and satisfying texture. It’s both hearty and wholesome, often made with a mix of spinach, feta cheese, eggs, onions, and herbs wrapped in buttery phyllo or encased in a rich shortcrust or puff pastry.
The filling of Greek spinach pie is where the magic happens. Spinach provides an earthy base that pairs wonderfully with the saltiness of feta or ricotta, while onions or leeks add a mellow sweetness. A hint of nutmeg or dill can elevate the flavor profile even further, and eggs help bind the mixture together into a firm yet creamy texture. Baked until golden, the crust offers a satisfying crunch that contrasts beautifully with the soft filling inside.
Greek spinach pie is incredibly versatile. It can be served warm or at room temperature, making it ideal for everything from brunch buffets to lunchboxes. Pair it with a crisp green salad for a complete meal, or offer it as an appetizer at gatherings. It also makes a lovely vegetarian main course, filling and flavorful without feeling heavy.
Perfect for using fresh or frozen spinach, this dish is as practical as it is tasty. It can be made ahead of time, freezes well, and reheats easily, making it a great choice for busy schedules or meal prepping. Whether you’re celebrating a holiday or simply craving something savory and satisfying, spinach pie is a timeless option that always pleases.
Delicious hot or cold, it’s perfect for brunch, lunch, or a vegetarian dinner.
