There’s something irresistible about crispy fried calamari paired with a cool, refreshing dip. When you add tzatziki, the creamy, tangy cucumber yogurt sauce that’s a staple of Greek cuisine, the combination becomes a Mediterranean-inspired appetizer you’ll crave again and again.
The calamari is the star of this dish – tender, lightly battered, and golden brown, with just the right amount of crunch. The key to perfect fried calamari is in the batter: light, crispy, and seasoned with just enough salt and pepper to complement the sweet, delicate flavor of the squid. When fried to perfection, each piece is a satisfying contrast of crispy exterior and tender interior.
What really makes this dish special is the tzatziki. The cool, creamy yogurt is balanced with the freshness of cucumber, a touch of garlic, and a hint of lemon, making it the perfect dip to cut through the richness of the fried calamari. The tangy flavors of the tzatziki pair beautifully with the calamari, enhancing its natural sweetness while adding a burst of freshness.
This dish is perfect as an appetizer for a Mediterranean meal or as a light main course. It’s ideal for summer gatherings or cozy evenings at home when you want something flavorful but not too heavy. The crispy calamari and creamy tzatziki are also perfect for sharing, making it a crowd-pleaser at dinner parties or casual get-togethers.
You can elevate this dish by serving it with a side of fresh greens or a lemon wedge for an extra burst of flavor. For those who love a bit of heat, a drizzle of hot sauce or a sprinkle of paprika can add an extra kick.

- Enjoy!
Great recipe! I added some chili flakes and it gave it an extra kick. Sooooo good!
I dunno, I found the calamari chewy and the seasoning a bit off. Maybe I did something wrong, but I won’t be making it again.
Why do people eat squid? It’s gross! Can’t believe anyone would like this.
I tried this, but the calamari turned out so chewy! What am I doing wrong? 😕
I love calamari but never made it myself. This recipe was simple and satisfying!
Tzatziki sauce was too garlicky for my taste. Maybe just a little garlic next time.
Yum! The frying part is scary but worth it. I just used a pot instead of a skillet.
The ingredients are too Americanized. Should’ve used more Mediterranean flavors. I’m from Greece, trust me.
This calamari recipe is fantastic! The tzatziki sauce adds the perfect touch. Highly recommend!
I tried this recipe and it was sooo good! The tzatziki made it extra special! Will make again for sure!
I don’t know, fried calamari can be kinda chewy. Is the tzatziki really that great? Not convinced.
Is calamari even real seafood? I never see it in the ocean. lol
Calamari is definitely seafood! It’s squid, and it lives in the ocean. Maybe you just haven’t looked hard enough. 😂
I tried this but my calamari turned out rubbery. Maybe I overcooked it. Any tips?
Overcooked is usually the culprit. Try frying for just 1-2 mins next time! Keep ’em golden, not chewy! 😊
I had the same issue once! Maybe try tempura batter instead of flour? It could help!
Eh, I think fried food just isn’t my thing. The sauce was good though. Just maybe bake them next time?
I get what you mean. Baking could work, but it won’t be the same crunch! Love the sauce too, though!
Fried food is the best! But I guess baking is healthier. Still, nothing beats that crispy fry! 🤤
Fried calamari is my fave! But I think it need more seasoning, maybe chili powder? 🤔
Easy peasy! The ingredients are simple, and it’s so quick to make.
Totally agree! I tried it last night and it was delicious. The tzatziki is a game changer!
Looks easy, but I always mess up frying. My calamari turns out rubbery. Any tips?
Fried squid? Really? I thought it was just for fancy restaurants. Tried this at home and wow, it’s not hard at all!
Fried squid? Just seems messy and kinda gross to me honestly. I prefer eating it at a restaurant. Too much work for a snack!
Wow, I never thought I could make this at home either! Your post inspired me to try, and it turned out great! Thank you!
I used frozen calamari and it was completely different. Not crispy, kinda soggy. I guess fresh is best!
This was absolutely delicious! The calamari turned out perfectly crispy. The tzatziki adds a nice cool touch. Will definitely make again!
Fried stuff is bad for health. Baking might be a better way tho.
I didn’t think frying calamari would be this easy. I was a bit skeptical about the cayenne pepper, but it really added a nice kick!
I’m so glad you gave it a try! The cayenne really does make a difference, doesn’t it? Sometimes simple recipes like this are the best! 😊
Yum! I love tzatziki; I could eat it with anything. This combo is amazing!
Tzatziki is so yummy! Perfect with fried calamari, I agree! 😍
I love tzatziki but never thought about making it myself. Can I use sour cream instead of yogurt?
I added some extra spices to the flour mix, and it was a hit at my party! Super easy to make and taste divine.
Sounds delicious! I love spicy food! What’s your secret spice mix?
wow! these are so perfect for parties. Everyone loved them, even my picky cousin. 🐙
I’m glad they were a hit! Picky eaters can be tough, but this recipe is definitely a crowd-pleaser! 🎉
Just made this for a party and everyone loved it! Was a hit!
Not my favorite. The tzatziki was too watery, and I think I needed more salt.
This was gross. The texture of calamari doesn’t sit right with me. Never again!
Absolutely delicious! The tzatziki made it extra special. Perfect for my dinner party!
This recipe is awesome! The calamari turned out so crispy and delicious. The tzatziki is a perfect match! Will make it again!
I followed the instructions, but my calamari were a bit soggy. I think I need to fry them longer.
This recipe is too complicated for my taste. Just buy the frozen ones, they are much easier!
I subbed sour cream for the yogurt and it was still yummy! Easy to make too.
Easy peasy! My kids loved it! 🦑🎉
So glad to hear that! My kids also enjoy it. It’s fun to make! 🍽️
Mine turned out kinda rubbery… Guess I fried it too long? Still tasted alright but not what I was expecting.
Yum! So crispy! My kids devoured it. Will definitely make again!
So good! Will make again, I added more lemon juice and it tasted fresh and zesty!
Sounds good, but isn’t calamari kinda chewy? I don’t know if lemon can fix that. 🤔
I love how you made it your own with the extra lemon juice! It really does add that zesty kick! What other changes did you make?
Used shrimp instead of calamari. Not sure if that counts, but it was good! LOL.
Way too much oil! Just a little drizzle woulda been fine. 😡
This recipe is amazing! Fried calamari is my favorite and your tzatziki is perfect! Thank you!
