Easy Spaghetti Bolognese

October 3, 2024

Spaghetti Bolognese is a beloved classic that combines rich, savory flavors with a simple, satisfying pasta dish. This easy version of the traditional Italian favorite is perfect for busy weeknights when you want a comforting, hearty meal without spending hours in the kitchen. With just a few ingredients, you can create a rich, meaty sauce that’s full of flavor, and it pairs perfectly with al dente spaghetti for a meal that everyone will love.

The key to a delicious Bolognese sauce lies in the combination of ground beef, tomatoes, onions, garlic, and a medley of herbs. The sauce is simmered slowly, allowing the flavors to develop and meld together into a savory, comforting mixture. The tomatoes add a subtle sweetness and acidity that balances the richness of the meat, while the garlic and onion bring depth and aroma. A splash of red wine (or broth) can be added to enhance the sauce’s flavor, making it even more robust.

What makes this recipe easy is the fact that it requires minimal prep time and can be made in one pot, which means fewer dishes to clean up afterward. The sauce simmers while you cook the spaghetti, making the process quick and efficient. Once the pasta is ready, simply toss it with the Bolognese sauce and top with freshly grated Parmesan cheese for an extra burst of flavor.

While the basic recipe is delicious on its own, you can easily customize it to suit your taste. Add some chopped vegetables, like carrots or bell peppers, for extra nutrition and texture. For a spicy kick, sprinkle in some red pepper flakes. If you prefer a smoother sauce, feel free to blend it slightly for a more velvety texture.

Spaghetti Bolognese is a meal that brings people together and satisfies everyone at the table. Whether you’re serving it to family, friends, or just enjoying a quiet meal at home, this easy version of the classic dish will quickly become a staple in your recipe rotation.

Easy to make but lacked flavor. I had to add more spices to make it taste better.

  2. User avatar Cassiopeia says:

Solid recipe, but I think 15-20 minutes is a little short if your sauce starts out watery. I simmered closer to 30 and it tasted more “real.” Still easy though.

  3. User avatar janelle.kuvalis1975 says:

    3 stars
The measurements are fine, but I don’t think “simmer 15–20” is enough if your tomatoes are watery. Mine took closer to 30.

  4. User avatar rene.auer1962 says:

    5 stars
Yummmm!! Spaghetti is my fav! This is now my go-to recipe!

  5. User avatar karolyn.carter says:

    2 stars
This didn’t taste like real Italian food, more like food my mom used to make. Not great! 🙁

  6. 5 stars
This recipe is the best! I used turkey instead of beef and it was still delish! 😍

  7. 5 stars
Cooked spaghetti for exactly the package time and drained—perfect. Sauce thickened nicely too. Will be my go-to weeknight meal.

    1. User avatar kerry.moore26 says:

      5 stars
Exactly like that? Love it—when the sauce thickens and the pasta timing lines up, it’s chef’s kiss 😄 Going to try this as my weeknight default.

  8. User avatar carlton.jones13 says:

    4 stars
Good flavor! Used turkey instead of beef because that’s what I had. Tasted amazing anyway!

  9. User avatar wellRespected says:

    5 stars
This recipe is fantastic! The flavors are just right and my family loved it!

  10. 2 stars
I dunno, my meat was kinda tough? Maybe I cooked it too long? Idk. Can’t be sure.

  11. User avatar isreal.sporer1974 says:

    5 stars
Sooo good! Best spaghetti I’ve ever made!! 💖

  12. 3 stars
Wasn’t that great tbh, the sauce felt a bit too watery for me. Maybe I did something wrong?

  13. User avatar cassey.jenkins says:

I don’t know about this whole ‘spaghetti bolognese’ thing. Why is it called that? Makes no sense!

  14. User avatar janene.hickle88 says:

    5 stars
Made this tonight and it came out sooo comforting. The sauce thickened perfectly in 18 minutes. I used a pinch of chili flakes too—highly recommend!

  15. User avatar bronwyn.stanton27 says:

Simplicity is the best! Cuz I don’t have time for complicated recipes. This fit the bill! 😊

    1. User avatar lemuel.hayes59 says:

I totally agree! This recipe is super simple and tastes great. Perfect for busy nights! 🌙

    2. User avatar Dr. Foster Hahn says:

      3 stars
I dunno, it seems a bit too easy. Are you sure it’s tasty enough? 🤔

  16. 2 stars
I dont like tomatoes, can you use somethin else? Like cheese? Lol

  17. User avatar christy.sipes says:

    4 stars
Too easy! I thought it’d be hard to make, but it was simple. Thanks for the recipe!

  18. User avatar jerald.kulas74 says:

    2 stars
Eh. It was ok. The oregano/basil combo kinda fought each other? Maybe it’s just my taste buds.

  19. User avatar emilie.witting92 says:

    4 stars
I forgot the basil and it still tasted good, maybe next time I’ll try it with all the ingredients lol!

  20. 4 stars
My family loved it, but I used turkey mince. Same method, just browned it longer. Tasted lighter, still comforting.

    1. 5 stars
Glad it worked for your family! Turkey mince can be a nice swap—just browning longer makes sense to keep it rich. Lighter but still comforting sounds perfect. 😊

  21. User avatar robert.armstrong30 says:

    3 stars
I followed it exactly and it was… fine. The flavors were there, but I wanted more depth. Next time I’ll add a splash of wine or a bit of sugar for the tomatoes.

  22. User avatar Max Quordlepleen says:

    5 stars
I made this for my kids and they loved it! Even my picky eater asked for seconds. Thanks!

  23. User avatar Didi Reelydoit says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but 2 tablespoons tomato paste felt like a lot? Mine turned a bit thick and tangy, so I loosened it with a splash of pasta water.

    1. User avatar Snow Bear says:

      5 stars
Yeah, tomato paste can definitely go “too much” fast depending on how long you simmer. I’ve had it get almost candy-tangy if I don’t loosen it—pasta water is a great fix.

  24. User avatar Dremora Lord says:

    4 stars
Spaghetti Bolognese is my fave! This one’s good, but I like mine with a pinch of sugar too.

    1. User avatar Restless Draugr says:

      2 stars
Sugar? Really? I think that’s a bit weird for spaghetti. But, whatever works for you!

    2. User avatar Storm Atronach says:

      5 stars
I totally believe in using sugar in spaghetti sauce! It balances the acidity of the tomatoes. Great tip!

  25. 2 stars
Why does it say “easy” when I had to dirty like three pans 😅 also i don’t see cheese, so i added parmesan anyway.

  26. 5 stars
This is the best spaghetti bolognese I’ve ever made! So simple and delicious.

  27. User avatar shaun.kulas90 says:

    4 stars
Yum yum! Very good! I added some crushed red pepper for extra kick and it was amazin!

    1. 5 stars
Crushed red pepper? Sounds great! Gonna try that next time. Love spicy!

  28. User avatar tanika.runolfsdottir47 says:

    3 stars
I don’t get why people rave about this. It was ok, but kind of basic. Needs something more!

  29. 2 stars
Is it really Bolognese if theres no wine??? Anyway, it was decent.

    1. User avatar barton.hane96 says:

      2 stars
I mean, what’s the deal with not using wine? That’s like making a pizza without cheese! Weren’t the Italians drinking wine with their pasta? 🤔

    2. User avatar brook.jacobson says:

      4 stars
I don’t think you need wine to make it a legit Bolognese! But hey, everyone has their own tastes. Glad you thought it was decent!

  30. User avatar hershel.hoppe says:

    4 stars
Pretty solid and straightforward. I did have to simmer a bit longer because my sauce stayed thin, but that’s probably on me. Tastes like a “weeknight bolognese” for sure.

    1. User avatar keith.gutmann81 says:

      5 stars
Totally get that—thin sauce usually means it just needs a little more time (or a bit more simmering with the lid off). Glad it still tastes like bolognese though!

  31. User avatar dalia.effertz98 says:

    2 stars
I followed the instructions but my sauce was too watery. What went wrong?

  32. User avatar rory.hirthe77 says:

    4 stars
I followed it mostly, but my onion took forever—could’ve been my pan. Still, the flavor was solid. Would make again.

  33. User avatar jeanetta.morar says:

    2 stars
Spaghetti? More like spaghetti. Nothing special. 2/5.

  34. User avatar bari.connelly38 says:

    4 stars
Yum!! I used ground turkey instead and it worked perfectly. Healthy and tasty!

    1. 5 stars
That’s awesome! Ground turkey is a great alternative. I love when healthier options still taste good!

  35. User avatar kenneth.crist79 says:

Spaghetti Bolognese? More like spaghetti blah! I expected better. 😒

I dunno, maybe you just cooked it wrong? Spaghetti Bolognese is delicious if done right! 🤷‍♂️

Spagheti bad! I prefer macaroni. 🙄

    1. User avatar freda.stehr2007 says:

      4 stars
Macaroni is good, but you gotta try this recipe! Spaghetti rocks! 🍝

  37. User avatar silas.streich71 says:

    2 stars
This recipe is a bit plain for my taste. It needs something extra, like chili flakes.

  38. 4 stars
Easy to make and really good! My kids loved it! Will definitely make again.

  39. 5 stars
This recipe is super easy and delicious! My kids loved it. Will make again.

  40. User avatar edie.wyman60 says:

    2 stars
I don’t know… it’s missing something. Like, where’s the wine or the bay leaf? My sauce felt a bit plain compared to my usual.

  41. User avatar chadwick.oberbrunner14 says:

    4 stars
Yum! I added mushrooms and it turned out great! Def recommend this recipe.

    1. User avatar miriam.oconner2018 says:

      5 stars
Mushrooms? That sounds like a fun twist! I’m definitely gonna try that next time.

  42. User avatar christine.crist25 says:

    5 stars
Easy and quick dinner. Thx for sharing!

  43. 4 stars
not bad but FYI u need more seasoning!!! i added chili flakes and it was way better.

  44. User avatar clifton.ritchie80 says:

    2 stars
mhhhhh the garlic was too much! but overall decent dinner.. I guess.

    1. User avatar anitra.mohr0 says:

      3 stars
Two cloves is a lot? I usually put more! But, hey, if it was decent, then it’s all good!

    2. User avatar regena.dooley50 says:

      4 stars
I think garlic is the best part! Maybe try using less next time? But glad you enjoyed it overall!

  45. 2 stars
1 teaspoon oregano + 1 teaspoon basil feels like a lot for my taste. I’d cut both in half and add more salt/pepper.

  46. User avatar keren.gibson says:

    3 stars
I followed the recipe pretty much exactly, but mine came out kinda bland until I salted it more. Still good though—next time I’ll add a little extra tomato paste.

  47. User avatar susannah.rohan says:

    5 stars
This was super easy and actually tasted like something I’d order. The 15–20 min simmer is the sweet spot for me.

    1. User avatar israel.ortiz79 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—15–20 min simmer really makes it taste “real.” I didn’t think bolognese could be this fast but wow.

    2. User avatar rick.denesik63 says:

      4 stars
I tried it and it was good, but mine needed like 30 min to thicken 😅 Also I forgot the tomato paste once and it was… not the same. Still easy though.

  48. User avatar elias.connelly says:

    4 stars
Not sure why people call this bolognese—where’s the carrots/celery/wine? 😂 But as an easy spaghetti with meat sauce, it worked. Would make again for convenience.

  49. User avatar esteban.bernhard says:

    5 stars
This was super easy to make and tasted amazing! My whole family loved it!

  50. User avatar Falmer Archer says:

    3 stars
I don’t know, something’s missing. My sauce turned out bland, maybe too much water in the tomatoes?

  51. User avatar sheri.corkery99 says:

    3 stars
it was ok, but i didnt have oregano so used some italian seasoning, taste was kinda weird, idk.

  52. User avatar cheryll.nader8 says:

    4 stars
Kinda skeptical because it’s “easy,” but it actually tastes like real bolognese-ish. I expected it to be bland. Nope!

  53. User avatar Draugr Thrall says:

    5 stars
This recipe is so simple and delicious! My kids loved it! Will definitely make again.

  54. 5 stars
Soo good I ate two plates! Will be making this again for sure!

  55. User avatar marion.bernier8 says:

    2 stars
Lol, spaghetti bolognese? Wasn’t this just spaghetti? I don’t get it…

  56. User avatar willie.kreiger85 says:

    2 stars
Why only ground beef? Should be pork too, in my opinion. Also, simmer needs like 2 hours… 15-20 is not enough for bolognese lol.

  57. 4 stars
Easy enough! Spagheti was good. My onion took forever lol.

  58. User avatar liberal.hero says:

    5 stars
Made this tonight and it was super satisfying. The 15-20 min simmer really thickened the sauce nicely. I added a pinch of chili flakes and it tasted even better.

    1. User avatar ALTplusF4 says:

      5 stars
Glad it worked for you! That 15–20 min simmer makes a big difference—nice touch with the chili flakes 🌶️

  59. User avatar marshall.metz says:

    5 stars
So easy, I made it while watching TV! Will definitely make again. 🤗

  60. User avatar chung.cronin70 says:

    5 stars
Great for a weeknight meal! I always add some crushed red pepper for a kick! 🌶️

  61. 1 star
Why didn’t my sauce thicken? I followed everything but it was just watery! What gives?!

  62. User avatar antonia.lakin16 says:

    3 stars
Good but kinda plain. I think next time i’ll add mushrooms or maybe a bell pepper.

    1. User avatar Chaurus Hunter says:

      4 stars
I agree, it could use some extra flavor! Mushrooms sound great, I’ve done that before!

    2. User avatar jonah.hauck69 says:

      3 stars
Plain? I thought it was really good just like that. But hey, add what you like, I guess.

  63. User avatar ross.nikolaus1996 says:

    4 stars
Easy recipe, but I wanted to add some veggies like bell peppers and mushrooms. Can I do that?

  64. User avatar sebrina.cronin1957 says:

    3 stars
It was okay, but I think it needed more spices. I felt like it was missing something! 😕

    1. User avatar rolando.towne43 says:

      3 stars
I thought it was delicious without any extra spices! Maybe people just have different tastes.

    2. User avatar NAFO.SUPREMACY says:

      4 stars
I totally get what you mean! I added red pepper flakes and it was much better! 😊

  65. User avatar micheal.green1983 says:

    5 stars
I followed it exactly and it turned out great! My whole family ate seconds. Like, for once, nothing needed fixing.

  66. User avatar jacquiline.hartmann0 says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, I messed up the garlic—burned it a tiny bit. That said, the whole thing still tasted good. Also, my spaghetti was slightly overcooked but the meat sauce saved it.

    1. User avatar thaddeus.champlin2014 says:

      5 stars
Honestly this sounds like a win—burnt garlic happens! 😅 If the meat sauce saved the overcooked spaghetti, I’d call that spaghetti Bolognese success.

  67. 4 stars
Honestly easy and pretty tasty for a weeknight. I used spaghetti as listed and the flavor was solid. Would do again, no complaints.

  68. User avatar willian.cruickshank1987 says:

    4 stars
Pretty good, but I added a pinch of sugar because the canned tomatoes were a little sharp. Came out great after that.

  69. User avatar odell.kozey14 says:

    5 stars
Made this tonight and it was honestly so comforting. The sauce thickened up perfectly in 20 minutes, and the beef flavor really came through. I added a pinch of chili flakes and it bumped it up a lot.

  70. User avatar roberto.johnston says:

    4 stars
I think u forgot to mention cooking the garlic before adding meat. It really matters. But still, not bad.

  71. User avatar minh.labadie57 says:

    5 stars
This Bolognese is legit! Super easy and so delish! I added some grated parmesan on top. Yum!

  72. User avatar ed.corkery12 says:

    5 stars
Easy and quick recipe! My kids loved it. 🥰

  73. 3 stars
I followed the recipe exactly, but my sauce was super runny. What did I do wrong?

    1. User avatar Mr. Satan says:

      3 stars
I had the same issue. Try using less canned tomatoes or more paste next time!

    2. User avatar misti.kiehn says:

      4 stars
Maybe you didn’t let it simmer long enough? It needs time to thicken up.

  74. 3 stars
The sauce came out a bit too acidic for me, even after simmering. Next time I’ll add a tiny bit of sugar or more tomato paste—unsure yet.

    1. User avatar kasie.morar81 says:

      5 stars
Yeah, that can happen—canned tomatoes vary a lot. A tiny pinch of sugar (like 1/4 tsp at a time) usually fixes it without making it sweet. Also try simmering a bit longer, uncovered if it’s too thin.

    2. 4 stars
Hmmm maybe your tomato paste was old? I always add extra paste so it tastes less sharp. Or you can do a little butter at the end, like 1 tbsp, to mellow it. If you simmered only 15 mins maybe not enough…

  75. User avatar jamal.collier says:

    2 stars
Doesn’t seem authentic to me. Where’s the red wine? This is supposed to be Italian! 😒

  76. User avatar rossie.trantow36 says:

    2 stars
The ingredient list looks good but 400g tomatoes + 2 tbsp paste seems like it might be too acidic. I also used dried oregano from my cabinet and it tasted a little dusty. Still ate it all.

  77. User avatar detra.becker79 says:

    5 stars
Five stars for the simplicity. I’m a busy person and this hits the cravings fast. The garlic/onion step makes the whole thing.

    1. User avatar rebeca.hickle78 says:

      4 stars
Idk, I followed it but my sauce was kinda watery even after 20 min. Maybe my tomatoes were too runny? Still tasted good though. Five stars for effort 😅

    2. User avatar salvatore.hammes83 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—this is the kind of recipe you can actually fit into a weekday. The garlic/onion base is everything.

  78. 3 stars
Not bad, but I think it needs more seasoning. I had to add extra basil and a lot of black pepper to make it pop.

  79. User avatar jonah.damore89 says:

    4 stars
Cooked the spaghetti but maybe I boiled too long—still, the sauce was good. I think the ratios are pretty forgiving.

  80. User avatar kit.brown20 says:

    3 stars
I forgot to mince the garlic properly and it was more like chopped chunks. Still tasted okay though. Maybe I just got lucky.
