Cod and cabbage sauté is a simple yet satisfying dish that brings together delicate fish and hearty vegetables in one skillet. It’s the kind of meal that feels both comforting and light, making it perfect for busy weeknights or when you’re craving something wholesome but not heavy. With just a few ingredients and minimal prep, you can have a balanced, flavorful dish on the table in no time.
Cod is a mild, flaky white fish that cooks quickly and takes on flavor beautifully. Paired with cabbage — which becomes tender and slightly caramelized when sautéed, the result is a deliciously balanced dish with a mix of textures. The natural sweetness of the cabbage complements the clean, mild flavor of the cod, while garlic, onion, and a splash of lemon bring everything to life.
This sauté is all about letting simple ingredients shine. A little olive oil or butter in the pan helps develop a golden crust on the fish while softening the cabbage to the perfect consistency. You can season it with salt, pepper, and a touch of thyme or parsley for freshness. If you like a bit of heat, a pinch of red pepper flakes adds a subtle kick without overpowering the dish.
Cod and cabbage sauté is naturally gluten-free and low in carbs, making it a great option for those following lighter or clean-eating diets. It also reheats well, so it works for meal prep or leftovers the next day. You can serve it as is or alongside a scoop of mashed potatoes, steamed rice, or a slice of crusty bread for a more filling meal.
What makes this dish stand out is its simplicity. There’s no need for heavy sauces or complex methods. Just fresh ingredients, a hot pan, and a few good seasonings are enough to bring out the best in both the cod and the cabbage. It’s an easy, nourishing meal that feels both classic and refreshing.

Yum! Cabbage is so good. Coulda used more garlic tho, I like it strong.
I’m skeptical about cooking cod directly in the same pan as onions/cabbage, but it actually turned out great. Flavor spread well.
It was ok, but I found the cod a bit bland. Maybe try adding some lemon next time?
I totally agree! A little lemon zest could really brighten it up. I like your suggestion!
Bland? Really? I thought it was fine. Maybe try seasoning it better next time?
I had my doubts about cabbage, but this was surprisingly good! It’s a healthy option too!
Cod felt a little fishy to me (maybe it was my batch). Also thyme is strong—next time I’ll use half. But overall it’s a decent weeknight meal.
What’s the deal with thyme? Can I just use Italian herbs instead? Asking for a friend.
Thyme gives a unique flavor that Italian herbs can’t replicate. But if you’re in a pinch, you can try using them! Just don’t expect the same taste.
Super simple and healthy! I’m on a diet and this fits perfectly. Thanks for sharing!
Simple and quick! I added some red pepper flakes for a spicy kick. Yum!
Way too bland for me. I followed it exactly and it needed more seasoning. Maybe add more thyme or some chili flakes.
I agree—cod can be super delicate and this combo definitely needs a little more punch. Chili flakes or even a squeeze of lemon at the end would help a lot.
Really enjoyed this—simple and hearty. The thyme with the cabbage is a great combo, and the cod stayed flaky. Will make again.
Nice! I’m always worried cod will dry out, but 5 minutes a side seems spot-on. Did you add any extra pepper or lemon?
Totally agree—this is exactly the kind of meal that feels hearty without being fussy. The thyme really pulls it together, and I love that the cod stays flaky.
I dunno, it was kinda bland. Maybe needs more spices? My family didn’t really like it. 😕
Cookin is hard, i burnt my onions 😂 but still turned out okay.
The thyme + garlic combo smells amazing while cooking. My onion took longer to soften than expected (maybe my pan was too small), but it still turned out great.
Huh, mine usually softens fast, so “pan too small” sounds plausible. Did you cover it at all? I wonder if a splash of water would’ve helped steam the onion quicker.
Yes!! The thyme + garlic really does something special. I also find onion takes forever if the pan isn’t roomy enough—5 minutes turns into 10 real quick 😅 Glad it still came out great!
The instructions are easy, but I wasn’t sure what “move to the sides” meant at first. Once I got it, it worked—cod cooked evenly on the bed of cabbage.
I had the same question about “move to the sides.” Once you do that, the cod gets the direct heat and doesn’t steam—so it makes sense. Glad it turned out even for you!
Not gonna lie, I kinda just pushed the cabbage around and hoped for the best 😅 Mine was a little watery at first but still tasty. Next time I’ll actually separate it like you said.
Cod n cabbage??? NAH! Gimme meat! 😤
I’m not a huge cabbage person, but the onions and garlic mellowed it out. Would be even better with a splash of white wine or broth.
Kids liked it, which is rare. I chopped the cabbage a bit thinner so it cooked faster. Next time I’ll try smoked paprika instead of thyme.
I didn’t have cod, so I used tilapia instead. It turned out kinda bland. Maybe it’s the fish? Not sure I’ll try this again.
This was amazing! I loved the flavors. Definitely making again! 😍
I thought the cod was too fishy! But I like my food plain… maybe I did something wrong.
I’m glad you loved it! The flavors really come together nicely. 😄
Why do you add cabbage? It stinks up the place! I just wanted fish, not a veggie kitchen disaster.
Cabbage tastes weird to me, but the fish was nice. Guess it’s a hit and miss 💁♂️.
Yeah, cabbage can be a bit funky sometimes! Glad you liked the fish though! 😊
I don’t understand how you can not like cabbage! It’s healthy and yummy! What’s wrong with your taste buds? 🤔
Who even eats cod? This should be with chicken instead, way better! 🤨
Lol why not both? Chicken could work but cod has its own flavor ya know.
Cod is actually super nutritious! Healthy fats and proteins. Chicken is good too, but don’t knock cod until you try it. 🐟
This was so good! The cod was flaky and the cabbage added a nice crunch. Will definitely make again!
Why would you put cabbage with fish? Sounds weird. But I tried it, and it’s not awful, I guess. 🤷♂️
I thought the same thing! But it actually works. Cabbage adds a nice crunch to the dish. 😋
I tried it but the cabbage was a bit too soggy for my liking. Not my fave.
Wow, this was so delish! The cod was flaky and everything tasted fresh! Definitely making it again!
Glad you liked it! It’s super easy to make. What do you think about adding some lemon next time?
This recipe was super easy to follow! The cod was flaky and the cabbage added a nice crunch. Definitely making it again! 👍
Seems easy, but did you really get all the flavors? I tried a similar recipe, and it was bland! Just asking…
I’m glad to hear that! Cod is such a light fish, and with cabbage, it’s a perfect combo! What’s your secret to perfecting the flakiness?
Cod dries out on me sometimes, but this was okay. Maybe because I didn’t have cod—used pollock (same thing right?). Either way, pretty decent.
Pollock isn’t the same as cod but yeah it’s close. Cod dries out bc it’s lean—next time try pulling it a bit earlier and let it finish from residual heat. Also did you cover the pan at all? That helps.
Glad it worked for you! Cod can get dry fast—pollock is a pretty common swap and it usually behaves similarly, though it can be a bit more “flake-y.” I also find 5 min/side is close; thicker fillets might need a little less/more depending on the pan.
I think cabbage tastes bad… sorry. Cod is okay but I wouldn’t mix them like this.
I tried this but used tilapia instead of cod… still tasted good, right?
Tilapia is a good swap! It’s a bit milder than cod, but it works. Glad you liked it!
I’m not usually a fan of cabbage but in this dish it was alright. Cod tasted fresh, i added some chili flakes for spice!
Cabbage? Really? I find it tastes like nothing. Can’t believe you added chili! Cod is nice tho, I suppose.
I’m glad you enjoyed the cod! I usually avoid cabbage too but it’s nice it worked for you. Chili flakes are a great idea!
Not bad, but I felt like it needed more seasoning. Salt/pepper alone didn’t pop for me—maybe add chili flakes or a splash of something acidic.
This recipe is fantastic! The cod turned out so flaky and flavorful! Will definitely make again!
Why would you cook cabbage? It’s supposed to be crunchy!! Not sure about this recipe.
The cabbage wilted nicely, but I think 5 minutes per side might be slightly long depending on the thickness. Mine got a bit overdone.
Sauté is a fancy word! lol Just call it fry and I’m good with that.
Made this tonight—so simple and the cabbage really soaks up the flavors. Cod stayed tender and not fishy at all. Will cook again!
Seriously? You call this a recipe? It’s bland and there’s not enough seasoning. Needs more flavors.
Easy to make and healthy! I added some chili flakes for a kick.
Yummy! Who knew you could make cabbage taste this good!
