Chocolate covered cherries are a classic confection that combines the rich, smooth taste of chocolate with the sweet, juicy burst of cherries. These delightful treats are perfect for special occasions, holiday gifts, or simply a sweet indulgence whenever you’re craving something extra special. Whether you’re a cherry lover or a chocolate enthusiast, chocolate covered cherries are sure to satisfy your sweet tooth with their perfect balance of flavors and textures.
The process of making chocolate covered cherries is surprisingly simple, yet the result is pure decadence. The cherries, usually maraschino or fresh, are coated in a luscious layer of rich chocolate. The cherries’ natural juiciness complements the smooth, velvety chocolate coating, creating an irresistible contrast. The chocolate can be dark, milk, or white, depending on your personal preference, allowing for a customized treat that suits any taste.
To make these treats extra indulgent, some variations include adding a creamy filling like ganache or a sweetened liqueur-soaked center that enhances the cherry’s flavor and adds a touch of sophistication. The cherry is often encased in the chocolate, which hardens into a glossy, smooth shell as it cools, making every bite a rich, satisfying experience.
Chocolate covered cherries are perfect for gifting. Whether you package them in a beautiful box for Valentine’s Day, Christmas, or a birthday, they’re a thoughtful and delicious treat that’s sure to impress. They also make an elegant addition to any dessert table, adding a touch of sweetness and color to your spread.
This treat can also be customized to your taste. Try adding a sprinkle of sea salt on top to enhance the chocolate’s flavor, or dip them in crushed nuts or sprinkles for added texture. No matter how you make them, chocolate covered cherries are always a luxurious, sweet indulgence that never goes out of style.

Ingredients
- 20 Cherries fresh, pitted
- 200 grams Dark chocolate chopped
- 1 tablespoon Coconut oil optional
Instructions
- Dry the cherries thoroughly after pitting them to ensure the chocolate adheres properly.
- In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the dark chocolate and coconut oil together in 30-second intervals, stirring in between, until smooth.
- Dip each cherry into the melted chocolate, coating it completely, and place it on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Refrigerate the chocolate-covered cherries until the chocolate is set, about 15 minutes.
Honestly, I thought it would be easier. I ended up with a mess! Cherries everywhere! 😂
I tried this but the chocolate wouldn’t melt! What did I do wrong? Do I really need the coconut oil?
Yummy!!! Just divine! Or maybe I just really love chocolate 🤷♀️
These cherries are so delectable! I made them for a party and they disappeared in seconds!
Glad you liked them! They really are a crowd-pleaser.
I didn’t have fresh cherries, so I used canned. Not the same. Blech.
Canned cherries just don’t do the trick! Fresh is always best for this recipe.
I don’t know, canned ones aren’t that bad. Just give it a try next time!
choco chery nice!!! 🙂
Why do you have to pit the cherries? That seems like more work then it’s worth.
These were a hit at my party! Everyone loved them. 😍
Simple yet delicious! Just right for a sweet craving. I skipped the coconut oil, still turned out great!
Meh, they were ok. I expected more flavor. Next time I’ll try adding some salt. 👎
I tried this recipe and it was a total disaster! The chocolate wouldn’t harden. What did I do wrong?
Choco-cherries ROCK!! Will make again for sure.
Really? I found them a bit too sweet. Maybe next time I’ll skip the coconut oil.
Totally agree! Choco-cherries are the best! I added some sea salt on top and it was divine.
Would’ve loved a step about how to store them—how long do these last? Mine disappeared way too fast tho 😅
Good question! I usually store them in an airtight container in the fridge. They’re best within about 3–5 days (the cherries start to get a little watery after that). If you want them a bit firmer, keep them chilled and don’t let them warm up too long. 😅
lol mine disappeared faster too 😂 But for real—mine lasted like maybe 2 days in the fridge? I didn’t do anything fancy. Also I think if the cherries aren’t super dry, the chocolate won’t set right and then it gets gross fast.
I’m not a fan of dark chocolate, so I used milk chocolate instead. Still turned out yum!
These turned out way better than I expected—super glossy and not messy. I did mine a little longer in the fridge just because my kitchen runs warm.
Yes! “Super glossy” is the goal 😄 I’ve learned the fridge time helps a lot when it’s warm too. Glad they didn’t get messy for you.
I think the warm kitchen thing makes sense. I usually just leave them on the counter though… maybe that’s why mine looks dull and kind of drippy. Gonna try longer chilling next time.
Choco cherry good!!! 🍒🍫
These came out so good—sweet, a little tart, and the chocolate sets perfectly after chilling. I used dark chocolate chips and skipped the coconut oil (still great).
Love hearing that! I also do dark chocolate—makes them taste way less cloying. Skipping the coconut oil is good to know too; did you find the coating still stayed fairly smooth when it set?
Simple instructions! But my chocolate didn’t melt right, just ended up globby.
Sounds like the chocolate was too hot or maybe you didn’t stir enough? I’ve had that happen too. You gotta keep an eye on it!
Meh, it’s just chocolate. I usually just eat them fresh, no need for all this melting drama.
These are AMAZING! Such a perfect treat for any occasion.
Eh, I’ve had better. Dark choc is too bitter for me. Why not just use milk choc? 😕
I dunno if this is healthy or not… but chocolate is chocolate, right? Lol. Don’t tell my diet!
This recipe was disappointing. The chocolate didn’t stick to the cherries at all! Maybe need to dry them more?
I had a hard time melting the chocolate, it just kept clumping. Maybe I’m doing it wrong? 😅
It sounds like you may not be stirring enough! When melting chocolate, give it a good stir after each interval to help prevent clumping. Hang in there! 🍫
I always have trouble too! Once I even burned it 😅. Maybe try using a double boiler? That seems to be easier than microwaving.
They taste great, but why do you have to dry the cherries? It seems unnecessary.
Do I really need the coconut oil? I skipped it and they turned out fine.
You probably don’t need it! The chocolate should work fine on its own. Just make sure you melt it properly.
These are the best! I made them for my family and they disappeared in seconds!
Tried this with my kids and it was messy, but fun! They loved dipping the cherries, but too much chocolate for my taste.
Yum! But can I use milk chocolate instead of dark? Asking for a friend.
Absolutely delicious! These chocolate-covered cherries were a hit at our party. I used a little sea salt on top for extra flavor. Will make again!
Super easy to make, but the cherries I bought were sour. Next time, I’ll pick better ones! 😅
Who doesn’t love chocolate and cherries?! Perfect for date night! ❤️
Really? Cherries are okay, but I’m not into dark chocolate much. Milk chocolate would be better.
Absolutely! 🍒🍫 This combo is just heavenly! Can’t wait to try it!
Cherries + chocolate = happiness! 🍒🍫
One star deducted because I had to babysit the microwave. Chocolate got grainy for me at first. Still edible, but not pretty.
I don’t know, mine turned out kind of messy and the chocolate didn’t stick well. Maybe I did something wrong?
3/5. Too much work for small payoff. Also my chocolate kept getting too thick while I dipped, so I had to remelt a lot.
Yeah I had the same “thick chocolate” problem 😅. My first batch I didn’t dry the cherries enough and it seized up… then I remelted forever. Dry + remelt as needed is basically the whole battle.
Totally get it. I found the dipping part the most annoying—especially when the chocolate cools fast. I started keeping it warm between dippings (like quick 10–15 sec bursts) and it helped a ton.
These are AMAZING! I made them for a party and they were gone in minutes.
Not gonna lie I thought 15 minutes wasn’t enough, but it set fine in my fridge. I dipped slower and the coating was thicker.
These are amazing! Made them for a party and they disappeared in seconds! 🍒🍫
These are so yummy! I made them for a party and everyone loved them. Will definitely make again!
so easy!! but my husband thinks he can eat them all in one sitting! lol
Haha, he’s definitely gonna need some self-control! These are so delicious. Enjoy them!
Isn’t cherry covered chocolate just a cherry? This sounds silly to me. LOL!
Cherries? Never been a fan. But my sister loved them! So, I guess it’s just me. 1 star.
I understand, cherries can be polarizing! But I love chocolate-covered ones! Maybe give it another try?
You sound like you might not have a sweet tooth. That’s okay, more for us who love ’em!
Easy and quick. But I don’t get why they need coconut oil. What’s that even for?
Microwave instructions are fine, but 30-second intervals feel like it could burn easily. I did mine in shorter bursts and that helped. Would make again.
Chocolate and cherries? Sounds weird to me. Are people really into this? 🤔
I added some sea salt on top. OMG, a game changer! So good!
Just tried this recipe, and my kids loved it! Chocolate + cherries = perfection.
Soo good, but I used milk chocolate by mistake and it was still yum! More cherries next time!
Glad to hear it worked out with milk chocolate! I bet the cherries were even sweeter. 🍒❤️
Milk chocolate? That’s kinda weird for this recipe… I dunno, sounds like it wouldn’t taste as good. Dark’s the best!
I think chocolate covered strawberries are better, tbh.
Nah, cherries are way yum! Strawberries can be too sweet sometimes.
Chocolate covered strawberries are good too, but cherries are a nice change! More like a burst of flavor, right?
Not gonna lie, 15 minutes felt too short, but mine hardened anyway. Texture was snappy, like store-bought. Will make again for holidays.
Lol, melted chocolate everywhere! Why it so messy? But, they taste good tho.
I don’t get it. How can chocolate and cherries be that good together? I’m skeptical.
WOW! Best dessert ever. Sooo good! I’m gonna make them again next week!
I agree! These are so tasty and super easy to make! I love how the chocolate melts in my mouth. 🍫🍒
Really? I found them a bit too sweet for my taste. Maybe I’m just not a cherry person.
Super easy to make! I let my kids dip the cherries, and they loved it!
Too sweet for my taste. I think they’d be better with milk chocolate instead of dark. 🌟🌟🌟
These are so good! I used milk chocolate instead of dark and it worked well.
But isn’t dark chocolate supposed to be healthier? Milk chocolate seems kinda cheat-y to me.
I love that you used milk chocolate! It’s sweeter and makes it taste like candy. Yum!
Why do y’all use coconut oil? What’s that for? Seems unnecessary to me. 🤷
Yum, I can eat these by the dozen! Perfect for my sweet tooth. A+
I’m skeptical about dipping fresh cherries—mine always bleed. But it actually worked, just messy if you don’t refrigerate soon after dipping.
Yummm! But I used milk chocolate instead. Will that ruin it? Just a thought.
Just a word of advice: don’t skip the coconut oil, it really makes a difference in texture!
I thought chocolate was for donuts, not fruit. Weird combo.
These taste like fancy store-bought chocolates. I added a pinch of flaky salt on top before chilling and it made them pop.
The best treat ever!! I make these every holiday!! So easy and so tasty! ❤️❤️❤️
These turned out way better than I expected—super shiny and not too sweet. I’ll definitely make them again for gifting.
Kinda bland? Like the cherries disappear under the chocolate. I might add a pinch of salt or orange zest next time.
Meh. They were okay but too chocolate-heavy for my taste. Also my cherries were small so I ran out of chocolate sooner than expected.
Amazing!!! So easy and yummy. Best treat for a party! 🍒🍫
They look delicious but how do you keep the chocolate from cracking? Mine always does. 😕
I made these for my kid’s birthday and they were a hit! So good! 🎉
Pretty good, but my chocolate seized a bit—maybe my cherries weren’t dry enough. Next time I’ll blot them longer. Still tasty though.
This recipe is a game changer! My family devoured these cherries in no time. Especially great for holidays!
I tried this recipe but used milk chocolate instead. They turned out too sweet for my taste.
Sounds yummy! But I do agree, milk chocolate is way sweeter. My grandma has a similar recipe but uses white chocolate instead. I just can’t with that level of sweetness though!
I think milk chocolate might just be too much sweetness for this recipe! Dark chocolate balances the tartness of the cherries perfectly. Maybe give it another try with dark chocolate?
These are heavenly! Just made a batch and they vanished in minutes! 🍒🍫
Yummy! Just a bit too messy but who cares when they taste this good! ⭐⭐⭐⭐
This recipe is absolutely delicious! My family devoured them in no time.
I’m so glad to hear that! These cherries are a hit in my house too! 🍒
They sound good, but I dunno about that chocolate. Isn’t it kinda bitter?
I found this to be way too sweet. Not a fan of the dark chocolate with cherries.
Mmm, I’m not sure I did it right. Mine didn’t look as nice as the picture but they tasted fine.
Don’t worry! They may not look perfect, but as long as they taste good, that’s what counts!
Looks don’t matter! I mean, mine looked awful too but my fam gobbled them up. You’ll get better with practice!
Yum! My kid ate 5 in one go! This is now our go-to treat for movie night. 💖
Not bad but I messed up the melting part, didn’t read the recipe right 😅.
Not bad, but 20 cherries for 200g chocolate feels like too much chocolate? Or maybe I dipped them too thick lol. Still tasty.
They were ok, but the chocolate didn’t stick to the cherries very well. Maybe I did something wrong?
Maybe try drying them extra or use a little more chocolate? That helped me before!
These were a hit at the party! So easy to make and everyone loved them! 🍫🍒
They looked great, but my chocolate didn’t melt well. I must’ve done something wrong. 😕
Ugh, I hate when that happens! I think you might’ve used too high of a temp. Just try again, chocolate ain’t that hard to work with!
Don’t worry! Melting chocolate can be tricky sometimes. Make sure you microwave it in small intervals and stir well. It can seize up if overheated. You’ll get it right next time! 😊
Not gonna lie, cherries + chocolate is kinda my weakness 😅 The texture was great. I might add a pinch of salt next time just to see.
So easy. Kids helped dip. Half of them ate them before they even set 😅
Haha yes! The “before they even set” stage is real 😅 I love that your kids got involved—makes it way more fun.
So easy I tried it and my chocolate got all thick—maybe I didn’t melt the oil long enough? Still tasted good though. Next time I’ll dry them better.
This recipe is really simple! I can’t cook well but I nailed these! 👏
These came out way better than I expected. The “dry the cherries” step is real—if they’re even slightly wet, the chocolate gets weird. Mine set in about 20 minutes, but still totally worth it.
Yes!! The wet cherry problem is real. I learned the hard way—mine turned streaky and grainy. Now I pat them forever 😂
Mine took like an hour to set in the fridge… I think my cherries were too juicy and I didn’t dry them enough. Still tasted good tho. Maybe I should add more coconut oil?
I tried this and the chocolate slid off the cherries. Maybe I didn’t dry them enough. Also parchment paper is not optional in my house lol.
I didn’t dry mine extra long and the chocolate definitely slid off too. So you’re not crazy. Next time maybe add more coconut oil? Idk, but parchment won’t fix the moisture problem 😅
That makes sense—if the cherries are even a little wet, the chocolate won’t grab. I usually pat them super dry and let them sit on paper towels for a few minutes before dipping. Also, parchment really is the move 😄
Not bad at all! I used semi-sweet chocolate instead of dark and it tasted richer. 15 minutes in the fridge was enough for me.
I thought this was a joke recipe, but it actually works. Surprised! 😏
How long do they last in the fridge? Asking for a friend!
No offense, but cherries are overrated. I didn’t like these at all LOL.
Too sweet for my liking. Maybe use less chocolate next time?
But chocolate is supposed to be sweet! If you don’t like it, just eat something else. 🤷♂️
I get what you mean! I think less chocolate would still be tasty. Maybe a drizzle instead of a full dip?
Not as easy as it sounds. My chocolate didn’t melt right. 🙁
I thought “dry the cherries thoroughly” was overkill, but wow, it matters. Lesson learned. Much better coverage after drying longer.
Yes!! I tried it once without drying them super well and the chocolate slid off—total mess. Now I pat them down like crazy and it turns out way better. Great point.
Yummm! Chocolate and fruit! Who doesn’t love that? 😍 Perfect treat for summer!
um… I did step one but still the chocolate didn’t stick right. also 20 cherries sounds like more than 20? lol. flavor was decent anyway.
My hubby loved these! They are like little bites of heaven. Yummy!
Not sure I get the coconut oil part. The chocolate already melts fine by itself. Also, microwave intervals took longer for me—maybe my bowl is bad?
Quick and easy! I made these for a party and they vanished! Will definitely make again! 🍒🍫
Fresh pitted cherries are kinda pricey where I live… but wow. The chocolate-to-fruit ratio is perfect. I’m making these again for guests.
Just put them in the fridge for 15 min, after that they’re like popsicles of chocolate!
I used coconut oil (because why not) and it tasted great. The texture was smooth, not waxy. Will make again for holidays.
Love this! Coconut oil seems like a great tweak—glad it stayed smooth and not waxy. Definitely trying that for the holidays too 🎄🍒
Pretty solid idea, but mine seized up a bit when I added the coconut oil. Maybe my cherries weren’t dry enough? Still tasted great though.
Ah yeah, coconut oil can make the chocolate go a little weird if the mix gets too thin or if there’s any moisture from the cherries. I’d try drying them even more (paper towel + a few minutes air-dry) and also melt the chocolate in shorter bursts so it stays smooth. Glad it still tasted good though!
Just a tip: Make sure to use ripe cherries. Mine were a bit too tart.
Absolutely delicious! The mix of chocolate and cherries is heavenly. Will make again for sure! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I totally agree! The combo is just perfect. Can’t wait to try making these myself!
Can you use white chocolate? Coz I don’t like dark chocolate.
Super easy, but my chocolate seized for like 2 seconds before I figured out I was overheating it. Once I went slower it worked.
Who knew chocolate and cherries could be so amazing together! I’ll definitely make these again.
Not gonna lie, 15 minutes is too short. Mine didn’t fully set—had to wait like 30. But the flavor was great.
This is just like the ones grandma used to make! Brings back memories.
Mmm, I dunno, we never had these in my family. My grandma used to just give us plain cherries, which is kinda boring, huh?
Oh wow, I love chocolate covered cherries! They remind me of my childhood too. Grandma knew how to make the best treats!
