Caprese Skewers

March 18, 2026

Caprese skewers are a fresh, colorful appetizer that captures the essence of simple Mediterranean flavors. Inspired by the classic Italian salad, this bite-sized version combines juicy tomatoes, creamy mozzarella, and fragrant basil into an easy-to-serve dish that is perfect for gatherings, picnics, or light snacks.

To prepare, start with cherry or grape tomatoes for their natural sweetness and firm texture. Pair them with small mozzarella balls, often labeled as bocconcini or ciliegine, which offer a soft and milky contrast to the tomatoes. Fresh basil leaves add a burst of herbal freshness that ties everything together.

Assembling the skewers is quick and straightforward. On small skewers or toothpicks, thread one tomato, a folded basil leaf, and a mozzarella ball. You can repeat the pattern or keep it simple with one of each per skewer. Arrange them neatly on a serving platter, showcasing their vibrant red, white, and green colors.

For extra flavor, drizzle the skewers lightly with high-quality olive oil and a touch of balsamic glaze. The glaze adds a subtle sweetness and depth that enhances the natural flavors of the ingredients. A sprinkle of salt and freshly cracked black pepper is all you need to finish the dish.

Caprese skewers are not only visually appealing but also incredibly versatile. You can elevate them by adding slices of prosciutto for a savory twist or a pinch of chili flakes for gentle heat. They require no cooking, making them an ideal last-minute option when you want something impressive without spending much time in the kitchen.

Serve them chilled or at room temperature, and enjoy a refreshing appetizer that feels both light and satisfying. Caprese salads are a timeless favorite that never goes out of style, offering a perfect balance of flavors in every bite.

These are so yummy! Perfect for summer gatherings. I added some olives too.

    1. 3 stars
Olives in Caprese? That’s kind of weird but hey, to each their own! 🤷‍♀️

Omg yes! I love Caprese skewers! Olives sound like a fun twist! Yum!

    4 stars
Delicious! Made these for my picnic, and they were a hit! Will make again!

  3. User avatar toney.bradtke says:

Not sure why you would mix tomatoes, cheese and basil… Seems odd. Not my thing.

  4. User avatar Slartibartfast says:

    2 stars
Too simple. Needed more ingredients like avocado or something!

  5. User avatar kip.kirlin2020 says:

    3 stars
Pretty easy to make but felt like something was missing. Maybe some salt?

  6. User avatar thalia.altenwerth2017 says:

    yummm

    1. 5 stars
These are the best! So easy to make and perfect for parties.

    2. 2 stars
I mean, they look good, but aren’t tomatoes kinda boring?

  7. User avatar luciana.okeefe71 says:

    5 stars
These look so fresh and simple—like instant party food. The balsamic glaze really makes it pop.

  8. User avatar lanora.sipes says:

    5 stars
Caprese on a stick is genius. I used smaller basil leaves and it still worked perfectly. Would definitely make for parties again.

    1. User avatar alejandro.goldner2012 says:

      3 stars
Caprese skewers are nice, but I’m not sure about the balsamic glaze—like, doesn’t it get too thick and kind of messy on toothpicks? Still, I guess it’s “or to taste” so I could go lighter next time.

    2. 5 stars
Totally agree—caprese on a stick makes it so easy to grab and go. I love the idea of using smaller basil too; I bet it spreads the flavor better. Thanks for the party tip!

  9. 4 stars
1 pint tomatoes? I think mine were smaller because I ended up with extra mozzarella. I’m not complaining—just make sure you have enough basil too.

    5 stars

  11. User avatar nikia.goyette1956 says:

    4 stars
Balsamic glaze is doing all the work here. Still delicious though. I used the thick kind and it stuck better.

  12. User avatar francine.padberg1962 says:

    5 stars
These are basically guaranteed crowd-pleasers. I served them with prosciutto and everyone asked for the recipe.

  13. User avatar bo.greenholt96 says:

    4 stars
Simple but really good. I used regular mozzarella cubes because that’s what I had, and it still worked. Next time I’ll try the basil leaves a little more fresh.

  14. User avatar scottie.olson8 says:

    4 stars
Loved these! I used regular balsamic and it still worked. Next time I’ll cut basil leaves a bit smaller so they fit better.

  15. User avatar claudine.grady says:

    5 stars
I LOVE basil! Adds so much flavor to the skewers. Yum!

    1. User avatar clemente.leannon says:

      5 stars
Basil is the best! It totally makes these skewers pop! 😍

  16. User avatar elvie.lakin83 says:

    4 stars
The ratio seems spot on (tomato/basil/mozzarella), but my mozzarella balls were watery even after draining. Next time I’ll blot them longer so they don’t slip off the skewer.

  17. User avatar Barry Manilow says:

    4 stars
The basil leaf on mozzarella is perfect. I added a pinch of salt and black pepper—made it taste way more ‘complete.’

  18. User avatar cleveland.dickens86 says:

    5 stars
Yummm. Like instantly fancy-looking for zero effort 😅 The balsamic glaze makes it. I served with bread and everyone kept stealing them.

  19. User avatar nicholas.renner1987 says:

    3 stars
Not gonna lie, I think this is kinda basic. Like, it’s just Caprese but on toothpicks. Still tasty, but I expected more.

    1. 4 stars
Totally get what you mean—it’s basically Caprese in a portable form. But sometimes simple is the point, especially for appetizers. The basil + mozzarella + balsamic combo still hits.

  20. User avatar jolynn.abernathy1970 says:

    2 stars
Mine came out kinda bland even with balsamic. Maybe my glaze was too sweet. Next time I’ll salt the tomatoes or add a pinch of pepper, because right now it’s a little “meh”.

  21. User avatar Magrathean sperm whale says:

    5 stars
These look so pretty on a platter. I used homemade balsamic glaze and it totally made it taste fancy without much effort.

  22. User avatar kaylee.crist35 says:

    3 stars
I followed it exactly, but my balsamic glaze was way too thick and kinda gloopy. Maybe I needed to warm it? Still tasty though.

  23. User avatar alverta.koss26 says:

    3 stars
Balsamic glaze is doing all the heavy lifting here. Also, ‘to taste’ is vague—2 tbsp felt weirdly exact for me, so I’d start with less next time.

    1. User avatar renae.davis69 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—balsamic is the whole vibe on these. I also found “to taste” a little slippery, so I went lighter at first and it was perfect.

  24. User avatar kory.brown1990 says:

    5 stars
Made these for a potluck, and they were gone in seconds!

  25. User avatar Wonko the Sane says:

    4 stars
I thought I’d hate balsamic on fresh stuff, but wow. It actually brightened everything. Would make again for sure.

    1. User avatar Questular Rontok says:

      5 stars
Same here! I was skeptical too, but the balsamic glaze makes it taste way more “put together” without overpowering the mozzarella.

  26. User avatar rachael.roob65 says:

    3 stars
I don’t get the hype. It’s just tomatoes and cheese on a stick. Tastes fine, but not worth making unless you already have the ingredients.

    1. User avatar glayds.stamm2019 says:

      4 stars
Honestly I get what you mean, but the hype comes from how fresh and easy it is. If you use really good mozzarella and ripe tomatoes, it tastes way better than it sounds.

  27. User avatar britt.balistreri says:

    5 stars
Yum! 🍅🧀 Basil is like my fave herb, and it makes everything better! Will definitely make again!

  28. 1 star
Skewers? Isn’t that like a stick? Lol

  29. User avatar Miss Mack Blanda says:

    5 stars
So simple but looks fancy—perfect for parties. The balsamic glaze makes it taste like a real Caprese, not just “tomato on a stick.”

  30. User avatar Gurney Halleck says:

    5 stars
These were awesome! Super easy to make and a hit at my party.

  31. User avatar luciano.vonrueden50 says:

    4 stars
Delicious! I used pesto instead of balsamic glaze and it was great.

    1. User avatar malik.hickle30 says:

      4 stars
That sounds interesting! Pesto is a great substitute. I never thought of that!

    2. User avatar shaun.green38 says:

      2 stars
But like, isn’t balsamic glaze kinda key? Pesto’s nice but idk…

  32. User avatar larraine.borer88 says:

    5 stars
These are such a cute party bite. Super quick, and the basil + mozzarella combo is always a win. I used a little extra balsamic and it was perfect.

  33. User avatar leigh.schamberger says:

    3 stars
Too salty for my taste. Maybe less cheese would help?

  34. User avatar raylene.beier1972 says:

    3 stars
I made these with the ciliegine but didn’t have balsamic glaze, only balsamic vinegar. It was a bit sharp, needs reduction or glaze.

  35. User avatar magnolia.farrell says:

    2 stars
Not impressed. They looked pretty but tasted basic.

  36. 4 stars
Balsamic glaze is a must. I used a little too much and it got sweet-heavy for me, but overall good and easy.

  37. User avatar dominick.bayer1982 says:

    2 stars
Not gonna lie, I don’t get why people call this a recipe. It’s just tomatoes, cheese, and basil on sticks.

    1. 4 stars
Totally fair—it’s simple, but “recipe” can just mean the steps + proportions. It comes out looking fancy with almost no work.

  38. User avatar anita.parisian1973 says:

    2 stars
I don’t get the hype, it’s just tomatoes and cheese???

  39. 3 stars
Can you use any cheese? What if I put cheddar instead? 🤔

    1. User avatar Sand-Dial says:

      4 stars
I wouldn’t recommend cheddar, it just doesn’t have the same fresh taste as mozzarella! Stick to the recipe for best results!

  40. 4 stars
Love this! Quick snack that looks fancy! Who would’ve thought mozzarella could be so good with tomatoes? #Winning

  41. 3 stars
Caprese is always a win, but I think 1 pint tomatoes might be too many for the basil leaves unless your basil is huge. I had extra mozzarella.

  42. 2 stars
I didn’t have fresh basil, so I used dried. Big mistake! They didn’t taste right at all. 🙁

    1. 4 stars
Yeah, dried basil just ain’t the same! Fresh really makes a difference in flavor. Better luck next time! 🙂

  43. User avatar The Allitnils says:

    3 stars
Caprese skewers are basically foolproof, but I wish the mozzarella stayed drier—mine slid around because they weren’t fully drained.

    1. User avatar Hubert Bins says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—draining the mozzarella is the whole trick. I pat mine dry with paper towels and even let it sit on a rack for a few minutes so it’s less slippery.

    2. User avatar Quint S. Henschel says:

      4 stars
Mine slid too, and I thought it was the balsamic at first 😅 Next time I’ll dry them better. Maybe also use smaller mozz balls or press them lightly with a towel—unless you mean drain like, squeeze them? Probably works.

  44. User avatar halley.muller2023 says:

    3 stars
I tried these at a party and was like, wow, they must be super hard to make. But they’re not! Just get some sticks and fruit.

  45. User avatar irvin.adams1999 says:

    2 stars
Looks cute but honestly I’m skeptical. Also I used balsamic vinegar and it was too tangy—glaze matters I think.

    1. User avatar Emily Saunders says:

      5 stars
I get the skepticism, but these are pretty hard to mess up. The glaze makes a big difference—balsamic vinegar straight up can be way too sharp. I’d definitely use a thick glaze or reduce it a bit first.

    2. User avatar ambrose.lynch26 says:

      4 stars
Wait so you used balsamic vinegar not glaze and it was tangy? That makes sense. I think people skip the drizzle step too much—like barely anything on top. Next time just use the balsamic glaze or less balsamic.

  46. User avatar ArabianNights says:

    2 stars
Balsamic glaze is too sweet for me. I’d rather use balsamic vinegar and reduce it myself. Otherwise kinda basic.

  47. User avatar milton.stroman1957 says:

    5 stars
5 stars! so tasty and quick. Next time I’ll add a tiny pinch of salt on the tomatoes.

  48. User avatar sergio.schimmel1991 says:

    2 stars
Not gonna lie, caprese is kind of boring to me. Tomato + cheese + basil is fine, but I don’t see the big deal. The balsamic helps, but still.

  49. User avatar tony.dooley19 says:

    3 stars
I followed the steps but my tomatoes were kind of watery, so the skewers got soggy. Next time I’ll pat everything dry first.

  50. User avatar elaine.langosh39 says:

    3 stars
Easy to assemble, but my basil leaves kept tearing when I skewered them. Next time I’ll stack them more gently.

  51. 2 stars
Not sure about 16 tomato + 16 mozzarella + 16 basil… that’s like a very specific vibe. I doubled it and had to improvise sizes. Tasted fine, but measure-y recipes stress me out.

    1. 5 stars
Totally get that. I used the “16” as a starting point too—once you’re just aiming for 1 tomato + 1 mozzarella + 1 basil per skewer, it’s hard to be exact.

    2. 4 stars
I love the specific vibe though 😅 I count them out and it feels so satisfying. But yeah, if you double, just eyeball the sizes—still tastes like Caprese should.

  52. User avatar Random Dent says:

    1 star
I’m not really into these kind of appetizers. Guess I just like more spicy food.

  53. 5 stars
These were so easy to make and tasted amazing! Perfect for summer parties!

  54. User avatar wanda.koch says:

    5 stars
Flavor was on point. I’m surprised how much taste you get from such simple ingredients. Would definitely make for a party again!

  55. User avatar Rob A. Bank says:

    3 stars
Meh. I thought cherry tomatoes and mozzarella would be more flavorful together. Mine tasted kind of bland until I added pepper.

  56. 3 stars
Not gonna lie, toothpicks are tricky—half my basil leaves turned brown-ish while I prepped. Still tasty though. Maybe keep everything cool until serving.

    1. User avatar joe_banana says:

      5 stars
Totally feel you—basil browns fast if it’s warm or left exposed. I usually chill the mozzarella and keep the basil in a damp paper towel in the fridge until assembly. Works way better!

    2. User avatar ShanksOnePiece says:

      3 stars
Wait, toothpicks turned your basil brown? I’d think it’d be fine, like the tomato and mozz are the same room temp. Maybe you overhandled it? Next time try bigger basil leaves and don’t let it sit out.

  57. User avatar doreen.auer97 says:

    4 stars
Pretty good, but I’d say drain the mozz a lot—mine were watery and it slid around on the skewer. Also, I ran out of basil so I used spinach… kinda worked? Still tasty.

  58. User avatar steve_maga says:

    4 stars
Quick question: do you add balsamic before chilling or right before serving? I added it early and the basil kinda wilted (still tasted fine).

  59. User avatar anika.rutherford17 says:

    4 stars
I followed the steps exactly… and somehow my basil leaves kept sliding off lol. Next time I’ll pat the mozzarella dry and assemble more gently.

  60. User avatar Josh Abernathy says:

    4 stars
The measurements are super flexible, which I like. I only had mini mozzarella pearls though, and it worked fine. Would make again.

  61. User avatar alexis.roberts1982 says:

    3 stars
These fell apart a bit—my mozzarella was too soft. If you chill them first, they’ll hold up better on the toothpicks.

  62. User avatar essie.jacobson says:

    4 stars
I made these for lunch and my kids loved them. I don’t even think they noticed it was ‘healthy’ (which is funny).

  63. User avatar yoshiko.hessel says:

    4 stars
Super easy and fast, but I think 2 tbsp glaze might be a little too much if your basil is strong. Mine got a bit too sweet—still good though!

    1. User avatar boyce.goyette18 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—if the balsamic glaze is strong, 2 tbsp can tip it into “too sweet” fast. I usually do a lighter drizzle and call it done.

    2. User avatar anonymous_hacker says:

      4 stars
Wait 2 tbsp is a lot? I usually just kinda eyeball it, but my basil was kinda mild so I didn’t notice. Maybe try less if yours is punchy.

  64. User avatar lorette.bernhard says:

    5 stars
Delicious! I’m surprised how good balsamic + basil + mozzarella tastes together. Mine lasted about 30 minutes before disappearing 😅

  65. User avatar ellsworth.reinger56 says:

    4 stars
I love Caprese but I wish the instructions said whether to salt the tomatoes or mozzarella. I skipped it and they were a little bland, but adding a tiny pinch of salt fixed it.

  66. User avatar alexander.breitenberg says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about toothpicks and thought it’d be messy… but it’s actually super neat and fun to eat.

  67. User avatar halflife4 says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, I’m skeptical about balsamic on everything. But it worked here. Would make again. (Also basil got smashed a little lol.)

  68. User avatar bud.toy2007 says:

    5 stars
The flavor balance is perfect—fresh, salty, and sweet. I served them at a party and they disappeared fast.

    1. 3 stars
I tried these and they were… good, but mine got a lil soggy from the balsamic. Maybe I drizzled too early? Also I used normal vinegar and it wasn’t the same.

    2. User avatar rufus.oconner2015 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—those sweet tomatoes + creamy mozzarella with the balsamic is such a perfect combo. I love how quick they are too!

  69. User avatar rigoberto.rutherford says:

    5 stars
So quick and fresh! The balsamic glaze really pulls it together—perfect for parties. I used regular mozzarella balls and it still worked great.

  70. User avatar halflife4 says:

    4 stars
I followed the steps exactly, but my mozzarella was watery. Maybe I didn’t drain it enough—still tasted great though.
