Baked Apples with Nuts and Honey

April 29, 2024

When the weather turns cooler and the scent of fall fills the air, there’s nothing quite as comforting as a warm, baked dessert. Baked Apples with Nuts and Honey offer a simple, yet delightful treat that’s perfect for cozy nights in or even as a light holiday dessert. With the natural sweetness of apples, the richness of honey, and the satisfying crunch of toasted nuts, this dessert is an easy way to indulge without overloading on sugar.

The magic begins with your choice of apples – tart varieties like Granny Smith or Fuji work wonderfully, offering a perfect balance to the rich, nutty filling. You core the apples, creating a cozy little space to pack in a mixture of nuts like walnuts, pecans, or almonds. Toasted just right, these nuts bring a deep, earthy flavor that pairs perfectly with the sweet apples.

A drizzle of honey ties everything together, adding just the right amount of sweetness and a golden finish that caramelizes as the apples bake, creating a luscious glaze. Some cinnamon or a dash of nutmeg enhances the warmth and comfort of the dish, filling your kitchen with irresistible aromas.

Baking the apples softens their flesh to a perfect melt-in-your-mouth texture while the nuts remain crunchy, creating a satisfying contrast in each bite. Whether enjoyed alone or served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream, Baked Apples with Nuts and Honey are a versatile dessert that fits any occasion.

Not only is this dessert light and delicious, but it’s also naturally gluten-free and can be easily customized. Add dried fruits, a sprinkle of oats, or even a touch of dark chocolate for a little extra indulgence. This dish is as wholesome as it is delicious – a perfect way to enjoy the flavors of the season.

That sounds amazing! Ice cream makes everything better. Can’t wait to try it!

  4. 2 stars
Too sweet for me. Yall should try cuttin down on the honey. I barely finished one apple. 😑

  5. User avatar ALTplusF4 says:

These baked apples were amazing! My kids loved them and they are so easy to make. Definitely a 5-star recipe!

    1. User avatar irvin.skiles says:

      2 stars
Really? I thought they were kinda boring. Maybe I did it wrong? 🤔

    2. User avatar Tom Bombadil says:

      5 stars
I totally agree! These apples were so delicious. My kids gobbled them up too! 🎉

  6. 3 stars
The nut mixture burned a bit. Maybe I left it in for too long? I like it though, more crunchy.

    1. User avatar jeremiah.murphy30 says:

      5 stars
I think a little burn just adds character! Crunchy is good, right? 😄

  7. 3 stars
I don’t get the hype. They were okay, but nothing special to me.

  8. 5 stars
These came out so cozy and fragrant—my kitchen smelled like fall. I used Honeycrisp and it was perfectly tender by 40 minutes.

  9. 4 stars
They look pretty, but I bet you can make them even better with ice cream on top!

  10. User avatar frankie.zboncak says:

    5 stars
Easiest dessert to make! Plus, it’s healthy. Can’t go wrong with apples and nuts.

    1. User avatar Zaphod Beeblebrox says:

      5 stars
I tried this recipe last night, and it was sooo good! Definitely gonna make it again. Thanks for sharing!

  11. 4 stars
Easy and quick! I did not have cinnamon so I used pumpkin spice instead. Yummy!!

  12. User avatar vi.mosciski1952 says:

    5 stars
    Yum!

  13. User avatar joaquin.medhurst66 says:

    5 stars
These look cozy and perfect for fall. I love how the nuts + honey get all toasty in the oven—gonna try with walnuts.

  14. User avatar samuel.konopelski38 says:

    3 stars
Mine came out a little dry on top, even though I baked the right time. I think my apples were smaller? Also, I accidentally forgot to add the water to the dish at first 😅 Still tasted good though.

  15. User avatar Trina Woods says:

    4 stars
Pretty solid recipe, but I’m picky about nuts. I swapped pecans for almonds and it worked, though the filling was a little drier than expected. Next time I’ll add a teaspoon more butter.

  16. 4 stars
Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about baking apples with a nut-honey-butter mix… but it’s actually really good. Sweet, warm, and not too heavy.

  17. 4 stars
This is a classic fall treat! Made them last night and they went over well with my guests. Will definitely make again.

  18. 3 stars
Whole thing felt kind of fussy for dessert. Like, why not just sauté apples? Also 1/4 tsp salt seems like a lot but maybe it’s fine.

  19. 2 stars
I thought the apples would be sweeter with all the honey, but they were kinda bland. Not impressed. 2 stars.

    1. User avatar Draugr Deathlord says:

      4 stars
I wonder if you just got the wrong kind of apples. Honeycrisp are usually sweeter. Maybe try a different type next time?

  20. User avatar giovanna.reichel90 says:

    4 stars
375°F is good, but I think 45 minutes is optimistic depending on apple size. I used huge apples and they took more like 55. Still worth it.

  21. User avatar cortez.greenholt97 says:

    3 stars
Do you have to use honey? I don’t really like it. Can I skip it?

  22. 5 stars
Nut mixture golden brown is the goal, and mine did brown nicely. The cinnamon/nutmeg combo is spot on. Would absolutely make again.

  23. 3 stars
Not bad, but next time I’ll add more cinnamon. It was a little bland for my taste. 🤷‍♂️

  24. User avatar elouise.ryan71 says:

    4 stars
I added some raisins and a bit of orange zest. It was great! Definitely making again! 🙂

    1. User avatar Leto II Atreides says:

      2 stars
I dunno…raisins in apples? That’s a bit weird. Just stick to the recipe, right?

    2. 5 stars
Sounds delicious! Raisins and orange zest really add a nice touch. I’ll have to try that next time! 😊

  25. User avatar forrest.funk34 says:

    4 stars
Super simple and delicious! I used pecans because that’s what I had. Will make again for sure!

  26. User avatar geraldo.ziemann says:

    1 star
My kids didn’t like them at all. They said it’s like eating fruit salad but warm. Not trying again.

    1. User avatar jesse.grimes says:

      4 stars
That’s surprising! My kids loved them. Maybe they just don’t like warm fruit? 🤷‍♀️

    2. 3 stars
Fruit salad but warm? Sounds interesting! You might be onto something. I think my kids would enjoy it if I add some ice cream! 🍦

  27. User avatar katerine.damore40 says:

    4 stars
Pretty good, but mine took closer to 55 minutes to get fully soft. Also I misread and added the water into the nut mix first—still tasted great though.

    1. User avatar suspiciousCommentator says:

      4 stars
I read “pour water into the dish” and still kinda dumped it into the apple holes by mistake 😅 but honestly it was still pretty tasty. 40-45 min felt short for me too, so maybe I’ll just plan for closer to an hour next time.

    2. User avatar sebrina.senger says:

      5 stars
Good to know! I’m usually nervous about bake times with apples—55 minutes makes me feel better since my oven runs hot/cold depending on the day. Glad it still tasted great!

  28. User avatar ivory.mraz21 says:

    3 stars
Should I use green apples? Got confused when reading the title. My cousin told me to try red ones.

  29. 2 stars
Boring. What’s all the hype about? Just apples filled with stuff.

  30. 1 star
How do you even bake apples? Like, what??? This sounds weird. 1 star for confusing me.

  31. 4 stars
My water evaporated too fast and the dish got a little dry. I added a splash of water halfway through and it saved it. Still tasty!

  32. 2 stars
I love apples, but 1/4 tsp salt feels way too salty? Maybe my nuts were already salted (oops). Still ate it all, but wouldn’t call it “best ever.”

  33. User avatar chi.braun1988 says:

    4 stars
Not bad! The flavor combo is great, but I think mine needed a bit longer because the apples weren’t as soft as I wanted. Still, the nut-honey topping was delicious.

    1. User avatar pablo.stokes23 says:

      4 stars
Glad you liked it! I thought the water would make the apples softer quicker—guess it depends on the apple type. Also lol I used way less cinnamon once and it still tasted fine, so don’t stress too much.

    2. User avatar andre.buckridge5 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—mine always needs a little extra time too. If the apples aren’t getting soft by 40-45 minutes, I just add 10 more and cover loosely with foil so the tops don’t brown too fast.

  34. 3 stars
I think you can go lighter on the honey—2 tbsp was a little sweet for me. Also wish the directions included whether to cover them.

  35. User avatar stanford.carter50 says:

    4 stars
I used the wrong nuts and added chocolate chips. Still yummy!

  36. User avatar gillian.tremblay57 says:

    4 stars
A simple recipe to follow, but I used honey and maple syrup mixed instead. Great combination!

  37. User avatar edison.ratke says:

    5 stars
These turned out so cozy and fragrant—cinnamon + nutmeg in baked apples is always a win. I used Honeycrisp and they were perfectly tender after ~42 minutes.

  38. User avatar lorilee.lakin says:

    5 stars
Quick and easy! I put some ice cream on top too. Makes it a dessert!

  39. 5 stars
    Delicious 😋

  40. User avatar Emily Saunders says:

    4 stars
I only had almonds and used those instead. Still turned out pretty good! 😄

  41. User avatar earle.zieme says:

    2 stars
Not sure about this one. I think the apples were undercooked. Maybe I did it wrong?

    1. User avatar Trin Tragula says:

      3 stars
I had the same issue with the apples. They just didn’t get soft enough for me. Maybe try baking them longer next time?

  42. 5 stars
These baked apples are seriously cozy. The cinnamon-nut filling tastes like fall in a bowl (or… apple, lol). I used Honeycrisp and they held up perfectly.

  43. User avatar major.hahn25 says:

    5 stars
I never trust recipes with honey, but my friend insisted I try this. Wow, I’m shocked! It was great!

  44. 4 stars
Pretty good! I’m not usually a fan of nuts in desserts, but the pecans worked. Next time I might add a tiny splash of vanilla because the honey flavor was strong (in a good way).

    1. User avatar young.king says:

      5 stars
Glad the pecans worked for you! A tiny splash of vanilla sounds like a great upgrade—should round out the honey without taking over. I’ll try that next time too.

  45. User avatar Leto II Atreides says:

    5 stars
Simple and quick recipe! I’ve never baked apples before but this was easy!

  46. 4 stars
I never thought of baking apples like this. I used pecans and they added a great crunch! So good.

  47. User avatar ArabianNights says:

    3 stars
Sounds easy, but I don’t like nuts. Can I use chocolate chips instead?

  48. User avatar augustus.hahn says:

    1 star
Apples?? Nuts?? Who even eats this?? Give me chocolate any day! 🍫

  49. User avatar deetta.metz36 says:

    2 stars
Hmmm, not sure if this is a real recipe. Baked apples? Sounds weird, but I’ll give it a try.

    1. 3 stars
Baked apples? Really? Sounds kinda weird… but okay, maybe it could be good. Who knows?

    2. User avatar trang.kautzer2000 says:

      5 stars
I think baked apples sound delicious! I love the idea of nuts and honey. Can’t wait to try it!

  50. User avatar taryn.wisozk90 says:

    3 stars
My grandma used to make these but with raisins, not nuts. I prefer that version!

    1. 5 stars
I get that! Raisins definitely give a sweet chewyness that nuts just can’t match. I’d love to try your grandma’s version someday!

    2. User avatar Leto II Atreides says:

      2 stars
I don’t know why anyone would prefer raisins over nuts! Nuts give a nice crunch. 🤷‍♂️

  51. 2 stars
Okay, but like also, why not just eat the apples raw? Seems like more work for no reason…

    1. User avatar Philip Cormier says:

      5 stars
Baked apples are way better! You get that warm, gooey goodness with all the flavors mixed in. Plus, it’s a nice dessert idea! 😋

    2. User avatar rickie.murazik8 says:

      4 stars
Idk, raw apples just don’t hit the same. Cooking them brings out flavors and makes them special, you know? But each to their own, I guess.

  52. User avatar edwardo.dickens40 says:

    4 stars
Delicious, but my nut mixture got a little thick and didn’t spread nicely into the wells. Maybe I needed more water or slightly less butter. Still tasted amazing though!

  53. User avatar oPandariaNo says:

    5 stars
This was a hit at our family dinner! Everyone loved the sweetness of the honey with the crunchy nuts. Will definitely make it again!

  54. User avatar Danielle Kuvalis says:

    3 stars
“Granny Smith or Honeycrisp” is right, but i feel like any apple works. I used Gala and it was fine. Would’ve liked more nut filling though.

  55. 3 stars
The nut mixture burned a little, but I just scraped it off and ate the apples. Not bad overall. 3 stars.

    1. User avatar elouise.mccullough says:

      4 stars
I think the key is to watch the nuts while they’re baking! They can go from perfect to burnt real quick. Glad you enjoyed the apples though!

    2. User avatar bethanie.dickens says:

      2 stars
Burnt nuts? Eww, sounds gross! Next time, maybe don’t bake them as long? But hey, if you liked the apples, that’s all that matters!

  56. User avatar wellRespected says:

    2 stars
Baked apples? More like mushy fruit! I prefer my apples crunchy. 😒

  57. 4 stars
I was skeptical at first, but the flavor combinations are definitely good. Maybe a little too sweet for my taste tho.

  58. 3 stars
Not bad. The nut topping is good, but I wish the apples were a touch sweeter. I’ll increase honey next time or add a little brown sugar.

  59. User avatar delpha.kohler says:

    2 stars
I tried this recipe and the apples turned out mushy. Not a fan.

  60. User avatar joye.huels68 says:

    4 stars
My kids ate them all! Thanks for the recipe. Simple and tasty.

  61. User avatar isaiah.moore45 says:

    5 stars
Love this recipe! So easy and perfect for Thanksgiving. Thanks!

  62. User avatar edmund.crooks51 says:

    1 star
Boring. They were just baked apples. Nothing special.

  63. 5 stars
These apples were a hit! Everyone loved them. Will make again!

  64. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

    2 stars
    meh

    1. User avatar maurice.sipes65 says:

      3 stars
Meh is fair 😅 They’re good, but they’re pretty simple—mostly apples + honey-nuts. I’d add a little vanilla next time though.

  65. User avatar James DuBuque says:

    3 stars
I’m skeptical about the water amount—mine kinda pooled a lot and the bottom got a little soggy. Still tasty though, just next time I’ll use less water and check earlier.

  66. User avatar brande.schneider1966 says:

    5 stars
These were delicious! Perfect for fall. My family loved them!

  67. User avatar keenan.reilly says:

    5 stars
OMG this is so easy. I did it on a weeknight and it felt fancy. The golden nut topping is the best part—crispy edges!

  68. User avatar anonymous_hacker says:

    2 stars
375°F seems high? I baked at 350°C (because I misread it) and they came out soft and kind of mushy. Flavor was still nice—just different texture.

  69. User avatar Lintilla says:

    3 stars
I followed the recipe but my apples came out too mushy. I think 30 minutes would have been enough for my oven. 😩

  70. User avatar fay.hansen27 says:

    4 stars
Pretty solid recipe! My apples took closer to 50 minutes, but once they softened everything came together. I wish I’d chopped the nuts a bit smaller so the filling looked more even.

  71. User avatar aurelio.leuschke30 says:

    2 stars
1/4 tsp nutmeg is way too much, sorry. I got a strong “spice” taste and my family didn’t like it. Maybe reduce it next time.

  72. User avatar brady.klein says:

    2 stars
I don’t know, they turned out mushy and not sweet enough. Disappointed!

  73. User avatar Majikthise says:

    2 stars
Baked apples are supposed to be for dessert! These aren’t sweet enough with just honey. 😒

    1. User avatar Dania Ankunding says:

      4 stars
I think they’re great, but maybe try adding brown sugar or more honey next time? Just a thought! 😊

    2. User avatar liberal.hero says:

      3 stars
Dessert is dessert! U don’t need it super sweet. But I get it… sweetness is the best part sometimes.

  74. User avatar Ra'zhinda says:

    5 stars
These turned out so cozy and fragrant—cinnamon + nutmeg really makes the kitchen smell like fall. I used Honeycrisp and they were perfect after 42 minutes.

  75. User avatar Stockwell says:

    1 star
Why do you put salt in sweet recipes? Ruins it! Don’t make it.

  76. User avatar lajuana.bergstrom92 says:

    5 stars
These were ridiculously good—warm, cozy, and the nut-honey filling turned perfectly golden. I used Honeycrisp apples and they held up nicely. Will make again for sure!

  77. 3 stars
What if you don’t have nutmeg? Can you just leave it out or substitue it with something? Asking for a friend.

  78. User avatar Dr. Amado Rath says:

    4 stars
Wow this sounds delicious! I can’t wait to try it. Do you think it would work with pears?

    1. 5 stars
I think pears would work great! They’re juicy and sweet, just like apples. Give it a go!

  79. User avatar fleta.altenwerth says:

    2 stars
Disappointed! The apples turned mushy and the flavors were bland. I’ll stick to my original pie recipe.

    1. User avatar jeanine.shields says:

      4 stars
I’m sorry it didn’t turn out for you! Maybe next time try using firmer apples or less water? Just a thought!

    2. 2 stars
Gotta disagree! My baked apples came out perfect! Maybe you overcooked them? Just saying.

  80. User avatar kayleen.tromp2016 says:

    4 stars
I made this but my apples were still kinda firm after 45 minutes. Maybe I used smaller apples—still tasted great though.

  81. User avatar Miss Cornell Larson says:

    5 stars
Baked apples? My grandma used to make these when I was little. Brings back memories. ❤️

  82. 1 star
Baked apples? Isn’t that just a mushy fruit mess? Why not just eat ’em raw?

    1. 4 stars
I get what you mean, but baked apples are actually really good! They get all sweet and warm, kinda like a dessert. Give it a shot! 🍏

  83. 3 stars
I’m skeptical about the 1/4 cup water—mine almost evaporated before the apples were tender. I ended up baking 10 minutes longer, but the flavor was still great.

    1. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

      5 stars
Good catch—some apples are just drier than others. If your apples were taking longer, I’d definitely add a splash more water (or cover loosely with foil) so they steam instead of drying out.

  84. 5 stars
This recipe is soooo good! I made it for my family and they loved it! 5 stars!

  85. User avatar rueben.carroll5 says:

    5 stars
OMG this is so good! I used honey and added raisins, YUM!

  86. User avatar bryce.towne says:

    3 stars
I followed the recipe pretty much, but my nut filling didn’t get very golden. Maybe my nuts were chopped too fine? Still tasty though!

  87. User avatar kamala.mayer85 says:

    4 stars
“Cut off the tops” is a weird instruction lol—mine looked like little hats but it worked. The honey-butter sauce tasted amazing.

    1. 5 stars
Haha yep, “little hats” is the perfect description 😄 I’ve done that same way—looks funny but bakes up great. Glad the honey-butter sauce came out awesome!

  88. User avatar curt.torp43 says:

    5 stars
OMG this was soooo yum! I added a bit of vanilla ice cream on top. Can I say heaven on earth?!

  89. User avatar victor.morissette35 says:

    5 stars
These turned out *so* cozy—sweet, nutty, and the cinnamon + nutmeg combo is perfect. I used Honeycrisp and they stayed tender after 45 minutes.

  90. 5 stars
    So good 😋

  91. 5 stars
These are super delish! My kids loved them, and they disappeared so fast.

  92. User avatar eugenie.funk62 says:

    3 stars
Not sure about the nut mixture. Mine came out a little dry and grainy, like the nuts didn’t fully meld with the honey/butter. Next time I’ll add a splash more water.

  93. User avatar terminatorXYZ says:

    2 stars
Not convinced the ratio makes sense. 2 tbsp honey for 4 apples feels low, and 1/4 cup water seems random—won’t that make them soggy instead of caramel-y?

    1. User avatar erin.weimann80 says:

      4 stars
I get your concern, but I think the water is mainly there to prevent sticking and help the apples steam a bit. The honey + butter should still caramelize as it heats.

    2. User avatar wanita.grimes says:

      2 stars
2 tbsp for 4 apples sounds light to me too. Mine turned out more “baked apple” than caramel. Next time I’d bump honey closer to 1/4 cup.

  94. User avatar Gaius Helen Mohiam says:

    4 stars
Good flavor, but I think 1/4 cup water felt like not enough in my dish. Next time I’ll add a little more so the apples don’t dry out.

  95. 4 stars
I don’t trust recipes with nutmeg in them, but I tried anyway. Surprisingly tasty. Probably will make again, even if it’s weird.

  96. User avatar alexis.larson says:

    4 stars
Easy peasy! I made it in 30 mins! Delicious!

  97. 2 stars
Why use water? I skipped that part and they turned out mushy. Not sure if I would try again.

  98. 5 stars
    One word: yummy.

  99. User avatar rosario.mclaughlin84 says:

    4 stars
Pretty good! I added a splash of lemon juice to the apple cores and it brightened everything. Next time I’ll chop the nuts a bit finer so the filling stays more even.

    1. User avatar jay.sipes2021 says:

      3 stars
Interesting… lemon juice with honey and nuts is kind of a lot though 😅 I think the cinnamon/nutmeg already do the heavy lifting. Did you notice it gets more tangy than sweet?

    2. User avatar basementDweller says:

      5 stars
That lemon idea sounds awesome—apple cores can use that little pop. I’ll try it next time. Also chopping the nuts finer makes total sense for an even filling!

  100. User avatar bob.reynolds54 says:

    5 stars
These were a hit at our family dinner! So sweet and delicious.
