Bacon, Egg and Cheddar Scones

April 24, 2026

Bacon, egg, and cheddar scones are a savory twist on the traditional baked scone, turning a classic tea-time treat into a hearty and satisfying option for breakfast or brunch. They combine smoky, rich, and cheesy flavors in a soft, tender pastry that feels both comforting and filling, making them a favorite for those who enjoy savory baked goods.

At the base of these scones is a simple dough made from flour, butter, and a leavening agent such as baking powder. The butter is cut into the flour to create a light, crumbly texture that bakes into a soft interior with a slightly crisp exterior. Unlike sweet lemon scones, this version is designed to highlight savory ingredients rather than sugar or fruit.

Bacon is one of the key flavor components, adding a smoky, salty depth that enhances every bite. When cooked and folded into the dough, it distributes evenly, ensuring bursts of flavor throughout the scone. Cheddar cheese adds richness and sharpness, melting slightly during baking to create pockets of creamy, savory goodness.

Egg contributes both structure and softness, helping bind the ingredients while adding a mild, comforting flavor. Together, bacon, egg, and cheddar create a balanced combination that feels hearty without being heavy, making these scones suitable for both standalone enjoyment and meal pairing.

Once baked, the scones develop a golden crust with a soft, fluffy interior. They are best enjoyed warm, but they also hold their texture well, making them convenient for preparing ahead of time. A light brush of butter or a sprinkle of extra cheese can enhance their flavor even further.

These scones are versatile and can be served on their own or alongside soups, salads, or spreads. They also fit seamlessly into brunch spreads with fruit, coffee, or other baked items, offering a savory contrast to sweeter dishes.

With their rich ingredients, soft texture, and satisfying flavor, bacon, egg, and cheddar scones provide a delicious alternative to traditional baked goods and a comforting way to start the day.

I tried these but my dough turned out really crumbly and dry. What did I do wrong? 2/5.

Yum! Crusty on the outside and soft inside, just like my grandma used to make. 😋

Sounds delicious! I can’t wait to try making them this weekend! 🥓🧀

  3. 5 stars
Super easy recipe! I made them in no time and they vanished at the party. Definitely making again! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Yum, these sound delicious! I can’t wait to try making them myself, but I think I’ll add some jalapeños for a kick. 🌶️

    2. User avatar emery.quitzon says:

Really? They vanished? I tried making scones before and they were like bricks. 🙄 Did you really follow the recipe?

  4. User avatar lavon.conn says:

    3 stars
Just okay… I was expecting more flavor. The bacon didn’t shine through like I hoped. 3/5.

Can I use turkey bacon instead? I don’t eat pork. 3 stars because I haven’t tried yet.

Scones? I thought they were biscuits. Aren’t they the same thing? 🤔 Anyway, mine turned out great!!

  7. User avatar rich.landlord says:

Way too much bacon for me (lol). I know, it’s bacon scones, but I’d cut it down to like 4 slices. Otherwise the recipe is easy.

    1. 5 stars
Lol yeah 8 slices is a lot—4 slices sounds way more my speed too. I like the “easy” part though, might try it next time with less bacon.

  8. User avatar gilberte.bahringer54 says:

These scones are to die for! The bacon and cheddar combo is heavenly. 5 stars!

  9. User avatar celia.daniel says:

I was skeptical about scones with bacon (sounds kinda fancy), but wow. They’re savory, tender, and not dry at all. Next time I’ll add a tiny pinch of black pepper.

    1. User avatar freeman.veum14 says:

      5 stars
Honestly I didn’t think bacon + scones would work either, but now I want to try. Savory scones are the best—your note about them not being dry is a huge win.

  10. User avatar tracy.grimes95 says:

    4 stars
Pretty tasty, but I found the dough a little dry even with the 1/2 cup milk. Next time I’ll add a splash more milk and maybe keep the butter extra cold. Still, the flavor is solid.

  11. 4 stars
The instructions are clear, but 1 inch thick seems thick? I accidentally made mine thinner and they browned faster (like 18 minutes). Taste was amazing, though.

  12. 1 star
I didn’t really like the texture, felt like chewing on a rubber ball. Sorry, not for me.

  13. 2 stars
Not a fan. Scones always come out weirdly dense for me, and these were no different. The taste was okay though—bacon carried it.

  14. User avatar jc.rippin1973 says:

    5 stars
These scones are so delicious! I’ve made them twice this week already. The bacon adds such a nice flavor!

  15. User avatar Eorlund says:

    4 stars
Pretty solid recipe! I did notice the dough felt a bit sticky when I kneaded, so I dusted more flour like it says. Flavor was great, but I think my oven runs hot because mine browned at like 18 minutes. Still delicious though.

  16. 3 stars
I tried these and they turned out okay, but they were kinda heavy. Maybe I over-kneaded (oops). Also 1 inch thick felt thick—mine needed a few extra minutes. Flavor is nice, just not as fluffy as I hoped.

  17. User avatar ArabianNights says:

    2 stars
I don’t know what I did wrong, but mine flattened out and were kind of gooey. Followed the recipe exactly, too.

    1. User avatar Hotblack Desiato says:

      5 stars
Maybe you overmixed the dough? That can make them flat and gooey. Don’t be too hard on yourself! Practice makes perfect.

    2. User avatar johanna.kessler23 says:

      4 stars
I had the same issue the first time! Make sure your baking powder is fresh, that can really throw off the texture.

  18. User avatar Michael83 says:

    5 stars
Made these today—so good. The bacon + cheddar combo is perfect, and they came out golden and flaky. I baked mine at 400°F for closer to 23 minutes and that was spot on.

    1. User avatar Refugio Keeling says:

      4 stars
Hmm I’m not sure about the “spot on” timing… my oven runs hot and they’d burn in 23 minutes 😅 But the idea sounds great. Do you let them cool like 5 mins or longer?

    2. User avatar ned.gleichner26 says:

      5 stars
Yes!! Bacon + cheddar really is the winning combo—glad yours turned out golden and flaky. 🙌 I’ve never tried 23 minutes exactly, but I’m keeping that in mind for next time.

  19. User avatar Carl Effertz I says:

    4 stars
Pretty good for a quick savory scone. My dough was a bit dry at first, but adding a tiny splash more milk fixed it. The bake time was spot on—golden and not too greasy.

  20. User avatar Quickbeam says:

    3 stars
Easy recipe but a little too salty for my taste. Maybe I’ll cut down on the bacon next time?

  21. User avatar evangelina.hahn2014 says:

    4 stars
Bacon and cheese together? That’s a win! These were easy to make. A bit messy though.

  22. User avatar dell.abernathy1995 says:

    4 stars
Pretty solid recipe. My dough was a little sticky, so I used extra flour while patting it into shape. Still tasted great though, especially warm.

  23. User avatar alva.metz says:

    5 stars
So good!! Kids loved them, can’t wait to make again. Scones for breakfast every day! 😍

    1. 2 stars
Are scones really that good? I think I’d rather have pancakes. 😕

    2. 5 stars
I’m glad your kids loved them! Scones for breakfast sounds like a fun tradition! 🥞

  24. User avatar rosalee.nienow6 says:

    5 stars
My kids loved these. I added a tiny pinch of black pepper and it was a game changer. Definitely making again for brunch.

  25. User avatar mason.kessler90 says:

    4 stars
Pretty solid. I used extra sharp cheddar and it tasted even better. The only thing is mine spread slightly—maybe my butter wasn’t cold enough.

    1. User avatar rosalyn.lind says:

      5 stars
Nice! Extra sharp cheddar always levels these up. Sounds like your dough just needed a bit more butter firmness—next time chill the butter (or even the dough) before baking.

    2. User avatar emerita.abernathy says:

      4 stars
Mine spread too the first time I tried scones—turns out I used “room temp” butter 😅. I’m gonna try keeping it super cold like you said.

  26. User avatar Frost Atronach says:

    5 stars
These scones are to die for! Perfect for brunch. Can’t believe I made them myself! 🥓🧀

    1. User avatar branda.monahan44 says:

      3 stars
They look great, but aren’t scones supposed to be sweet? I dunno about bacon in them…

    2. User avatar marsha.white56 says:

      5 stars
I totally agree! These scones rocked my brunch too! Can’t believe how easy they were!

  27. User avatar arnold.konopelski44 says:

    4 stars
Sooo good! I just used regular cheese instead of cheddar and they still came out great. I and my kids love ’em!

    1. User avatar audie.oberbrunner says:

      5 stars
That’s awesome! Glad they turned out well! 😊 Gonna try with regular cheese next time.

  28. 2 stars
I followed the recipe to a T and it didn’t work. My scones were flat as pancakes. What went wrong?

  29. User avatar Skeleton says:

    4 stars
Pretty good, but mine spread a bit and weren’t as tall as I expected. I think I kneaded too much. Still tasty and the flavor is great.

  30. User avatar tyesha.parisian1960 says:

    3 stars
Bacon + cheddar scones sounds amazing, but the “knead gently” part confused me. I overworked it and they got tough. Lesson learned: don’t manhandle the dough.

    1. User avatar dulce.carroll13 says:

      5 stars
Totally get that—“knead gently” is doing a lot of work there 😅 With scones you want just enough handling to bring it together, not develop dough like bread. Overworking makes them tough for sure. Next time try patting/folding instead of kneading!
