Vanilla Cake Pops

January 23, 2024

Vanilla cake pops are the perfect bite-sized treat, soft, sweet, and endlessly customizable. Whether you’re celebrating a birthday, throwing a baby shower, or just want something fun to make with kids, cake pops are a guaranteed hit.

At their core, cake pops are a clever way to repurpose cake into a portable dessert. You start by baking a simple vanilla cake, homemade or from a box, both work fine. Once cooled, crumble the cake into fine crumbs and mix it with a bit of vanilla frosting. The goal is a dough-like texture that holds together when pressed but isn’t overly wet.

Next, shape the mixture into small balls. A cookie scoop works great for even sizing. Chill them in the fridge or freezer for a bit so they firm up and hold their shape when dipped.

The candy coating is what makes cake pops visually irresistible. Melted candy melts or almond bark are ideal, and you can add a touch of vegetable oil to thin the mixture if needed. Dip the tip of each stick into the coating before inserting it into the cake ball, this helps anchor the stick. Then dip the entire pop into the coating, gently tap off the excess, and decorate while the coating is still wet.

Sprinkles, colored sugar, crushed cookies, or a drizzle of contrasting chocolate all work beautifully. Once decorated, stand them up in a foam block or cake pop stand to dry completely.

Cake pops are not only cute but also easy to make ahead. Store them in the fridge for several days or freeze them for longer. They’re perfect for wrapping up as party favors or arranging in a bouquet-like display for a dessert table.

These vanilla cake pops are a blank canvas for creativity. Add a few drops of food coloring to the coating to match your party theme or use festive decorations to match the season. However you serve them, they’re sure to bring smiles with every bite

Delicious but I used chocolate cake mix instead. I think it worked better! Just saying. 😜

Chocolate cake mix, huh? That’s interesting! I never thought of that. Might give it a try next time! 🍫

Not sure if chocolate would be better, but if it works for you, then that’s cool! Can’t be too chocolatey, right? 🤷‍♂️

I tried making these but ended up with a mess. The glaze didn’t set right and they just fell apart. Not sure what I did wrong.

Yummy! Kids loved the sprinkles. Would make again.

I expected cake pops like the classic kind with sticks, not just balls dipped in glaze. Still good though—just different from what I thought.

  5. 3 stars
Okay but the instructions say 1/4 cup milk for glaze… and then the cake mix instructions say like 1 cup milk, so I got confused and used the wrong amount at first. Still tasted good though 😅

      5 stars
Ohhh yeah that’s super common—cake mix directions usually use their own milk amount, and then the glaze has its own smaller amount. If it tasted good anyway, you probably nailed the texture for the glaze 😄

Simple recipe but I didn’t love the texture. They were kinda dry, I think I’ll stick to cupcakes 🤷‍♀️

    1. User avatar Perla Runte says:

I hear ya! The texture can be tricky. Did you let them cool completely? That helps a lot! 🥴

  7. 2 stars
I don’t know about these. The mix needs more flavor. Maybe try adding chocolate next time?

  8. 5 stars

  10. 4 stars
Super easy to make! But I forgot to add the eggs 😓. They still tasted fine tho!

  11. User avatar kent.fisher says:

These turned out adorable! The glaze was sweet but not too much, and the texture was super soft. I chilled a bit longer than 30 minutes and they stayed perfectly round.

  12. User avatar Alfonzo Fadel says:

Idk about this. Can’t believe people actually eat these. 😂

They look good, but I don’t know if they are really that amazing. Maybe it’s just the sprinkles that make them look nice?

  14. 1 star
WAY TOO SWEET!!! My kids loved them but I couldn’t even finish one.

  15. User avatar wiley.pouros14 says:

The recipe is straightforward, but I wish it mentioned whether to use a stick lol. I still made them as bite-size balls and served them like truffles—worked fine.

    1. User avatar Milissa Harvey says:

      3 stars
Wait so no sticks? 😅 I’m confused but glad it worked. I followed it and mine kinda fell apart before the fridge… maybe my cake wasn’t cooled enough or my crumb was too chunky.

    2. User avatar caren.kertzmann12 says:

      4 stars
I also wondered about the stick part—this reads like more “cake truffles” than true pops. Still, the chilling + glazing sounds legit. Did you use toothpicks or just serve them as balls?

  16. User avatar karl.bauch says:

Delicious! I made these for a party and they were a hit! Will definitely make again.

Cake pop recipe? 🥳 What’s cake pops? Just cake on a stick?

  18. 2 stars
1/2 cup butter and 2 eggs seems like a lot for cake pops. Mine were kinda rich and not as light as I expected. Will try with less butter next time.

OMG these are the best! I added chocolate sprinkles. Love it!

My cake pops fell apart when I dipped them. Frustrating!

  22. 3 stars
too sweet for me, I guess. Maybe less powdered sugar next time? Can’t be perfect for everyone I suppose.

    1. User avatar Daedric Prince says:

      4 stars
I think it’s good to adjust the sweetness to your liking! You can totally use less sugar next time, or even try a different glaze. Gotta make it suit your taste!

  23. 3 stars
I had trouble with the glaze. It was too runny. Any tips?

    1. User avatar Shaddam Corrino IV says:

      5 stars
I had the same issue! Try adding a little more powdered sugar to thicken it up. It works like a charm!

    2. User avatar candi.bailey10 says:

Glaze runny? Just use less milk next time! Or maybe let it cool a bit before dipping? Idk…

Cake pops? Sounds a bit too sweet for me. How can you mix butter, eggs, and cake mix? Seems tricky.

What are you supposed to do with the extra 1/4 cup milk? Lost me there.

    1. User avatar mayme.stanton80 says:

      5 stars
The extra 1/4 cup milk is for the glaze! Just mix it with the powdered sugar and vanilla in step 7.

  29. User avatar oren.quitzon50 says:

    5 stars
Yummy yummy! Just like the bakery ones but better! Will make again! 🌈
