Traditional Christmas Cheese Ball

December 20, 2024

The traditional Christmas cheese ball is a classic holiday appetizer that never fails to impress. With its creamy, savory filling and festive appearance, it’s a great addition to any holiday spread. This crowd-pleasing treat combines rich cream cheese with a variety of flavorful ingredients, resulting in a smooth, tangy base that’s perfect for spreading on crackers, bread, or vegetables.

The beauty of a Christmas cheese ball lies in its versatility. The base of the cheese ball typically starts with cream cheese, softened to ensure it mixes well. Shredded cheddar cheese adds sharpness, while other cheeses like Monterey Jack, Swiss, or even blue cheese can be incorporated for added complexity and depth. To enhance the flavor, ingredients such as finely chopped onions, garlic, and Worcestershire sauce are often mixed in, giving the cheese ball a savory kick.

To make the cheese ball even more festive, it’s often rolled in chopped nuts, such as pecans, walnuts, or almonds, which provide a crunchy contrast to the smooth and creamy filling. Chopped fresh herbs like parsley, chives, or dill can also be added for extra color and flavor. Some variations of the recipe include a hint of sweetness with ingredients like dried cranberries, chopped dates, or a drizzle of honey, making the cheese ball a beautiful balance of sweet and savory.

Once assembled, the cheese ball is refrigerated for a few hours or overnight, allowing the flavors to meld and the texture to firm up. This step is essential for ensuring that the cheese ball holds its shape and is easy to slice or scoop. It’s then ready to be served, often alongside an array of crackers, vegetable sticks, or even sliced baguette.

The traditional Christmas cheese ball is not only delicious but also adds a festive touch to any gathering. It’s easy to make ahead of time, freeing up your schedule on the big day. Whether you’re hosting a holiday party or bringing a dish to share, this cheese ball will surely be a hit at your table.

Uh, I didn’t have Worcestershire sauce, used soy sauce instead. It was alright.

Why do they call it a cheese ball? It’s more like a cheese blob. 😂

So easy to make! I added some jalapeños for a kick. Gonna be my go-to recipe!

    1. 5 stars
Sounds awesome! I love spicy food. Jalapeños are a great idea!

  11. User avatar Ka'o Makagh says:

Made this for my family and they devoured it. So simple and yummy.

  12. 3 stars
It was okay. The pecans didn’t really go with the cheese for my taste. Maybe walnuts next time?

  13. User avatar monty.bergstrom1 says:

    4 stars
I didn’t have pecans, so I used walnuts and it turned out great!

  14. User avatar darin.torphy25 says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but mine came out a bit too salty for my taste. Worcestershire can be strong. Might cut it down a little next time or use less cheddar maybe.

  15. User avatar miguel.koss says:

    3 stars
Cheese balls? I thought those were for dogs! 😂 But this recipe looks good.

  16. 4 stars
This is good, but the garlic/onion powder feel a bit strong together. I might cut them in half next time so the cheddar flavor shines more.

  17. User avatar shon.cremin2018 says:

    5 stars
Cheddar cheese is my fav!! Yum!

  18. User avatar betty.hansen1976 says:

Kinda bland compared to other recipes I’ve tried. Disappointed.

  19. User avatar Ms. Adah Koelpin says:

    5 stars
I can’t believe how easy this is! Why didn’t I think of making a cheese ball before?

    1. User avatar Sandy Padberg says:

      5 stars
I know, right? It’s so simple yet so impressive! Perfect for parties!

  20. 4 stars
Looks fancy for almost no effort. Also—pro tip: form the ball quickly before it warms up. Mine got soft on the counter for like 10 minutes.

  21. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

    5 stars
That Worcestershire sauce is key! Made it, got compliments. Will make again!

  22. 3 stars
Mine didn’t really hold together like I expected. I think my cream cheese wasn’t soft enough. After I let it sit longer, it worked better, but the first try was a crumbly mess.

  23. User avatar jake.paucek1988 says:

    4 stars
Yum! I added some dill and it was amazinggg. Definitely making again!

    1. User avatar clarinda.marvin says:

      2 stars
Really? Dill? I don’t think that would taste good with cheese. Sounds kinda weird to me.

    2. User avatar kent.deckow15 says:

      5 stars
Dill sounds like a great addition! I might try that next time. Thanks for the tip!

  24. User avatar tissues_with_issues says:

    5 stars
Wow! This is so simple yet so fancy! I added some dried cranberries too. 💖

    1. User avatar rich.landlord says:

      5 stars
I love that you added cranberries! It’s the perfect touch for the holidays. 🎄

  25. User avatar ossie.hermiston1953 says:

    4 stars
Easy to make but I did not have any Worcestershire sauce. I used soy sauce instead. Still turned out great!

  26. User avatar cockroach says:

    5 stars
This cheese ball was a hit at the party! Everyone loved it! 😋

  27. 3 stars
Mine fell apart when I tried to roll it in pecans. I probably didn’t soften the cream cheese enough or I rushed the chilling. Once I refrigerated properly, it got easier.

    1. User avatar mi.dickens11 says:

      5 stars
Ugh mine too! The pecans basically slid right off. I think I underestimated how soft the cream cheese needed to be—like, not melted, but truly spreadable. After I chilled longer (overnight), it held its shape way better.

    2. 3 stars
I’m not convinced it’s the chilling lol. Mine “fell apart” even though I let it sit. Maybe my cheddar was too dry/shredded fine? I just ended up pressing it into a container instead of rolling—still tasty though.

  28. 2 stars
I don’t know how is it traditional? Cheese ball is cheese ball, not much diff in flavor. Meh.

  29. 3 stars
Easy recipe, but I thought it was too salty. Maybe less Worcestershire next time?

  30. User avatar zoe.rosenbaum2000 says:

    4 stars
I didn’t have pecans, so I used chopped walnuts. It still tasted great, just a little different. Super easy holiday appetizer.

    1. User avatar Spider Guardian says:

      5 stars
Totally! Walnuts make sense—glad it still tasted great. The coating really changes the vibe, but cheese balls are forgiving 😄

  31. User avatar tona.torp26 says:

    3 stars
Can I substitute the pecans with peanuts? I got allergies. 😐

  32. 4 stars
Cheap and easy appetizer. Pecans are the best part. I used dried parsley because I forgot fresh and it worked fine.

    1. 5 stars
Totally agree—pecans make it! 😄 Good catch on the dried parsley too; I bet that still brings enough herb flavor. I’m trying this with what I’ve got next time.

  33. User avatar edythe.dooley2024 says:

    5 stars
I made this for a party and people kept coming back for more. The texture firmed up nicely and the cheddar flavor really came through. Easy recipe, no drama.

  34. User avatar Douglas S. Halfempty says:

    1 star
    I can’t make this. I’m allergic to nuts 😭

  35. User avatar susann.gerhold95 says:

    5 stars
Perfect for holiday gatherings. Simple and classy. Everyone should try!!

  36. User avatar bertie.kreiger says:

    5 stars
SO YUM! I sat down and ate half of it before my guests arrived. 😂

    1. 5 stars
Haha, that’s the spirit! Sometimes the best part is enjoying it before the company arrives. 😂

    2. User avatar joe_banana says:

      2 stars
I dunno, cheese balls seem a bit weird to me. I mean, who eats cheese like that? 🤔

  37. 2 stars
I followed the recipe but my cheese ball turned out too soft. What did I do wrong? 🤔

  38. User avatar yer.leffler says:

    3 stars
This is basically a cheese spread, right? Also what’s parsley for?

  39. 4 stars
I skipped the parsley and added some chili flakes instead. Wow! Spicy!

    1. User avatar Troy Emard says:

      5 stars
That sounds like a great twist! I love some heat in my recipes!

  40. User avatar Lumberjack says:

    2 stars
I don’t know, it looks a bit weird to me. Cheese in a ball? Seems off.

    1. User avatar Dan Streetmentioner says:

      4 stars
I can see where you’re coming from, but cheese balls are actually a classic! They taste way better than they look. You should try it! 🙂

  41. User avatar particia.zieme says:

    3 stars
Not sure about the onion/garlic powder amount. It tasted a little muted to me—maybe my cheddar wasn’t as flavorful. I added a pinch more garlic powder and it improved a lot.

  42. User avatar darline.bergstrom says:

    4 stars
Delicious! But I added some jalapeños for a kick. Super tasty!

  43. User avatar xenia.breitenberg45 says:

    3 stars
Good, but Pecans in it? I ain’t a fan. Can I use almonds instead?

  44. User avatar ralph.ward says:

    🤤 Yummm!

    1. User avatar mathew.powlowski says:

This looks amazing! Can’t wait to try it for our family gathering. 🧀

  45. 5 stars
This cheese ball was a hit at our Christmas party! Everyone loved it!

  46. 4 stars
Delish! But I think I added too much garlic powder. Next time I’ll be more careful.

    1. User avatar wade.pollich57 says:

      5 stars
Garlic powder can be strong! Just a pinch next time should do it. Glad you liked it otherwise! 😊

  47. User avatar Dremora Lord says:

    5 stars
Made this for my family last year—so good. The garlic/onion with the Worcestershire is such a nice punch, and the pecan coating makes it feel fancy.

  48. User avatar maybelle.maggio says:

    5 stars
This cheese ball is a hit at my holiday parties! Everyone loves it!

  49. User avatar Mistral says:

    5 stars
YUM! My kids devoured it! A perfect mix of crunch and creaminess. Will make it again!

This cheese ball is amazing! It was the hit of our Christmas party. Everyone loved it!

  51. User avatar delilah.labadie says:

I don’t get why people rave about cheese balls. This one was bland for me, maybe it’s just my taste.

    1. User avatar kiara.legros says:

      4 stars
I don’t know, but I love cheese balls! Maybe you should’ve added more seasoning or herbs? They can be really versatile! 😋

    2. User avatar goldie.buckridge58 says:

      5 stars
I totally disagree! This cheese ball is a classic. It has that rich, creamy flavor that just hits the spot during the holidays. Maybe you just didn’t let it chill long enough?

  52. User avatar clara.terry2001 says:

    3 stars
Isn’t this just junk food? Cheese and nuts? I don’t know, seems kinda unhealthy, lol.

    1. User avatar veronique.morar says:

      5 stars
Junk food or not, it sure looks delicious! Cheese is life, so I’m not worried about a lil’ bit of fat. Just don’t eat the whole thing at once, lol.

    2. 4 stars
I see where you’re coming from, but it’s all about balance! A little cheese once in a while can be okay, especially during the holidays. Plus, nuts are good for you! 😊

  53. User avatar w00d_ch0p says:

    5 stars
So good. I brought it to family dinner and everyone asked for the recipe. 10/10 would re-cheese ball.

    1. User avatar Gaius Helen Mohiam says:

      5 stars
Love this 😂 brought it to family dinner too—same thing happened. So good!

  54. 5 stars
    Love cheese ball!! 😍 🧀

      5 stars
Me too! Cheese balls are the best appetizer at parties! 🎉

  55. User avatar chong.ziemann55 says:

    3 stars
I thought it was too much cream cheese. Can I use less and still have it taste good?

  56. User avatar ShanksOnePiece says:

    3 stars
I tried it and it tasted kind of bland until I added extra Worcestershire. Not sure if my cheddar was weak or if I did something wrong. Either way, I’d tweak it.

    1. User avatar wayne.homenick says:

      5 stars
Totally get that—sharp cheddar + only 1 tbsp Worcestershire can be subtle. Glad you found the fix! Next time I’d also add a tiny pinch more garlic powder or a dash of hot sauce if you like a kick.

  57. User avatar diego.okuneva16 says:

    5 stars
This was such a hit at our family gathering! Everyone loved it. Thank you!

    1. User avatar don.kilback2007 says:

      5 stars
So glad to hear it was a hit! We always make this for Christmas and it disappears fast. 🎉

  58. User avatar joe_banana says:

    3 stars
Mine didn’t really “stick” with the pecans like I expected. I think I under-chilled it or my cream cheese wasn’t soft enough. Still flavorful though!

  59. User avatar kimberlee.fadel2005 says:

    1 star
I made this but used cottage cheese because I was out of cream cheese. It came out weird, thought I’d give it a go. 😬

    1. User avatar ginger.braun78 says:

      4 stars
Cottage cheese? That’s an interesting swap! It might not have the same texture, but at least you tried! I respect that. 👍

  60. User avatar alden.thompson82 says:

    4 stars
Wait… is the cheddar measured as 2 cups shredded or packed? I used a bit less because it looked like a lot, and my ball wasn’t as firm. Still good, just not perfect.
