Stuffed Grape Leaves with Rice and Pomegranate

August 9, 2023

Stuffed grape leaves, also known as dolmas, are a classic dish that has been enjoyed in Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisines for centuries. Stuffed Grape Leaves with Rice and Pomegranate take this traditional recipe to new heights, adding a burst of fruity sweetness and vibrant color from the pomegranate. This dish is not only delicious but also visually stunning, making it perfect for special occasions or as a unique appetizer to share with family and friends.

The beauty of stuffed grape leaves lies in their simplicity. The grape leaves themselves have a delicate, earthy flavor that pairs perfectly with a savory rice filling. In this version, the rice is seasoned with herbs like dill, mint, and parsley, giving it a fresh and fragrant aroma. The pomegranate seeds add a delightful sweetness and pop of color, balancing out the savory flavors of the rice and herbs while bringing an unexpected twist to the dish.

The rice filling is wrapped tightly in grape leaves and then cooked, allowing the flavors to meld together and infuse the leaves. Once cooked, the stuffed grape leaves become tender and flavorful, with a slight tanginess from the grape leaves themselves. The addition of pomegranate not only enhances the flavor but also gives the dish a lovely sweetness that complements the other ingredients beautifully.

Stuffed Grape Leaves with Rice and Pomegranate are incredibly versatile and can be served as part of a mezze platter, as a side dish, or as a light main course. They can be enjoyed warm or at room temperature, making them perfect for picnics, potlucks, or casual gatherings. For an extra touch, drizzle them with olive oil and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice just before serving.

This dish is a perfect blend of savory and sweet, and the combination of rice, herbs, and pomegranate makes it a memorable and elegant choice for any meal. Whether you’re new to stuffed grape leaves or a long-time fan, this version is sure to impress with its rich flavors and refreshing contrast.

Took me ages to roll those grape leaves! Is there an easier way? But they taste good, even if they don’t look perfect.

I didn’t have grape leaves so I used cabbage instead and it turned out fine. Not the same, but still good!

Why not just get grape leaves? Cabbage is ok, but grape leaves are traditional for a reason. 🤔

Cabbage?! Really? That’s a wild swap. But glad it worked for you! Might give it a try myself.

These were surprisingly fancy for a weekday dinner. The pomegranate + herbs combo is legit—felt bright and not heavy. I used whatever grape leaves I had and it still worked.

Totally misleading, takes like forever. I’d rather order takeout next time. 1 star!!!

I think it sounds delicious! Maybe you just need to practice rolling them. It’s not hard once you get the hang of it. 5 stars from me!

Can I use brown rice instead? I heard it’s healthier but not sure if it will work in this.

I tried it and the cinnamon tasted weird with the cumin—like dessert vibes. I know it’s traditional in some places, but I’m probably lowering the cinnamon next time.

Simple and tasty! I’ll make these again for sure. My mom would be proud!

Sounds good, but grape leaves? I dunno, not sure about that taste. Is it really that good?

These were delicious! I added some feta cheese on top for extra flavor. Yum!

Way too much mint for my taste… I should’ve dialed it back. Next time I’ll do half and maybe add more parsley so it’s balanced.

Pretty solid instructions. I used brown rice by accident and it still worked, but took way longer than the 15 minutes step (duh). Flavor was still great—mint + dill is a winning combo.

These turned out really flavorful—cumin + cinnamon is a great combo with the pomegranate. My grape leaves were a little tough but still delicious. Will make again!

Made this as a side dish for a party and it got raves! Next time I may try it with chicken too.

The ingredient list is a lot of herbs… I was like, do I really need mint and dill? Answer: yes. It tastes like someone actually knows what they’re doing.

  17. 1 star
These were a disaster for me. I think I overcooked the rice… They fell apart when rolling. 🙁

  18. 1 star
Whaat?! No meat in this? How is that even gonna fill you up? I’m skeptical.

These turned out way better than I expected. The pomegranate makes the filling taste bright and not just “rice + herbs.” I served with extra lemon and it was perfect.

    1. 5 stars
Totally agree—pomegranate really levels it up. I didn’t think it would make that much of a difference, but it does.

I used chicken broth by accident (had none of the veggie stuff) and they still worked. The filling smelled amazing while cooking—like straight-up Mediterranean comfort.
