Shrimp Biryani

January 10, 2025

Shrimp biryani is a fragrant, flavorful dish that combines tender shrimp with aromatic spices and fluffy rice, making it a standout choice for any meal. A fusion of rich, savory flavors with a hint of warmth from spices like cinnamon, cardamom, and cloves, this dish is perfect for those who love bold, complex flavors. Traditionally made with chicken or mutton, shrimp biryani offers a lighter, yet equally delicious, version of the classic recipe.

The base of shrimp biryani begins with long-grain basmati rice, which is cooked separately to retain its fluffy texture. The rice is then layered with sautéed shrimp, which are marinated in yogurt, garlic, ginger, and a blend of spices. The marinade allows the shrimp to soak up all the aromatic flavors, making each bite packed with flavor.

The key to a great biryani is the balance of spices. A blend of turmeric, cumin, coriander, and garam masala infuses the shrimp and rice, creating depth and a warm, fragrant aroma that’s characteristic of this beloved dish. Fresh cilantro and mint leaves are often added as a garnish, adding a pop of color and a refreshing contrast to the rich flavors.

Once the rice and shrimp are layered, the dish is slow-cooked or simmered, allowing the spices to meld and the shrimp to absorb the flavors of the rice. This process helps the dish come together, making the biryani irresistibly fragrant and perfectly spiced.

Shrimp biryani is often served with a side of cooling raita (yogurt with cucumber and spices) or a tangy salad, which helps balance the heat and richness of the dish. It’s a satisfying one-pot meal that’s perfect for special occasions or a weeknight dinner that feels like a celebration. Whether you’re a biryani enthusiast or new to this flavorful world, shrimp biryani is sure to become a favorite.

I don’t think shrimp belongs in biryani. Traditional biryani is with chicken or lamb. Can someone explain?

  2. 3 stars
I tried this recipe but didn’t have Biryani masala, so I used curry powder instead. It tasted off. Not sure if I did something wrong.

Yummm! My family loved it. I added some peas and carrots to the rice for more color. A little bit of spice is nice too. 🙂

Glad your family loved it! Peas and carrots sound like a great addition. Spice brings it to another level. 😊

This Shrimp Biryani turned out amazing! Super flavorful and the shrimp was just perfect. Will definitely make again!

Too spicy for me! I recommend less masala if you have sensitive tongue.

  6. User avatar erika.schuppe6 says:

I followed the steps but my onions didn’t get fully golden brown, so the base tasted a little flat. Next time I’ll caramelize longer.

The instructions are clear and the ratios feel right. My only change: I added whole spices (bay leaf/cardamom) and it turned out even better.

  8. User avatar kam.windler says:

I found this recipe difficult to follow. The shrimp overcooked and the rice was mushy. Not happy with how it turned out.

    1. 4 stars
I think maybe the shrimp got overcooked because they were left on too long? The timing is pretty crucial with seafood. I had a similar issue once, but now I just watch it closely when cooking!

  9. 4 stars
Good flavor, but I think 2 cups water might be a bit much depending on the rice. Mine needed a bit longer on low heat.

Why use yogurt for shrimp? Sounds weird. I just pan-fried the shrimp, and it was way easier.

    1. User avatar lucille.pacocha45 says:

      2 stars
Sounds like too much work for shrimp. I just like it simple, ya know? Pan-frying is quicker for me.

    2. User avatar Snow Bear says:

      5 stars
Yogurt helps to flavor the shrimp and keeps it tender! Give it a try, it’s really tasty!

  11. User avatar liberal.hero says:

Gotta say, shrimp ain’t my thing, but my buddy loved this dish! 😋

  12. 2 stars
Too much work for me. Why not just order some from a restaurant? 😂

    1. User avatar Colin the Security Robot says:

      4 stars
I get that! Sometimes ordering in is just easier. But homemade tastes sooo much better!

    2. User avatar pat.hintz1996 says:

But cooking is fun, you get to eat what you want! Plus, this recipe sounds delicious! 🤤

  13. User avatar Laveta Lesch MD says:

I was skeptical about “1 cup yogurt” but it ended up great. The biryani masala aroma is legit. Only tweak: I added a pinch of saffron and it tasted restaurant-y.

Meh. Shrimp and rice? Sometimes I don’t understand why people love this. Not my thing.

  15. User avatar Gag Halfrunt says:

I dont think shrimp belong in biryani. That being said, it was alright I guess. But I still prefer chicken. 🤷‍♂️

    1. 4 stars
Shrimp biryani is a great twist! I love the taste of shrimp, but I get what you mean about preferring chicken. Each to their own! 🦐🍚

  16. 4 stars
Biryani? I love biriyani!! This like a good recipe, thumbs up!

  17. User avatar ninfa.gaylord75 says:

Looks easy, but shrimp cook quick! I overcooked mine. Use timer next time!

    1. User avatar dalia.johnston says:

      2 stars
Sshrimp? I always just throw ’em in for a few mins without thinkin. Do you really need a timer for this?

    2. User avatar nelson.mueller3 says:

      5 stars
I know right! Shrimp really gets rubbery if you cook it too long. Using a timer is a smart move!

  18. User avatar norbert.borer33 says:

    4 stars
Very good! But can you use frozen shrimp? That’s what I had on hand.

    1. User avatar gino.pacocha32 says:

      5 stars
Yes, you can definitely use frozen shrimp! Just make sure to thaw them properly before marinating, and they should work just as well. Enjoy your meal!

  19. User avatar ivy.sporer64 says:

    4 stars
The ghee made it sooo good! Y’all are missing out if you don’t try this.

  20. User avatar kurtis.stark26 says:

The instructions were kinda confusing. I ended up with a mushy mess. Biryani is s’posed to be fluffy, right?

    1. User avatar Miss Gaylene Hegmann says:

      4 stars
I totally get where you’re coming from! Biryani is meant to be fluffy, not mushy. Maybe try not to stir it too much when cooking! Good luck next time!

    2. User avatar lucius.gleichner78 says:

      2 stars
Fluffy? Never heard of that. Biryani is just spices and rice, how can it be fluffy? Just cook it right next time.

  21. User avatar buena.ratke says:

I don’t get how people love biryani. I find this too complicated for just shrimp. Just grill them instead. 🤷‍♂️

    1. User avatar lisa.halvorson70 says:

      4 stars
Complicated? It’s really not that bad! Just follow the steps, and you’ll be amazed at the taste. Shrimp biryani is something else!

    2. User avatar Frankie and Benjy says:

      5 stars
Biryani is an art! Grilling shrimp is easy, but this dish has layers of flavor you can’t get grilling. Give it a shot!

  24. User avatar monroe.prohaska62 says:

My first time making biryani and it was a disaster! Followed the recipe but my rice turned mushy. Maybe I soaked it too long? 🤔

    1. User avatar eldon.gorczany1992 says:

      3 stars
Mushy rice? I think you mighta added too much water! Next time follow it exactly, it should come out good. 🙁

    2. User avatar ArabianNights says:

      4 stars
Don’t worry, it happens! Maybe try less soaking next time or check the water amount. Biryani can be tricky! 🍚

  25. 4 stars
Yum! I love shrimp biryani but my mom used to add saffron as well. It gives a lovely color!

  26. 5 stars
5 stars! I loved it! This recipe is a keeper. Never thought I could make biryani at home!

  27. User avatar cecil.haag14 says:

It turned out too salty for my taste. I’d recommend reducing the salt to avoid overpowering the dish.

    1. User avatar Super Saiyan Trunks says:

I think you might be overreacting! I found it just right, but I guess everyone has different tastes.

  30. User avatar Winnie Bago says:

The cooking time was way too short. My rice was still crunchy. Need to boil longer next time.

    1. User avatar hiedi.farrell says:

      3 stars
Hmmm, I think it’s about the soaking time. 30 min might not be enough? It worked fine for me.

    2. User avatar teresia.balistreri says:

      4 stars
I had the same issue! My rice was crunchy too, maybe the water amount was off? I’ll try boiling it longer next time.

  31. User avatar howard.gottlieb56 says:

Made this tonight—so flavorful! The yogurt marinade really tenderized the shrimp. My rice cooked perfectly after keeping it on low like the steps say. Will make again.

  32. 5 stars
Simple and easy! I replaced shrimp with chicken and it still turned out mighty fine.

  33. User avatar donnell.brekke36 says:

  36. User avatar jess.glover56 says:

One cup of rice? Are you sure that’s enough? Looks like a snack to me.

  37. User avatar burton.rosenbaum64 says:

  40. User avatar bernie.casper1968 says:

I thought biryani was only with rice and whole spices? This is a weird combo. Not sure if I’ll try it.

    1. User avatar celesta.kuhic says:

      5 stars
Weird combo?? I think it’s great! Biryani can be made with all kinds of meats, not just chicken or mutton! Just try it!

    2. User avatar Arwen Evenstar says:

I get where you’re coming from, but this shrimp biryani sounds delicious! The yogurt makes it creamy, and shrimp really absorbs flavors well. Give it a shot!
