Pumpkin Cupcakes

October 24, 2023

There’s something undeniably comforting about the scent of warm spices and pumpkin filling your kitchen, and these Pumpkin Cupcakes capture that magic in every bite. Light, moist, and perfectly spiced, they’re a fall baking favorite that brings seasonal joy to any occasion.

Made with real pumpkin purée and a blend of cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves, these cupcakes have a rich flavor and tender crumb. Unlike heavier pumpkin desserts, this recipe strikes the perfect balance, light enough for an afternoon treat, yet indulgent enough for holiday celebrations or Thanksgiving dessert tables.

The real star? The frosting. Whether you choose a classic cream cheese frosting, a maple buttercream, or even a cinnamon-spiced whipped topping, it takes these cupcakes to another level. The tanginess of the frosting pairs beautifully with the warm spices of the cake, creating a flavor combo that’s both nostalgic and totally crave-worthy.

What’s great about pumpkin cupcakes is how easy they are to make. No special equipment, no fuss, just a bowl, a whisk, and a muffin tin. They’re also incredibly versatile. Want to make them gluten-free? Swap in your favorite GF flour blend. Need a dairy-free version? Use plant-based milk and vegan butter. You can even add chopped pecans, chocolate chips, or a caramel drizzle for a fun twist.

These cupcakes aren’t just for dessert, either. Pair one with your morning coffee or pack it as a midday pick-me-up. They also make adorable party favors, just pop them into decorative wrappers and tie them with a ribbon.

Whether you’re baking for a fall birthday, Friendsgiving, Halloween party, or simply embracing cozy season at home, Pumpkin Cupcakes bring that sweet, spiced magic we all crave this time of year. Soft, fluffy, and full of flavor, they’re sure to become a seasonal staple in your kitchen.

Not bad, but 1 tsp cinnamon feels too much for me. I’d cut it in half and maybe add more nutmeg to balance it.

  2. 2 stars
I dunno… my cupcakes tasted kinda bland. Maybe I needed more spices? Gonna try adding more cinammon next time.

  3. 4 stars
Honestly… I don’t even have pumpkin, so I used sweet potato puree. And uh, it worked?? But I’m not sure I’d trust it for “exact” cupcakes.

  4. 5 stars
These smell AMAZING while baking. I used a little extra cinnamon and the flavor is perfectly cozy. Texture was fluffy even the next day!

    1. User avatar Delphia Ankunding says:

      5 stars
Right?! The cinnamon/ginger smell is unreal. I love that they stay fluffy the next day too—makes it feel extra “worth it.”

  5. 1 star
Idk why these cupcakes were soggy. I followed the recipe!

  6. User avatar jasper.mclaughlin says:

    2 stars
Followed the recipe exactly, but mine were too dry. What did I do wrong?

  7. 1 star
Pumpkin is for Halloween, not cupcakes! 😛 But I guess some people like it. Not my thing.

    1. User avatar granville.murray says:

      5 stars
I totally disagree! Pumpkin cupcakes are delicious. You’re missing out! 🎃

  8. User avatar Tyree Corkery says:

    3 stars
I don’t know about the spices. Seems like too much cinnamon. Maybe I’ll skip some next time.

  9. 4 stars
Not bad, but I think I prefer carrot cake over pumpkin 😕

  10. User avatar madelaine.macejkovic1966 says:

    5 stars
Made these for my office and they went like crazy! Everyone asked for the recipe!

    1. User avatar Leto Atreides says:

      5 stars
That’s awesome! I’ve been looking for a pumpkin recipe for the fall. Can you share how you frosted them?

  11. User avatar Marissa Mayer says:

    5 stars
Nice! I added some chocolate chips and it was amazing.

  12. User avatar hilma.schamberger2005 says:

    5 stars
I don’t usually bake cupcakes, but these were forgiving. The spices feel like they belong. I added a pinch more cinnamon to the frosting and it really popped.

    1. User avatar lynsey.johnston says:

      3 stars
I tried this and… mine came out kinda dense, not fluffy like the description. I think I might’ve creamed too long? Also I didn’t have nutmeg so I used extra ginger, maybe that threw it off. Still tasted good though—spices were on point.

    2. User avatar fredrick.zieme53 says:

      5 stars
Yes! Pumpkin + warm spices is such a winning combo. I’m glad the batter was forgiving—mine usually gets cranky with overmixing, so this is comforting to hear. Adding a pinch more cinnamon to the frosting is such a good call.

  13. User avatar jessia.ondricka says:

    5 stars
So yummy and easy to make! The spices are just right. Perfect for Thanksgiving!

  14. User avatar tami.ernser69 says:

    4 stars
I think I might try adding some nuts next time. What do you think?

  15. 2 stars
350°F is kinda low? I baked mine at 375 like my usual cupcakes and they came out more golden and less pale. Maybe your oven runs cool? 😅

  16. 2 stars
idk if i did sum wrong but they tasted kinda bland without frosting. maybe i shouldve used more pumpkin? i mean, pumpkin is in there… right?

  17. User avatar suspiciousCommentator says:

    5 stars
My kids loved these! Perfect for Halloween parties! 🎃

  18. User avatar abe.schmeler says:

    5 stars
Yummm! Just what I needed for fall! I added chocolate chips and they were amazing.

    1. User avatar Arthur Dent says:

      5 stars
Chocolate chips sound like a delicious addition! I’m going to try that next time! Thanks for the tip!

    2. User avatar Kary Nienow says:

      2 stars
I dunno, chocolate with pumpkin? Seems weird. But if you liked it, who am I to judge?

  19. User avatar noel.barton says:

    3 stars
These are okay. The spice is there, but I wish it was more pumpkin-y and less cinnamon-forward. Still, not bad for quick cupcakes.

  20. User avatar tamala.ratke says:

    4 stars
Didnt have butter so used margarine, still came out yummy!

  21. User avatar karen.nader2018 says:

    5 stars
Soo good!! I added some chocolate chips and they were divine. Will definitely make again! 😀

    1. User avatar Gabriella says:

      5 stars
Chocolate chips just take it to the next level! 👍 I’m glad you enjoyed them! Can’t wait to try your version!

  22. User avatar zonia.bednar2001 says:

    4 stars
I didn’t have ground cloves, so I used extra nutmeg. Still delicious—just slightly less “pumpkin spice” vibes. Would make again.

    1. User avatar harrison.schuppe80 says:

      5 stars
Ooh that makes sense—cloves are pretty strong, so extra nutmeg would soften it a bit. Glad it still worked out! Pumpkin cupcakes are my weakness 😄

  23. User avatar joleen.moen says:

    2 stars
DIDN’T RISE ENOUGH 😩. Followed everything, toothpick clean, but they’re kinda flat. Maybe my baking soda is old? Still pretty tasty.

  24. User avatar cyndy.ritchie says:

    4 stars
Pumpkin in cupcakes? Is that even a thing? Thought it was for pies. But these are really delightful! Who knew?!

  25. User avatar rene.tillman57 says:

    3 stars
I followed the steps exactly and they came out a little dense. I think I overmixed when adding the dry ingredients—next time I’ll mix just until combined.

  26. User avatar willis.mitchell21 says:

    5 stars
Wow, these were beyond delicious! I added walnuts for a little crunch. My friends can’t stop raving about them. Def doing this again! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

    1. User avatar Garlic Jr says:

      4 stars
I’m glad you liked them! Adding walnuts is a great idea! 😍 I’ve been thinking about making these too, but what if I substitute the pumpkin? Any suggestions?

  27. User avatar stasia.stamm1988 says:

    5 stars
I used pumpkin purée (not pie filling) and it mattered. Great flavor. Also, pro tip: don’t skip creaming butter and sugar.

  28. User avatar elsie.conroy65 says:

    3 stars
I’m skeptical about the 1 cup canned pumpkin amount—mine felt too wet at first. I whisked longer to get the batter right and they ended up okay, but I wouldn’t call it effortless.

    1. 4 stars
Totally get that—pumpkin cans can vary a lot. If yours felt wet, I bet it was slightly more liquid or you didn’t drain it. Glad whisking longer helped though!

    2. User avatar conrad.beer33 says:

      4 stars
Hmm I used 1 cup canned pumpkin and mine were perfect, not too wet at all. Maybe your eggs or butter temp threw it off? I always whisk the pumpkin a bit before adding.

  29. User avatar Slaughterfish says:

    3 stars
I tried this recipe but it didn’t rise well. Not sure if I mixed it too much or what happened. The taste was decent but the texture was off. I’m giving it a 3.

  30. User avatar nikia.roberts1985 says:

    4 stars
Great recipe! But I used half the sugar and they were still sweet! 👍

    1. User avatar Grìma Wormtongue says:

      5 stars
That’s awesome! I might try using less sugar next time too. Thanks for sharing! 😊

    2. User avatar modesto.huels41 says:

      3 stars
Wait, how can they be sweet with half the sugar? 🤔 Guess my taste buds are broken.

  31. 5 stars
YALL! These cupcakes are life-changing. Seriously, best recipe ever!

    1. User avatar rudy.harris73 says:

      5 stars
I totally agree! These cupcakes changed my life too! Just made a batch and they didn’t last long. 😍

  32. 3 stars
My batter was too thick…does baking powder really expire? I’m confused.

    1. User avatar Dremora Lord says:

      3 stars
I don’t get how baking powder can go bad. I always just use what I have. But maybe you just added too much flour? It could happen!

    2. 5 stars
Yes, baking powder can definitely expire! If it’s been sitting in your pantry for a while, it might not work as well. You can test it by adding a bit to warm water and see if it bubbles. If it doesn’t, it’s time to toss it!

  33. User avatar mariah.lebsack says:

    1 star
I substituted coconut flour, they came out like bricks! Don’t do it!

  34. 4 stars
Very tasty! But where’s the chocolate? I mean, chocolate makes everything better.

  35. User avatar alicia.block says:

    5 stars
These cupcakes are amazing! So moist and flavorful. Perfect for fall!

  36. User avatar tissues_with_issues says:

    2 stars
The spices were too much for my taste. I prefer simpler flavors, but my kids loved them!

  37. User avatar paris.dicki10 says:

    3 stars
Confused about the milk part. Is it necessary? I skipped it and they were fine.

    1. 4 stars
Skipping the milk seems to work for you, but it does help with the moisture! I wouldn’t recommend it if you want them fluffy.

  38. User avatar ShanksOnePiece says:

    5 stars
Mmmmm, the spices are on point! Great recipe for Halloween party!

  39. User avatar Chassidy Lueilwitz I says:

    5 stars
Great recipe! Easy to follow and my kids loved them. Will make again! 😉

  40. 3 stars
Wot kind of pumpkins do you use? I jus got a can from the store 😳

  41. User avatar Mrs. Ruul says:

    3 stars
I followed it exactly and they were tasty, but a little dense. Next time I’ll sift the dry ingredients and maybe don’t mix as long. Could be my baking soda is old.

  42. User avatar nanette.morar2021 says:

    3 stars
Mine sank a bit in the middle, not gonna lie. I think I overmixed after adding flour. Still tasted amazing though, so I’ll try again and be gentler.

  43. User avatar Hotblack Desiato's bodyguard says:

    5 stars
These cupcakes are soooo good! 😍

  44. User avatar sherrie.turner says:

    2 stars
Not gonna lie, I don’t like pumpkin in cupcakes. It tastes kinda bland to me, and the spices are too much. Maybe I’ll try again with less cinnamon.

  45. User avatar leesa.leuschke61 says:

    3 stars
Just okay. Prefer chocolate over pumpkin any day. Might try again but with a twist.

  46. User avatar concha.wintheiser says:

    4 stars
Really good flavor! I followed everything except I only had fresh nutmeg so I used a little extra, and it still worked. Texture was great too.

    1. User avatar Dennis Toffice says:

      5 stars
Love hearing that! Extra nutmeg is totally believable with these—pumpkin + warm spices can handle it. 😄

  47. User avatar marcel.brown51 says:

    2 stars
I followed the recipe exactly but my cupcakes came out super dense. What did I do wrong?

  48. User avatar cedrick.bergnaum68 says:

    5 stars
Made these last night and they smelled like a cozy fall candle in the oven. Super moist and the spice mix is spot on. I used a little extra cinnamon in the frosting and it was perfection.

  49. User avatar geoWizard says:

    2 stars
I followed the recipe exactly but mine came out too dry. What did I do wrong?

  50. User avatar huey.armstrong67 says:

    5 stars
These were absolutely delicious! Perfect for fall!

  51. User avatar reginald.blick says:

    2 stars
I don’t know, I think there was too much pumpkin? Or maybe I just don’t like pumpkin that much.

  52. 3 stars
Are you sure these are cupcakes and not muffins? Seem like they should be more sweet.

  53. User avatar eli.gerlach39 says:

    4 stars
The directions are clear, but “mix until just combined” saved me—overmixing would’ve ruined it. Texture was moist and fluffy.

    1. User avatar virgen.wolf says:

      3 stars
I kinda disagree—if it says mix until just combined, I usually mix a tiny bit longer? Like 2-3 min on medium. Also 18-20 minutes seems short to me… maybe my oven runs cold. Still, pumpkin cupcakes are always good.

    2. User avatar neva.blick2025 says:

      5 stars
Yes!! “Just combined” is the secret. I learned that the hard way once and my cupcakes turned out chewy instead of tender 😅 Your moist + fluffy combo sounds perfect.

  54. User avatar lynsey.hill49 says:

    5 stars
Delicious! I added some chocolate chips for extra fun 😍

  55. 3 stars
Just ok. I expected more flavor. Are you sure this makes 12 cupcakes? Seems like less!

  56. User avatar lavina.upton71 says:

    4 stars
Not sure about the canned pumpkin amount—1 cup seems small compared to the rest. I used 15 oz can and it was perfect though, so maybe I was overthinking.

    1. User avatar smartestRedditor says:

      5 stars
I think 1 cup canned pumpkin is right—most 15 oz cans are about 1.5 cups total, so you just don’t use the whole thing. Your “15 oz worked” makes sense if you measured more than the recipe calls for (or if your can size/measurement was different).

    2. User avatar Brooks Nitzsche says:

      4 stars
15 oz can perfect?? That sounds like you maybe accidentally used the full amount, lol. I’ve always done 1 cup pumpkin and they come out moist but not gummy. Maybe yours were a bit denser but still delicious.

  57. User avatar lanny.jast1973 says:

    2 stars
Meh. Cupcakes came out okay, but I swear my toothpick never got “clean” even after 20 min. Ended up underbaked, I think.

  58. User avatar ebonie.ward says:

    5 stars
My family demolished these in like 10 minutes 😅 Moist, perfectly spiced. I’m making them again for Thanksgiving.

    1. 3 stars
I tried this but mine came out kinda dense… probably overmixed? Also 1 cup pumpkin is usually for a full loaf, so I wasn’t sure about the amount. Still decent though—will try again with less mixing.

    2. User avatar lyndsay.heaney says:

      5 stars
Just made these today and omg—so moist! The spice balance is spot on. I did bake them 19 minutes and they came out perfect. Definitely adding to our Thanksgiving rotation 😄

  59. User avatar jeanett.torp95 says:

    5 stars
These cupcakes are delicious! I made them for a fall gathering and everyone loved them. Will definitely make again!

  60. User avatar marianna.jacobs88 says:

    5 stars
Absolutely love these! Perfect for fall gatherings. 🍂

  61. 4 stars
Creaming butter and sugars “until light and fluffy” is hard for me. I probably didn’t cream long enough, but the taste was still great—will try longer.

  62. User avatar Pizpot Gargravarr says:

    2 stars
Too much spice for my taste! I like the pumpkin but not all those added flavors. 😕

  63. User avatar eugenia.gaylord72 says:

    4 stars
These are better than the box mix I tried once. But I wish the recipe gave frosting instructions, because “frost with cream cheese frosting” is vague for beginners.

  64. User avatar monnie.bechtelar says:

    5 stars
These pumpkin cupcakes are absolutely delicious! Perfect for fall! 🍂

  65. User avatar echo.gerhold62 says:

    5 stars
Yummm!! I’m not even a pumpkin fan but these cupcakes are sooo good! Definitely recommend! 👍

  66. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

    2 stars
I don’t get how these are cupcakes. They taste like muffins to me.

  67. User avatar Deep Thought says:

    3 stars
I accidentally used salted butter instead of unsalted and they were still fine. Might be why the salt felt a little strong, but overall good.

    1. User avatar odis.mcglynn14 says:

      4 stars
Salted butter “still fine” is honestly surprising to me 😅 but maybe canned pumpkin is sweet enough to balance it. I’d try unsalted next time though just to compare.

    2. 5 stars
Oh good to know! I always forget whether my butter is salted or not. If it tastes a bit strong, could just reduce the added salt next time (or use unsalted).

  68. 5 stars
Yum! I’ll be making these every month! ❤️

  69. 3 stars
Just okay, not bad, also not super exciting. Meh.

  70. User avatar beth.wintheiser says:

    5 stars
Delicious! Not too sweet but super moist. My hubby loves them! 🍰❤️

  71. 3 stars
I accidentally used sweet potato instead of pumpkin. Still tasted ok, but different!

  72. User avatar annamae.torphy says:

    4 stars
The ginger/nutmeg/cloves combo is kinda wow. I’m usually skeptical about cloves but it works here.

  73. 3 stars
Cupcakes are alright. Took longer to bake than 20 mins tho. Next time I’ll check them earlier.

  74. User avatar carolin.mcglynn84 says:

    4 stars
The ingredient list is solid. 1 cup canned pumpkin is my favorite part. I added chopped pecans and it elevated them a lot.

    1. User avatar Becki Schaefer says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—canned pumpkin makes these so much easier and consistent. Pecans sound like the perfect crunchy upgrade. Did you toast them first?

    2. 3 stars
Hmm I’m not sure about the pecans. Pumpkin cupcakes already have a lot going on with the spices—might get too heavy? But I guess if you chop them small it could be nice.

  75. 3 stars
I followed this recipe but they came out too dry. Any tips?

  76. 4 stars
I was skeptical about the ginger + cloves combo, but wow. It’s not overpowering, just warm. Also, 350°F worked perfectly and the toothpick test was legit.

  77. User avatar erwin.stamm1975 says:

    5 stars
These turned out super fluffy and the spice blend is spot-on. I used fresh nutmeg too—made the whole kitchen smell like fall. Would definitely bake again.

  78. User avatar annabell.fadel79 says:

    2 stars
Why do we even need all those spices? Just use cinnamon, less complicated.

  79. User avatar Hotblack Desiato's bodyguard says:

    3 stars
Great recipe, but I gotta say, I forgot to add the vanilla! Oops.

  80. User avatar Super Saiyan Goku says:

    2 stars
I may be wrong but I think the baking soda might be unnecessary if there’s baking powder too. I didn’t change it though—just wondering.

    1. User avatar cary.keebler says:

      4 stars
You’re not crazy—baking powder and baking soda do overlap. Baking soda is usually about balancing acidity (like sour milk/buttermilk), so since pumpkin is a bit acidic, it likely helps too. I’d keep both as written unless you’re testing replacements.

  81. User avatar michiko.kris86 says:

    5 stars
I followed the recipe exactly and they were perfect. The spice mix tastes really balanced, not too heavy on any one thing.

  82. 4 stars
My kids loved these! I omitted the cloves because we didn’t have any and they still turned out yummy!

    1. User avatar Grandpa Gohan says:

      5 stars
That’s awesome! Love that your kids enjoyed them. Omitting cloves is a good idea if you don’t have them. Will definitely try that next time!

  83. User avatar Ms. Danae Metz says:

    3 stars
Not gonna lie, I found it a bit too sweet. Also, I’m not sure about the flour amount vs pumpkin—doughy at first until I rested it.

  84. 3 stars
I don’t have pumpkin can, can I use fresh pumpkin? Anyone tried that?

  85. User avatar Oolon Colluphid says:

    3 stars
I tried making these, but they came out kinda dry. Maybe I overbaked them? Not sure what went wrong.

    1. 4 stars
Overbaking can definitely dry them out! Maybe try reducing the baking time a bit next time. Hope you give them another shot!

  86. User avatar otha.champlin says:

    5 stars
I used pumpkin purée (not pie filling) and followed the mixing steps—came out fluffy. Cinnamon/ginger is on point. 10/10 comfort food.

  87. 2 stars
Not gonna lie, 18-20 minutes is a long time—mine were kinda dry by 20. Next time I’ll check at 16-18.

  88. User avatar Su Shenlong says:

    5 stars
I was skeptical about the ginger + cloves combo but wow. It actually tastes like fall, not like soap. Would make again.

    1. User avatar Septimus says:

      3 stars
I’m not sure about the cloves either… like, wouldn’t it taste kinda medicinal? I might reduce it next time. Still, pumpkin cupcakes at 350 for 18-20 min sounds right.

    2. User avatar lakita.crist44 says:

      5 stars
Same here—I thought cloves would be way too intense, but it’s actually warm and balanced. “Tastes like fall” is so accurate 😂

  89. 4 stars
Yall should try adding whipped cream on top, itz even better!

  90. User avatar takako.kassulke says:

    5 stars
Yum! Made for a party and they were gone in minutes.

  91. 4 stars
I don’t like pumpkin that much, but these were really good. Might make again!

  92. User avatar gretchen.schroeder says:

The ingredient list looks solid, but I wish it included how much frosting. I tried to wing it and it turned into a frosting situation 😂

No worries, just wing it like a pro 😎 What I do: make frosting, then stop when it looks right. Baking is more art than math sometimes. (But I get your point—recipes should say how much!)

😂 I feel this! Yeah, the ingredient list doesn’t specify the frosting quantity, so it’s super easy to over/under-shoot. I usually make enough cream cheese frosting to generously cover each cupcake—if you like thick swirls, you’ll want a bit more than “just a light spread.”

Cream the butter + sugar until “light and fluffy” took me way longer than the recipe suggests. But once I got it right, the crumb was really tender.

These smell AMAZING. I used a homemade pumpkin puree and the spice level felt just right—sweet but not overwhelming. Got fluffy tops too.

Not bad, but I think the batter is too thick with only 1/4 cup milk. Mine was like cookie dough. I added a splash more milk and then it was normal.

Yeah I ran into that too—mine was super thick at 1/4 cup milk. Once I added a tablespoon or two extra it finally looked like real cupcake batter and baked up much nicer.

Okay so I followed it but my batter felt really thick? I added like 1-2 more tablespoons milk and they came out fine. Still, the “alternating with milk” part was confusing for me.

I followed the steps exactly and mine domed a lot and cracked on top. Tastes great, but presentation wasn’t as pretty—maybe my oven runs hot.

I’m so glad to hear that! These cupcakes really do have a way of disappearing fast. They’re a hit for any occasion!

My batter looked thick, like really thick. I added an extra splash of milk and it came out better. Not sure if that’s just my pumpkin brand though.

Yeah, pumpkin batter can look *super* thick—especially with canned pumpkin that’s on the drier side. Your extra splash of milk makes total sense.

These look good, but how long do I bake them for again? Will they really come out good like the pic?

You bake them for 18-20 minutes. And trust me, they turn out amazing! Just like the picture!

I’m skeptical about the spices being too much, but honestly it worked. Ginger + cloves gave it this warm, cozy vibe.

Mine turned out a bit dense, I think I overmixed after adding the flour. Still tasty though—warm spice flavor is on point.

These pumpkin cupcakes are a fall must! So moist and full of flavor. Used cream cheese frosting as suggested and it complimented them perfectly! 5 stars!

Too many spices for my taste. Could tone it down a bit.

These turned out super cozy and perfectly spiced. I used a toothpick at 19 minutes and they were moist—not dry at all. My family asked for seconds 😄

Simple and easy! Will make again for sure!

I tried making these but they turned out super dry. Maybe I overbaked? 🤔

Cupcakes are cute, but the instructions mention frosting with cream cheese and then… nothing about the frosting recipe? Had to google. Still, the cupcakes are worth it.

Made these for a potluck at work, and they were totally gone! Everyone wanted the recipe. Thanks for sharing! 🙂
