Olive Garden Five Cheese Ziti Copycat Recipe

July 3, 2025

When it comes to crave-worthy comfort food, Olive Garden’s Five Cheese Ziti al Forno stands out as one of the chain’s most popular dishes. It’s rich, cheesy, satisfying, and has earned a devoted fanbase that keeps coming back for more. While Olive Garden offers a variety of Italian-American staples, this baked pasta has found a special place in the hearts (and stomachs) of many.

Part of its popularity lies in its indulgent nature. The name itself -“Five Cheese Ziti al Forno” promises a decadent, oven-baked experience. It suggests warmth, richness, and generosity, which are all key elements in comfort food. Diners know what to expect: a hearty portion of pasta covered in a creamy, cheesy blend and finished with a golden-brown topping. It’s a dish that feels homemade, even when ordered from a chain restaurant.

The Five Cheese Ziti has also benefited from social media buzz. Fans often post pictures of the gooey, cheesy pasta on Instagram or rave about it in food reviews. It regularly pops up in copycat recipes online and food challenge videos, proving that it’s not just a restaurant item, it’s a cultural favorite. TikTok foodies and YouTube creators have praised its flavor, size, and how well it reheats, making it a top pick for takeout or leftovers.

Another reason for its popularity is its wide appeal. It’s meatless, making it suitable for vegetarians, but hearty enough to satisfy any appetite. It’s family-friendly, rich in flavor, and doesn’t stray too far from classic comfort food flavors, making it a safe yet satisfying option for many diners.

In a world of ever-changing food trends, Five Cheese Ziti al Forno sticks to what works: warm, melty, and familiar. It’s not flashy or experimental, and that’s exactly why people love it. When diners want something filling and delicious, this dish delivers every time, earning its spot as a top menu favorite.

So simple and delicious! My kids devoured it and asked for seconds. Will make again!

Sounds amazing! Can’t wait to try this for my family. Really love that they asked for seconds!

Is this really that good? I tried a similar recipe once and it didn’t turn out great. Maybe I’ll stick to takeout.

  2. 5 stars
The Italian seasoning feels like the missing step! I used dried basil too and it kicked it up. Also my oven runs hot so I checked at 18 minutes.

  3. User avatar Glossu "Beast" Rabban says:

    4 stars
Is that even a real restaurant? I ain’t never heard of it. But this dish is good! Even my grandma loved it!

  4. User avatar Sand-Dial says:

    4 stars
I messed up the cooking time and burnt mine a bit, but it still tasted good! Will try again.

    1. User avatar romona.okeefe25 says:

Burnt? How do you burn cheese? That’s the best part! Maybe keep an eye on it next time. 🤔

    2. User avatar Kandice Hansen says:

      5 stars
That’s the spirit! Even burnt a bit, it must’ve been delicious with all that cheese! Good luck on your next try!

  5. User avatar Christia Skiles says:

    4 stars
Very delicious, made it for dinner last night and it was a hit! I might just make this for every family gathering!

  6. 3 stars
    LOL it’s just pasta, but I guess it’s fine. Mediocre = 3.

  7. User avatar ramiro.waelchi says:

Confusing to me how you mix ricotta into the sauce but then only top with mozzarella/parmesan/etc. I would’ve mixed some of the shredded cheeses in too. Still, it was tasty.

    1. User avatar gregg.champlin78 says:

      5 stars
I totally get what you mean! I mix the ricotta into the sauce so it basically melts in and makes it creamy throughout. The topping cheeses are mostly for that browned, bubbly top layer—like the “lasagna vibe.” But yeah, if you mixed a bit of the shredded cheese into the sauce too, I bet it’d be even cheesier. Appreciate you calling it out—glad it still tasted good though!

  8. User avatar edwardo.cronin says:

    3 stars
Tasted good, but mine came out a bit dry even with the bake time. I think my oven runs hot. Maybe add a splash more marinara or sauce next time.

  9. 2 stars
Why use both sauces? Seems messy 🤷‍♂️

  10. 2 stars
Not what I expected. It was a bit dry. I prefer more sauce! 2/5.

    1. 5 stars
I totally agree! It needs way more sauce to be moist. I add extra when I make it. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

  11. User avatar gracie.walsh says:

    2 stars
This is too rich for my taste. I guess I prefer simpler dishes. Just my opinion.

    1. 3 stars
Rich? I think this sounds delicious! More cheese is always better! But we all have different tastes, I guess.

    2. 4 stars
I get that! Not everyone likes cheesy, saucy dishes. Have you tried a simpler pasta like aglio e olio? It’s just garlic, olive oil, and pasta! Way easier and lighter.

  12. User avatar stepanie.hermann37 says:

    4 stars
I used penne instead of ziti and it still worked! Tasty!

  13. User avatar elanor.ohara says:

    5 stars
Wow, it came out perfectly! Used a jar of homemade sauce instead of marinara, great flavor!

  14. User avatar leatrice.kertzmann15 says:

Why you gotta put so much cheese? It gave me a stomach ache. 1 star.

    1. 4 stars
I get it, cheese can be heavy on the stomach. Maybe try cutting down on the cheese next time? 4 stars for the idea though!

    2. User avatar debbie.adams1950 says:

      2 stars
1 star for too much cheese? Seems a bit harsh! It’s a five cheese recipe, that’s like its whole thing! 😄

  15. 5 stars
Yum!!😍 I added some cooked sausage and it took it to the next level. Can’t wait to make it again!

  16. User avatar micha.hudson1977 says:

    3 stars
It was okay, but too cheesy for my taste. I would give it a 3.

  17. User avatar nancy.sanford1988 says:

Tried this last night—super cheesy and comforting. The mix of marinara + alfredo is spot on. I used fresh mozzarella and it got nice and bubbly. Would make again!

    1. User avatar danny.johnston2001 says:

      5 stars
Yes!! Totally agree—the marinara + alfredo combo is the whole point. I’m glad the fresh mozzarella worked for you too 😄

  18. User avatar Esteban Huels says:

    5 stars
Made this last night and it was seriously cheesy heaven. I used a little extra mozzarella because… why not. Next time I’ll bake 2–3 minutes longer for extra golden top.

  19. User avatar Emily Saunders says:

    5 stars
Wow, just wow! Best pasta dish ever! Definitely going to make this again!

  21. User avatar fonda.blick24 says:

Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about using both marinara and alfredo together, but it works. Next time I might add a pinch of garlic powder though—something felt just a little flat.

    1. User avatar Liet-Kynes says:

      3 stars
I tried this and it was kinda bland too. I followed it exactly (no garlic powder). Maybe I overcooked the ziti? Or should I use more parmesan? The cheeses are kinda strong but idk.

    2. User avatar Majin Vegeta says:

      5 stars
Honestly same—thought the marinara + alfredo combo would be weird, but it’s crazy good. I added a tiny bit of garlic powder and it definitely brought it more “Italian” for me.

  22. 3 stars
Too much work for one meal… I’ll just go to Olive Garden instead.

    1. 5 stars
It’s totally worth the effort if you love cheese! The taste will be way better than takeout.

  23. 3 stars
Eh, it was alright. But I think it needed more seasoning. I added garlic and it was better.

    1. User avatar thaddeus.corkery4 says:

      5 stars
I totally agree! More seasoning makes a big difference. Garlic is always a good add! Next time, try some red pepper flakes too, gives it a kick! 😋

    2. 3 stars
Seasoning? I thought it was pretty rich already, with all those cheeses. You sure you followed the recipe right? 🤔

  24. User avatar henry.upton8 says:

    5 stars
This recipe was amazing! It taste just like Olive Garden’s. I couldn’t believe how good it came out!

    1. User avatar cortney.mertz62 says:

      5 stars
Glad you loved it! I thought it would be hard to make, but it really turned out well! Thanks for sharing!

  25. 4 stars
I left out the asiago and used cheddar instead. Still turned out yum!

  26. User avatar marguerita.conroy77 says:

    4 stars
This recipe makes me feel like a chef, so easy! 4 stars from me.

  27. User avatar kennith.muller says:

I’m skeptical about mixing ricotta straight into sauce, but it worked. Texture was nice and creamy. The 20–25 minutes was perfect for me.

    1. User avatar malka.runolfsdottir says:

      5 stars
I was skeptical too, but if it turned out creamy then I’m sold 😅 Next time I’ll probably stir the ricotta in at the end so it doesn’t seize up.

    2. User avatar shirlee.hegmann says:

      4 stars
20-25 minutes is def spot on for me. I mixed it once and it got all creamy, like lasagna vibes. Gonna make this again for sure.

  28. 2 stars
I used 12 oz ziti instead of 8 and kept the same sauces… big mistake 😅 It overflowed and was more like pasta soup. Recipe’s probably fine if followed exactly.

  29. User avatar tajuana.bruen says:

    3 stars
Mine turned out a bit oily, I think because my butter was too much or I let the cheese get too browned. Still tasty, just need to tweak the bake time for sure.

  30. 3 stars
Pretty good but honestly didn’t taste like Olive Garden to me. Need more flavor or something. I would rate it 3.

    1. User avatar ArabianNights says:

      2 stars
Honestly, I don’t think it needs more flavor. I thought it was great as it is! Maybe you just don’t like the Olive Garden taste?

    2. User avatar lonnie.hodkiewicz says:

      4 stars
I get what you mean! I tried it and added some garlic powder and crushed red pepper to boost the flavor. It made a big difference! Maybe give that a shot next time?

  31. User avatar Ahmed Prohaska says:

    1 star
Ziti pasta is overrated! Can’t believe people go crazy for this. I’m a spaghetti person.

  32. User avatar akilah.graham10 says:

    5 stars
5 stars for sure! So cheesy and comforting. The kids loved it, and I didn’t even tell them it was a copycat recipe.

  33. 1 star
Y did you use so much cheese tho? That don’t seem healthy. 🤷‍♂️

  34. 4 stars
Mmm… the butter on top is really good! I added some garlic too.

    1. 5 stars
I totally agree! The butter adds such a nice richness. Garlic is a great touch! I think next time I’ll try some herbs too.

    2. User avatar tamra.bauch30 says:

      2 stars
Really? I don’t know, butter and garlic together sounds weird. I thought butter was a lot on its own…

  35. User avatar cornelius.hettinger says:

    3 stars
I followed the recipe to a T, but it came out kinda dry. Maybe I should have added more sauce? Not sure, but it was just OK for me.

  36. User avatar Stanton Gulgowski says:

    2 stars
Eh, it was okay. The cheese was way too much for my taste. Next time I’d go lighter on the cheeses.

  37. User avatar paulita.ebert30 says:

    5 stars
This recipe is pure heaven! I made it for my family, and they couldn’t get enough. Honestly, it’s better than Olive Garden!

  38. User avatar al.sipes82 says:

    5 stars
The cheeses are doing the heavy lifting here. Romano and asiago make it taste fancy. Also the butter on top? Chef’s kiss. Can’t mess this up lol.

  39. User avatar modesto.altenwerth says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, 5 cheeses sounds like marketing, but the flavor actually does come through. Asiago + romano together is the move. I’d make it again.

    1. User avatar hugh.kuhic2024 says:

      3 stars
Hmm I’m not convinced it’s “copycat” unless the sauce is like Olive Garden’s for real. Also, I think the ricotta should be mixed in the sauce heavier? Mine usually turns out a bit thick. Still sounds cheesy tho 😅

    2. User avatar percy.hodkiewicz says:

      5 stars
Agree—“five cheeses” can sound gimmicky, but when you actually layer them like this, it totally works. Asiago + romano especially gives it that sharp, savory pop. I’d make it again too!

  40. User avatar naida.bahringer35 says:

    5 stars
Delicious! Tasted just like Olive Garden! Will make again.

  41. 2 stars
This was way too rich for me… I couldn’t finish a plate. Next time, I’ll try less cheese.

    1. User avatar nakia.walker83 says:

      4 stars
I totally get that! It can be a bit too cheesy. I usually cut down on the cheeses too. Maybe try it with just a mix of mozzarella and parmesan next time!

  42. User avatar Spriggan Matron says:

    4 stars
This was way better than I expected! Family loved it! 👌

  43. User avatar aurelio.skiles2002 says:

    2 stars
Tried it, but honestly, too much cheese. I only put half the cheese and it was still rich.

  44. 3 stars
Not sure what the fuss is about. It was okay but needed more flavor.

  45. User avatar nichelle.pacocha says:

    3 stars
Not gonna lie, 8 oz pasta for all that cheese feels kinda wild (in a good way?) I’m worried it’ll be too salty with parmesan/asiago/romano all together. Anyone know if romano is always that intense?

    1. 4 stars
I’ve made versions like this and honestly I think the saltiness depends more on the cheese brands than the recipe. Some romano is super punchy, some is mild-ish. Also ziti water + sauce usually helps. If it tastes too salty later, a little extra alfredo or a splash of milk when reheating can fix it.

    2. User avatar bobbi.lehner15 says:

      4 stars
Romano *can* be intense, yeah—it’s usually saltier and sharper than parmesan. But 8 oz pasta is probably not “too much” since there’s also ricotta + alfredo to mellow it. If you’re worried, use a lighter hand on the romano (or swap it half parm/half romano).

  46. User avatar jettie.schinner80 says:

    4 stars
375°F for 20-25 minutes feels too short for my oven. The top got golden but the center wasn’t super hot after. I’ll cover it with foil next time and bake longer.

  47. User avatar eula.schamberger7 says:

    4 stars
Can I use a different kind of pasta? I’m not a fan of ziti. Still wanna try this though.

  48. User avatar irwin.oreilly82 says:

    1 star
Totally deceiving! Mine came out burnt! What did I do wrong?!

    1. User avatar Reg Nullify says:

      4 stars
Maybe your oven was too hot? I had to adjust the temp for mine too.

  49. 2 stars
I ain’t never heard of asiago cheese before. Can I just use cheddar?

  50. User avatar chelsea.ratke43 says:

    5 stars
So easy and delicious, I could eat this every week! ❤️

    1. 5 stars
I totally agree! This recipe has become a staple in my house. Love it! 😊

    2. User avatar cicely.schmeler2022 says:

      3 stars
Looks good, but is it really that easy? My last attempt at a ziti didn’t turn out well.

  51. User avatar carroll.lemke61 says:

    4 stars
Pretty good copycat vibes. My only tweak: I added a pinch of garlic powder because it felt a little flat without it. Still tasted like Olive Garden comfort food though.

  52. User avatar giovanni.abbott says:

    3 stars
Followed directions exactly—375 for 25 minutes—and mine was still kinda pale. Maybe my cheese didn’t melt right because I bought pre-shredded mozzarella.

  53. 3 stars
Wait, do you bake it covered or uncovered? I just left it uncovered like the recipe says and it was fine, but the top hardened pretty quickly.

  54. User avatar pia.kiehn1983 says:

    5 stars
Made it for dinner and everyone went back for seconds. The ricotta keeps it creamy and the five cheeses are legit. Next time I’ll add a little garlic powder to the sauce mix.

  55. 5 stars
ziti pasta is the best! true American favorite!

    1. 5 stars
Absolutely! Ziti pasta is delicious, especially when loaded with cheese! 😍

    2. User avatar douglass.ledner6 says:

      3 stars
It’s good, but I’ve had better. Ziti isn’t the only pasta out there, you know. 🤔

  56. User avatar maryellen.pouros says:

    2 stars
I followed it exactly and it came out bland. Like, I could barely taste the Italian seasoning. Might be my marinara was weak. Not gonna lie, disappointed.

    1. 2 stars
Ugh, that’s super disappointing—especially if you followed it exactly. 1/2 tsp Italian seasoning feels low for a whole 8 oz of ziti, and if the marinara was mild or watery it won’t carry much flavor. Next time try bumping seasoning (or adding garlic powder + a pinch of salt) and make sure the marinara is thicker—simmer it a couple minutes if it’s thin.

    2. User avatar ike.armstrong72 says:

      3 stars
Maybe your oven temp was off? Like 375 is fine but my broil got it too hot and it tasted better, idk 😂 Also 1 cup marinara + 1 cup alfredo sounds kinda too much creamy for “Italian” taste. I’d do more marinara and less alfredo next time.

  57. User avatar zonia.hartmann73 says:

    5 stars
This tasted super close to my favorite takeout—creamy, cheesy, and not dry at all. I used a little extra marinara because I like it saucier, and it was perfect.

  58. 4 stars
Pretty good, but mine was a bit greasy on top. I think I used too much butter? Still flavorful though—would make again with slightly less butter.

  59. User avatar rudy.crooks13 says:

    5 stars
Made this last night and it’s *so* close to the restaurant vibe. The five-cheese combo is legit—next time I’ll bake it 5 minutes longer for extra browning.

  60. User avatar tia.deckow93 says:

    4 stars
Okay but why does it need ALL the cheeses? 😅 It’s delicious though. I’m just not sure my grocery bill agrees.

  61. User avatar yellowjacket says:

    4 stars
    So cheesy omg

    1. 5 stars
Right?! The combo of alfredo + marinara with all those cheeses is unreal 😍

  62. User avatar blair.price says:

    5 stars
This looks *so* close to the Olive Garden version. The combo of marinara + alfredo is genius, and using all those cheeses definitely makes it feel special. I’ll probably add a little extra Italian seasoning too. ⭐️

    1. User avatar Loren Kirlin says:

      3 stars
Not gonna lie, too much cheese for me. Like wouldn’t it get kinda heavy? I’d cut the ricotta or use only parm + mozzarella. Still, sounds good if you like it super rich.

    2. User avatar hippopotamus says:

      5 stars
Yes!! That marinara + alfredo combo is basically the whole magic. I always do a pinch more Italian seasoning too—makes it taste more “restaurant” 😄

  63. User avatar kasie.beier says:

    4 stars
Okay, this is pretty close to what I remember—love the combo of marinara + alfredo. I did have to stir longer so the ricotta fully mixed in, but it still came out great.

  64. User avatar rebecka.turcotte81 says:

    2 stars
Five cheeses sounds fancy but kinda heavy. Like, I love cheese, but this was almost too rich. Might reduce the alfredo a bit or use more marinara next time.

  65. User avatar rosemarie.gibson says:

    3 stars
375°F for 20-25 minutes seems short for me—mine was bubbly but not really golden. I ended up baking like 10 minutes more.

  66. User avatar enrique.grimes25 says:

    4 stars
I didn’t have asiago, so I subbed more parmesan. Still tasted great. Only thing is it came out a bit saucy—maybe my pasta was less al dente than I thought.

  67. User avatar scottie.smith90 says:

    3 stars
Tasted fine but mine looked kinda dry even with the butter. I think I should’ve used a larger baking dish? Also, my oven runs hot.

    1. 2 stars
Mine came out dry too 😅 I followed it but my cheese kinda clumped. Also I think the butter amount is too little—like 2 tbsp is barely anything. Next time I’m gonna add more butter or maybe cover it with foil for the first 10 mins.

    2. User avatar abe.mills63 says:

      4 stars
That makes sense—if your oven runs hot and the dish was a bit smaller/deeper, it could’ve dried out. I’d try a slightly larger baking dish (or add 2–4 tbsp extra sauce/alce of the jar) and bake closer to 20 minutes, then check for bubbly/golden instead of waiting.

  68. User avatar cedric.bergstrom says:

    3 stars
Okay, but it necessary to use so many cheeses? My kids said it was too cheesy!

  69. User avatar valencia.watsica14 says:

    3 stars
Followed it step by step but the cheese was a bit too much for me 😅

  70. User avatar Draugr Scourge says:

    5 stars
This tasted way closer to Olive Garden than I expected. The combo of marinara + alfredo is the secret sauce, literally. I did bake it 23 minutes and it came out bubbly and golden.

    1. User avatar chanell.swift says:

      5 stars
Wow, that’s awesome—“secret sauce” is exactly right. I’ve made this combo before but never timed it quite like 23 minutes. The bubbly/golden top is the whole point 😄

  71. 5 stars
This recipe is AMAZING! Tastes just like Olive Garden!

  72. User avatar heidi.trantow says:

    3 stars
I followed it exactly but my ricotta didn’t really mix in? Like it clumped. Maybe my ricotta was too cold when I added it. Fixable though.

  73. User avatar darrel.cassin says:

    4 stars
I’m not usually a “copycat” person, but this was easy and the instructions were clear. I might reduce the bake time by 3-4 minutes because my cheese browned fast.

Totally agree on tweaking bake time—cheese browns at warp speed in my oven too. I’d start checking around 16-18 minutes so it doesn’t get too dark.

Hmm 375 seems low? I usually bake closer to 400 so the top gets crispy. But if your cheese browned fast, yeah cut the time. Also I think you should mix the parmesan in the sauce not only on top, maybe.

It’s decent, but I found it a little too salty with all those cheeses. Maybe half the romano/parmesan next time. Otherwise the texture was nice.

Honestly… seems overcomplicated for ziti. Also, baking 20-25 mins at 375 with that much cheese? Seems rushed. I’d rather just cook it and serve immediately.

I’m skeptical. Five cheeses sounds like marketing. Also i kinda forgot to let it cool and it was a mess lol. But flavor was pretty good, so I guess I’m wrong. 😅

Honestly I get it—“five cheeses” does sound like marketing. But once it’s baked, that mix really is the point. Sorry yours was a mess though… forgetting to cool can totally make it slide around. 😅

lol same! I rushed it and ate right away and it was like cheesy soup. I thought I messed it up but flavor still slapped. Next time I’ll wait the 5-10 min—your bake time prob was fine.

So easy and so cheesy! Family devoured it in like 5 minutes. 10/10 would bake again.

The seasoning balance is on point. 1/2 tsp Italian seasoning is perfect—doesn’t taste bland at all.

Not gonna lie, $ for $ I don’t think this is worth it compared to just buying a jar of premade stuff. But it was fun to cook and the flavor was good.

I tried this and it came out dry. I followed the steps exactly but I guess my ziti was too long in the oven. Sauce didn’t really cling.

This recipe is a fake! Olive Garden has secret ingredients! I don’t believe it.

I wouldn’t call it fake! With the right mix of ingredients, you can get close enough. Just give it a try!

I tried it and it was tasty, but mine came out a bit thicker/drier than expected. I think next time I’ll use slightly more marinara or add a splash of pasta water when mixing. Still a solid comfort meal though.

Made this last night and it came out super creamy. The combination of alfredo + ricotta is genius, and the cheese blend tastes way more “real” than I expected. I’ll definitely do this again.

Love hearing this! The alfredo + ricotta combo really does make it creamy without tasting weird. Glad the “real” cheese flavor hit for you—hope it turns out even better next time!

This is pretty much Olive Garden at home… except cheaper. I used pre-shredded mozzarella and it still melted well. 10/10 comfort food.

375°F seems too low to get golden in 20-25 mins… I waited, but it stayed kinda pale. I ended up broiling for like 2 mins and then it finally looked right.

    1. User avatar mara.towne says:

Totally agree—cheese can look pale at 375°F if the dish isn’t super hot/loaded evenly. Broiling for a minute or two makes sense. Next time I’d try baking closer to 25–30 mins or letting it sit in the hot oven a bit before broiling.

    2. 4 stars
Maybe your oven runs cool? 375°F is right on paper, but if the baking dish was thicker or you used a lot of sauce, it can take longer to bubble. Quick fix: crank to 400°F or broil at the end like you did (but watch it—cheese goes from golden to burnt fast).

I messed up and underbaked it (maybe my oven runs cool). The cheese was melty but not golden. Next time I’ll do the full 25 mins and cover with foil if it browns too fast.

    1. 4 stars
Ugh that’s the worst—though your fix makes sense. If the cheese is melty but not golden, it usually just needs a few more minutes (or a little higher temp). I’d also try uncovering the last 5 minutes so it can brown without drying out.
