Irish Coffee

February 25, 2025

Irish coffee is a cozy and spirited beverage that blends hot coffee, smooth Irish whiskey, brown sugar, and a rich layer of cream. It’s the perfect drink for chilly evenings, festive gatherings, or whenever you want to elevate your coffee break with a touch of indulgence. Known for its warming effect and balanced flavors, Irish coffee is both a comforting treat and a timeless after-dinner favorite.

The drink dates back to the 1940s in Ireland, where it was first served to weary travelers at Foynes Port, an air terminal near Limerick. Chef Joe Sheridan famously added Irish whiskey to coffee to warm up passengers on a cold night, and the result was an instant hit. Its popularity spread internationally, especially after being introduced in San Francisco at the Buena Vista Café, which still serves its iconic version to this day.

The beauty of this coffee lies in its simplicity. The strong, freshly brewed coffee provides the foundation, while the whiskey adds warmth and depth. Brown sugar gives it a subtle sweetness that complements the bitter coffee, and the cream, lightly whipped but still pourable, floats on top, creating a smooth contrast in both texture and temperature.

The proper way to enjoy this special coffee is to sip it through the layer of cream without stirring. This way, each mouthful delivers the bold richness of the coffee and whiskey followed by the cool, silky cream. It’s a luxurious experience, despite requiring only a few ingredients.

Irish coffee is perfect for serving after a meal, during winter holidays, or as a cozy weekend treat. Whether made at home or ordered in a classic pub, this drink continues to be a beloved symbol of Irish hospitality, great aromatic taste, and flavor. And it’s easy to prepare homemade coffee with Irish cream at home.

I don’t get what all the fuss is about. This coffee just tasted like whiskey to me. Disappointing!

  2. 5 stars
Wow, this is so good. I added a dash of nutmeg on top and it was divine! 😍

This is the best Irish Coffee recipe I’ve tried! So smooth and creamy. Perfect for a chilly evening.

  4. 4 stars
Had no heavy cream so I used milk instead. Still turned out great, lol! Just a little less fancy I guess.

  5. 1 star
Why do people put cream on coffee anyway? Seems silly.

    1. User avatar donn.farrell says:

      2 stars
I don’t get it either. Coffee’s good on its own! Why mess it up with cream?

    2. User avatar Draugr Scourge says:

      5 stars
Cream adds a richness, man! It balances the bitter coffee. Try it before you knock it!

  6. 4 stars
Pretty solid. I preheated the mug like it says, and the drink stayed hot longer. Next time I’ll reduce the sugar a bit—mine was a tad sweet.

  7. 2 stars
Uh… coffee + whiskey + sugar is fine, but the cream thing feels a little gimmicky. I stirred mine and honestly it still tasted great, so idk why people insist on not stirring.

    1. 5 stars
Yeah I agree—cream-on-top is supposed to look fancy, not to be some sacred rule. I always stir a little and it tastes smooth anyway.

I tried this recipe, but my cream didn’t float. What’s wrong with me? 😩

I know how you feel! I once tried to make it and the cream sank too. It’s gotta be just right, I guess.

Don’t worry! It happens to the best of us. Maybe your cream was too thick? Just whip it less next time!

I didn’t have Irish whiskey so I used regular whiskey… honestly it wasn’t the same, but it was still good. Maybe add a pinch more sugar?

Nice drink. I like coffee and whiskey! Good mix.

  15. User avatar jaime.kuphal94 says:

Is it really necessary to preheat the glass? Seems like a lot of fuss for coffee.

  16. 4 stars
Um, can you use any coffee? I only have decaf at home. Will it still taste good?

  17. User avatar Dr. Irvin Borer says:

I skipped the sugar and it was still awesome! Gonna make this for St. Patrick’s Day.

This Irish Coffee is so good! I love how the cream sits on top. Perfect for a cold night.

    1. 5 stars
I totally agree! There’s nothing like that creaminess on a chilly evening. Irish coffee is the best! ☕️❤️

I thought this was gonna be way too sweet! Added less sugar and it was just right.

    1. 5 stars
I was worried about the sweetness too! Glad to see I’m not the only one who adjusted it. Definitely a keeper recipe!

  22. User avatar lakia.friesen26 says:

    3 stars
I followed the steps, but my cream sank right away 😩. Not sure if I over-whipped it or the coffee was too hot. Flavor still good though—would try again.

  23. User avatar audria.nader31 says:

    5 stars
This is the perfect way to start a Sunday morning! Love it!

  24. 2 stars
Irish coffee? I thought that was just coffee with a splash of whiskey. Guess I was wrong!

  25. User avatar allen.mckenzie65 says:

    2 stars
I used cold coffee by accident (was distracted) and it didn’t dissolve the sugar properly. Had little gritty bits. Moral: don’t multitask.

  26. User avatar eneida.franecki says:

    3 stars
I don’t like whiskey, can I use rum instead? Asking for a friend.

  27. 3 stars
I tried it but my cream sank immediately 😭. I whisked it “lightly” but maybe I made it too thin. Flavor still good though, just not the look.

    1. User avatar MAGA2024.Trumpster says:

      4 stars
Ahh no 😭 That usually happens when the cream isn’t thick enough or it’s poured too quickly. Next time try cream that’s barely holding soft peaks and pour it slowly right over the spoon like you did—also make sure the coffee isn’t too hot right at the surface.

  28. User avatar Mr. Granville Homenick says:

    4 stars
I used dark brown sugar and it came out a little thicker than I expected, but still tasted awesome. Next time I’ll whip the cream less.

  29. 3 stars
I’ve made versions before, but I’m confused: 1 oz heavy cream—shouldn’t it be half-and-half? Also, is Irish coffee supposed to be stirred? Mine looked cooler un-stirred.

    1. User avatar marlon.wisozk1984 says:

      5 stars
I think heavy cream is right—half-and-half won’t layer as nicely. Whip it *just a bit* so it floats like a cap.

  30. User avatar ArabianNights says:

    4 stars
Honestly it’s kinda fancy coffee with whiskey. Not mad at it. My dad would’ve called it “liquid dessert” and he’s not wrong.

    1. User avatar katelin.wiegand4 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—this *is* like liquid dessert 😄 The cream layer is the best part. I always go a little heavier on the sugar and it still works!

    2. User avatar elenor.flatley says:

      3 stars
I’ll be honest, I’m skeptical. Whiskey in coffee sounds great, but 3 oz coffee + 1 1/2 oz whiskey feels like a lot for me. Might try less whiskey next time.

  31. User avatar mariano.rau says:

    2 stars
I dunno, my whiskey was stronger than the coffee. Didn’t taste right to me. 🙁

  32. User avatar nguyet.glover99 says:

    5 stars
This is dangerously good. The cream layer stays nice if I go slow with the spoon. I used Jameson and it tastes like an actual bar version.

    1. User avatar bennett.von says:

      3 stars
I tried it once but my cream disappeared… I think I stirred it too much? Also I used regular whiskey and it was still decent, so maybe not super strict with Jameson.

    2. 5 stars
Dangerously good is right 😂 I also find going slow with the spoon makes all the difference—cream stays layered instead of melting in.

  33. User avatar abram.okeefe says:

    4 stars
Delicious! I used a different whiskey, and it turned out great. Will definitely make again. Cheers!

  34. User avatar chris.bosco66 says:

    2 stars
Jameson specifically? I get that it’s popular but why be picky—any whiskey should work, right? (I tried and it was fine.)

  35. User avatar Eddie the Computer says:

    4 stars
The instructions say “preheat a glass mug” but I don’t even have those fancy mugs—still made it in a regular glass and it was fine.

    1. User avatar Michael83 says:

      5 stars
Good to know! I was worried about the “glass mug” part—mine are just normal pint glasses. Glad it still works.

    2. User avatar anonymous_hacker says:

      4 stars
Wait… preheat with hot water is all? I always thought you needed like a whole special Irish mug or somethin 😅 I’m gonna try my regular glass tonight.

  36. User avatar louella.satterfield1966 says:

    3 stars
I’m skeptical about the “don’t stir” part. I stirred anyway (oops) and it was still tasty, just less fancy looking.

  37. User avatar renee.frami says:

Irish coffee, more like Irish trip to the bar… Where’s the party at? XD

  38. 5 stars
So easy to make, and I love how it warms you up! 😍🥃☕️

  39. User avatar magaret.langosh39 says:

    3 stars
I can’t believe this is basically coffee + alcohol + sugar + cream and people act like it’s gourmet. Still… I want one now lol.

  40. User avatar elvia.altenwerth says:

    4 stars
Coffee, whiskey, and heavy cream? Sounds unhealthy, but I can’t resist it!

  41. 5 stars
This Irish coffee is just perfect! The whiskey gives it such a nice kick. Totally my go-to now!

  42. User avatar liberal.hero says:

    2 stars
Just a drink with coffee and whiskey? Seems too simple. Not convinced yet.

  43. User avatar Super Saiyan Blue Vegeta says:

    4 stars
Could use more cream. Like, way more. Also, I think the cream should be cold not just lightly whipped? Not sure.

  44. User avatar tyrone.mraz61 says:

    5 stars
This is the best Irish coffee I’ve ever made! The cream on top is perfection.

  45. 2 stars
Irish coffee should have butter instead of cream!!! Just sayin’ 🤷‍♂️

  46. 5 stars
Yum! I used Baileys instead of whiskey because I had it on hand. Still tastes awesome!

  47. User avatar Shaddam Corrino IV says:

    4 stars
Delicious, but I had to tweak the sugar. 1 tbsp was a bit much for me, so I cut it down to 2 tsp. Still worked great and didn’t feel overly sweet.

  48. 3 stars
Uhm, I don’t get why you don’t just stir it. Seems pointless to drink it through the cream, right?

  49. User avatar dale.herzog says:

    2 stars
Tried this and it was too strong for me. I think I added too much whiskey or something. It wasn’t what I expected!

  50. User avatar laurence.hackett1970 says:

    5 stars
Tried this tonight—so good. The cream layer is a vibe. I used Jameson and it tasted exactly like a cozy pub on a rainy day.

    1. User avatar renaldo.bayer says:

      3 stars
I tried it but my cream sank 😩. I think I made it too thick—next time I’ll keep it lighter. Still tasted good though!

    2. User avatar lucinda.skiles says:

      5 stars
Yes! That cream layer is the whole magic trick. I’ve started doing the “back of a spoon” thing and it makes all the difference.

  51. 5 stars
The instructions say pour cream over the back of a spoon—works for me every time. I get that nice layer. I’m not sure why people struggle with it unless they’re pouring too fast.

  52. User avatar randa.mueller46 says:

    4 stars
Only 3 oz coffee? Seems small. I made two drinks worth and it was perfect, but the one mug version didn’t feel like enough for me. Still, the taste is strong.

  53. 5 stars
This is exactly how my dad makes it—sweet, smooth, and the cream floats perfectly if you go slow with the spoon. Great classic.

  54. 3 stars
Cream on top is tricky. If you stir it by accident, it kinda turns into a cafe latte situation, not a “layered” drink.

  55. User avatar jone.kreiger85 says:

    5 stars
I tried measuring 3 oz and 1 1/2 oz exactly and it tasted balanced. The instructions are clear, not gonna lie.

  56. User avatar Winona Bechtelar says:

    4 stars
The preheat step is clutch. My first try I skipped it and the whole thing cooled way too fast.

  57. User avatar Arthur Dent says:

    2 stars
My cream never floats—every time it sinks. I might be whipping it too much or pouring too fast. Any tips? 😅

    1. 4 stars
Pouring too fast is definitely it. I always go like, glacier slow… and make sure the cream is thicker than milk but not stiff. If you overwhip, it can break and sink weirdly. 😅

    2. 5 stars
Hmm if it sinks, it’s usually either not whipped enough or the cream is too warm / coffee too hot. Try “lightly whipped” (soft peaks or even just thickened), then pour it slowly over the spoon so the cream stays cooler on top. Also don’t stir after adding.

  58. User avatar heather.oconnell11 says:

    5 stars
This is basically dessert coffee with booze lol. Wife loved it, I felt a little adult for the night.

  59. 1 star
Irish coffee??? I thought it was just coffee with cream. This recipe is too specific. 3 oz coffee? Why not like, a normal cup.

    1. User avatar jason.kuvalis says:

      4 stars
Yeah, it *sounds* like it should be just coffee + cream, but the whiskey and the sugar balance it out. The “3 oz” is basically a proper single-serving pour for the glass mug—more like a short drink than a whole mug. Try it with a normal cup if you want, just scale the whiskey and sugar too.

  60. User avatar berniece.weimann says:

    5 stars
Tried this for St. Patrick’s Day and it turned out super smooth. The cream layer is key—mine stayed intact for a few minutes before mixing in. I used Jameson and it tasted exactly like an Irish cafe drink should.

    1. User avatar dale.mccullough46 says:

      5 stars
St. Patrick’s Day win! The cream layer thing is so true—if it mixes too fast it’s not the same drink.

  61. User avatar Tricia McMillan says:

    4 stars
Mine turned a little muddy, I probably poured the cream too fast. Next time I’ll go slower and use more lightly whipped cream.

    1. User avatar herb.luettgen75 says:

      5 stars
That makes sense—if the cream goes in too fast it kind of breaks and mixes, giving it that muddy look. Slower pour + a lighter whip should fix it.

  62. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

    3 stars
You can skip the preheating step if you’re in a rush. I did it once and the drink cooled fast, but it still tasted fine. Maybe not the best texture though.

  63. User avatar suspiciousCommentator says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, I think 1 tbsp brown sugar is too sweet. I cut it down to like 2 teaspoons and it was perfect.

  64. 2 stars
Heavy cream? Can’t I just use milk. Also why Irish whiskey, not just regular bourbon? (Yes I know, I’m being difficult.)

    1. 4 stars
Honestly I think you *can* use milk—just warm it and maybe whisk it a bit—but yeah, it won’t be the classic texture. The Irish whiskey is for a smoother, slightly sweeter profile than typical bourbon.

    2. 4 stars
Milk will work in a pinch, but heavy cream is what gives that thick, float-y layer. With milk it’ll just mix in and you’ll lose the “sipped through the cream” vibe.
