Homemade Potato Chips

January 30, 2025

Homemade potato chips are one of those snacks that feel extra rewarding to make yourself. There’s something satisfying about taking a humble potato and transforming it into crisp, golden chips with just a few ingredients. Whether you like them lightly salted, boldly seasoned, or paired with your favorite dip, homemade chips offer freshness and flavor that packaged versions just can’t match.

The appeal of making your own chips goes beyond taste — it’s about control. You get to choose the type of potato, the thickness of each slice, the oil used for frying or baking, and exactly how much salt or seasoning to add. Yukon Golds or Russets are the go-to choices, thanks to their texture and flavor, but even sweet potatoes or purple varieties can be turned into something special. Using a mandoline or sharp knife ensures thin, even slices, which is key for getting that perfect crunch.

One of the biggest surprises for first-time chip makers is just how easy it is. With a pot of hot oil or a preheated oven, a batch can go from raw slices to crispy chips in a matter of minutes. The key is keeping an eye on the color — once they turn golden brown and the edges curl, they’re ready. Let them drain on paper towels, season immediately, and enjoy.

Homemade potato chips are also incredibly versatile. A light sprinkle of sea salt may be all you need, but you can easily get creative. Try flavors like garlic parmesan, smoky paprika, BBQ seasoning, or even a touch of vinegar for that tangy bite. Serve them alongside burgers, sandwiches, or just enjoy them on their own with a cold drink.

Crispy, warm, and deeply satisfying, homemade potato chips remind us that the best snacks are often the simplest. With just a few ingredients and a little time, you can have a bowl of chips that are leagues above anything in a bag.

Chips! Chips! Chips! Best snack ever!

  4. User avatar bethann.macejkovic says:

I followed the instructions but my chips burnt. Maybe my oil was too hot?

    1. User avatar sari.lind38 says:

      3 stars
Should’ve watched them more closely. Chips can burn quick! Did you soak them long enough?

    2. User avatar jonathon.hudson says:

      4 stars
Yeah, that’s probably it! 350°F is key. Maybe try a thermometer next time?

  5. 2 stars
I don’t get it, why soak them in water? Seems like a waste of time to me.

    1. User avatar camille.hagenes says:

      2 stars
Nah, seems pointless. I’ve made chips before without soaking and they turned out fine. Just fry ’em up!

    2. User avatar leandra.kuhlman says:

      5 stars
Soaking helps to make them crispier! It removes the starch that can make them soggy. Trust me, it’s worth it!

  6. User avatar ty.koelpin80 says:

    5 stars
These are the best chips I’ve ever made! So crispy and delicious. Thanks for the recipe!

  7. 3 stars
Did you really need 2 cups of oil? Seems excessive.

    1. 3 stars
Yeah, that does seem like a lot. I usually use less than that for frying. Are they super greasy with all that oil?

  8. User avatar everette.botsford11 says:

    4 stars
I skipped the soaking step once and I could tell right away—more starch, less crunch. So yeah, step 2 actually matters.

    1. User avatar oliver.graham says:

      4 stars
I don’t always soak… but I also dry them a lot. Still, this makes sense. If I skip the soak, they end up kinda gummy.

    2. User avatar Gail Andrews says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—soaking is one of those “small” steps that makes a huge difference. Less starch = better crisp for sure.

  9. User avatar Emanuel Quigley says:

    4 stars
Really good recipe! I added some cayenne pepper for a spicy kick and they turned out perfect! Yum!

  10. User avatar Otto Trantow I says:

I have a hard time believing these are better than store-bought. Aren’t they just gonna taste like greasy potatoes?

  11. User avatar carolynn.ankunding says:

    2 stars
Hmmm, not what I expected. They burnt too quickly. ;(

    1. 4 stars
Sorry to hear that! Maybe try lowering the heat next time? That might help prevent burning.

  12. User avatar andre.tremblay23 says:

    4 stars
Really? You don’t need to soak them for that long. I skip that part and they still taste good.

  13. User avatar King Vegeta says:

    4 stars
    Potato chips????? Yummy! 😋

  14. User avatar kasey.connelly92 says:

Potato chips? More like potato flops! Mine burnt instantly. Thumbs down from me. 👎

    1. User avatar abel.hayes1982 says:

      4 stars
I had the same issue! I think my oil was too hot. Gotta keep an eye on that temp!

    2. 3 stars
Maybe you sliced them too thin? I usually make mine thicker so they don’t burn.

  15. User avatar annamae.mclaughlin80 says:

  28. User avatar roy.kulas says:

  29. 4 stars
So easy and yum! Never thought I could make my own chips. Thanks!

I’m glad you enjoyed it! There’s nothing like home-cooked snacks. Did you try any other seasonings?

    2. User avatar rich.landlord says:

      3 stars
But chips can be unhealthy! We should eat them in moderation. My mom never let me eat them too often.

  34. 2 stars
I followed the recipe, but my chips came out soggy. What did I do wrong?

    1. User avatar calista.schaden says:

      4 stars
Maybe the oil wasn’t hot enough? That could make them soggy. Try heating it more next time!

  35. User avatar paulita.wolff68 says:

    3 stars
I tried it, but my chips turned out soggy after cooling. I think my oil wasn’t hot enough and I might’ve skipped drying them well.

  36. User avatar w00d_ch0p says:

    3 stars
They were too oily for my taste, next time I’ll try baking them.

My kids loved these! Way better than store bought. Will make again!!

    1. User avatar sirena.gottlieb1968 says:

      5 stars
Idk, my chips turned out great! You might just need to practice more. Just fry them right after soaking, that should help!

    2. User avatar fred.shanahan says:

      4 stars
Sounds like maybe you soaked them too long, or didn’t dry them enough before frying. Next time, try soaking for just 20 minutes and make sure to really blot them dry. They should turn out better!

  39. User avatar ernest.stoltenberg2 says:

    5 stars
These chips are so easy to make! My kids loved helping slice the potatoes. 😄

  40. 4 stars
Not gonna lie, I was skeptical about soaking for only 30 minutes, but it worked. Also, patting them dry is key. Great crunch!

    1. User avatar Leto Atreides says:

      5 stars
I was skeptical too—30 minutes sounds too short—but I tried it once and totally agree, patting them dry makes a huge difference. That crunch is real!

  41. User avatar Dennis Corkery says:

    3 stars
Sounds good, but frying seems like too much work for some chips. Can’t you just bake them?

  42. 3 stars
I tried making these, but they burnt too quick. Any tips?

    2. User avatar Courtney Fahey says:

      2 stars
I dunno, isn’t frying like super unhealthy? Maybe just bake ’em instead? 🤔

  51. User avatar cammy.russel1951 says:

    3 stars
Maybe if I had a fryer. Do you think I could bake them instead??

  52. User avatar terminatorXYZ says:

    1 star
This is just some potatoes and oil. I can’t believe people need a recipe for this. What next? Boiling water? 😆

  53. 5 stars
These turned out way better than I expected. The soaking step really helps, and the 350°F temp was spot on. Crispy for days!

    1. User avatar CTRLplusW says:

      3 stars
Huh, I tried once but mine went soggy after like an hour. Maybe I didn’t soak long enough or my oil temp was off. 350F is definitely the key?

    2. User avatar cecilia.hill0 says:

      5 stars
Love hearing that! I always forget to pat them super dry—makes sense the soaking helps too. Crispy for days sounds perfect.

  54. User avatar Sand-Dial says:

    4 stars
Super easy! My kids loved helping with the slicing!

  55. User avatar clay.streich84 says:

  56. User avatar gayle.renner92 says:

    2 stars
Potatoes are good for you? I thought you shouldn’t eat carbs.

  57. User avatar maryrose.emard says:

Just made these for game night. They were all gone in 10 mins! 🍟

  58. User avatar jeanice.lueilwitz6 says:

    3 stars
I don’t get why you’d soak ’em. Is that really necessary? My mom just slices and fries.

    1. 2 stars
I doubt it makes that much difference. Just slice and fry, like your mom says.

    2. User avatar willian.effertz57 says:

      4 stars
Soaking helps make them crispier! I always do it and love the results. Your mom’s method may work too, but give it a shot!

  59. User avatar barbar.little says:

    5 stars
Yum! Just what I was craving. Can’t believe I made these myself! 🥔✨

    1. 5 stars
That’s awesome! Homemade chips are the best! I’m glad you enjoyed them! 🥳

    2. User avatar lucius.mayert says:

      3 stars
I tried this recipe too, but my chips turned out soggy. What did I do wrong? 🤔

  60. User avatar Bilbo Baggins says:

    4 stars
I think I put too much salt. Oops! Still crunchy tho.

  61. User avatar jake.upton85 says:

    3 stars
I don’t kno if these are healthier than the ones in the bag. Fried potato slices sound kinda fatty to me.

    1. User avatar cassaundra.stamm1 says:

      4 stars
I understand your concern! But you can control the oil and salt used here. 😊

  62. User avatar Falmer Warmonger says:

    1 star
Potato chips should be store-bought. Homemade is too much work for just chips.

  63. User avatar garland.luettgen98 says:

    4 stars
The mandoline step is key, but also dangerous if you’re not careful 😅. Chips were crunchy though!

  64. User avatar platypus says:

    1 star
Why not just buy them at the store? I don’t get why people make them.

    1. User avatar barrett.harber7 says:

      2 stars
Who has time for that? Just buy a bag and save the hassle. Seems like too much work for chips.

    2. User avatar clayton.rath49 says:

      5 stars
Making them at home is way better! You can control the salt and oil, plus it’s fun to fry them yourself. Store-bought can’t compare!

  65. 1 star
I think I used too much oil. Made a mess. 🥴

    1. User avatar berry.smitham says:

      4 stars
Don’t worry, it happens to the best of us! Just be careful with the oil next time. Maybe use less and add more gradually? 🎉

    2. User avatar dina.wolf82 says:

      3 stars
Too much oil? Maybe try an air fryer next time? That’s what I do. Less mess for sure!

  66. User avatar kip.glover48 says:

    5 stars
lol homemade chips are worth it. Crispy!

  67. 1 star
Overrated. Too much oil for chips that are just potatoes. I could just buy a bag. (No offense.)

    1. User avatar jimmie.moore63 says:

      4 stars
Fair point on the oil—homemade chips aren’t “light” at all. But the homemade part is the control: thickness, crispness, and you can season them exactly how you like. Still, if you just want quick chips, a bag wins.

  68. User avatar CTRLplusW says:

    5 stars
These were so easy to make! They turned out perfect, crispy and delicious. Will definitely make again.

  69. User avatar Falmer Spellsword says:

    5 stars
Wow! Made these for the big game and they were a hit! Everyone loved them! Thanks for the recipe! 😀

  70. User avatar olene.reynolds56 says:

    1 star
Frying them in oil – sooo unhealthy! Why not bake them?

    1. 4 stars
Baking them just doesn’t give the same crunch! Frying is part of the fun. 😊

    2. 3 stars
But frying makes them taste better! Who cares about calories? Live a little! 🍟
