Homemade Hummus

April 3, 2024

Homemade hummus is a game-changer. It’s smooth, creamy, and bursting with flavor – much better than store-bought versions. Plus, it’s incredibly easy to make with just a few simple ingredients that you likely already have in your pantry. Whether you’re using it as a dip for fresh veggies, spreading it on sandwiches, or enjoying it with pita, this homemade hummus is guaranteed to be a crowd-pleaser.

To make homemade hummus, you’ll need chickpeas (either canned or cooked from scratch), tahini (sesame seed paste), olive oil, garlic, lemon juice, and a pinch of salt. Begin by blending the chickpeas and tahini in a food processor until smooth. Adding a little water or extra olive oil helps achieve that silky texture we all love in hummus.

For the perfect balance of flavors, squeeze in fresh lemon juice for brightness and add garlic to taste for that aromatic bite. Season with salt and a dash of ground cumin, if desired, to enhance the depth of flavor. Blend again, and taste to adjust the seasoning if necessary. You can also add a little more olive oil or water to reach your desired consistency, some like their hummus thicker, while others prefer it a bit creamier.

One of the secrets to ultra-smooth hummus is peeling the skins off the chickpeas before blending, though this is optional if you’re short on time. It may take a bit longer, but the result is a silky-smooth dip.

Once blended, serve your homemade hummus in a bowl, drizzle with extra olive oil, and sprinkle with paprika or fresh parsley for color. You can pair it with fresh veggies like cucumber, carrots, and bell peppers, or serve it alongside warm pita bread, crackers, or even roasted meats for a complete meal.

Homemade hummus is not only versatile and delicious but also healthy and packed with protein and fiber. Once you try it, you’ll wonder why you ever bought it from the store!

Hummus is not supposed to have tahini! That ingredient is for salad dressings, right? 🤔

So simple! I didn’t have cumin so I used cinnamon and still sooo good

Made this tonight—so smooth. I added a splash more lemon and it tasted super fresh. The cumin is spot on.

    1. 5 stars
Love hearing this! The extra lemon makes total sense—hummus is so much brighter that way. Glad the cumin worked for you too 🙂

  17. User avatar Barry Manilow says:

Hummus is alright, but I prefer store-bought. This just took too long for me. 😩

  18. User avatar jere.dietrich says:

This is the best hummus I’ve had at home! I added a pinch more cumin and smoked paprika on top. So good with warm pita.

Can you use lemon zest instead of juice? I dont have lemons right now.

  21. User avatar wes.gislason2 says:

1 can chickpeas?! That’s too easy—does it really taste right? I tried and it was honestly… meh. Needs way more seasoning in my opinion.

    1. User avatar rich.landlord says:

      3 stars
meh? wow. I mean… maybe you didn’t add enough salt. Also tahini brands vary a lot—some are kinda bitter so you gotta compensate with lemon. Water helps too but don’t drown it. Try paprika on top like the recipe says.

    2. User avatar royce.jerde26 says:

      4 stars
Yes! It can taste “too easy” at first 😅 but usually it’s the lemon/garlic/tahini balance. I’d add more cumin and a pinch of salt, and definitely enough tahini—also blend longer for that smooth, restaurant vibe.

  22. User avatar Arwen Evenstar says:

    5 stars
My kids loved it, but they call it ‘monster dip’! 😂

    1. User avatar vania.purdy says:

      5 stars
Haha, that’s so cute! Monster dip sounds way more fun than hummus! 😄 My kids loved it too!

  23. 5 stars
OMG I ate it all! Will def make again! 😊

  24. User avatar Ka'o Muakagh says:

    5 stars
I’m not usually a hummus person but this recipe made me try. I used extra cumin and it tasted really flavorful. Will make again for sure.

  25. User avatar Mr. Beatrice Labadie says:

    5 stars
This hummus recipe is super easy! I loved it! Yum yum!

  26. User avatar sabra.moore says:

    2 stars
Olive oil amount feels off? I used 1/4 cup and it got a little too heavy. Flavor was okay though.

  27. User avatar genaro.trantow1985 says:

    2 stars
I think 3 tbsp lemon juice is way too much. Mine came out kinda sharp, like I accidentally made lemon sauce. Will reduce next time.

    1. User avatar terminatorXYZ says:

      5 stars
Totally get that—lemon can overpower hummus fast. I’d start with 1–2 tbsp and add more gradually next time.

  28. User avatar elizbeth.murazik2001 says:

    4 stars
Homemade hummus is always better than store-bought! You just need a blender, right? 😄

  29. 2 stars
Garlic is strong in this—like, too strong for me. Next time I’ll use 1 clove or roast it first. Otherwise the texture was nice.

  30. User avatar elijah.jacobs63 says:

    2 stars
I don’t get why people love hummus so much. This is just blended chickpeas. Not impressed.

    1. 4 stars
But hummus is so versatile! You can add all kinds of flavors to it. It’s not just plain chickpeas!

    2. 3 stars
I dunno, it’s kinda tasty with pita chips tho. Maybe you just haven’t found the right recipe?

  31. User avatar kallie.lowe1994 says:

    5 stars
Honestly 10/10. This is better than store-bought. Like for real—super smooth after blending.

    1. User avatar sarina.hodkiewicz74 says:

      3 stars
Smooth is nice, but does it really stay thick? I tried once and it tasted kinda garlicy and bitter, maybe I used too much lemon? Still, I’ll give it another go.

    2. User avatar Feral Falmer says:

      5 stars
Yes!! I made this and it came out super silky—way better than store hummus. The tahini + lemon combo is perfect 👌

  32. 4 stars
The instructions are simple, which I like. However, 1 can chickpeas can vary in size and I think I needed a bit more lemon juice than listed.

  33. User avatar jena.halvorson22 says:

    4 stars
Mine got a little thick, but adding water little by little fixed it. Also I didn’t have paprika, so I just used smoked paprika and it worked great.

  34. 5 stars
This recipe is legit. I made it for a party, and everyone went crazy for it!

  35. 4 stars
I love making hummus at home! This recipe is a keeper. Can’t wait to share it!

    1. User avatar carl.rogahn says:

      5 stars
I totally agree! Hummus from scratch is the best. Much better than store bought!

    2. User avatar laquanda.hickle says:

      3 stars
But how can you be sure it’s gonna taste good? I mean, what if you mess up the ratios?

  36. 5 stars
Made this today and it turned out super creamy. I added a splash more water and a pinch of extra salt—perfect texture with the lemony tang. Definitely saving this as my go-to hummus.

    1. User avatar Irma Lueilwitz says:

      5 stars
So glad you nailed the creaminess! That little splash of water makes a big difference, especially for getting it perfectly smooth. Thanks for sharing!

    2. 4 stars
Interesting—mine always comes out kinda thick unless I use way more lemon. But I’ll try your method with the extra water next time. Appreciate it.

  37. User avatar stephani.hills88 says:

    2 stars
Why is there tahini in hummus? It’s just blended chickpeas, right?

  38. 5 stars
I made this for my party, and it disappeared fast! Everyone loved it! 😍

  39. User avatar caleb.moore5 says:

    4 stars
Garbanzo beans work too, right? Because I used those instead and it turned out amazing. Kids even ate it lol.

    1. User avatar nick.okon91 says:

      5 stars
Yep—garbanzo beans are basically chickpeas, just a different name. Glad it turned out amazing! 😊

  40. User avatar Carlton Luettgen says:

    1 star
    What’s hummus?? I thought it was a cake. LOL. I guess I won’t be trying this. 😂

  41. 1 star
Honestly I don’t think tahini is worth it. I used less and it still tasted kinda right, but not amazing. Might be me though.

  42. User avatar hollie.fisher81 says:

    3 stars
This is the first time I made hummus. It’s okay, a bit bland. I think I need more salt or something.

    1. User avatar darci.turner27 says:

      4 stars
Totally get that! Sometimes a little more salt can make a huge difference. You could also try adding some spices like paprika or cayenne for more flavor! 😊

    2. User avatar Draugr Death Overlord says:

      3 stars
Hummus is often bland because you gotta season it just right, but it’s a great base for adding whatever flavors you like! Don’t give up!

  43. 3 stars
Yummy but i miss the original flavors from the shop. Whatever!

  44. User avatar Arthur Philip Deodat says:

    3 stars
Nice recipe but my food processor is a small one. So hard to mix it all!

    1. 4 stars
You could try blending in smaller batches! Just don’t forget to mix it all well at the end.

  45. User avatar rocco.cremin1998 says:

    5 stars
So good! I added a little extra lemon and it tasted super fresh. The texture was creamy even without rushing the blending.

  46. 1 star
Idk hummus is overrated. Also I don’t have a food processor so I just mashed it… it was a disaster, lol.

  47. User avatar eufemia.wiza95 says:

    5 stars
YUMMY! So easy! Love it with carrots. Will make it again! 👍

  48. User avatar emilie.anderson24 says:

    3 stars
I tried making this but it ended up too watery, any tips?

  49. 1 star
Why does everyone keep raving about hummus? It’s just blended beans…

  50. User avatar emmitt.batz says:

    5 stars
So creamy and actually tastes like the hummus from my favorite spot. I added a splash more lemon at the end—perfect.

  51. User avatar Shadout Mapes says:

    4 stars
I’ve tried many hummus recipes, and this one is definitely one of my favorites! Thanks for sharing!

  52. User avatar beverly.hammes80 says:

    3 stars
It tasted great but mine was a little thick. I probably didn’t add enough water while blending. Next time I’ll adjust sooner instead of waiting until after it’s done.

  53. User avatar Ms. Walker Little says:

    4 stars
I added some red pepper flakes to mine and it was amazing! Spicy but good.

    1. 5 stars
I love a little heat in my hummus! Great idea with the red pepper flakes!

    2. User avatar jeramy.fay says:

      2 stars
Spicy hummus? Not sure about that. Hummus should be smooth and mild, right?

  54. User avatar Minerva Kreiger says:

    3 stars
I followed the recipe but my hummus came out too thick. What did I do wrong?

  55. User avatar charolette.ward says:

    5 stars
Tahini is expensive where I live so I was unsure, but wow. I will make this again. Also paprika on top is genius.

  56. 4 stars
Not a fan of tahini, so I omitted it. It turned out ok, but if you love tahini, go for it!

    1. User avatar derick.lebsack says:

      2 stars
Why would you even make hummus without tahini? That’s like making pizza without cheese! 🤔

    2. User avatar wellRespected says:

      4 stars
I hear you! I don’t like tahini either but I think you could add more lemon for extra zing.

  57. User avatar tera.bosco2026 says:

    3 stars
Why do you need tahini? Wasting money on fancy stuff. Just use peanut butter!

    1. User avatar aron.wisoky15 says:

      3 stars
But peanut butter is totally diff… doesn’t taste the same! I tried it once and the hummus was all wrong! 🤷‍♂️

    2. User avatar Princess Zelda says:

      5 stars
Tahini gives hummus that authentic taste! It’s not just fancy, it’s essential for the flavor. You really should try it! 😊

  58. User avatar sheldon.buckridge says:

    4 stars
Not bad, but I prefer my own blend. It’s more unique than this. Just sayin’.

    1. 2 stars
Unique? How can it be better than the classic hummus? You gotta respect the basics, man.

    2. 4 stars
Everyone’s got their own taste! Your blend must be special. Care to share your secret ingredients?

  59. User avatar melanie.ledner says:

    3 stars
I don’t like cumin, can I leave it out? What’s the point? 🤔

    1. User avatar suspiciousCommentator says:

      5 stars
You can definitely leave out the cumin if you don’t like it! It just adds a bit of flavor, but it’s not essential. Hummus will still be great without it! 😊

    2. User avatar liberal.hero says:

      2 stars
Leaving out cumin? That’s like making pizza without cheese! But yeah, do what you want. 😜

  60. 4 stars
I’m not usually a hummus person, but this was easy and actually turned out flavorful. Garlic definitely helps.

  61. User avatar chia.christiansen62 says:

    3 stars
Putting garlic in hummus? That’s original, lol. Everyone does that! Whatever, it’s decent. 3/5.

  62. 4 stars
Pretty good and super easy. I don’t have a food processor so I smashed the chickpeas with a potato masher, and it was still decent—just not as smooth.

  63. User avatar joette.casper26 says:

    2 stars
Like hummus, but what’s tahini? Can I use peanut butter instead? 🤔

  64. User avatar Frost Troll says:

    4 stars
Garlic in any dip is a must! But I think 2 cloves is too much…

  65. 3 stars
Tried to make it but it came out too thick. What did I do wrong? Maybe too much tahini? 🤔

    1. User avatar oPandariaNo says:

      4 stars
I think it might be the tahini, yeah. Try less next time or add more water to balance it out. Good luck! 😊

    2. User avatar roman.kessler37 says:

      3 stars
Thick? Nah, just add more water while blending! Easy fix! Hummus is supposed to be smooth.

  66. 5 stars
This is the best hummus recipe I’ve ever tried! So creamy and full of flavor. Will make it again for my family. 👍

    1. User avatar Ra'zhinda says:

      5 stars
I totally agree! This hummus is fantastic! It’s now my go-to snack. 😊

  67. User avatar Karliah says:

    2 stars
Ugh, this was too garlicky for me. Should’ve just used one clove.

    1. User avatar korey.von1956 says:

      2 stars
No way! Garlic is the best part. Just use less if you don’t like it. Simple!

    2. User avatar Lunkwill and Fook says:

      4 stars
I actually love garlic, so I guess it’s a personal preference! But I see your point. Next time, maybe try adding it gradually?

  68. User avatar clark.kilback says:

    5 stars
Yum! My kids loved this hummus. We dipped everything in it. Will try with more cumin next time!

  69. User avatar dottie.abernathy says:

    5 stars
5 stars just because it’s hummus and hummus is life. Also the paprika drizzle makes it look fancy for zero effort.

  70. User avatar malcom.vonrueden says:

    4 stars
Pretty good, but I had to add more water than the recipe suggested to get it creamy. Still way better than store-bought.
