Grilled Steak Salad

August 20, 2024

Grilled steak salad is the kind of meal that proves salads don’t have to be boring. It’s hearty, satisfying, and full of contrast, crisp greens meet juicy, charred steak, and fresh vegetables play against rich, savory flavors. Whether you’re looking for a lighter take on steak night or a protein-packed lunch, this dish delivers on both flavor and balance.

The star of the show is, of course, the steak. Whether you go with a ribeye, flank, or sirloin, grilling brings out its natural depth and adds a smoky edge that pairs beautifully with the freshness of the salad. A simple seasoning is often all it needs. Once grilled to your preferred doneness, the steak is sliced thinly so every bite feels tender and easy to eat alongside the greens.

What goes into the salad can vary based on your mood or what’s in the fridge, but the basics usually include mixed greens, cherry tomatoes, red onions, and perhaps some cucumber or avocado for added texture and creaminess. Crumbled blue cheese or feta can bring a sharp, tangy element, while toasted nuts or crispy shallots add crunch.

The dressing is where you tie it all together. A balsamic vinaigrette works beautifully with grilled steak, offering acidity that cuts through the richness. If you’re feeling bold, a creamy horseradish or garlic yogurt dressing can bring a punch of flavor that complements the charred meat.

This salad is as good for entertaining as it is for a casual dinner. It feels elevated, yet it’s simple to prepare. Grill the steak, toss the salad, and in less than 30 minutes, you’ve got a dish that looks and tastes like it took much more effort.

Grilled steak salad hits that perfect middle ground. It’s indulgent without being heavy, fresh but still comforting. And perhaps best of all, it’s endlessly customizable, making it a go-to no matter the season or occasion.

I thought it would be better. The steak was chewy and the dressing didn’t do much for me.

    1. 4 stars
I get what you mean! Sometimes the meat can be tough if it’s not cooked just right. What kind of doneness did you go for?

    2. User avatar nelson.tremblay says:

      3 stars
Chewy steak?! Yikes! Did you let it rest after grilling? That helps a lot! The dressing sounds fine to me tho.

  2. 3 stars
Grilling the steak was easy! But what’s with the fancy greens? Just use lettuce!

  3. 4 stars
I made it without feta because I’m out, and honestly it still worked. Maybe less salty, but the greens and steak carried it.

  4. User avatar renato.waters1987 says:

    3 stars
Why do you use balsamic? I think a ranch dressing is more suitable for steak salad.

  5. User avatar Jamal Beer Jr. says:

Too much salad, not enough steak. Next time I’ll just get a burger instead.

Salad. Good. Steak. Good. Me like.

  7. User avatar stacey.jacobson says:

Meh, I prefer my steak with just salt. Didn’t like all those veggies.

    1. User avatar manuel.effertz1973 says:

      4 stars
I get that! Sometimes simple is best. But the veggies add a nice crunch! Maybe try it without next time.

    2. 3 stars
Salt’s all ya need? I dunno… veggies bring flavor too. But hey, to each their own, right?

  8. User avatar Falmer Warmonger says:

i dont have dijon so i used regular mustard… tasted kinda tangy but still fine. grilled steak flavor carried the whole thing. might try with proper dijon next time

  9. 5 stars
Yum! Best dinner I’ve had in ages. I substituted feta for blue cheese, and it was outta this world!

    1. User avatar sybil.trantow61 says:

Glad to hear you liked it! Feta is a great choice. How do you think blue cheese would compare? I’ve never tried it.

This steak salad is AMAZING! The ribeye made it so tender and juicy. My family loved it!

    1. User avatar delbert.ziemann1985 says:

I totally agree! Ribeye definitely takes it to the next level. My family loves it too!

I’m not a feta person, so I swapped goat cheese. It worked great. Also, thinly slicing the steak makes it easier to eat with the greens.

YUM! I didn’t have balsamic vinegar, so I used apple cider instead. Still turned out fantastic! Will make again for sure!

    1. 4 stars
Using apple cider instead of balsamic? That’s interesting! I never thought of that. Glad it worked out for you!

    2. 3 stars
Idk, are you sure the apple cider is as good? Balsamic is really special… But I’m happy it turned out for you.

  18. User avatar chi.ohara61 says:

Steak salad? Sounds gross, just eat a steak by itself! Who needs salad? 😂

  19. User avatar arron.herman80 says:

    4 stars
Not a fan of feta, swapped it for cheddar. Still good!

  20. User avatar harrison.gerlach says:

I used sirloin and it turned out a bit chewy for me, maybe I overcooked it. Salad was still great though—super crunchy.

  21. User avatar marylynn.schamberger1983 says:

Why do you need balsamico? Just dress it with ketchup, it’s delicious!

  22. 5 stars
This was delicious! The steak was perfectly grilled and my family loved it.

Made this for dinner last night—super fresh and the balsamic-Dijon combo is legit. Steak was juicy after resting 5 minutes like the recipe said. Would definitely do again.

    1. User avatar ada.johnston43 says:

      4 stars
Nice! I’m kinda surprised it’s only 3-5 min each side though—mine always takes longer on a hot grill. But if it was juicy then I guess I’ll trust it. 😅

    2. User avatar barbar.kirlin21 says:

      5 stars
Yes!! That balsamic-Dijon is such a good hit with steak. Glad you rested it too—5 min really does make a difference.

  24. 5 stars
Yummm! Crumbled feta on top was the best part. Will make again!

  25. 5 stars
Steak, greens, feta? Sounds like a fancy dish but super easy to make! Love it!

  26. 5 stars
This salad was absolutely amazing! The steak was so tender and flavorful. I’ll definitely make this again!

  27. User avatar saul.buckridge66 says:

This salad is bomb! I added avocado and it was even better! Gonna share this with my friends.

    1. 5 stars
Avocado in a salad? That’s a game changer! Definitely gonna try it! 🥑

    2. 2 stars
I dunno… Seems like adding too much stuff to a salad might ruin it. Stick to the basics!

  28. User avatar tommie.mraz69 says:

    3 stars
Anyone else think the dressing was too tangy? I had to put a lot more olive oil in, ruin the recipe!

  29. User avatar retha.fadel says:

    5 stars
Yum! Easy and tasty! Just wish I had more feta. 🤤

    1. User avatar scot.buckridge74 says:

      3 stars
Looks good, but couldn’t you just use any cheese? Feta is too salty sometimes.

    2. User avatar joaquin.rau46 says:

      5 stars
More feta would have made it even better! Love this recipe!

  30. 1 star
Salad? This is a meat platter! No thanks. Give me more greens!

  31. User avatar Arwen Evenstar says:

    4 stars
Yum!!! Perfect for summer! I added some avocado and it was so good!

    1. 5 stars
Sounds amazing! Avocado is a great addition. I’ll definitely try that next time!

    2. User avatar agustin.wolf says:

      2 stars
Uh, isn’t steak kinda heavy for summer? I prefer lighter salads.

  32. User avatar zoraida.gleason says:

    2 stars
I don’t think this is a salad at all. Where are the toppings? And honestly, 3 minutes for a steak? I like mine well-done!

  33. User avatar Draugr Thrall says:

    4 stars
I tried something like this but my steak came out a bit tough. Not sure if I overcooked it or didn’t slice against the grain. Still, the fresh veggies + feta balance it nicely.

  34. User avatar fletcher.medhurst56 says:

    3 stars
I don’t like mustard, can I just leave it out? Also, why not use ranch dressing instead?

  35. 2 stars
Seems a bit fancy for just a salad, not sure I want to grill steak for it. Tried a normal salad instead, it was fine.

    1. User avatar Ford Prefect says:

      4 stars
I get what you mean! Sometimes, simple is best. A regular salad can still be tasty without grilling steak. Not everyone has time for fancy dishes.

  36. User avatar ferdinand.heaney83 says:

    4 stars
The ingredient list is solid, but I wish the instructions mentioned how thick the steak should be. Mine was thicker and I had to go longer.

  37. User avatar lanny.jacobs2006 says:

    1 star
Didn’t like it. Taste was off. Meat too chewy!

    1. 4 stars
I’m sorry to hear that! Maybe the steak was overcooked? It can get tough if it’s grilled too long. Just a thought!

  38. User avatar Frost Troll says:

    5 stars
The feta amount is kinda vague “if desired.” I used more and now it’s basically my whole personality 😂

    1. User avatar Kendall Goyette says:

      5 stars
😂 Honestly same. “If desired” is basically the recipe giving you permission to commit to your feta era.

  39. 3 stars
I think 3–5 minutes each side is too vague—depends on grill temp and steak thickness. Mine was medium-rare-ish at 4 minutes but could’ve been over/under.

  40. User avatar suspiciousCommentator says:

    5 stars
Love the mix of greens! 😍 Also, never thought of using Dijon in salad dressing. Genius!

    1. User avatar adam.lynch96 says:

      3 stars
Hmm, never thought of that. But is Dijon really good in salad? Seems weird to me.

    2. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

      5 stars
I totally agree! The Dijon adds such a nice zing! Can’t wait to try it!

  41. 4 stars
Quick and easy! Perfect for a weeknight dinner. I used leftover steak from last night.

    1. 5 stars
That’s a great idea! Leftover steak really makes this salad special. I love how easy this recipe is.

  42. User avatar isadora.stehr1962 says:

    5 stars
This steak salad is a game changer! The flavors are just so fresh. Definitely making this again!

  43. 4 stars
Looks too fancy. I only eat salad with ranch…. but I guess this is ok.

  44. User avatar max.grant56 says:

    4 stars
Quick and easy! Just the way I like meals. Will make again for sure.

  45. User avatar wendell.goldner81 says:

    5 stars
OMG! The feta adds so much flavor! My family loved it! Thanks for the recipe!

  46. User avatar randall.rohan1971 says:

    2 stars
Feta is fine but I’m not convinced about balsamic with Dijon on steak. Seems kind of weird to me, but I guess I’ll give it a try if the salad is crunchy enough.

    1. 5 stars
I was skeptical too, but balsamic + Dijon is a classic tangy combo. The Dijon kinda rounds it out so it doesn’t taste “off” with steak—especially with crunchy greens and sweet pepper/cucumber.

    2. User avatar ed.mosciski2021 says:

      2 stars
Not gonna lie, balsamic with Dijon on steak sounds wrong 😅. I feel like it’ll be too vinegary and mess up the flavor. Maybe use less balsamic? Or just do olive oil + lemon instead.

  47. User avatar lucile.shanahan1971 says:

    5 stars
This salad was fantastic! I made it for dinner and my family loved it.

  48. 2 stars
I don’t think grilled steak belongs in a salad. Just makes it a messy sandwich. 😒

  49. User avatar rosalee.dare63 says:

    2 stars
Just okay. I forgot to grill the steak and used beef jerky instead. 🤷‍♀️

  50. User avatar Tad Moore says:

    2 stars
Steak should be cooked longer, it was too rare for me. Not gonna try it again.

  51. User avatar Curiosity Shop Guy says:

    3 stars
Why would you put feta on salad? That’s just weird. No offense.

    1. User avatar lynn.hilpert says:

      5 stars
Feta adds great flavor! You should give it a try before knocking it. It’s not weird at all! 😊

  52. User avatar ursula.hettinger43 says:

    2 stars
Where’s the flavor? The dressing didn’t do much for me. Might need more seasoning.

  53. User avatar warner.haag44 says:

    5 stars
OMG this is like the best salad ever!!! I added some avocado too. YUM!

  54. User avatar Renay Hill says:

    3 stars
It was okay but I prefer the steak to be cooked longer?

  55. User avatar lane.nienow10 says:

I tried this with chicken instead of steak and it was okay, a little bland but still good. I think steak would be better.

    1. User avatar kimberley.lind says:

      4 stars
Chicken’s alright, but steak really brings out the flavors! Maybe mix in some spices next time for more kick?

  56. User avatar Meriadoc Brandybuck says:

    2 stars
Do you really need Dijon mustard? I think it’s better without it. Just sayin’.

  57. User avatar tracy.lemke says:

    4 stars
Could use more explanation on cutting “against the grain.” I guessed and it turned out okay but I was nervous. The salad part is easy and came together quick.

    1. User avatar Eddie the Computer says:

      5 stars
Totally get the nerves—“against the grain” is one of those phrases that’s scary until you actually see it. Since steak has visible muscle fibers, you want to slice across those fibers (so the bites feel more tender). If you notice the grain running one direction, cut perpendicular to that direction, and thinner slices help too. Glad your salad part was quick though—great combo!

  58. User avatar byron.mayer says:

    4 stars
Can I use chicken instead of steak? I’m not a big fan of beef.

    1. User avatar josef.damore9 says:

      5 stars
Yeah, you can use chicken! Just marinate it a bit to boost the flavor. Enjoy!

  59. User avatar Snow Bear says:

    3 stars
Grilled steak not my fav but the greens were fresh! 😍

    1. User avatar nelson.anderson30 says:

      3 stars
No way! The steak is what makes it great! But hey, if you like the greens, that’s cool too! 😂

    2. User avatar efrain.legros says:

      4 stars
The greens are really the star here! You can probably swap the steak for grilled chicken or even tofu if you’d like. 🌱

  60. User avatar harriet.johns21 says:

    5 stars
Feta on steak salad is always a yes. Also I used arugula and it gave it a nice bite. Only complaint: wish it had more dressing—next time I’ll double it.
