Grilled Lobster Tails

January 13, 2025

Grilled lobster tails are the epitome of indulgence, offering a delicious, smoky flavor while keeping the natural sweetness and tenderness of lobster intact. Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or simply craving a luxurious meal, grilled lobster tails are a simple yet impressive dish that’s sure to wow your guests or elevate your dinner. With a few key ingredients and a grill, you can enjoy this succulent seafood delicacy in the comfort of your own home.

The beauty of grilled lobster tails lies in the method of cooking. The lobster meat is naturally delicate and sweet, and grilling it brings out its rich flavors while adding a smoky char that enhances its taste. The key to perfectly grilled lobster tails is not overcooking them, as the meat can easily become tough and rubbery if left on the grill for too long. When done correctly, the lobster is tender, juicy, and full of flavor.

To prepare the lobster tails, start by cutting down the middle of the shell with kitchen scissors or a sharp knife, being careful not to cut through the meat. You can gently pull the meat out of the shell, keeping it attached at the base, and place it on top of the shell for an elegant presentation. This also makes it easier to season and grill the lobster. Before grilling, season the lobster tails with a generous amount of butter, garlic, and lemon juice. The butter adds richness, while the garlic and lemon provide aromatic flavor that perfectly complements the lobster.

Next, preheat your grill to medium-high heat and brush the grates with oil to prevent sticking. Place the lobster tails on the grill, meat side down, and cook for about 5-7 minutes. Flip the lobster tails over, brushing them with more butter and seasoning, and continue grilling for another 3-5 minutes until the meat is opaque and tender. A good rule of thumb is to cook the lobster for about 1 minute per ounce.

For the finishing touch, serve the lobster tails with extra melted butter and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice. Garnish with fresh herbs, such as parsley or thyme, for added freshness. The combination of smoky char and buttery, garlicky lobster creates a dish that’s both decadent and satisfying. Whether served as the main course or as part of a seafood feast, grilled lobster tails offer a refined dining experience that’s surprisingly easy to make.

I dunno, tastes kinda fishy for lobsters, I think I overcooked it 😕. Not sure if I will try again.

    Wut’s paprika? Can I use any seasoning? I don’t have lobster tails either… :-/

    1. User avatar jared.leuschke says:

      3 stars
Lobster tails can be expensive, maybe try shrimp? And just use whatever spices you got, it’s cooking after all!

    2. User avatar leopoldo.hartmann says:

      4 stars
Paprika is a spice made from dried peppers. You can use cayenne or even chili powder if you want. Just don’t skip the butter and garlic! 😋

  4. User avatar carmen.satterfield says:

    3 stars
Too much garlic! Next time, less garlic plz.

  5. User avatar Tricia McMillan says:

I did not like this at all. The lobster was overcooked and rubbery. What a waste of money. 1 star.

I don’t know about grilling lobster. Seems risky. What if it gets tough?

This was absolutely delicious! The butter garlic mixture is a game changer!

  9. 5 stars
Grilled lobster tails? What a gourmet experience! I felt like a chef at a fancy restaurant after making these. Will impress guests for sure!

  10. 4 stars
Followed step 3 carefully (didn’t nick the meat like I usually do 😅). Still juuuust a little under-seasoned for my taste, but overall delicious.

Lobster tails? Whut? I’m just here for the butter honestly.

  12. User avatar rich.landlord says:

The butter mix smelled amazing. Mine stuck a little to the grill though—maybe I didn’t oil the grates enough. Flavor still A+.

  13. 5 stars
So good!!! Best way 2 cook lobster, I just tossed on a bit of lemon juice🤤!

  14. User avatar tran.stamm18 says:

    5 stars
Lobster tails? yes!!! So good. I had extra lemon so I put it on everything lol.

    1. 5 stars
Lemon on everything is the correct move 😄 That sounds seriously delicious—grilled lobster tails with garlic-butter is my dream.

  15. User avatar monroe.krajcik95 says:

I used frozen lobster tails (partially thawed). Texture was a bit off, more watery, but the flavor was still great thanks to the butter mix.

    1. User avatar Jayson Frami says:

      4 stars
That watery texture makes sense with partially thawed lobster tails—next time try fully thawing them (and patting them dry) before grilling. Glad the butter mix still nailed the flavor though!

  16. 5 stars
The steps are clear, especially cutting the shell carefully. I was nervous but it came out tender, not rubbery. Great recipe.

  17. 5 stars
This recipe is fantastic! The lobster came out so juicy and flavorful. Will definitely make again.

These turned out surprisingly restaurant-level. The garlic-butter-lemon combo is perfect and the cook time was spot on for my 7-oz tails.

Made these last night—wow. The garlic-lemon butter is perfect and the timing worked out (mine took closer to 4 min after flipping). Will definitely grill again.

  23. 2 stars
It was ok, but honestly, I prefer my lobster in a stew. Not sure why people grill it.

  24. User avatar serita.graham79 says:

    4 stars
Tried this and the butter mixture kinda pooled a bit on the grill. Next time I’ll brush more lightly—still delicious though.

  25. User avatar mia.kertzmann1998 says:

So good, but why do you need to put butter? Can’t it be healthy without it?

    1. User avatar leon.schiller84 says:

      3 stars
But you can skip the butter if you want to be healthier! Maybe use olive oil instead?

    2. User avatar suspiciousCommentator says:

      5 stars
Butter adds flavor and richness! Plus, it’s a delicacy, not a diet food. Enjoy it as is!

  26. 4 stars
Can you use Old Bay instead of paprika? Asking for a friend. 🤔

    1. User avatar suzanna.ratke says:

      4 stars
Old Bay sounds good! It will give a different flavor but still tasty! 😋

Grilling lobster scares me because it dries out fast, but the instructions were clear. I was worried when I turned them and they looked slightly translucent, but they ended up opaque.

  28. User avatar dalton.dickinson95 says:

Too much work for a shellfish! Just get a burger! 2 stars.

  29. User avatar collin.upton says:

I don’t think its right not to boil it first, that’s how ya do it! Grillin seems off.

    1. User avatar joe_banana says:

      4 stars
I understand your concern, but grilling them unboiled really brings out the flavor! It’s a different technique that’s really popular.

  30. 5 stars

    4 stars
My grill is broken so I baked it in the oven. Turned out good but not the same.

  32. User avatar Piter De Vries says:

    2 stars
Y’all really grill lobster? Seems a bit too tricky. I’d stick with shrimp.

  33. User avatar Ms. Erlinda Fisher says:

    5 stars
Wow, these were a hit at the party! Everyone loved them, and I felt like a pro. Thanks for this!

  34. 2 stars
So I followed the steps but they were still chewy. Maybe I grilled too long? Any advice on cooking times would be helpful!

  35. 3 stars
The instructions are pretty clear, except I don’t have kitchen shears. I just used a sharp knife and it was messy, lol. Flavor was still good though.

  36. User avatar claud.johnson49 says:

    2 stars
Way too much butter for my taste. Also I’m not sure why paprika—seems unnecessary. But my family ate it all so I guess it works.

  37. 1 star
Lobster gonna cost too much! I don’t know if I can afford this haha

  38. User avatar wilbur.ortiz1980 says:

    5 stars
These lobster tails turned out amazing! The garlic butter mix was perfect. Five stars!

    1. User avatar clemente.prosacco says:

      3 stars
But is it really that good? I’ve tried other recipes and was disappointed. Maybe I should give it a shot, but I don’t know about the garnish part. 🤔

    2. 5 stars
I’m so glad to hear that! The garlic butter sounds delish. I can’t wait to try this recipe myself. Thanks for sharing your success! 👍

  39. User avatar smartestRedditor says:

Yummmmm! My family loved it! I added some chili flakes for a kick. Will definitely make again! 5 stars!!!

  40. User avatar bobbye.marvin1992 says:

    3 stars
I’m skeptical about grilling lobster that short—5 minutes flesh-side down?? Mine stuck a bit to the grates even with butter. Flavor was okay though.

  41. User avatar doreatha.toy37 says:

    4 stars
Really good flavor, but I wish it said how to tell when they’re done exactly. I was nervous about overcooking since mine got a tiny bit chewy.

    1. User avatar basementDweller says:

      5 stars
Totally get the worry—lobster goes from perfect to chewy fast. I look for the meat to turn fully opaque all the way to the center, and it should feel just barely firm (not bouncy/rubbery). Also, if the internal temp is around 140–145°F at the thickest part, you’re usually golden. Hope that helps!

  42. User avatar hermila.schaefer8 says:

    2 stars
What’s paprika? Do you have to use it? Seems like just extra work.

  43. 3 stars
too much butter for my liking. Thought it would be different, maybe add olive oil next time?

  44. User avatar harvey.kuhic95 says:

    3 stars
I’m skeptical about the paprika amount—like, will it overpower the lobster? Honestly it was fine, but I think I’d use a pinch less next time.

  45. 3 stars
Did anyone else think this was too greasy? Butter can make it too oily, maybe less next time?

  46. 2 stars
I tried this but my lobster was overcooked. Very sad. Followed the time exactly.

  47. User avatar brianna.jast83 says:

    3 stars
Way too fancy for me, tho I did try it. Not sure I like lobster. 😂

    1. User avatar Marietta Rohan says:

      4 stars
Lobster can be a bit much for some! But if you like the butter and garlic, you might find a way to enjoy it. 😂

  48. User avatar leopoldo.ferry2007 says:

    4 stars
Too much butter? Maybe try olive oil next time. But overall, good!

  49. User avatar lewis.kuhn6 says:

    5 stars
I followed it exactly except I used smoked paprika and it was great. The parsley on top makes it look fancy.

  50. User avatar mitchell.okuneva97 says:

    4 stars
Easy and delicious! Just a little too much butter for my taste. Next time I’ll cut it down a bit. 4/5.

    1. User avatar terminatorXYZ says:

      5 stars
I totally get that! Too much butter can mask the lobster’s flavor. Maybe try using olive oil next time for a lighter taste.

  51. User avatar carroll.tillman says:

    4 stars
I followed the recipe exactly and it was delicious! But I think you could add some chili flakes for a kick. 4 stars.

  52. User avatar heath.harris11 says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, I was nervous about cutting the shell, but the instructions were clear. Mine were slightly over, but still super tasty.

  53. User avatar scarlett.bogan41 says:

    3 stars
Grilled mine for a bit too long, they were chewy. Gotta keep an eye on them next time. 3/5

  54. 4 stars
5 minutes flesh side down felt too short to me, so I did 7 and they were perfect. Could be grill-dependent.

  55. 4 stars
Yum! This recipe was easy to follow and the lobster tasted amazing! Will be making again for sure!

  56. 5 stars
My husband not like lobster, so I eat all! Hehe.

  57. User avatar celeste.lebsack says:

    2 stars
I don’t understand why people want to grill lobsters. Boiling is way better, don’t you think? 2/5

  58. User avatar danita.kreiger1955 says:

    3 stars
My garlic turned a little dark (oops). I think my grill was hotter than medium-high. Still tasted like restaurant food, so I’ll try again.

    1. User avatar Abel Hilpert says:

      5 stars
Oof, dark garlic happens when the grill’s running a bit hot. Next time, add the garlic later in the butter (or use a gentler heat / quick brush so it doesn’t sit there). Glad it still tasted good though—restaurant vibes is a win!

  59. User avatar anonymous_hacker says:

    4 stars
Super easy instructions! I made this for a special date and it was a hit! 😍

Grilled lobster is my weakness, and this method is surprisingly simple. The butter mix smelled amazing. Would definitely do again.

    1. User avatar laquita.zboncak says:

Yes! I love how simple it is—those butter+garlic+lemon notes are hard to beat. I’m doing this next lobster night for sure.

  65. User avatar Colette A. Day says:

  66. 5 stars
Grilled lobster is my fave! Always a hit with guests. Thanks for sharing!

    1. User avatar laronda.graham62 says:

      3 stars
Looks good, but is it really that easy? I’ve had some fail lobster dinners before. Just sayin’.

Grilled lobster is the best! I love how it pairs with the garlic butter. Can’t wait to try this recipe!

  67. 5 stars
This is the best lobster tail recipe I’ve tried! The garlic butter was divine. 5 stars!

  68. 2 stars
Not bad, but 5 minutes flesh side down seems too long for my grill. I ended up with slightly chewy meat. Still tasted good with the lemon butter.

    1. User avatar hipolito.dach3 says:

      5 stars
Good call—every grill runs different. On mine 5 minutes flesh-side down would definitely push it toward chewy. I usually do like 2–3 minutes tops, then flip and finish quickly.

    2. 4 stars
I think chewy means it was overcooked more than the exact flip time. Lobster can go from perfect to tough fast—next time pull when it’s just opaque and still a little springy.

  69. User avatar george.keeling says:

    4 stars
Grilled lobster tails? It’s actually so easy! Just follow instructions.

  70. User avatar tissues_with_issues says:

    5 stars
Made this last night—so simple and the garlic-butter combo is legit. Mine were done a tiny bit fast, but still juicy. Will absolutely grill again.

    1. User avatar jay.batz40 says:

      5 stars
Yes!! That garlic-butter + lemon is the whole point. I’m glad yours stayed juicy even if it ran a bit quick—lobster is so easy to overdo.

  71. 5 stars
This looks amazing! Can’t wait to try it this weekend. #foodie

  72. User avatar chadwick.anderson says:

    5 stars
This was sooo good! The butter mix was perfect! I could eat this every day! 5/5! 🦞

  73. User avatar kristan.walter1963 says:

    1 star
Why do you need paprika? I just use salt and pepper. It seems like a waste of time.

  74. User avatar kymberly.rath1996 says:

    3 stars
I tried this recipe and it was kind of bland. I added some chili flakes and it was better but not sure if I’d make it again.

  75. 3 stars
I followed exactly but mine didn’t turn out like yours. Sad face 😞. Maybe I’ll try again.

  76. User avatar margy.treutel56 says:

    3 stars
I think the garlic amount is too much. It was kinda punchy and almost bitter, even with fresh lemon. Next time I’ll use 1 clove.

  77. User avatar Arthur Philip Deodat says:

    3 stars
not sure about grilling them…. isn’t that a bit odd? I just used a pan. still turned out ok tho. 3/5

  78. 1 star
    Lobster? Not my kinda food.

  79. User avatar cecily.herman42 says:

    4 stars
This tasted restaurant-y. I used regular paprika (not smoked) and it still came out great. Parsley garnish makes it look fancy.

  80. 5 stars
The paprika actually adds a nice color. I used smoked paprika and it smelled amazing on the grill.

    1. User avatar nicholle.brekke2024 says:

      3 stars
Smoked paprika smells good but 1 tsp feels like a lot for just “color.” I might try regular paprika next time—also, do you flip them the meat-side or shell-side? 😅

    2. User avatar clora.roob says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—smoked paprika is a game changer. The color and that grill-y aroma must’ve been amazing!

  81. User avatar cecilia.erdman4 says:

    4 stars
So simple but it actually tastes fancy. I didn’t have fresh parsley so I used dried and it was still really good.

  82. User avatar art.mitchell99 says:

    2 stars
I don’t think grilled lobster is worth it. Tastes the same as steamed to me.

  83. User avatar Zaphod Beeblebrox says:

    4 stars
I didn’t have fresh parsley so I used dried. Still tasted good, just not as fresh. Next time I’ll follow it closer.

  84. 4 stars
Paprika in lobster butter?! Weird in theory, but it adds a nice color and subtle warmth. Didn’t overwhelm the flavor.

  85. 4 stars
This is pretty straightforward. I didn’t have fresh parsley so I used dried and it was still good, just less bright. Next time I’ll follow the timing more closely.

    1. 4 stars
I always overcook lobster tails 😅 Your timing note helps. Also I’m curious—do you feel medium-high is closer to 350F-ish or hotter? Mine usually turns rubbery.

    2. User avatar jamel.hauck18 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—parsley is mostly for that fresh pop. Dried works in a pinch, just won’t be as bright. Nice save!

  86. User avatar gale.gibson says:

    5 stars
Made this tonight and wow—super flavorful. The garlic-butter-lemon combo really shines on the grill. I cooked mine closer to 4 minutes on the second side and it was perfect.

  87. User avatar tissues_with_issues says:

    4 stars
My grill flare-ups were crazy. I think I put too much butter on, but once I calmed it down, the lobster turned out excellent.

  88. 5 stars
Absolutely delicious! This was my first time grilling lobster tails and they turned out perfect. The butter mixture was fantastic!

    1. User avatar deborah.rowe43 says:

      5 stars
That’s awesome! I love grilling lobster tails. The butter mixture makes them so tasty. Going to try this recipe soon!

    1. User avatar jody.gerlach says:

      5 stars
Yes!! Garlic + lemon is the move. I also get nervous about cutting the shell, but your comment makes me feel better—might try it this week.

  91. User avatar paul.wilkinson1986 says:

    4 stars
I dont have a grill so i did it on a cast iron skillet, and it still came out decent. Kinda sad it’s not as smoky but taste was there.

  92. User avatar stacee.dietrich77 says:

    4 stars
Not gonna lie, cutting the shell with shears scares me lol. But the instruction is actually clear. If you’re careful, it’s doable—mine turned out pretty decent.

  93. User avatar letisha.kshlerin2015 says:

    2 stars
Five minutes one side and 3-5 the other is maybe too fast? I feel like lobster always needs more time, unless you’re using tiny tails… mine was kinda undercooked.

    1. User avatar randolph.botsford50 says:

      5 stars
Totally fair point—lobster can be tricky. 5 minutes + 3-5 minutes depends a lot on tail size and grill heat. If yours was undercooked, you might need closer to 6-8 minutes total on the second side (or just go until it’s fully opaque). I also try not to blast it too high.

  94. User avatar Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz says:

    5 stars
Wow. The whole house smelled like a fancy seafood restaurant. I served it with rice and it was gone instantly.

    1. User avatar rodney.schaden1959 says:

      4 stars
Okay but real talk—how did you not overcook it? Mine went rubbery once… I think I flipped too soon. Yours sounds perfect though!

    2. 5 stars
Love hearing this! The butter-garlic-lemon combo really makes it smell “restaurant level.” 😋

  95. User avatar tyler.pfannerstill says:

    4 stars
I did almost the same thing but my grilling time ran a bit long, so mine got a little chewy. Still tasted great though. Next time I’ll keep a closer eye on the “opaque” part.

  96. User avatar zulma.schaden86 says:

    4 stars
Pretty good, but my lobster took closer to 8 minutes total to turn opaque. Maybe my grill runs hotter—watch it like a hawk.

    1. User avatar halflife4 says:

      5 stars
Good point—lobster can definitely vary with size and grill temp. 5 min + 3–5 is more like a guideline; watching for opacity is the real key.

  97. User avatar carson.sporer says:

    5 stars
Wow, this looks insanely simple for how fancy it feels. The butter-garlic-lemon combo is perfect for lobster tails—definitely trying this weekend.

  98. User avatar mauro.altenwerth45 says:

    5 stars
Honestly, lobster tails are expensive and I usually mess them up. This was the first time it didn’t turn rubbery. Thank you!

  99. 5 stars
I was skeptical about cooking time, but 5 min + 4 min worked for my 7 oz tails. The paprika in the butter is a nice touch too.

  100. User avatar CTRLplusW says:

    3 stars
Mine stuck a little to the grates. Next time I’ll oil the grates more or use foil. Still tasted great though.

  101. User avatar hermine.feeney1962 says:

I’m skeptical about the time—mine were closer to 10 minutes total because the tails were thick. But once adjusted, they were tender.

Good call on the time—thickness makes a huge difference. I’ve had “5 minutes” turn into closer to 8–10 if the tails are chunky. The key is opacity and firmness, not the clock. 👍

    Wow! Easy and fancy 😋

I tried following exactly, but my grill runs hot. I had to pull them early and then they were still perfect—so I guess it’s forgiving?

Honestly that sounds about right—lobster’s super forgiving once you’re watching the doneness. Mine runs hot too, so I always start checking a minute or two early.

Not bad, but I think 2 cloves of garlic is too much for me personally. The lemon helped balance it, so I’m giving it a solid score.

I used 1 clove once and it still tasted garlicky to me. But hey, grilled lobster is forgiving. Your score seems fair.

Totally get that—garlic can be a lot depending on how strong yours is. The lemon balancing makes sense though. Glad you liked it!

I’m skeptical about grilling lobster tails for that short—mine were underdone the first time. Second try I added like 2 minutes and it was perfect.

Totally—5 + 3 felt way too fast the first time for me too. I’ve learned it really depends on tail size. Your adjustment makes sense.

Wait, 5 minutes flesh side down and then 3-5 after? That’s like 8-10 total… mine was rubbery last time, never again. I’d rather steam them first or use a thermometer.

Honestly I think I overcooked them. They turned rubbery for a minute, then I just ate them anyway lol. Flavor was good, though.

Confusing part: “cut from the outside” sounds risky 😅 but the flavor is so good I’d try again with better lobster prep.

I might’ve left them on a bit too long… but the butter mixture still saved it. Next time I’ll watch closer.

Not bad, but I think 6-8 oz should be cooked a little less/ more depending on thickness. Mine got slightly overdone at the end.

These came out restaurant-level. The garlic-butter-lemon combo is legit—took only minutes and didn’t taste fishy at all. Will make again for sure.
