Gravy

November 17, 2023

Gravy is more than just a sauce, it’s the finishing touch that ties an entire meal together. Whether it’s poured over mashed potatoes, drizzled on turkey, or soaked into stuffing, gravy adds depth, richness, and comfort. It’s that warm, savory element that turns a good plate of food into something memorable.

What makes gravy so beloved is its ability to enhance flavor while bringing everything on the plate into harmony. It usually starts with the flavorful drippings from roasted meat, combined with stock and thickened with flour or cornstarch. But from that basic foundation, there are endless variations. Some prefer a classic brown gravy made from beef or turkey drippings, while others lean toward creamy versions made with milk or cream. Even vegetarian and vegan gravies have found a place at the modern table, using mushrooms, onions, or soy sauce to mimic that deep umami profile.

Gravy carries with it a sense of tradition. It’s a staple at holiday meals and Sunday dinners, a nostalgic link to family gatherings and home-cooked feasts. The smell alone can bring back memories, the sizzle of a roast in the oven, the bubbling pot on the stove, and the moment everyone quiets down to eat.

Making gravy can feel a little intimidating, especially when you’re trying to avoid lumps or get just the right consistency. But once mastered, it’s one of the most satisfying things to cook. It rewards attention to detail and a bit of patience. Taste as you go, keep stirring, and you’ll end up with something worth savoring.

Gravy also shines when repurposed. Leftovers can be used in sandwiches, poured over rice or noodles, or added to casseroles for extra flavor. It’s one of those ingredients that stretches a meal further and makes everything taste just a bit better.

In the end, gravy is comfort in liquid form. It may not be the centerpiece, but it plays a starring role in making meals feel hearty, homey, and complete.

Overall, while gravy may not be the healthiest option on its own, it can be enjoyed as part of a balanced diet when consumed in moderation and made with nutrient-rich ingredients.

I dunno about using all that flour, seemed excessive. My grandma just uses cornstarch!

    1. User avatar w00d_ch0p says:

      4 stars
Cornstarch can work too! But I think the flour gives it a richer taste. Each to their own, right?

  9. 5 stars
Best gravy ever! I never thought it could be this easy!

Totally agree! Gravy should be this easy. Can’t wait to try this!

    1. User avatar luetta.anderson says:

Nah, it’s not too complicated! Just follow the steps. Better than that packet stuff, trust me!

  15. User avatar emerita.gerhold says:

    2 stars
Gravy??? Sure, I guess but I prefer mine from a can.

  16. 3 stars
Can I use beef drippings instead? Hope it still tastes good.

    1. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

      2 stars
I don’t think it will work, like, it’s not the same flavor as turkey or chicken. Just stick to the recipe!

    2. User avatar elbert.nikolaus says:

      4 stars
Beef drippings? That’s an idea! I bet it’ll taste rich and flavorful. Just don’t expect the same taste as chicken or turkey gravy. Good luck!

Gravy? More like slop! This did not taste like what grandma made. Not impressed.

  20. 3 stars
Meh, pretty standard. Might as well just buy a jar of the stuff instead. Not impressed.

  21. User avatar janyce.quitzon1966 says:

    3 stars
Nice recipe. But if you dont have drippings, what’s the point? #justsaying

  22. User avatar Ha Dahamar says:

    2 stars
Is it even gravy if it doesn’t have meat bits in it? Just sayin’.

    1. User avatar christoper.runolfsdottir says:

      3 stars
Nah, I think gravy can be just fine without meat in it. This recipe sounds good, even if it’s not traditional.

    2. 4 stars
I get what you’re saying, but some people love a good vegetarian gravy too! It doesn’t always have to be meaty to be delicious.

  23. User avatar blossom.runolfsdottir2018 says:

    3 stars
Just followed the recipe but mine didn’t turn out right. It was too thick. Help!

  24. User avatar christeen.fahey75 says:

Gravy! ❤️❤️❤️ Perfect for my biscuits. I could just drink it!

  25. User avatar Ra'zhinda says:

    2 stars
My gravy came out a bit lumpy. Not sure what I did wrong. 🤔

  26. User avatar wilfredo.ryan16 says:

    2. User avatar chi.stroman20 says:

      3 stars
Tasted good, but mine didn’t turn out like your grandma’s. Maybe I did something wrong?

  27. User avatar felisha.bailey54 says:

    4 stars
Gravy is basically just meat juice. You just throw it all together, right? My mom made it from scratch but I still like this way.

  28. User avatar tashina.oreilly45 says:

    4 stars
I’m skeptical of using flour and water like that—felt a bit weird at first—but it actually came together. Nice mouthfeel.

    1. User avatar fatima.denesik98 says:

      5 stars
Same here—I was nervous about the flour-water step, but once it hit the hot drippings/broth it thickened way faster than I expected. The mouthfeel is legit.

    2. User avatar w00d_ch0p says:

      3 stars
idk man, gravy is usually butter + roux right? I tried this and it worked but i think my flour lumped a bit bc i didn’t whisk long enough. still pretty good tho 😅

  29. 3 stars
I think the ratio is a little off? Mine was thinner than I expected even after simmering 10 minutes. Maybe my drippings were watery.

  30. User avatar jarrett.spinka78 says:

    1 star
Gravy? More like a science experiment. I tried and it came out lumpy. Shoulda just bought a jar from the store.

    1. 5 stars
Nah, store-bought is not the same! You just gotta practice more. Give it another shot, you’ll get it right!

    2. 4 stars
I get it! Making gravy can be tricky. I’ve had lumpy gravy before too. Maybe try adding the flour mixture slower next time?

  31. 2 stars
I followed the recipe but the gravy ended up too thick and lumpy. Not sure what went wrong.

  32. 1 star
Y’all, just a heads up, I tried to make this without broth ’cause I was out. BIG mistake! It did not taste good… 🙁

  33. User avatar gregorio.homenick79 says:

    5 stars
Simple and tasty! Five minutes simmer and boom—gravy. I’m making this every holiday now.

  34. User avatar kathrine.erdman22 says:

    1 star
Flour and water? This is just mean. I thought it was gonna be something special.

    1. User avatar Demon King Piccolo says:

      4 stars
I get where you’re coming from, but gravy is about using the drippings! It’s not just flour and water. It’s all about flavor! Give it a try!

  35. User avatar Orange Dartwing says:

    5 stars
Tried this with turkey drippings and it turned out silky and not lumpy at all. Whisking the flour slurry made the difference—thank you!

  36. 5 stars
Finally, a gravy that doesn’t taste like wallpaper paste. I used leftover chicken drippings and it thickened up nicely after a few minutes—salty-peppery just right.

  37. 4 stars
Great recipe! I didn’t have drippings so I just used broth. Still tasted good! Thanks for sharing!

  38. User avatar flossie.shanahan1996 says:

    4 stars
Tasty! I didn’t have enough drippings so I used beef broth instead. Still turned out great!

  39. User avatar ShanksOnePiece says:

    4 stars
This is basically gravy 101. Nothing fancy, but that’s what I wanted. Tastes like Thanksgiving at home.

  40. User avatar Curiosity Shop Guy says:

    2 stars
I tried this recipe and my gravy came out lumpy. I don’t know what I did wrong. Any tips?

    1. User avatar kelsi.franecki says:

      4 stars
Sounds like you might’ve added the flour too quickly! Make sure to whisk it in slowly, and it should be smoother next time. Good luck!

  41. User avatar shannon.rosenbaum27 says:

    4 stars
I was worried about lumps, but whisking the flour + water first helped a lot. I added a little extra pepper and it tasted like the stuff from holidays.

  42. User avatar lyle.mcclure0 says:

    5 stars
I made this for Thanksgiving, and everyone loved it! Gravy is life.

      5 stars
Sounds delish! Garlic makes everything better, right?

  44. User avatar joana.swift22 says:

I don’t really like gravy, but my family enjoyed it. So there’s that.

    1. User avatar allyn.littel68 says:

      4 stars
Gravy’s not for everyone! But I’m glad your family liked it. Sometimes you gotta compromise a little in the kitchen.

  45. 5 stars
Yesss! Finally found a good gravy recipe. Works great with mashed potatoes!

  46. User avatar Gag Halfrunt says:

    2 stars
Tried this recipe but it didn’t turn out right. My gravy was too thick and tasted bland.

  47. 3 stars
I used beef drippings instead and it turned out okay. Not great but okay.

  48. 3 stars
It thickened way too fast, like I couldn’t keep up stirring! Maybe I added too much flour? 🤔

  49. 5 stars
This gravy was amazing! So easy to make and tasted delicious. Perfect for my roast chicken!

  50. User avatar sunshine.murphy says:

    5 stars
This is the best gravy recipe I’ve ever tried! Super easy and delicious!

  51. User avatar seth.kilback72 says:

    5 stars
Super simple. Whisking the flour+water first helped a lot so no lumps. I’m not a great cook and this was forgiving.

    1. User avatar Godiva Headache says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—whisking the flour+water first is the cheat code for lump-free gravy. I’m also not a pro, so “forgiving” is exactly the right word. 😊

    2. User avatar loretta.lind23 says:

      3 stars
Hmm, I tried this but mine got kinda pasty after simmering. Maybe my drippings were too cold? Next time I’ll whisk longer. Thanks though!

  52. User avatar carlton.rempel says:

    3 stars
Not bad, but mine got a little too thick—probably whisked too long or let it simmer too hard. Next time I’ll adjust the flour/water ratio.

    1. 5 stars
Yeah, that makes sense. If it simmers too hard the flour can really tighten up—next time try a gentler simmer and whisking until it just coats a spoon.

  53. 1 star
Isn’t gravy just fat? Why bother making it if it’s just gonna sit on your plate?

    1. User avatar loyd.lueilwitz says:

      5 stars
Gravy adds flavor and richness to a meal! It’s not just fat, it’s deliciousness! 😋

  54. User avatar stacey.schinner67 says:

    2 stars
I don’t know, the flour made it kinda weird. Tasted more like paste than gravy.

  55. 5 stars
5 stars! Just like my grandma used to make! Yum!!!

  56. 5 stars
This is exactly what I needed after making roast chicken—quick, no fuss, and it actually thickened up nicely. I added a little extra pepper at the end and it tasted like restaurant gravy.

  57. User avatar ashlie.toy59 says:

    5 stars
This recipe is fantastic! I made it for Thanksgiving and everyone loved it. So easy to make!

    1. 5 stars
I’m so glad to hear you loved it! Gravy can really make a meal special, especially during holidays!

    2. 2 stars
Thanksgiving? But isn’t gravy just brown sauce? I don’t get the hype. Must be nice for you though!

  58. User avatar marilu.sauer10 says:

    5 stars
Yum, yum, yum! Gravy is life! Went well with mashed potatoes and turkey!

    1. User avatar Michael83 says:

      5 stars
Gravy is the best! I always make extra so I can pour it on everything! 😍

  59. 2 stars
Just okay. I was expecting something more flavorful. Maybe I’m missing the right spices.

  60. 5 stars
This gravy was a hit! Perfect with my roast chicken. Will definitely make again!

    1. User avatar rory.price1973 says:

      5 stars
So glad to hear that! Gravy really makes the meal special! What else did you serve it with?

    2. User avatar Corrupted Shade says:

      3 stars
Did it really come out that good? I tried making gravy once and it was a disaster! Maybe I need your recipe.
