Fig and Date Energy Balls

February 8, 2024

Fig and date energy balls are the ultimate no-bake snack that’s both satisfying and nutritious. Packed with natural sweetness from dried figs and dates, along with the richness of nuts and seeds, these little bites provide a perfect balance of energy-boosting ingredients. Whether you need a quick breakfast, a pre-workout snack, or a midday pick-me-up, these energy balls are the perfect option.

The base of this recipe includes dried figs and dates, both of which are naturally sweet and full of fiber. Dates, in particular, are known for their natural sugars, which give you an immediate energy boost without the crash that comes from refined sugar. The figs add a bit of chewy texture and a subtly earthy sweetness that complements the dates beautifully.

To bind everything together, you’ll add a handful of nuts, such as almonds, walnuts, or cashews, which provide healthy fats and a crunchy texture. Seeds like chia, flax, or pumpkin seeds can be mixed in for added nutrients, including omega-3 fatty acids, protein, and fiber. A little bit of coconut flakes or cacao powder can be added for extra flavor, making these energy balls even more delicious.

The best part about making fig and date energy balls is that you don’t need an oven, just a food processor. Simply blend the dried fruit and nuts together until they form a sticky dough. If the mixture is too dry, you can add a bit of water or a spoonful of honey to help everything come together. Once the mixture is ready, roll it into small balls, and refrigerate for at least an hour to allow them to firm up.

These energy balls are great for meal prepping and storing in the fridge for easy access throughout the week. They’re portable, convenient, and full of wholesome ingredients, making them a perfect snack to take on the go. Whether you’re fueling up before a workout, enjoying an afternoon snack, or simply craving something sweet, these fig and date energy balls are a nourishing and satisfying treat.

This recipe is simple to prepare and requires minimal ingredients. By blending figs, dates, and nuts together and shaping them into balls, you can have a batch of these delicious snacks ready in no time. They are perfect for a quick energy boost during busy days or as a healthier alternative to store-bought sweets.

These are dangerously easy. The texture is exactly what I want—sticky and not crumbly. I rolled mine in coconut and it tasted like dessert but without the guilt.

These balls aren’t a meal, just snacks! If you’re super hungry after, try having them with a banana or something!

I totally get what you mean! They might not be super filling, but they’re a good energy boost. Maybe pair them with some yogurt?

Dumb question but can I use frozen figs? Don’t wanna go to store.

  4. 2 stars
I don’t know, the texture is weird for me. I prefer my snacks crunchy.

  5. User avatar blair.bayer1971 says:

Meh, they’re okay. I thought they would be crunchier. more nuts next time!

Is the Nutritional Information for one energy ball? Or is it for the entire recipe?

    1. The nutritional information is per serving, representing one energy ball. We’d love to hear about your experience with the recipe—how did it turn out?

  7. 2 stars
I thought these were too sweet. Maybe cut down the honey next time. Not for me.

  8. 3 stars
Not bad, but I found it a bit too sweet for my taste. Maybe less honey next time?

My kids ate them so fast I didn’t get to try one 😂 The coconut coating is a win. Will double the batch next time.

  13. 2 stars
Do Not Mix Dates and Figs! Bad combo! Just stick to one, please!

  14. User avatar lon.langworth80 says:

    3 stars
Hmmm, I thought these would be more filling. I ate like 5 balls and still felt hungry. What’s up with that?

    1. User avatar mathWizard says:

      4 stars
I hear you! They can be a bit light, but I guess they’re more of a snack than a meal. Have you thought about adding some protein powder or having them with yogurt?

  15. User avatar berniece.shields57 says:

    5 stars
Great recipe! I skipped the nuts due to allergies and they turned out fine.

They taste like cat food… I’m sorry but I cannot eat this. 1/5

  17. User avatar Mila and her father says:

I dunno… the texture was kinda off for me. Maybe I blended them too much? Not sure I’ll try again.

  18. 2 stars
I don’t get why everyone loves these. They taste too sweet for me.

  19. User avatar Ms. Carlton Quigley says:

Honestly I think 1 cup figs + 1 cup dates is overkill sweet. Mine were so sticky I could barely roll them, like dough that didn’t want to be balls.

  20. User avatar theo.parisian60 says:

    4 stars
I made them with what I had (walnuts + cashews) and they turned out pretty rich and filling. The chia helps a lot, I think. Would make again.

    1. User avatar tammera.bogan says:

      5 stars
Nice! Using walnuts + cashews sounds like a great upgrade—chia is such a game changer for texture. Glad they held together for you. 😊

  21. User avatar Lumberjack says:

    5 stars
Tried these today—super sticky like the recipe said and they actually hold together. Sweet but not candy-sweet, and the chia adds a nice little texture. Will make again!

    1. User avatar Forest Minish says:

      3 stars
Interesting—mine didn’t hold together at first. I might’ve under-blended or my dates were drier. Still tasted good though. Any tips on how long you blended?

    2. User avatar ArabianNights says:

      5 stars
Yes!! I had the exact same experience—really sticky once you blend it right. I also love the chia texture. Makes me want to keep a stash in the fridge.

  22. User avatar ty.dibbert85 says:

Can I use nut butter instead of real nuts? I got allergies. Plz let me know.

  23. User avatar tai.konopelski1977 says:

So good! I rolled half in coconut and half in cocoa, and they disappeared fast. 1 hour in the fridge was enough for me—no weird aftertaste.

    1. User avatar chasity.fadel39 says:

      5 stars
Love this idea—coconut + cocoa sounds like the perfect combo. Glad 1 hour worked for you! I’ll try that next time.

Meh, not really my thing. Too chewy and I prefer salty snacks.

I didn’t have figs so I used prunes. Still good but not the same. Maybe worth a try if you run out!

  26. User avatar delma.collier58 says:

This is not a recipe. It’s just fruits mashed together! What is the difference?

I dunno… the figs were really weird tasting to me.

Nah, I think figs are great! You must’ve got a bad batch or something. They add a nice sweetness.

    2. User avatar Feral Falmer says:

I get what you mean! Figs can be an acquired taste. Maybe try adding more honey next time?

    1. 2 stars
Are these really that good? I thought they would taste weird with the figs and dates. 🤔

      5 stars
That’s awesome! My kids loved them too! I added some chocolate chips for extra sweetness.

  33. User avatar armand.russel59 says:

    4 stars
These look great! Do they last long in the fridge? I wanna make a bunch.

  34. User avatar sebastian.gislason says:

The ratio felt perfect—figs + dates make them naturally sweet. I’d add a pinch of salt next time though to make the flavors pop more.

    1. User avatar lyman.wiegand49 says:

      5 stars
Totally agree about the sweetness—figs + dates really do most of the work. I tried a tiny pinch of salt once and it made the flavors pop way more too!

    2. User avatar valentine.wisozk40 says:

      3 stars
Hmm I don’t know… I feel like too much salt would ruin the whole “healthy dessert” vibe. I just add a bit more vanilla instead and it tastes fine to me.

  35. 1 star
Sounds good, but figs? Eww. I’d rather eat something else. No thanks!

  36. User avatar Fenchurch says:

    4 stars
I didn’t have figs, so I used prunes instead. Still worked out fine.

    1. User avatar obdulia.runolfsson34 says:

      5 stars
Prunes are a great substitute! Good thinking!

  37. User avatar Vennie Bayer says:

Energy balls are always a bit suspicious to me—usually they taste like health food. These actually taste like real dessert though, so props.

    1. User avatar merrill.towne says:

      5 stars
Honestly same—I feel like energy balls are usually all “healthy” and no flavor. But these sound like they’d actually hit that dessert craving with figs + dates. I’m in 😄

  38. User avatar darrell.mills1956 says:

    2 stars
I found these way too sweet for my taste. Maybe less honey next time? Not sure if I’ll try again.

  39. User avatar hosea.wolf26 says:

    5 stars
Yum! Perfect for a quick snack on the go. I made mine with coconut and they were a hit!

  40. User avatar tiny.keebler28 says:

    3 stars
Pretty healthy-sounding but I’m skeptical. Dates and figs are still a lot of sugar. They’re tasty, sure, but I wouldn’t call them “healthy” without portion control.

    1. User avatar Sang Goyette says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—“healthy” is doing a lot of work here. Dates + figs are basically candy if you don’t portion it. I make these but only eat 1-2 and that’s it 😅
