Dakos

September 3, 2023

If you’re dreaming of the sun-drenched Greek islands, let your taste buds lead the way with Dakos, a simple, rustic dish from the island of Crete. Also known as koukouvagia (meaning “owl”), dakos is a traditional Cretan meze that effortlessly brings together the bold flavors of the Mediterranean using just a few humble ingredients.

At its core, dakos is a barley rusk, known as paximadi, topped with juicy grated or chopped tomatoes, creamy crumbles of feta or mizithra cheese, a drizzle of olive oil, and a sprinkling of dried oregano. The rusk softens slightly from the tomato juices and olive oil, but still holds its crunch, creating a beautiful contrast of textures in every bite.

What makes dakos so special is the purity of its ingredients. There’s no need for fancy sauces or complex techniques. The beauty lies in the quality: sun-ripened tomatoes, fragrant extra virgin olive oil, and authentic Greek cheese. With a few olives on the side and perhaps a few capers or fresh herbs like thyme or basil, dakos becomes the centerpiece of a light lunch, appetizer spread, or even a refreshing dinner on a hot summer evening.

It’s also a fantastic choice for those looking for healthy Mediterranean options. Dakos is vegetarian, high in fiber thanks to the barley rusk, and rich in healthy fats from the olive oil. It’s satisfying without being heavy and makes you feel like you’re eating right from a seaside taverna.

If you can’t find traditional Cretan rusks, you can substitute with whole grain bread that’s been lightly toasted or dried, but the real deal offers a satisfying crunch that’s hard to beat. Serve it with a glass of chilled white wine or ouzo for the ultimate Greek experience.

So if you’re craving something fresh, flavorful, and unbelievably easy, dakos is the answer. It’s proof that sometimes the simplest dishes leave the strongest impression.

Yummy! I added some extra spices I had and it was so good!!!!

  2. 3 stars
I’m not a fan of feta cheese… can I use cheddar instead?

  3. User avatar Mrs. Felecia Stehr says:

This is so simple but so tasty! I love the feta on top. Totally a hit at my dinner parties!

    1. User avatar kera.rosenbaum says:

I’ve never tried it with feta but it sounds good! I might give it a shot for my next BBQ.

  4. User avatar randolph.medhurst41 says:

Looks good but my feta was super dry and crumbly—couldn’t get that creamy layer. Next time I’ll buy better feta or let it sit a bit.

    1. User avatar basementDweller says:

      5 stars
Good call—feta can vary a ton. If it’s dry/crumbly, I usually use a slightly softer feta (or let it sit at room temp) so it gives that creamier texture over the tomatoes and oil.

  5. 5 stars
Tasted amazing, but my family didn’t like it… what do they know??

  6. 2 stars
I don’t know why people like this. Just bread with some tomatoes? Meh…

    1. User avatar cole.thompson says:

      4 stars
It’s a classic dish! The simplicity is what makes it great. It’s all about quality ingredients, not just the number of them. Give it another try! 😊

  7. User avatar Robin Andis Merryman says:

    5 stars
Delicious! Just like my grandma made it in Greece. Brings back so many memories!

  8. 4 stars
This tastes like a Greek salad that got dressed up. Feta everywhere. I used kalamata olives and it was perfect for a light lunch.

    1. 5 stars
Totally! Dakos is basically “Greek salad vibes” with the crunchy rusks—feta has to show up strong 😊 I’m glad Kalamata olives worked so well for you; they’re such a good fit.

Not gonna lie, I thought it would be bland, but the salt/pepper + capers combo saved it. Also oregano optional? Don’t skip it if you like herby vibes.

  10. 2 stars
Really? This looks kinda basic. I’ve tried this and it was just ok. Maybe add some garlic?

  11. User avatar thelma.collier80 says:

    2 stars
Meh, it’s just bread and tomatoes, right? I don’t get the hype.

  12. User avatar shenika.bogan11 says:

    5 stars
Tried this and it’s super fresh and bright. The feta really makes it—kinda like a Greek bruschetta without the fuss. I added capers and olives and it was perfect.

  13. User avatar franklyn.ondricka says:

I thought rusks were for animals. How can people eat them? 🤔

  14. User avatar grady.bechtelar43 says:

    3 stars
Tasted good, but I used canned tomatoes instead. Not the same 🙁

  15. 3 stars
Uhhh… is Cretan rusk the same as normal bread? I’m confused.

  16. User avatar Falmer Shaman says:

    3 stars
Way too much olive oil in my opinion. I poured a drizzle like the instructions said and still felt greasy. Flavor was good, just needed less oil.

  17. User avatar jamika.kutch7 says:

    2 stars
Meh… tasted kinda bland. I think it needs more spices? 🤷‍♂️

    1. 4 stars
I actually thought it was pretty good! Maybe try adding some chili flakes?

    2. User avatar dorethea.friesen37 says:

      2 stars
Nah, I disagree. Too many spices ruin the simplicity of the dish!

  18. 2 stars
I’m not a fan of feta, so I skipped it and it turned out bland. Maybe cheese is essential!

  19. 5 stars
YUM! Just made it and topped it with fresh herbs from my garden. So fresh!

  20. User avatar catina.wiegand1958 says:

    4 stars
I followed the recipe but forgot the capers. Still delicious though.

This is my go-to appetizer for parties! Everyone always asks for the recipe.

  24. User avatar angelina.kulas14 says:

I don’t really get why people rave about this dish. It’s just bread and tomatoes, right?

  25. User avatar lasandra.upton says:

    5 stars
This is so simple and delicious! Perfect for summer.

    1. 2 stars
But isn’t it just dry bread with some stuff on it? Don’t know if that’s worth it.

    2. User avatar malik.aufderhar24 says:

      5 stars
I love how easy this is! Perfect for summer picnics!

  26. User avatar loma.bauch says:

This is simple but not bland—olive oil + tomatoes + salty feta is a solid combo. I used extra oregano and it smelled amazing. Would definitely make again for guests.

  27. 5 stars
This is the best Dakos I’ve ever made! So fresh and flavorful.

  28. User avatar wellRespected says:

    5 stars

Amazing recipe! I added some grilled chicken on top, wow!

    1. User avatar Super Saiyan 2 Goku says:

Grilled chicken sounds like a fun twist! I’ll have to try that next time!

  30. User avatar harland.nitzsche60 says:

Super easy recipe! I didn’t have feta so used mozzarella, still turned out great. I love Cretan food!

  31. User avatar hedy.pouros97 says:

    3 stars
Yummy! But I think mine looked more like a mess than your pic. Taste was good tho!

  32. User avatar chantay.ondricka25 says:

    4 stars
Simple and honestly so satisfying. I used a bit more oregano than “optional” because… why not. Toastiness of the rusks holds up great.

  33. 3 stars
Too much olive oil for me. Next time, I might skip that step.

  34. User avatar oPandariaNo says:

    5 stars
Had it for the first time in Greece, tastes just like that! 🙂

  35. 4 stars
I’d never heard of Dakos before, but now I’m hooked! Such a fresh flavor.

  36. User avatar bernardo.mohr0 says:

It’s just bread and tomatoes. How is this a recipe? Where’s the meat??

    1. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

      4 stars
It’s actually a traditional Cretan dish! Sometimes less is more, you know? The flavors of the tomatoes and feta are delicious together.

    2. User avatar tim.tromp1965 says:

      2 stars
But like, bread and veggies? Where’s the meat? This is a snack, not a meal!🤷‍♂️

  37. User avatar jene.crona18 says:

    5 stars
    Delicious!

    1. User avatar cedrick.greenholt93 says:

      5 stars
Agreed—Dakos hits that salty, tangy vibe perfectly. I always add capers and a little extra oregano for sure.

    2. User avatar mohammad.bernier says:

      4 stars
Sounds good but I’m confused—aren’t the rusks supposed to be soaked a bit? Mine always stay too crunchy if I just drizzle oil 😅

  38. User avatar Leto Atreides says:

    2 stars
2/10 because I hate tomatoes. Just kidding… but seriously, it’s too wet for me. I think the feta should go first or maybe use less olive oil.

  39. User avatar mei.smitham2024 says:

    5 stars
Made this for my kids and they loved it! Even with all the greens!

    1. User avatar fletcher.collier22 says:

      4 stars
That’s awesome! Kids usually don’t like greens, but maybe you found the secret! What’s your trick?

  40. 4 stars
I added some garlic and it was awesome! Not sure it’s authentic tho.

  41. User avatar cedrick.schuster says:

    3 stars
I’m skeptical about the “serve immediately” part. Mine sat for like 10 minutes and the rusks got too soggy. Still tasty though—just not the same texture.

    1. User avatar ora.koch2025 says:

      5 stars
Totally get you—dakos is one of those things that really depends on timing. I try to build it right before eating too. If yours sat 10 minutes, yeah, the rusks are gonna go soft and soggy.

    2. 3 stars
Huh, mine usually sits longer and it’s fine 😅 maybe your tomatoes were extra juicy? Next time I’ll blot them or use less tomato. Serve immediately is kinda bossy, lol. Still delicious though!

  42. User avatar lennie.shields says:

    4 stars
I hate olives, so I left those out. Still tasted great!

  43. User avatar rickiestmorty says:

    3 stars
Confused about the rusks, are they just any kind of hard bread??

    1. 5 stars
Yes, they’re like hard bread! They’re really popular in Greece. You can find them in Mediterranean stores if you don’t have them. Just make sure they are the Cretan kind for the full flavor!

  44. User avatar xiao.windler says:

    4 stars
Simple and delicious! But my kids wouldn’t eat it. 😢

    1. User avatar divina.jast1975 says:

      4 stars
Maybe they just don’t like the texture? Kids can be picky. Have you tried different toppings?

  45. User avatar ezequiel.swaniawski says:

    4 stars
Quick and refreshing! Perfect for summer. I skipped the olives though. 🌞

    1. User avatar rosena.lind says:

      3 stars
Olives are the best part! How can you skip them? 😕

  46. 5 stars
Tried Dakos once in Crete and this recipe feels super close. The feta + tomato + olive oil combo is unbeatable. I added capers and it really woke everything up.

  47. 4 stars
I love dakos, but I added avocado instead of feta and it was still good! Highly recommend!

  48. User avatar alpha.hyatt78 says:

    5 stars
This is basically like Greek bruschetta’s cooler cousin. Quick, no-cook, and looks fancy for zero effort. My friends asked where I got it 😂

  49. 5 stars
So simple but hits every note—juicy tomatoes + salty feta + crunchy rusks. I added capers and it really made it pop. Would 100% make again.

    1. User avatar Nocturne says:

      5 stars
Totally agree—those textures are everything. I also do capers sometimes, and yeah it makes it pop. Next time I’m adding a pinch of oregano too.

    2. 3 stars
I tried it but my rusks got soggy 😩. Maybe I let them sit too long? Still tasted good with the feta though. Any tips for keeping them crunchy?

  50. User avatar shalanda.anderson32 says:

    5 stars
This is such a quick and tasty dish! Perfect for summer.

  51. User avatar miguel.koelpin43 says:

    2 stars
This called for a lotta olive oil! Made it kinda greasy…

    1. User avatar toshia.runte86 says:

      4 stars
Yeah, I noticed that too! Maybe less oil next time? Anyway, still a tasty dish!

  52. 5 stars
Wow. Easy! (also i spelled it wrong in my notes lol)

  53. 4 stars
Tried it without olives and it still tasted great! But so messy to eat! 😂

  54. 5 stars
Love this dish! Brings back memories of my trip to Greece. The feta is a must!

  55. User avatar tempie.mante says:

    3 stars
I didn’t understand the whole rusk thing. Can I just use bread? I guess it might work…

  56. User avatar michelle.oreilly says:

    5 stars
    Delicious!

    1. User avatar queenie.graham says:

      5 stars
Right?! Dakos is such a perfect little bite—crispy rusks, juicy tomatoes, and that salty feta combo is unbeatable. 😄

  57. User avatar beatriz.pollich72 says:

    2 stars
Too much olive oil for me. I’ll stick to the basics next time.

  58. User avatar rigoberto.weber11 says:

    3 stars
I followed it exactly, but my tomatoes were kinda watery so the rusks got soggy fast. If you use firm tomatoes (or drain them a bit) it’ll probably be better.

  59. User avatar walter.hamill37 says:

    5 stars
Gonna try this for a party! Looks easy and tasty.

    1. User avatar gaylord.zboncak63 says:

      5 stars
This is gonna be a hit at your party! So simple and always impresses! 😋

  60. User avatar dessie.mueller94 says:

    4 stars
I don’t like olives, can I just leave em out?

    1. User avatar scott.adams23 says:

      5 stars
Yeah, you can totally leave out the olives. It’s your dish! More feta is better anyway!

  61. 4 stars
Tried it with regular crackers once and honestly it wasn’t the same. The Cretan rusks matter. Next time I’ll grab the right ones and go heavier on the olive oil.

    1. User avatar rubye.blick says:

      5 stars
Oh totally agree—regular crackers go kinda flat and dry. The Cretan rusks soak up the olive oil the right way and keep that texture. Going heavier on the olive oil is exactly the move 👍

  62. User avatar jacki.corkery says:

    5 stars
This is a great snack! Super easy to make and tastes amazing.

    1. 3 stars
Looks easy but how do you know if the rusks are right?

    2. 5 stars
I tried it and loved it too! Definitely a keeper.

  63. User avatar gonzalo.corwin says:

    1 star
Too much hassle for me. Just raw veggies on bread is quicker. Not worth the time.

    1. User avatar Claudio Mosciski says:

      4 stars
I get that! Sometimes simple is best. But Dakos is all about those flavors, you might just like it if you try it! 🥗

  64. User avatar billy.pacocha2004 says:

    4 stars
I love dakos as a concept, but my rusks turned kind of soggy too fast. Maybe I should oil less or assemble right before eating. Still tasty though.

    1. User avatar Loonquawl says:

      5 stars
Totally—dakos is best when it’s assembled right before eating. I also do a lighter oil drizzle than I think I need, otherwise the rusks go mushy fast. Tasty win either way though!

    2. User avatar lavera.altenwerth says:

      4 stars
Maybe your tomatoes were too juicy or you cut them too wet. I wait like 5 minutes after slicing so they lose some liquid, then I build it. Also don’t drown the feta—too much oil and tomato together = soggy city 😅

  65. 1 star
This is too much olive oil for me, made it super soggy. Disappointed.

  66. User avatar davida.littel88 says:

    3 stars
Can we put other types of cheese? That might taste better. Idk. Just thinking!

  67. 2 stars
What even is a Cretan rusk? Can I use normal bread instead?

  68. User avatar jake.jacobi83 says:

    2 stars
Okay but where’s the exact amount of tomatoes/feta? I kinda guessed and it turned out salty. Next time I’ll measure or at least taste the feta first.

  69. 3 stars
Could I swap the Cretan rusks for regular crackers? I’m asking for science 😅. I know it won’t be the same but I’m curious if it still works.

  70. User avatar joi.wyman2002 says:

    3 stars
Hrmm… I used fresh basil instead of oregano. Still good I guess. Maybe not traditional? 🤷‍♂️
